Letter From Department Head

Intar in 2019-2020 was an academic year like no other. The academic year began like so many other years with our summer programs: The MAs were exploring adaptive reuse in Copenhagen while the MDes’ collaborated in a spectacular installation in Providence. As a department, we opened the fall semester together in CIT-103 with Convocation, where we welcomed 53 new students and celebrated the achievements of our alumni in the news, from ENE ‘19 Joyce Kutty’s Maharam Fellowship advocacy for domestic workers in Malaysia to the MA ‘17’s project in a full spread of the New York Times in July.

The Sophomore’s first project on aggregations transformed the 6th floor studio. Our Fall advanced studios took the department all over the Northeast with an exploration of “maximalism” in a South Boston site, a program of the arts in Cambridge, MA, a Cranston Armory studio mirroring Providence’s RFP for a reuse for this historic monument. Makey Makey sketch exhibits abounded in the studio and eventually culminated in projects for the U.S.S. Constitution Museum and the Children’s Museum in Providence while the Industrial Ghost studio traveled south to tackle the reuse of the last grain elevator in Philadelphia. Final reviews included museum curators as well as members of the City administration.

The Spring semester was full of exciting challenges too. The advanced studios took on contemporary issues from sea level rise (Adaptive Island Studio) to marijuana retail (Cannabis Studio) and trash (Shadow Archive Studio). The Exhibition studio participated in the Piscina Mirabilis competition while the Japan Studio worked with real time clients to rethink the use of the only concrete building in Inami, Japan. In collaboration with

the Providence Preservation Society, the MAs’ Saving Superman Studio looked at the reuse of the Industrial Trust Building in its nomination year as 1 of 11 most endangered buildings in the US. We were in the midst of these challenging investigations when the pandemic arrived in mid-March. While this situation scattered the department – students, faculty, staff - around the world and sent everyone to remote learning, Intar students persevered through this new mode of learning, producing innovative and exemplary work using new modes of technology.

This resilience is exemplified by the efforts of the Seniors, who, threatened with not having a Senior Show, created an installation through augmented reality and released a phone app on the day before graduation.

Intar is the name by which the students, faculty, staff and alumni of the Department of Interior Architecture refer to themselves as an entity on the RISD campus. It stands for many things. It refers to our department pedagogy in which we study design interventions through Adaptive Reuse and Exhibition & Narrative Environments; it is the name of our internationally distributed journal on adaptive reuse, Int|AR; it is the fond abbreviation of our department name, Interior Architecture. Herein, I am proud to present a picture of this family in academic year 2020.

Transition to Remote Learning Thursday March 12th, 2020 was a studio day in the Department of Interior Architecture. In Rhode Island, as elsewhere in the northeast that day, there were mounting cases of COVID-19, although not on RISD or Brown’s campuses. By mid-morning, it was clear that something unprecedented would take place with the announcement that RISD was closing its campus. The entire department met in CIT 103 to understand the impact of this announcement and to understand how to take leave of our studio and our colleagues. The international students rushed to find flights before international borders closed, even as we all met for a last time with our studio that afternoon. We practiced Zoom, not realizing that it would become the new normal of communications for some time to come. By March 17th, everyone had left and our studio in CIT has since been empty.

Fifty students left for their own countries, fifty remained in Providence.

Classes and studios were conducted synchronously on Zoom. Final reviews for advanced studios were presented in Zoom, together with 31 MDes Theses. The MA class presented in a final review and also created a website for a public presentation of Saving Superman. Departmental graduation took place on May 29th with a group Zoom gathering that included the presentation of the Senior Show app, Intar2020.

What is Interior Studies?

The BFA in Interior Studies program is an education in spatial design as it relates to the built environment.

In developing design strategies across a range of work, students learn how to investigate and make interior interventions in various forms, while recognizing the importance of social and environmental responsibility within the discipline. Graduates of the program earn a strong academic foundation that uniquely prepares them for graduate studies and professional design practice.

HUMAN FACTORS

This course explores issues of anthropometrics, ergonomics, and proxemics. During the semester the students will gather facts about the interaction of the environment and a user’s culture, gender, stage of life cycle, and physical characteristics.

