Ripon Farm Services: On Track Issue 4

Page 1

Welcome to the fourth issue of the Ripon Farm Services magazine, created to keep you and your business On Track with the latest news from Ripon Farm Services and the latest innovations from our industry leading manufacturers.

We began the year on a high note with our annual Ripon Farm Services Show in Harrogate — a flagship event that continues to bring together customers, suppliers, and industry partners from across the region. Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make it another successful and memorable occasion.

In February, we were pleased to announce a new partnership with Nugent Trailers. Known for their durability and reliability, Nugent is a very high-quality brand that further strengthens our commitment to offering robust, dependable equipment that meets the evolving needs of our customers.

We recognise that it continues to be a challenging time for the farming industry, with many facing pressures on multiple fronts — but as ever, the resilience and determination of the agricultural community remain strong. It’s onwards and upwards, and we remain committed to supporting you every step of the way.

Looking ahead, we’re excited about what the rest of the year holds, with several new product launches on the horizon. Staying true to their legacy of engineering excellence and innovation, John Deere has recently unveiled three major additions to their range: the 500R self-propelled sprayer, the F8 and F9 forage harvesters, and the next generation of round balers. These latest advancements highlight John Deere’s continued drive to push the boundaries of agricultural technology — and we look forward to bringing you more details in due course.

As we move into the summer months, we look forward to catching up with you at various agricultural shows and wish you every success with harvest 2025.

Let’s “keep on keeping on.”

John Deere Unveils Next Generation Forage, Spraying, and Baling Solutions

John Deere proudly launches three advanced machines designed to enhance productivity and precision in modern farming: the F8 and F9 Series Forage Harvesters, the 500R Sprayer, and the Next-Generation Round Balers. Each offers powerful performance, intelligent automation, and seamless connectivity to the John Deere Operations Center™.

F8 and F9 Self-Propelled Forage Harvesters

John Deere has launched its new F8 and F9 series self-propelled forage harvesters, designed to enhance operator comfort, silage quality, and overall harvesting efficiency. These machines feature a redesigned operator environment with the ergonomic CommandPRO™ joystick and a faster, larger G5/G5Plus CommandCenter™ touchscreen display. Customisable driver profiles and intuitive controls make setup and operation easier, while optional extended displays allow for real-time monitoring and adjustments.

The F8 series runs on JD14X engines (425–645 PS), and the F9 models offer even more power with JD18X (up to 820 PS) or Liebherr V12 engines (up to 1020 PS). All engines are optimised with HarvestMotion™ or HarvestMotion™ Plus for better fuel efficiency and performance. Advanced tech features include Ground Speed Automation, Active Fill Control, and ProTouch Harvest for simplified, automated operations. New silage enhancements include the IDS 2.0 dosing system and improved kernel processors, making the F8 and F9 among the most advanced forage harvesters for the 2026 model year.

500R Self-Propelled Sprayer

John Deere has introduced the 500R flagship sprayer, built for top-tier performance, precision application, and maximum operator comfort. Designed with input from farmers, it offers excellent visibility, a balanced chassis for optimal traction, and a narrow profile for easy road transport. The premium cab includes Category 4 filtration, smart storage, and infotainment with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Operators benefit from the fast, high-resolution G5Plus CommandCenter™, a new CommandArm for intuitive controls, and an ergonomic joystick for easy speed and spraying adjustments.

The Next Generation of Round Balers

The 500R features advanced technology like BoomTrac™ Pro 2 for precise boom height control and improved stability, reducing drift and operator stress. Its CommandDrive™ hydrostatic transmission ensures efficient power distribution and traction, while reducing fuel use during transport. Precision spraying is delivered through the PowrSpray™ system, ExactApply™ nozzle control, and turn compensation technology—achieving up to 98% spray accuracy. Built from trusted John Deere components, the 500R combines powerful performance with refined control, making it a standout solution for modern, high-efficiency spraying.

John Deere has launched its next-generation fixed and variable chamber round balers, designed to boost productivity, automation, and bale quality while offering smart connectivity and ease of use. All models feature advanced ISOBUS integration with the John Deere Operations Center™, allowing real-time monitoring of bale data such as moisture, weight, and location. The variable chamber models (V452R and V462R) include innovative weave automation and active hitch tracking, enhancing bale consistency and reducing manual input. High-speed bale release and improved compression deliver denser bales more efficiently. Wrapping balers now offer optional built-in weighing systems, and all models benefit from easier maintenance, intuitive controls, and handsfree unloading. With these upgrades, John Deere provides a smarter, more connected baling solution for modern farming.

A Century of Kramer: 100 Years in Motion

This year is a very special one for Kramer, as they celebrate their 100th anniversary! For a century, Kramer has stood for quality, expertise and passion, developing pioneering technology.

1925

The Kramer brothers built their first motorised mover - the beginning of the eventful history.

“How To”: Creating Harvest Work Plans on machines equipped with Gen4 & G5 displays

Efficient harvest operations begin with effective planning. This guide explains the step-by-step process of creating and sending Harvest Work Plans directly to Gen4 and G5 display-equipped machines using John Deere Operations Center, and how they can be sent wirelessly to JDLink connected equipment or downloaded for USB import. By creating and sending harvest plans to your fleet you can simplify in-field setup, reduce entry errors, and ensure accurate harvest records are captured automatically.

Creating Work Plans

1. After logging into the John Deere Operations Center, navigate to the ‘Plan’ tab and select ‘Work Planner’.

2. Next to the ‘Work Planner’ heading, select a crop season (year) and the ‘harvest’ operation type, then select the ‘+ Plan Harvest’ yellow button. You will then be directed to the creation flow that will guide you through a sequence of planning steps needed.

