EDITORIAL BOARD A message from LoveYourself’s Executive Director, Dr. Ronivin Pagtakhan

October has a special place in my heart because it's my birth month, and many remarkable personal milestones happened around this time. I'd like to highlight that taking time for yourself actually should be year-round. That's why, on this issue, we give emphasis to one of our core values–self-care.

It's timely because October is also Philippine Mental Health Awareness Month. Despite the noise around us, we always have to remind ourselves to take a pause. Then, listen to what's within and what's essential for ourselves to learn and grow.

Simply, self-care sustains our whole being. It is in this perspective that our CHAMPION Community Centers take a stand on valuing oneself. Our network has continuously delivering sexual health services amidst the challenges we face. As our prime advocacy, we took advantage of highlighting the story of SelfCare, the first-ever unassisted HIV self-testing in the country. SelfCare is, fortunately, being promoted by Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray, alongside our community volunteers with a message of us controlling HIV rather than the other way around.

We are also gradually venturing into the realm of mental wellness. Last October 25, we held the first-ever online concert of the community through the Flourish Circle program for raising mental health called #TuloyPH: A Community in Symphony, which is also co-hosted by Macoy Dubs, who is one of our volunteers. We also featured the Spaces.MNL's Fact U online show tackling suicide in the LGBTQIA+ community.

That's why it's also imperative to discuss in this issue the struggles of key populations such as coming out, discrimination and legal discourses, platforms for awareness like K-PLUS' virtual pageant, and establishing safe spaces for all, e.g., Olympus, Bagani, and White House to serve as beacons towards taking care of oneself.

Finally, we also take into consideration the arts as an outlet to promote sexual health and mental health. We continue with the CombiNation comics series, and we also provide digital arts that portray one's continuation of life no matter what.

It has always been my passion to nurture one's self-worth to motivate one to instill self-care. But in time that you cannot take care of yourself anymore, my dream of a farm that would cater to the aging members of the community is also slowly coming to fruition. Aside from that, also watch out for our December activities in preparation for the World AIDS Day 2020!

This feat adds only to the list of the accomplished causes of Mujer in ending discrimination and advocating for equal rights in the city. On October 24, twelve enthusiastic people joined the community center’s orientation for volunteers. In an orientation packed with activities and discussions, the volunteers from Batch Kantutay learned about HIV 101, SOGIESC, and HIV testing to prepare as volunteers of the Bacolod-based center.

Aside from honing their skills and knowledge, they also interacted with current volunteers to learn more about the life of a volunteer in the center. Lavaro hopes that with the skills and training, the twelve new volunteers will be ready to face the ‘new normal’ with Bagani Community Center.

Kagay-an PLUS to engage more ambassadors through their annual pageant written by EJ Marquez December 1 is known to be World AIDS Day and is celebrated by HIV advocates worldwide. Every year since 2016, Kagay-an PLUS Inc. has been organizing a pageant aligned with the advocacy. In celebration, the organization will launch the first online "Mister and Miss Kagay-an PLUS," a pageant search for Cagayan De Oro (CDO) human rights, HIV and AIDS ambassadors.

Prior to the pageant, the aspiring ambassadors shall undergo a week-long training related to the HIV advocacy. The sessions will tackle topics such as peer education, human rights, understanding STI, HIV and AIDS, SOGIE, and the Republic Act 11166.

National Coming Out Day: Unapologetically True to Oneself

National Coming Out Day is an annual awareness day to promote a safe world for the LGBTQIA+ community to live truthfully and openly. It all started back in October 11, 1987 where half a million people participated in the March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights.

National Coming Out Day was inaugurated in 1988 by Robert Eichberg and Jean O’Leary. Eichberg was psychologist from New Mexico and O’Leary was an openly lesbian political leader and long-time activist from New York. Since then, October 11 was coined National Coming Out Day in commemoration of the historic event.

In an article for the Times back in August 15, 1995, Eichberg was quoted “Most people think they don't know anyone gay or lesbian, and in fact, everybody does. It is imperative that we come out and let people know who we are and disabuse them of their fears and stereotypes.” And since then, other groups typically within the LGBT community rallied every year fearlessly fighting against homophobia and oppressive views by being unapologetically true to one’s self.

Today, we reap the fruitful results of generations of equal rights activism that has come before us. National Coming Out Day has become a global celebration of coming out to raise awareness of the LGBTQIA+ community and our civil rights. We are truly blessed by the privilege we have now, but the fight isn’t over yet. We’ve merely broken the glass ceiling and made them aware of the humanity that is LGBTQIA+ but we have yet to achieve true acceptance.