These ideas are implemented in the design and construction of an object.

DIGITAL REPRESENTATION + VISUAL NARRATIVES

The course provides an introduction to the theory and practice of design and architectural representation. It focuses on digital representation as a generative instrument of formal, spatial, and tectonic discovery as well as a communicative tool of visualizing ideas. In exploring conventional and emerging representation techniques, the course integrates theoretical and technical studies under three primary topics: Lines and Thicknesses, Surfaces and Volumes, and Scales and Resolution. These investigations will give students an informed awareness of how various representations can productively fit within their design processes and be used as a platform to

experiment with new representations.

Through a series of workshops and progressive exercises, the course aims to develop strong representation techniques using two-dimensional and threedimensional software such as Rhino3D, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe InDesign.

FINAL STUDIO SEMINAR

Building on the final advanced studio in the undergraduate program, the seminar engages the graduating senior with research and design studies that expand the focus of the final studio. This will involve reading, group discussions, topical studies, concept development and the crafting of an artist’s statement - all in service of understanding the design intervention and its relationship to the context of its host structure. The course will culminate in a group project: the design and installation of the Senior Show as a demonstration of a design intervention within an existing structure.

Graduating at a time of unprecedented circumstances, the Interior Architecture Class of 2020 embraces a paradigm shift to the virtual dimension. Faced with the challenge of designing an exhibition without a space, the seniors adapt a virtual site for the Senior Show. The RISD Museum Grand Gallery, the place of European grand masters, is transformed into an exhibition of the Interior Architecture seniors. The seniors’ full-scale Human Factors artifacts occupy the central space of the museum’s iconic portrait gallery, and ten classical paintings host ten new adaptive reuse projects in augmented reality. “The New Normal” investigates the potential of spacemaking when movement is not possible, adapts and rethinks architectural language in altered design conditions. Importantly, it is an invitation to congregate in new ways, to celebrate the culmination of our time together as a class no matter where we are.

What is Adaptive Reuse?

As a post-professional program culminating in a student’s first academic degree in architecture, the 45-credit Master of Arts in Adaptive Reuse offers a specialist design education on the subject of adaptive reuse. It establishes a clear aesthetic, theoretical and technological framework for the study of adaptive reuse that properly equips graduating students to engage in architectural practice.

The curriculum supports students in developing strategies that account for the importance of social and environmental responsibility, while expanding upon the architect’s understanding of reuse as a product of both practice and theory.

ADAPTIVE REUSE DESIGN STUDIO

Saving Superman is an endeavor, both national and local, to preserve an extraordinary structure. In May 2019, the Industrial Trust Building, known in Providence as the Superman Building, was placed on the National Trust’s list of America’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places. Built in 1928, this Art Deco skyscraper was a symbol of Providence in its heyday. Its tenant, the Industrial Trust, with its magnificent banking hall, was a testament to the wealth amassed through decades of industrial production. With the crash of the stock market the following year, the Industrial Trust Building would be the last thing to be built in Providence for some years. Superman survived the crash but succumbed decades later when its last tenant, Bank of America, vacated the building in 2013.

In this year of its nomination to America’s Most Endangered Historic Places, Rachel Robinson, Director of Historic Preservation at the Providence Preservation Society says that Saving Superman is “an exercise to re-envision and revitalize Rhode Island’s most significant historic landmark through creative design endeavors that respect the building’s integrity while pushing the boundaries of innovation.” RISD’s Department of Interior Architecture, with its focus on adaptive reuse, joined forces with PPS to explore the reuse of the Superman Building in the final semester of the MA in Adaptive Reuse Program. A one-year post professional degree for architects, the program culminates in the Adaptive Reuse Studio that is both a design studio and a full-scale demonstration of adaptive reuse practice in a real-life context.

The studio’s objective is that of the Athens Charter of 1931 that recommends that ‘the occupation of buildings, which ensures the continuity of their life, should be maintained but that they should be used for a purpose which respects their historic or artistic character.’ With the assembly capacity of Yankee Stadium, and the volume of 28 Olympic sized swimming pools or 1200 hotel rooms, a re-purposed Superman will require the participation of different sectors, from preservation to real estate development, from government to the local community, and from banking to planning.

