EDITORS’ NOTE a taste of what you’ll find in this issue & more

ear Readers,

We all go on journeys, whether they be emotional (see page 38 for a piece on family road-trips,) historical (see page 40 to learn about the significance of the Stonewall riots,) or physical (check out Talent Board on page 42). In this issue we hope to take you on a journey through the creative minds of the students of Ramaz Upper School. As teenagers who live in New York City, we are inspired by the diverse and eccentric community that surrounds us. We have chosen to bring this influence to you through fashion photoshoots around the world depicting differences in Eastern and Western fashion (pg. 33), recipes (pg. 37), and a special Talent Board spread showcasing our travels around the world through photography and writing on our favorite locations (pg. 42).

our Summer Calendar (pg. 13). In preparation for your individual excursions this summer, we have included a Guide to Travel (page 17), which features a music playlist, on-the-go beauty products, and a book list to keep you busy throughout your travels.

Finally, be sure to check out the article on page 11 to learn about the Journey of Rise and how it all came to be. It has been an amazing three years creating and building this magazine and I’m so excited for it to be continued next year by Netanel Kamel ‘18. RNEY OF Following my freshman year at Ramaz, I was searching for a vehicle to unify the student body.

I wanted to encourage my peers to seek out unique and enriching opportunities that would allow them to fully explore New York City. At the same time, I recognized the immense talent of the students and hoped to harness it in a creative arts magazine overflowing with writing, art, and photography. I called my friend and classmate, Moselle Kleiner, and together we launched what is known today as RISE Magazine.

RISE developed through a frenzy of text messages, late-night phone calls, and creative meetings with Ms. Rabhan. Moselle and I collaborated in bursts of excitement through the Noir Nights issue released in 2015. Since then, I’ve been working alongside an equally fabulous board of editors to continue advancing the magazine with every new release.

The reader sees only a glossy end product, not the journey each issue takes through production. I can’t describe the number of technical difficulties, photo-shoot fails, or 4Am editing sessions that go into each one, but that’s ok.

I’ve learned that if you keep at something despite the drawbacks, you will be rewarded with a product to be proud of. Each issue comes with its own set of laughs, smiles, and joy brought from working passionately alongside friends.

RISE has allowed me to collaborate with students of every grade to produce a piece of original work that we could all be proud of.

I look back at the journey of RISE Magazine fondly with both a sense of nostalgia for all that has passed, and with a glint of excitement for all that is to come. The thing I feel most pleased with is the enthusiasm that the students have towards the magazine, hearing a buzz in the halls as people discuss photo-shoot opportunities or new gallery exhibits to review. After being at Ramaz for four years, if I could leave our readers with some advice it would be to explore until you find what makes you feel happiest and most fulfilled. Have the courage of your convictions to execute your goals; don’t let them remain mere ideas.

Grow through them and allow them to change you. Take advice from people; communicate with the adults around you to help solve problems.

Don’t let discouragement get the best of you. Always look for improvement. If you feel something is missing, create it. Take it easy and be happy.

Since it was conceived in 2014, the goal of RISE Magazine has been to inspire students at the Ramaz Upper School to support each other in a multitude of forms of self-expression and to “rise” to new creative heights. I look forward to the future of RISE to continue executing the mission and discovering new content. After acting as an exemplary producer for the past two years, Netanel Kamel will continue as Editor in Chief, with Noa Attias working with him as Associate Editor and Sarah Issever as the Creative Advisor. I can’t wait to see where these bright, talented, and creative individuals take RISE Magazine.

REVIEW “Book of Mormon” Broadway By: Maya Shalom ‘18

There is definitely a reason why “Book of Mormon: The Musical” is one of the hardest shows to obtain tickets for. The show, which premiered on Broadway in 2011, has become a world-renowned performance. Written by the same creators as the comedic, popular animated show “South Park,” with music by the composer of “Avenue Q,” this musical is full of language that would make a teacher want to wash the actors’ mouths out with soap, yet it manages to convey the feelings of today’s reality in a pure, uncorrupted manner.

The storyline follows two Mormon missionaries on their journey to Uganda to help to shed the light of the Book of Mormon on the Africans. When they arrive, the enthusiastic missionaries encounter locals who lack an interest in any religion that isn't going to help them solve

their problems of AIDs, famine, and the terror of the local warlord.

