PREFACE

THIS PORTFOLIO CONSISTS OF MY ACADEMIC AND PERSONAL WORK THAT I HAVE DONE THROUGHOUT MY FIRST YEAR IN ARCHITECTURE. THE WORK CONSISTS OF MULTIDICIPLENARY ART AND DESIGN. THE PORTFOLIO IS ORGANIZED FROM MY WORK IN ARCHITECTURE SCHOOL TO PERSONAL ART AND DESIGN .

PREFACE ARCHITECTURE MIXED MEDIA DRAWING

THE KIT OF PARTS

STUDENTS WERE TASKED WITH CREATING A COMPOSITION BASED ON A KIT OF PARTS. THE KIT CONTAINED SEVERAL PLANES, LINES, CUBES, AND “L”S. WE WERE ALLOWED TO ADD MULTIPLE COMPONENTS. INITIALLY, I SKETCHED SOME IDEAS AND FINALIZED THE COMPOSITIONS IN AN ALALYSIS. WE CREATED STUDY MODELS THEN MOVED ON TO UPSCALED MODELS. TO CREATE A FINAL COMPOSITION, WE CHOSE A 1/2 SCALE AND FULL SCALE MODEL TO MERGE INTO A WALL SITE. I MERGED SOME ELEMENTS FROM EACH MODEL INTO THE WALL SITE TO VISUALLY CONNECT BOTH MODELS. THE FINAL PRODUCT WAS A COMPLETE COMPOSITION THAT SHOWED THE CONNECTION OF THE FULL SCALE AND HALDF SCALE MODELS.

A SOCIAL SPACE

THIS SPACE WAS CREATED FROM A COMPOSITION MADE FROM A KIT OF PARTS. USING THIS COMPOSITION, I CREATED A SOCIAL SPACE THAT HAD NO SPECIFIC PROGRAM. BY TAKING THE PREVIOUS COMPOSITION, I DIAGRAMED AND SHIFTED COMPONENTS TO SLOWLY CREATE A GENERIC SPACE. ELEMENTS OF THE COMPOSITION ARE REFLECTED THROUGHOUT THE SPACE IN THE FORM OF OPEN CUBES FOR PEOPLE TO SIT IN, LARGE “L” SHAPED ELEMENTS THAT BOUND SPACES AND PLANES THAT REPRESENT ROOFING OR EVEN REFLECTION PONDS. THE USE OF MATERIALS SUCH AS LAYERING PLASTIC BOARD GIVES A UNIQUE EXPERIENCE THROUGH LIGHT AND SHADOW.

SITE PLAN

COMPOSITIONS

USING A SELECTION OF QUILTS CREATED BY GEE’S BEND IN ALABAMA, STUDENTS WERE TASKED WITH CREATING A NEW COMPOSITION FROM THE QUILTS. BY CREATING CONSTRCTION LINES AT NOTICABLE ELEMENTS IN THE QUILTS, WE WERE ABLE TO EXTRACT UNIQUE IDEAS FROM THE QUILTS. THESE COMPOSITIONS LED TO TECTONIC ANS STEREOTOMIC MODEL EXPLORATIONS AND IN THE END WE MERGED ONE STEREOTOMIC MODEL AND ONE TECTONIC MODEL TO CREATE A HYBRID. I FOCUSED ON USING VOIDS TO SHOW A CONNECTION BETWEEN TWO COMPOSITIONS AND TO SHOW HEIRARCHY WITHIN SOME ELEMENTS OF THE MODEL.

SIMILAR TO A PRIEST, HINDUS HAVE A GURU. OUR GURU GUIDES US BY TEACHING US THE PHILOSIPHIES OF HINDUISM AND WORSHIP. WHEN I MET MY GURU AT A YOUNG AGE, I DREW A PICTURE OF HIS GURU. HE BLESSED ME BY GIVING ME HIS UTMOST SUPPORT IN MY ARTISTIC AND ARCHITECTURAL ENDEAVORS. THIS PICTURE CRAFTED WITH GRAPHITE AND WHITE PEN HIGHLIGHTS SHOWS MY LOVE AND APPRECIATION TO MY GURU.