Super Normal Yiren Mao MA 2020 “Super Normal” celebrates city living in the post-pandemic city.

The historic building is divided into three towers that house various living spaces, offices and communal gathering places -from library and bar to mini-grocer and pet storecatering to a young workforce.

‘Neighborhoods’ are created every four floors through interconnected stairs in a vertical social distancing within this urban community. A builtin outdoor dog park allows for the companionship of animal friends in this new normal of living.

Second Act Ankit Mandawewala MA 2020 Providence proclaimed itself the ‘creative capital’ in 2009, invoking entrepreneurship and revitalization.

The Second Act re-imagines the revitalization of the Art Deco Industrial Trust Building as a vast entrepreneurial melting pot for performing artists.

Superman is envisioned as an incubator-style facility to foster collaboration and growth, both for the artist and the audience. It is a space to prepare, produce, and present work.

The bold yet respectful design reestablishes its connection with the city.

It becomes the new marquee to the building, creating the energy within, and projecting it for the city.

Vertical Thrills Hongjia Zhou MA 2020 Rhode Island is already rich with resources for tourists, and Superman: Vertical Thrills has great potential to become a singular attraction. The many historic structures, such as the world-renowned Newport Mansions, and the beautiful natural landscape and seashore, make the state a desirable tourist destination. The building is intended to function both as an experience park and also as a visitor center and connector for people coming to Rhode Island for tours, exhibitions, programs, and events.

Using the four corner towers for vertical activities, such as rock climbing and bungee jumping, the proposal revitalizes this significant historic landmark and brings new life and economic growth to Downtown Providence.

Beyond Years Rashmi Ravishankar MA 2020 The current pandemic has brought the world to a standstill, it has proven to be far more fatal for the elderly. Their community life has been crippled with fear. “Beyond Years” is a re-imagined space for the elderly. The design enhances their community life and uses green spaces as a therapeutic tool and to purify indoor air. Inspired by Jane Jacob, a well-known advocate for urban preservation who stated “New ideas must use old buildings”, this project brings about the revival of the Superman Building and the community life of the elderly.

DIGITAL FABRIC ATION

Computational design has opened new avenues for creativity that on one hand can respond more fully to a set of a project’s given constraints, and secondly transcend traditional drawing techniques by allowing designers to model highly complex structures – much like organic evolution principles, parametric design follows how Nature adapts to its environment. Thinking parametrically however is a different creative process than the traditional one by its inversion of the creative process which uses performance outputs as inputs for generation of shape and form.

commonly used in parametric design to build a lexicon of architectonic and design approaches for students to use in their future design work. The course is mostly centered around the use of Rhino, Grasshopper, Kangaroo and other plug-ins created by a broad community of thinkers and designers.

Design methods will include form-finding, tessellation, tiling, paneling, physics modeling and optimization to train students to think from the treatment of objects’ edges, faces, surfaces, and volumes to the definition of performative structures. Lessons are accompanied throughout the classes by modeling and fabrication exercises.

WHAT IS ADAPTIVE REUSE? The Master of Design (MDes) in Interior Studies: Adaptive Reuse program offers students a unique design education in the alteration of existing structures through interior interventions and the practice of adaptive reuse.

This course of study focuses specifically on designing interventions for existing structures at many scales — from single rooms to entire buildings as well as the larger urban fabric. While operating outside the confines of professional architectural licensure, graduates of the program qualify to sit for the National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) exam.

What is Exhibition and Narrative Environments?

In providing a clear aesthetic, theoretical and technological framework for the study of exhibition design, the program properly equips graduating students to create narrative experiences within museum settings. Topics in Exhibition and Narrative Environments I is the first part in a yearlong exploration of a fluid field in which exhibition occurs in museums as well as other environments. This seminar offers various approaches for that exploration and will provide the student insight into different aspects of exhibition: curatorial matters, experience design, narrative creation, graphic design, new media, user participation, installation, site specificity, production, etc.