Uncovering the deserted realities about suicide in the LGBTQIA+ community written by Bet Domingo Trigger warning – a statement that "Fact U," an online live talkshow of Spaces.MNL about socio-political topics concerning the LGBTQIA+ community, constantly reminded its viewers on October 5 during its emotive episode while bravely uncovering the deserted realities about suicide. The show's episode was also in solidarity with the country's observance of the National Mental Health Awareness Month this October and the National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month last September.

Hosted by Miss Trans Global Mela Habijan, and LoveYourself volunteers Janlee Dungca and Peachy Roberts, the episode emphasized the importance of building awareness on mental wellness and its related topics to address the growing concern of depression, anxiety, and other mental illnesses experienced by the community members.

Habijan stressed that fear is the biggest challenge for the LGBTQIA+ members' mental health, following the persisting social discrimination. "We all know that it's fear because we went through the process of overcoming with our fear from our true selves, fear of acceptance from our family, and fear of what lies ahead," Habijan said.

She added that it's like vines branching out from other forms of anxieties, and as fears pile up over time, it'll be more difficult for someone experiencing it to ask for professional help and continue living.

Aside from fear, Dungca also raised concerns about the Philippines' lack of mental health facilities and support programs.

As a taboo in traditional Filipino culture, Dungca underscored the need to have a stronger voice to fight off stigma towards the LGBTQIA+ members and the issue surrounding mental health. Emphasizing the intersectionality of these topics, "I hope we can have stronger support from the community," she said.

Meanwhile, Roberts shared that giving family and friends time could mean a lot, especially if they experience heavy emotional burdens. "A simple message of 'How are you' can provide them with a sense of hope to continue," Roberts said. She added that being aware of our problems enables us to know how to address them.

In their recent study, the World Health Organization documented that 10-20 percent of children and adolescents in the world are affected by mental health problems. Most of these instances occur before they even turn 14 years old. An aggravating fact that even if Filipinos were hailed as one of the happiest and optimistic people globally, the National Center for Mental Health noticed an increase in calls about depression and anxiety.

UNDERSTANDING SUICIDE To help digest the meaty subject, guests of Fact U were Riyan Portuguez and Bro. Noel Segismundo Cabigting. Portuguez is a registered psychologist and the content creator for "Your Millenial Psychologist"

Cagbigting emphasized that suicide is complicated, and that there is no absolute template as to why a person commit suicide. "By looking however into the stigma revolving around it, this makes us better understand the phenomenon," he said. He added that stigma is fed by fear, and the fear of the unknown can be terrifying for some. Culturally, he also mentioned Filipinos' idea of a "happy person" as counter-intuitive for mental health care and more commonly associated with "toxic positivity."

Portuguez supported Cabigting, emphasizing that there's a need for a careful understanding of the person and the complex situation he/she's in. "This is a serious public health, following various studies that suicide is the second leading cause of death between ages 15-19 annually, and 800 people are killed due to suicide," Portuguez affirmed.

The guests also mentioned the risk factors and a mnemonic that might help us understand a person's mental health. According to Cabigting, the risk factors that may affect one's ideation and commission of suicide may include the following: 1) Knowing someone who committed it; 2) Had attempted it previously; 3) Comorbidity of experiencing personal crises (e.g., loss of loved one, employment, etc.) while having

mental health issues; and 4) Socio-cultural oppression. He prudently reasoned out that it's truly a personal matter, where some people may manifest the risk factors, and some may never display but still lost their lives from it.

Citing a Suicidology concept, Portuguez introduced the ISPATHWARM mnemonic, which literally means ideation, substance abuse, purposelessness, anger, trapped in a vulnerable situation, hopelessness, withdrawing oneself, anxiety, recklessness, and mood changes. She stressed that it's just a guide to check on one's love ones and does not include all factors that may cause someone to die by suicide.

LoveYourself White House: challenges and opportunities in starting over written by Ryan Taborada

Starting over can be something as routine as getting a new haircut, or monumental like ending a relationship or leaving people behind.

There are so many ways to compel us to start over - good or bad, it helps us grow and become better people through it. But what if the thing that forces us to start over is a global pandemic?

