Director’s Welcome

Zing is home to great free activities and performances throughout the year. See our website for up-to-date listings.

Hello There! Welcome to our Spring/Summer 2014 season, packed full of great theatre and arts events this New Year. I always look forward to the first half of the year, as it is chock full of festivals offering something for everyone. We start with newvolutions in January – a micro-festival of innovative performance for the curious and then move straight on to re:generation in Feb/March – our festival of work by and for young people, which this year features Ghost Town by award-winning Pilot Theatre, commissioned by LOV, made right here in Lincolnshire and featuring a curtain-raiser by local school pupils. We then have the week-long David Greig Festival at the end of March, celebrating one of the UK’s most prominent playwrights, which includes Actors Touring Company’s moving and powerful production of The Events, featuring two local community choirs.

2

Over Easter we’re teaming up with Lincoln Drill Hall and The Collection to present EASTIVAL – a children’s festival for the city of Lincoln, offering artistic treats, such as a new version of Pinocchio written by Michael Rosen and Meeting Mr Boom a dance show for children that takes place on an inflatable set! Then in May we’ll be presenting the Final Degree Shows of the University of Lincoln’s Dance and Drama students, whilst taking part in Lincoln Inspired and playing host to the Big Chris Barber Band as part of Lincoln Jazz Week – and there’s much more besides!

Lincolnshire One Venues Lincolnshire has a really creative community and we’re making sure 12 to 25 year olds feel part of it. As part of Lincolnshire One Venues (LOV), a network of ten arts venues, we are working with young people to create a range of exciting activities and events for and by young people across the county. If you’re aged between 12 and 25 visit www.facebook.com/ LovProjectTeam for the latest opportunities and to have your say.

Ours Was The Fen Country

Award-winning writer and theatre maker Michael Pinchbeck has created three devised performances inspired by the work of William Shakespeare. The Beginning, an interpretation of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Middle, a deconstruction of Hamlet, and The End triggered by a stage direction from The Winter’s Tale, are to be shown together for the first time as The Trilogy. Fusing an experimental approach to Shakespeare’s text with the company’s personal stories about their first or last times onstage The Trilogy asks the audience to enter a world where a performance can be a rehearsal, text can be both script and set and they are always aware of where the fire exits are.

Created by Dan Canham and company Produced by MAYK

5 INSIGHT Post Show Discussion

Thursday 6 February 7.30pm Tickets: £12 Full // £10 Concessions // £5 Students & Under 26s Running Time: 1 hour (no interval) For the past two years Dan Canham has been capturing conversations with people of the fens in East Anglia. Eel-catchers, horse breeders and young farmers have all been interviewed. In this ethereal piece of dance-theatre Dan and his team fuse movement and sound with the words and memories of their native collaborators to get to the heart of the Fens – a beautiful, bleak and mysterious expanse of flat land. In a place where the soil is shrinking by the height of a person in the lifetime of a person, this is an exhilarating, poetic look at a disappearing community and the inevitability of change.

“Michael Pinchbeck is a terrific theatre maker” The Guardian

It’s apocalypse now as the three cultural guerrillas of The Reduced Shakespeare Company set their reductive sights on the good book. Yes, it’s an affectionate, irreverent roller coaster ride from fig leaves to final judgment as the bad boys of abridgement tackle the great theological questions: Did Adam and Eve have navels? Did Moses really look like Charlton Heston? And why isn’t the word “phonetic” spelt the way it sounds? Whether you are Catholic or Protestant, Muslim or Jew, Atheist or Jedi, you will be tickled by the RSC’s romp through old time religion.

“This is a slick, fast, very funny show… skilled performers with immaculate, sassy American timing.” The Times

“The RSC put the “fun” back in fundamentalism.”Baltimore Sun

Site Specific 28

This series of works by second year students offers a diverse mix of performance taking place in and responding to sites across Lincoln. Utilising text, movement, narrative and pervasive media to tell the stories of places that we know, think we know or have never noticed before.

Spring Dance Concerts Join us for our programme of dance, created and performed by the dance students at University of Lincoln. These works include new choreography by international artists and contemporary repertory performed by Lincoln School of Performing Arts undergraduates. We’ll also be presenting student created work, ranging from studio showings of scores, to concert dance, to third year final performance work, as well as performances by the MA Choreography students.

Multimedia A programme of crossdisciplinary, multi-media performances that embraces the potential of technologies new and old across all art forms. These works effortlessly ignore disciplinary boundaries and labels to present a truly experimental and investigatory approach.

SOLO PERFORMANCE A mini-festival of solo theatre. From comedy and monologue to lecture demonstration and one-on-one performance, these final degree shows offer you the chance to indulge in an eclectic, mix-and-match programme over a jam packed week of glorious, decadent, unforgettable performance.

Theatre Company Join us as our graduating companies take complete control of the venue to produce a series of full-length performances. With a diverse mix of theatre and performance on offer, this degree- showcase promises to produce some unforgettable moments conceived and created by the next generation of theatre makers.

Mike Leigh’s play became an instant classic when it first appeared in 1977 with its darkly comic setting of Essex nouveau-riche couples meeting up for a polite soirée while teenage punk Abigail gets her own party started a few doors down the road. While husband Laurence struggles to deal with his ever-demanding clients, his monstrous wife Beverly holds court in a sardonic and seductive tale of bitterness and savage recriminations set to the sound of Demis Roussos.