If archives are valued assemblages of materials and rituals that remember something or someone — what do they leave out of collective memory? State sanctioned, institutional or personal; archives will always run the risk of choreography, subjectivity and erasures.

As indispensable and invaluable archives are to any kind of research, interrogating their construction makes us cognizant about the limitations of knowledge, about the subjective biases archives employ, about what is chosen to be visible while other narratives remain silent about the politics

THE ADAPTIVE ISL AND

This studio investigates the impacts of climate change and sea level rise on historic buildings and the complex environment surrounding them. Focusing on Peddocks Island and the structures of Fort Andrews, this adaptive reuse studio inquires how time affects architecture, and how nature can interface buildings. It explores how to combine recreational and educational programs with architecture as a research instrument, tool for surveying, and observatory for the dynamics of landscapes.

Peddocks Island is the second largest of the Boston Harbor Islands National and State Park. The island is 184 acres in high tide and 288 acres at low tide. Students address adaptation in architecture as a resiliency measure and a creative opportunity to innovate on material tectonics, sustainability, flexible uses, and engage with the unique constraints of designing on an island.

Life on the East Head of Peddocks Island is revived in terms of active incorporation of the public and taking efforts to slow down sea level rise effects.

As the North Drumlin edge is lost to soil erosion, the island starts losing area, especially connectivity to the rest of the island to sea level rise.

East Head now functions as an island in itself due to losing of tombolo to sea level rise. The main intervention at this stage is to restore the lost access through the whole Peddock Island.

RE-IMAGINGING THE OLD HOKURIKU BANK BUILDING

Implanted into the historic urban fabric of Inami, a district of Nanto City in Japan, Hokuriku Bank, a neo-classical building erected in 1924, stands out against the vernacular, low-rise, dark wooden linear structures lining Yokamachi Street at the foothill of the Buddhist Temple Zuisenji dating back to 1390. The repeated destruction of the temple over the course of history, followed by reconstruction, necessitated the settlement of craftsmen on Yokamachi Street. To this day, the traditional, two-story buildings adjacent to the neo-classical structure serve as homes and workspaces for artisans continuing Inami’s legendary art of woodcarving, an art and craft declared a Japanese Heritage

in 2018. Further, preservationists initiated the listing of Yokamachi Street as a historic ensemble landmark.

In 1987, after Hokuriku Bank closed the branch on Yokamachi Street, the interior of the structure, transformed into the Inami Art Museum, managed by the Inami Art Association. In 2004, the Nanto City Government obtained ownership of the building, while maintaining the function of the structure as a free of charge venue for art exhibitions by local artists and many cultural events.

The substantial costs associated with the preservation of the historic Hokuriku Bank

building, coupled with scarce financial resources, will force the City of Nanto to forego ownership by 2020, risking the potential demolition of the historic structure.

In partnership with the City Government of Nanto, it is the objective of this advanced studio to conceive of a sustainable reuse model for the former Hokuriku Bank culturally, economically, and urbanistically.

The cannabis industry is a global market, challenging assumptions and shifting culture as it expands. It is expected that up to 80 countries will legalize medical and recreational cannabis by 2022. This presents an opportunity to sculpt and drive a fledgling market with a meteoric rise, a rare moment in history. No other moment has provided the blank slate to manifest the future of such a formerly divisive and clandestine product and how it performs in our everyday lives.

Currently, the United States cannabis industry functions differently in each state.

There are Recreational and Medical models,

while the gold-standard and seemingly impossible hybrid of both Medical and Recreational is the talk of a fractured and complex ecosystem.

Architecture is dynamic: it sets tone, creates community, and infuses culture over time.

Interior Architecture can actively participate in the performance and construct the stage of both the everyday rituals and the unique aspects + events of a community. In this role, design can re-define and physically articulate an evolving collective identity.

Interior Architecture has the power to provide access, be inclusive and celebrate the unique aspects, talents and attributes of a PLACE –not just the building, but its context and its community too.