In a myriad of songs and expressive language, the two young men discover that they have their job cut out for them, yet they proceed and are eventually successful in convincing the Africans to believe in their own version of the Book of Mormon.

The hilarity of this show can barely be expressed in words. A combination of shocking costumes, bold musical numbers, and snippets of sarcastic humour had the audience gasping for breath in between bouts of laughter.

As I walked out of the theater, wiping away tears of laughter after the comical finale, I knew that the show was going at the top of my “must re-watch” list!

Rollerball Perfumes No specific products for this one. A good smell is surely subjective, but smelling good is certainly objective. If you’re moving fast or on the go, and perhaps forgot to shower the night before, you should probably invest in a small perfume. Just a suggestion.

This song about youthful indiscretion is number one for a reason. It is the beautiful contrast to the contradiction that often comes with young artists. Khalid sings devoid of judgment, and simply about the bliss of the journey of youth. “My youth is the foundation of me,” he says. And it is entirely true.

Covering Bon Iver’s “00000 Million”, Ella Vos provides a hip synth alternative to the song. The song is an ode to those who continue on paths that have hurt them in the past. Can one ever actually start to feel better if you know “it harmed me, it’ll harm me”? Or do we look the other way and still “let it in”?

Can’t Go Back, Rosi Golan

Cutler is the 20-year-old fresh face and voice for the music world. She released this clean track that blends a soft melody with touching vocals. It is about realizing what is in the past and moving forward.

Brooklyn-bred Rosi Golan wrote this emotional lyric with practically no auto tune or pro tools to touch the vocals.

It is about wishing to move forward on one’s life journey, even though the past can haunt you. It begs the question for all its listeners – should we try to go back to the things we let slip away? Or do we move on, and leave the past behind?

The Night We Met, Lord Huron Debuting in Netflix’s 13 Reasons Why, “The Night We Met” has now become a hit on Billboard’s rock charts. The indie rock group began the song with angelic vocals leading into sorrowful and painful lyrics jamming the musical knife into the hearts of its listeners. It’s perfect for those on a tender journey.

READING AT YOUR LEISURE by: Loren Elmann ‘19

1. THE BOOK THIEF by Markus Zusak: Confronted by World War II Germany, Liesel begins stealing books because she finds solace in them. Liesel begins to share the stolen books with her neighbors during bombing raids, as well as with the Jewish refugee being hidden in her basement. This book is absolutely incredible. It is powerfully thought provoking and one of the best books I have ever read. And the craziest part is that it’s written in the viewpoint of death.

2. WHAT WE SEE WHEN WE READ by Peter Mendelsund: A quick and unique read. Mendelsund discusses exactly how the words of literature we read evoke imagery. The thorough and beautiful illustrations work to highlight how the human mind relates to different words.

3. NIGHT by Elie Weisel: This book is a Holocaust memoir. It is gory, powerful, and emotionally evocative as it discusses the Holocaust rawly, in first person.

I highly recommend this book as well.

It’s very worth the read if you are someone who is curious to know the truth, regardless of how brutal it may be.

4. FRENCH RHAPSODY by Antoine Laurain: This book gets you thinking about the past and what could’ve or should’ve happened but didn’t. Alain Massoulier receives a letter from a record company who was interested in his band’s music but 33 years later.

He takes it upon himself to get caught up in his past and research each of his old band members to find out who they have become.

5. YOUNG TURK by Moris Farhi: This book tells 13 tales from the perspectives of Turkey’s culturally diverse youth from before, during, and after World War II. The stories depict journeys of self-discovery and the process of finding one’s place in their country. It is a mature read and deals with the sensual, complex, and sometimes brutal transition to adulthood.

The Relationship Between Eastern & Western Fashion

The word “fashion” immediately evokes imagery of New York, Paris, and Milan. However, such a narrow view of who and what influence the fashion industry is incorrect and provides a skewed perception of where the industry has been and where it is headed.

As it happens, up until the 1980’s mainstream, Western fashion was rather drab. Hues often ranged from black to blacker, and grey to white.

