CAMPAIGNS 2010-11 was a challenging year for the Students’ Union, with the removal of the cap on tuition fees and changes to higher education funding. In November 2010, Lincoln said NO to education cuts when we took over 300 students to march on the streets of London to participate in the national demo. We also supported local demonstrations in Lincoln and Nottingham. We ran a number of other successful campaigns through the year, including Don’t Forget Your Wingman, Healthy Campus Week and the introduction of Court Reps to better represent the views of students in university provided accommodation.

FRESHERS’ FAYRE Over 10,000 students visited the Freshers’ Fayres during Freshers’ Week in 2010. In January 2011, we introduced Re-Freshers’ Fayre which proved to be hugely popular, and has formed part of our regular annual events for 2011-12 and beyond.

STUDENT REPS We are committed to enhancing the student experience, by creating opportunities for students to express and represent their views. In 201011 we supported nearly five hundred Reps, and provided the necessary training and information they needed to do their role. We also held the first annual Reps Conference “The Big Conversation.

SPORTS AND SOCIETIES It was a great year for Sports and Societies, with nearly 3000 memberships across 39 clubs and 43 societies. The season kicked off with the Pep Rally Sports Day in October, and we finished 65th place in BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sport). Plus another Varsity win for Lincoln against Derby SU for the fifth year running.

STUDENT AWARDS In September we launched The Lincoln Award, an achievement award designed to improve the employability of graduating students. 70 students took part in the pilot, and is being rolled out more widely in 2011-12. In April we held the annual Sports and Societies Awards Dinner, followed by the Students’ Union Awards in May, giving special recognition to those students and university staff who had gone the extra mile.

ANNUAL REPORT 2011

VOLUNTEERING Our volunteering department continues to grow each year, with over 260 student placed in 201011. In November students took part in Make A Difference Day, and in February students actively get involved with National Volunteer Week. During the summer months, a small group of students travelled to India to help build a school....... We also made significant improvements to our website, enabling students to view and sign up for volunteer opportunities online.

STUDENT HOUSING In January we held the Housing Fayre and introduced the SU Accommodation Provider Star Scheme, following student feedback from our accommodation survey. The scheme is designed to rate a number of key services offered by accommodation providers and student opinions of them. It allows an opportunity for accommodation providers to make improvements and ultimately make things better for students.

BULLET MEDIA In September 2010 Bullet Magazine celebrated its 10th anniversary, and in November celebrated its 50th print edition. It remains Lincoln’s longest running student publication, make by students for students. Last year we revamped the Bullet website, and launched Bullet TV, delievering regular news and videos online, complimenting the output of the magazine.

BUDGETS **NEEDS UPDATING**The Students’ Union’s overall financial picture remains healthy thanks to continued support from the University and increases in income generated from activities and sponsorship. With clear cut backs and reductions across the University, restrictions have been clear within the Union’s block grant, however this hasn’t affected the services or overall performance of the Union. The performance of the Union has been broadly in line with budgets, and produced a surplus of around £20,000 which will help support the Union and its activities in a less certain funding environment. The majority of funds were used to directly support Union activities, from Job Shop, to Volunteering, through to Sports and Societies.

Expenditure on student activities **NEEDS UPDATING** The graph (right) represents all costs, direct and indirect, including allocations for insurance, central management and admin etc. Sports and Societies expenditure includes all the funding for individual Sports Teams and Societies activities, space and facilities use. The majority of this expenditure is allocated by Sports and Societies Councils, including individual budget allocations for Sports and Societies and the allocation of development funds which was new for 2009-10. Communication includes all the Unions communications, including Bullet Magazine, publicity, online media and web costs, space rentals, posters, celebration events, training and support. Education covers areas of representation, development and educational campaigning. Welfare includes welfare activity and campaigning. Election costs reflects the costs for the election process. National Representation relates to costs related to NUS activity NUS Conference shows cost related to sending student delegates to NUS conferences in the year. Community Volunteers highlights costs involved in the administration and development of the SU’s volunteering activities.