This design studio explores how the interior architecture of two mid-century buildings in the City of Cambridge, MA can be re-

imagined to celebrate the Arts both the visual, and the performing arts in the city. Special attention will be given to spatial transitions how we enter a space/ building, and how we traverse through a series of spaces. As such, we will explore relationships of adjacent spaces, structure, and overall sequence to further develop your investigations of interior architecture.

Yona Yinan Yang BFA 2020 This adaptive re-use studio explores obsolete spaces left behind in the wake of deindustrialization and accelerated urbanism. Philadelphia had been the center of the nation’s industrial production, from roughly 1880 through the 1920s, until its transition to a service economy. How can a disused industrial space be reclaimed for contemporary demands while informing its past? What are the possible futures for new post-industrialism? The studio addresses these social and spatial challenges through envisioning new models for collaborative

working and living space that engage the sharing economy. The work will seek to combine architecture, infrastructure and landscape strategies with processes of spatial addition/subtraction, structural adaptation and material tectonics.

Realistic Utopia Xiao Fang MDes ENE, 2020 Many people believe that only when a design is built can it be called architecture.

Architecture, however, was never solely about built form. Architecture depends on imagination and visualization: only the architect knows how the space works before it has actually been built. Architects also design spaces knowing they will never be built, to exercise ideas or push toward new realities. From ancient times to the present, there have always been architects who incorporate their social, political, and philosophical ideals through media other than construction. Even though these utopians never had the chance to realize their works, their experimental, inspiring ideas have left us precious treasure.

Why did architects design these utopias?

How have their designs and ideas influenced architecture, urban development, and society as a whole? Through designing and creating an exhibition on utopian architecture at Arcosanti, an experimental utopian town in Arizona, this thesis will bring unfulfilled dreams to life. The proposed exhibition will combine reconstruction of featured utopian architecture as scale model pavilions scattered in the landscape surrounding Arcosanti, and a new pavilion to represent contemporary notions of utopia.

Each pavilion will not only be a model representation of the utopian design ideals of its designer, but also hold exhibitions of other similar utopian proposals.The reconstruction of historical utopias within a living utopian community will communicate different possibilities for architecture, and suggest a yet more ambitious utopian future.

GETTING CLOSER: Exploring Re-Contextualization in Exhibition Yiran Mu MDes ENE, 2020 Due to the rise of globalization, the circulation of exhibits born in different cultural backgrounds to alien places all over the world has dramatically increased.

Cultural contents are re-contextualized and adapt to new environments where they lose their essence of place and risk stereotypes of distant cultures. The process of curating and displaying culture cannot be disconnected from its site of creation, especially if the object of display is Architecture which by definition embodies the site.

The Baiwanzhuang, a 1950s historical housing community in Beijing, which remains within its own context and spatial environment, will be a case study for dealing with the issue of decontextualization of culture in architectural terms. The goal is to design a “diffuse museum” in situ to exhibit the urban fabric, the historical architecture, the social framework over time, the contemporary cultural environment, the genius loci of place.

In this thesis, the audience is not only given certain guidance in the process of visiting, but also has the freedom to move through the complex at will. In the process of exploring the site, the audience will slowly encounter this fragmented exhibition.

Utilizing the residential area as an urban scale “exhibit,” this creates a situation where all visitors, residents and stories that happen here become part of one context.

Dialogue Across Time: Atlanta, 1996 and 2020 Qianyu Liu MDes AR, 2020 In the opening ceremony of the Atlanta Centennial Olympic Games of 1996, millions of people watched as cultural icon Muhammad Ali carried the Olympic e flame torch to gelight the cauldron. Hetagwas S Sta shaking from his Parkinson’s, and it was an emotional moment for many people. The games in Atlanta represented a great step forward of the Civil Rights Movement for the most progressive city in the American South.

The Cauldron Tower for this big event was designed by a pioneer contemporary artist, Siah Armajani, who produced a monolithic uninhabited sculpture you cannot climb. The tower of 106ft is still prominent when we look back to the historic photographs today.