On February 15, 2020, LoveYourself White House held a post-Valentine’s Day fundraiser. By this time, there had been three confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the country, one of which resulted in death. The threat was looming but had not palpably set in yet. That was the last big event most of us would gather for. In the weeks that followed, LoveYourself White House would strictly observe a skeletal system. Then on March 28, Mayor Edgar Labella placed Cebu City under a State of Enhanced Community Quarantine.

Just like the rest of the world, this is what LoveYourself White House had to reckon with. Only less than a year old, the community center had a find a new home.

I was back to where I was before I volunteered, a homebody who was supposed to be too comfortable being one. My contributions to the organization at this point stayed online, with some preplanned events made digital instead of holding them out in the sun, at the beach, as we had been excited about.

This wasn’t its first time facing this hurdle.

The community center’s official launch in April 2019 was already an attempt to start over as LoveYourself tried to establish a presence in Cebu back in 2012. It had been too early at the time to expand to a different region so the move was shelved.

In 2018, the decision to bring LoveYourself to Cebu was revisited. This finally came to fruition, with a facility provided by Macare Medicals, Inc. in a viable location very close to a beloved landmark, the Fuente Osmeña. It was this large house with a white exterior that could only be aptly called LoveYourself White House.

It seemed then that LoveYourself White House was making up for all those years it missed out. Dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers went full throttle, forming committees, staging events, and, most importantly, serving clients five days a week.

By the end of 2019, there were around 160 volunteers that had catered to nearly 2,500 clients.

I joined LoveYourself in September 2019, as part of Batch Dasig, the fifth batch of volunteers in Cebu. I didn’t expect that volunteering was a means of starting over for me in some liberating way. After having worked freelance, purely from home, for over a decade, I was finally going out, meeting new people, making new friends.

From being a homebody, I was transformed into someone who would drive models to the venue of a runway show during World

AIDS Day, enter different workplaces to assist in HIV Caravans and outreach programs, and bring my work to the center in the middle of the noise and manic energy of the Sinulog festival because I just had to be there with my new friends, my fellow volunteers.

In the middle of June, we were told we had to find a new home. BioPATH Clinical Diagnostics, a sister firm of Macare, needed space for its molecular diagnostic services, primarily focusing on the detection of SARS CoV-2 infection. As essential as it is to keep on catering to clients both new and existing, especially those living with HIV, COVID-19 had warranted this change to be immediate. LoveYourself White House had to temporarily close. The one person who would be most affected by this, on almost a daily basis, is Rad Granada. Rad is one of LoveYourself White House’s most dedicated volunteers. He’s the deputy head of HIV Ops, a Life Coach assisting newly diagnosed clients, and part of the Recruitment Team designated to source new volunteers. By profession, he is a Medical Technologist, who just found a new job assigned in the molecular laboratory at, where else, BioPATH. LoveYourself White House was his second home as a volunteer for almost a year. He gets to remain there now that it serves a different essential purpose.

“The changes that took place in the old White House to its current state had been

very drastic,” shares Rad. “Gone are the days of the cozy and welcoming feeling that the old White House brings to every client, staff, and volunteers alike. Yet volunteering is in Rad’s blood. After all, he waited years for LoveYourself to get to Cebu for him to join. When the circumstances allowed for him to do so, Rad would continue counseling. At first it was through Project Reach, an initiative that involved one-on-one outreach for clients to have their free screening when the community center was unavailable. Soon enough thankfully, LoveYourself White House found a new home.

The thing about being a volunteer-driven organization is that LoveYourself is made up of people with diverse backgrounds brought together by one advocacy. One of our volunteers, the head of internal and community events, is Stefan Dion Garcia, a real estate developer.

Stefan grew up in a house that his family inherited from their great matriarch.

It had a Lomboy tree (“duhat” in Tagalog, “Java plum” in English) in their garden that attracted many birds. It became a pastime for Stefan and his friends birdwatch on the tree. In 2012, Stefan’s family moved out of that house. It was transformed into different establishments serving various purposes. Now, it’s being transformed once again, this time as LoveYourself White House.

LoveYourself’s advocacy is dear to Stefan’s heart as he witnessed firsthand how the organization has helped his friend in Manila live with HIV. He’d promised himself then that if LoveYourself were to open in Cebu, he would be part of it. And so he did.

When he learned that LoveYourself White House was moving, he offered his old childhood home. “I realized its central location and its size and design would make an excellent testing, treatment, and community center,” Stefan says.

It did seem like the stars were aligned.