ANATOMICAL STUDY

IN HIGHSCHOOL, STUDENTS IN THE HEALTHCARE PATHWAY WERE TASKED WITH CREATING AN ANATOMICAL STUDY. I DECIDED TO EXCERSIZE MY SKILLS AS AN ARTIST AND CREATE SEMI-REALSTIC DRAWINGS OF MUSCULAR SYSTEMS. THE GOAL WAS TO USE ONE PENCIL, BUT CONVEY A VARIETY OF DEPTH THROUGH SHADING. USED VARIOUS PRESSURE IN THE DRAWINGS TO REPRESENT SHADOWS AND REFLECTIONS.

SPONTANEOUS

THIS DRAWING WAS CREATED SPONTANEOUSLY WHEN HAD A DESIGNERS BLOCK. I BEGAN BY ACCIDENTALLY DRAWING A PERSON IN ORAGE INK. SWITCHED TO BLACK INK AND DREW BOXES THAT EVENTUALLY TURNED INTO A CIRTY SCAPE. DURING THE PROCESS, I ENCORPORATED LITTLE MOMENTS SUCH AS A FOOD TRUCK AND A JAZZ ARTIST PLAYING. REALIZING I HAVE TOO MUCH ROOM ON THE BOTTOM OF THE PAPER, I FLIPPED THE PAPER AND DREW THE OPPOSITE OF A CITYSCAPE: NATURE.

CHARCOAL EXPLORATIONS

DURING THE BEGINNING OF MY FIRST SEMESTER, STUDENTS WERE TASKED WITH PRACTICING DIFFERENT DRAWING TECHNIQUES. I WAS INTERESTED IN CHARCOAL, SO I BEGAN BY LEARNING TO BLEND CHARCOAL AND CREATE DIFFERENT VALUES. FOR A FINAL DRAWING, I BEGAN BY CREATING THUMBNAILS OF UNIQUE MOMENTS IN MY REFERENCE OBJECT. I CHOSE A BOTTLE OF COLOGNE. I LOVED HOW THE LIGHT SHINED THROUGH AND AROUNG THE OBJECT, SO THE GOAL WAS TO CAPTURE THAT THROUGH CHARCOAL. FINALLY SET UP A LIGHT AND MY BOTTLE OF COLOGNE AND CREATED A FINAL IMAGE OF THE BOTTLE.

OBSERVATIONAL SKETCH: SHLUMPED

UPON REACHING THE STUDIO EARLY MORNING, I SEE MY FRIEND JIMMY ASLEEP IN THE PRIVATE STUDY POD. HE CLAIMED THAT HE WOULD STAY UP THE ENTIRE NIGHT TO FINISH HIS WORK, BUT HE FAILED. I DECIDED TO DRAW THIS MOMENT WHILE HE WAS SLEEPING.

EXPERIENCE MAPPING

AFTER COMPLETING A MAPPING EXERCISE IN STUDIO I, I DECIDED TO DO ONE OF MY OWN. IN THIS PIECE, I WANTED TO MERGE MY BEST MOMENTS IN MY COLLEGE EXPERIENCE. I FOUND DIFFERENT COMPONENTS, SHAPES, OR SIMILAR ELEMENTS TO MERGE IN EACH IMAGE AND COMPOSED A LAYOUT FOR THEM. WOOD ELEMENTS CARRIED THROUGH EACH OTHER IN A SIMILAR PLANE, CONCRETE ELEMENTS FOLLOWED OTHER CONCRETE ELEMENTS, AND LEAVES MERGED INTO TREES. SHAPES FOLLOWED WITH THE SIZE OF OTHER SHAPES AND EVENTUALLY CONNECTED ALL OF THE IMAGES INTO ONE PERIOD OF TIME IN MY LIFE.