However, the tower lost the context it relied upon along with the partial demolition of Centennial Stadium after the 1996 Olympic Games, when it was moved to the current isolated location on Hank Aaron Drive, on the edge of a bleak parking lot. As a valued artifact of historic heritage, does the collapse of the context declares the death of the iconic architecture? This architecture is not permanently lost, but it is already dead from social significance. By proposing the second move to the Centennial Olympic Park in downtown Atlanta, this thesis will explore a way to rehost an architecture object that has lost context, while reactivating the city’s memory in the process.

CIUDAD INFORMAL: A New Model for Urban Living Rebeca Peña MDes AR, 2020 Why should the poor be forced to live in slums on the periphery of the city when there are empty high-rises in the center? Housing scarcity and densification are increasing challenges in cities as a consequence of urbanization and displacement of communities. By performing a study on informal settlements in the city of Caracas, this thesis explores vertical communities and the potential to convert unused high-rise buildings into accessible housing solutions.

The Tower of David is both a precedent and the host structure for this thesis, which aims to analyze how collective effort and lack of essential needs were harnessed to transform this unplanned site into a new model of urban living that can be viewed as a prototype to be repeated throughout the world.

Central to this thesis is the empowerment of residents, providing them with the tools to become their own developers and designers.

In order to build a strong community, the intervention will encourage the involvement of middle-income families and lower income residents. The focus will be on the community as a collective and the users as individuals, with the main goal to ultimately produce solutions that are sustainable, flexible and adaptable. The three design strategies included are: the creation of hydroponic farms, a new residential living model developed by and for residents, and a vertical circulation system incorporating public spaces to connect the residents with the community at large. The street is reimagined as a central ramp and staircase system which public actiivies take place.

Reactivating Street Life: Fostering More Communal Interation in Longtang Ziyang Qiu MDes AR, 2020 The public life that develops between buildings in neighborhoods is undergoing a significant change during the process of growth and modernization; reflecting shifts in social behaviors and community structure. Traditionally, the presence of people and events defined the life of neighborhoods. This constitutes an essential quality of public space: the mix of outdoor activities influenced by various conditions including architectural framework. When those activities are missing, is it a result of the reliance on electronic products for entertainment, or unreasonable urban planning under insufficient public policy?

The Longtang, a unique community in Shanghai, was once inseparable from thousands of residents’ lives and encouraged a relationship to the public street. However, the original Longtang life is currently missing due to industrialization and reliance on technology. The Longtang streets are now occupied by private cars and bikes, and residents are immersed in the world of television and film. As a result, social activities are missing from the streetscape.

This thesis reactivates the Longtang and improves quality of life by providing various programs and an enticing environment.

The design generates an environment to attract people to stay outside, dramatically increasing the probability of contact. A system includes old and new activities covering the street and rearranges the position of programs to establish contact between people that engages sound, smell and sight.

Re-Connect Xin Ren MDes AR, 2020 We live in an era of contradiction: the order of the external world always stands in an ambiguous relationship to individual autonomy. The development of technology has not only greatly reduced the distance between space and time, but also causes the over-coupling effect in social division: institutions formed with a dangerously strong and stable dependence on each other. In this hyper-connected society, access to instant satisfaction through consumption and fragmented entertainment is the norm. Similar to the second law of thermodynamics, entropy increases and only increases: In an age of addiction to instant satisfaction, people’s lives suspend through this dynamic and constantly accelerating world.

With a clear-headed view on human life’s limitation and purposelessness, while most designs aim against isolation and create shared space, this thesis seeks to have a conversation about how best to solve people’s loneliness. By adapting and reusing the abandoned Brooklyn Bridge’s Anchorage, this intervention will offer different degrees and qualities of solitude while making peace with one’s own psyche.

The footings of the bridge stand as a tool for both reconnecting and improving the resilience of the built environment, and supporting autonomy in public urban life.

Creating a Safe Haven Maria Carla Victoria M. Sebastian MDes AR, 2020

As a result of climate change, vulnerable coastal communities are situated at the forefront of intensifying typhoons and sealevel rise. Though there may be evacuation centers, these are usually inaccessible or un-equipped for proper deployment. The majority of these make-shift evacuation centers are in churches, schools, gymnasiums, and other community centers.

