10:15 - 11:00 Ethical Awareness and Equity: A 21st Century Approach to Assessment
Speaker: Dr Mary Richardson, Professor of Educational Assessment at UCL’s Faculty of Education and Society. When educational assessments, notably tests, are examined through a lens of equity, the focus often rests on technical aspects of design or awarding. However, what does it mean to think in ethical ways about assessment? Dr Richardson discusses the ethics she believes are integral to being assessment literate in the twenty-first century. There is no ‘solution’ to addressing ethical challenges in the industry, just as there is no way to identify all potential ethical scenarios. What matters, however, is a willingness to recognise what might compromise all the efforts put into developing highly reliable and valid tests through the ‘hidden curriculum’ that resides in education and society at large.