Meanwhile, on the opposite side of the world, Tokyo was striding towards today’s modern fashion. It was back in the ‘80s that Japanese styles truly infiltrated the fashion world. Suddenly, clothing was not only colorful, but design and structure-conscious as well.

Merging Western fashions with their own tastes, the Japanese created a new style uniquely comfortable, yet cutting-edge.

The interaction between Western fashions and Eastern influences continues.

Take Nike’s new ’Pro Hijab,’ which the company hopes will enable traditional Muslim women to pursue exercise. This innovative headgear is truly a marriage of modern practicality with traditional sensibility, and was justly applauded in the fashion world as a particularly creative achievement for diversity and inclusion.

FOOD PROCESSOR 1. Insert metal blade. Drop garlic through the feeding tube and process until chopped. Cut onion, tomatoes, and green pepper into quarters and cut cucumbers into 2-inch chunks; place in work bowl and pulse several times to chop.

2. Add about 1 cup tomato juice and the remaining ingredients and pulse until desired consistency is reached. Add the remaining tomato juice and refrigerate.

3. Serve in bowls, garnished with chopped 37 vegetables and croutons.

For as long as I can remember, my family has always driven long distances and taken road trips to our vacation spots, instead of traveling by plane. Our destinations have included Montreal, Illinois, Vermont, South Carolina, North Carolina, Maryland, and most recently, Florida.

LANDMARK The Stonewall Inn By: Rachel Russo ‘17

The theme of this issue “Journeys” has made me think about the journey of the LGBTQ Movement. One of the most important events that led to the gay liberation movement was the set of Stonewall riots in 1969. These riots occurred at the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in the Greenwich Village of Lower Manhattan. The riots were an act of violence by members of the gay community against a police raid at the Stonewall Inn in 1969.

The police were legally justified in raiding the club, since it was serving liquor without a license.

After the raid, the gay community was tired of the police department targeting gay clubs, which resulted in retaliation.

As you enter the bar, you’re greeted by the original sign that reads “THIS IS A RAIDED PREMISES.” An amazing aspect of the Stonewall Inn is that it is still an active bar. I remember my group being watched as we walked through the space.

Its name reminds me of soft clouds, soft ripples in the sea, and birds that dip their bellies above the Bosporus. There is no color more prominent than the azure along Istanbul’s outline. There is no place that is so beautifully wrapped in blue the way Istanbul is. And every time my eye catches this color, this place is all I can see. They say a smell can take you back to a time and place, but my memory has never ringed so far back from a color the way the color blue lets it. Days of summer past can touch my mind every day.

Located near the Sahara desert, Marrakesh is an extremely hot city, but has the unique geography of being near the Atlas Mountains as well, which are an optimal skiing destination. In addition, Marrakesh houses beautiful orange and olive groves, gardens,palaces,riads (mansions), and mosques.

A Moroccan tradition that is still put in practice is the pouring of mint tea at least three feet higher than the glass that the teapot is filling up! And the old Jewish quarter of Morocco is home to the Miara, the largest Jewish cemetery in Morocco, which was built around the sixteenth century.

Marrakesh is home to the biggest traditional souk (market) in Morocco. Local venders sell anything from slippers to oriental rugs and spices. Another site to see would be the Ben Youssef Madrasa-- a famous school that taught Islam and the Qu’ran. The school was constructed in 1565 and is known for its unique tiles and arches, a courtyard, and pool!

Mexico is a beautiful country filled with culture. Everywhere you go you can buy colorful artwork made by local artists, watch performers dance to vibrant music, or eat the delicious food that the country is so well known for. This year I traveled to Playa Del Carmen with my family, where we were able to relax and watch as the vendors walked up and down the beach by the bright blue water, selling different tchochkies. Additionally, Mexico has an amazing history, which you can still go see the remains of. After a three hour drive, my family and I arrived at Chichen Itza, which is in Yucatan. It is one of the sites with remains of Mayan temples that were built hundreds of years ago. We learned from our guide all about the ancient Mayan ways of life, and how it affects the country, even today. I couldn't help but notice the intricate designs of skulls, lions, and more, engraved into the ruins. It is hard to imagine how amazing it would look with the pop of color it once had. All in all, it is a beautiful place with so much to see and learn.