If we continue at today’s rate of carbon emission, population density, and global warming, thirty years from now, we will likely have fewer islands in the Philippines, and about three times more typhoons. It is urgent to shift the existing paradigm in urban design and architecture towards coastal resiliency and environmental awareness, LAS- particularly when it comes to evacuation planning and mitigation.

Much of the country’s cultural heritage lies in these coastal towns, as they bear deep roots to many Filipino communities. This thesis challenges the existing paradigm of coastal provincial architecture in the Philippines by proposing a more integrated evacuation center that adapts to sea level rise and climate calamities. The focus is a church in a small coastal town, St. John the Baptist Church, San Juan, La Union, as churches HIYA’ WEAVE have historically provided physical sanctuary CY SCREEN alongside salvation to Filipinos. An NS independent roof structure provides a human scale space for short-term vertical evacuation facilities. The intervention demonstrates how a social and cultural landmark can cofunction as a resilient evacuation area across the coastlines of the Philippines.

The Indo Arabian Nights Hanisha Thirth Benna Bhaktula MDes AR, 2020 How do you reimagine yesterday’s symbol of war to tomorrow’s symbol of peace?

By transforming an ethos of violence and a nation of neutrality to a philosophy of peace. Tracing a new life within the Aguada Fort Prison, which has a heritage entangled in complexities of colonization, religious intolerance, and genocide, frames the objective of the thesis. The Fort and its prison are strategically built on the south western coast of India-Goa, by the Portuguese in the seventeenth century to protect an empire that was built on bigotries. This thesis, lndoArabian Nights, ties narratives into a tale of resilience in which Goan and global communities not only withstand disaster, hatred, intolerance but re-emerge better and stronger than ever.

The design begins by addressing the first places of contact, the edges. The cutting, moving, and pushing of the existing edges generates softer thresholds that are more resilient and have the capacity to adapt with time. Interposition and inversion of the prison’s inherent character will contribute to change in the edge condition itself; further transforming what the fort represents.

Spaces within the walls represent universal equal conditions, beyond gender, caste and religion, that enrich existences of human life. The built form will start to dissolve the belief of hierarchical differences. It is a dialogue amidst the narratives of the past that celebrates all faiths and inspires empathy at a critical time for the world.

The lndo-Arabian Nights embraces the concept of the world we want to live in: a world of tolerance, openness, and constant advancement.

Reoccupation: Buildings, Ideology and Decolonization in Northern China Dylan Ziyu Wei MDes AR, 2020 Buildings often survive longer than a single human generation, and many witness significant transitions from generation to generation. When we approach varied eras that have washed over an unchangeable building like tides eroding a bank repeatedly, how can we distinguish the building’s primary identity and judge it’s fate?

In Northeastern China, a Japanese dormitory survives as a witness of Manchurian colonization, early socialism and the economic recession that caused its abandonment until today. The city also suffers a swiftly aging population and brain drain as the brightest of the youth move away. This thesis proposes to change the situation and revitalize the local society through rebuilding historical connections and reshaping cultural cognition.

Urban Memory Jin Yuan MDes ENE, 2020 The question of how to renovate the Beijing City Wall Ruins Park raises issues that engage exhibition, architectural, landscape, and urban design, and cultural relics protection. It demands that we consider our attitude towards history. The walls and towers that used to surround the city have disappeared over years of changes and demolition. Except for the Zhengyangmen Tower and Deshengmen Tower, only a fragment exists: a section of Ming Dynasty wall in the southeast corner of the inner city.

By using the tools of exhibition design, I reactivate the old city wall and the spirit of the place. The area surrounding the wall is the threshold for the transformation of Beijing’s old city and the outside world.

From a historical perspective, it is the key area that can reflect the past development of Beijing city, as well as the development at present and in the future.

The renovation of the Ming City Wall ruins transforms the original exhibition facilities to allow better understanding of this historical monument and have it be integrated into the lives of the contemporary people. The interpretation of place through events, materials, people’s lives and possibilities, will make the site a place of memory again. It records rich historical aspects through these tangible and intangible elements. However, these elements are gradually disappearing in corners all over the city that are under the jurisdiction of different administrative regions and national departments.
