Donggang pasqueflower attracts so many photogra-

phers.

This perennial Korean plant’s habitat is the limestone cliffs overlooking the Donggang River, Jeongseon-gun and Yeongwol-gun. Unlike other Korean pasqueflowers, the blooms look skyward without bowing their heads. It is the only endemic species in the world with the place name “Tongkang (Donggang)” inscribed in its scientific name (Pulsatilla tongkangensis Y.N. Lee et T.C. Lee).

While taking photos of the ecology up the Donggang River, Kim Jung-myung discovered this flower for the first time and Dr. Lee Young-No of Korea Plant Research Institute confirmed that this species is endemic only in the Donggang River region. Accordingly,

Donggang Pasqueflowers bloom in step with gyeongchip (meaning the end of hibernation) when bugs wake from their hibernation. This perennial plant, whose roots hold firmly onto the rocks of the limestone cliffs of the Donggang River, blossoms year after year.

The soft, fluffy droplets of dew glisten in the early morning sun and attract the attention of observers as resembling our inner will to pursue a better tomorrow.

The pink color tinged with blue-purple is joined by splashes of mauve red and white.

The flower’s stamen which spring from the same root but each with different colors, are like children who have different characteristics although born from the same body.

it was officially announced to academia with the location “Tongkang (Donggang)” attached to the species name. Since then, residents of Gulam-ri have established the “Donggang Pasqueflower Conservation Research Group” to preserve the Donggang pasqueflower. Jeongseon-gun designated it as the county flower that symbolizes the firm will of the people of Jeongseon and passion for the future.

At one time, the population of Donggang pasqueflower was reduced due to the indiscriminate harvesting by tourists, damage by photographers, and the huge typhoons Rusa and Maemi. However, Donggang pasqueflower conservation members and