3. The first step is ‘Field Selection’ - select the fields you need in either the map or the table view:

Map View: Select one or multiple fields by clicking the fields on the map.

Table View: Select one or multiple fields from the table on the left-hand side. You can make use of the ‘Table’ button at the top of the list that will expand to a full screen table view, which includes more information such as last crop, variety, product & work.

In both views, a scroll bar and a text search function are available along with filters for client, farm, field, crops and varieties, product and work. Once all required fields are selected, press the ‘Next’ button.

4. The second step is ‘Work Details’ - entering the harvest work details. Follow the flow diagram below to complete this:

Crops & Varieties

Sending and Downloading Work Plans

In the ‘Planned’ tab, select one or multiple work plans that you want to send or download and use the ‘Send to Equipment’ button. This opens the ‘Send to Equipment Dialog’.

The table view, displaying the machines, contains the three columns; Name, Machine Details and Remarks. There are two groups of machines: ‘Assigned to work’, which contains the machines specifically entered in the Work Plan, and ‘All Connected Machines’, which contains all other JDLinkTM connected machines.

The ‘Remarks’ column assists with status information for connected equipment. A link to Stellar Support is integrated within this status information. By clicking on the status details, you will be directed to the Stellar Support page to identify any required updates.

To send planned work wirelessly to JDLink connected equipment, select at least one piece of equipment and use the ‘Send’ button. Equipment enabled with Wireless Data Transfer will receive the work setup file automatically. For equipment not enabled with Wireless Data Transfer, please use Files to transfer the file manually.

To send planned work to Files to download manually and use for USB import, do not select any machine and use the ‘Send’ button. Go to ‘More’ and ‘Files’ , then select the Work Plan .zip file. Use the ‘Download’ button, select the download location and click download again. Retrieve the file from the selected location and move to a USB drive.

Once the Work Plan has been successfully sent wirelessly to the machine, it will be auto-imported by the display. It is also possible to enable Automatic Work Plan Activation to further improve efficiency and seamless transition from field to field.

Automatic Work Plan Activation

By automatically activating work plans when entering a field, this feature fully automates the in-cab display setup. Operators are able to drive into a field and start their work straight away. The display is automatically setup based on the information entered in the Work Plan, which also ensures the high-quality documentation data. It is no longer required to click ‘Okay’ to start a Work Plan, that is suggested via a window shade once the equipment enters the field.

Hardware & Software Requirements

This feature is available for Gen 4 & G5 displays with software version 23-2 or newer.

Instructions

The ‘Automatic Work Plan Activation’ can be enabled in the advanced settings of the ‘Work Setup’ in the display.

With the Gen 4 & G5 display software version 23-2, the Automatic Work Plan Activation’ is defaulted to OFF and needs to be activated manually. The feature will then start work plans automatically when entering a field if the following conditions are met:

Operation of work plan matches to that of the connected implement.

Planned variety, product, and rate match to currently set variety, product & rate.

Planned operator matches the currently set operator.

If these conditions are not met, the operator’s input is required. Then, the known window shade appears and guides the user through the setup.

All done! If you have any problems, please contact our Technology team on 07700 152217 or by emailing technology@riponfarmservices.com.

A Cut Above The Rest: R M Simpson’s Competitive Switch to the John Deere 8600i Forage Harvester

R M Simpson, local to our Darrington branch, switched from a Claas Forage Harvester to a John Deere 8600i SPFH back in April 2024. After their first grass season, we caught up with them to find out what inspired the change and whether they’re happy with their decision…

Tell us a little about your business

We’re a small, family-run agricultural contracting business, now in its second generation. What started back in the early 1980s as a single tractor and baler operation has grown into a full agricultural contracting service — from forage harvesting, both square and round baling, to slurry and muck spreading, and winter maintenance. Over the years, we’ve steadily expanded and modernised, now running a fleet of eight John Deere 6R tractors. While the kit has changed, our focus on quality work and strong relationships with our customers remains exactly the same.

What factors led you to choose a John Deere Forage Harvester?

Our decision to switch brand was heavily influenced by the advanced technology on John Deere’s products, plus our longstanding use of John Deere tractors solidified our trust in the brand’s reliability and integration capabilities with the rest of our fleet.

What was the implementation process like?

We had numerous consultations with the Ripon team to ensure the forager specifications met our requirements exactly. It was delivered ahead of schedule and we had ample opportunity to get accustomed to the machine. We attended specialised operator training the day before harvest started to make sure we were comfortable, and it was fresh in our minds.

Tell us about the John Deere Technology on the Forage Harvester

John Deere’s superior technology is what sets it apart from competitors. We have a John Deere HarvestLab fitted to our 8600i, as a contractor it enhances the level of service that we are able to offer to our customers by providing precise nutritional information ensuring high-quality forage production.

We’re just over one year on since you took delivery of your John Deere 8600i Forage Harvester, what’s the verdict?

Our John Deere 8600i forage harvester has been an invaluable addition to our operation, shortly after deployment it demonstrated marked improvements over our previous equipment.

It has been a really positive experience; throughout the purchasing process, John Deere and Ripon Farm Services provided exceptional support and their presence during initial operations smoothed our transition to the new machine. The forager has proved to be good value and reliable. The advanced features of the product and the dedicated customer support from both John Deere and Ripon present a compelling package.

What were your first impressions?

The John Deere 8600i quickly demonstrated improvements over our previous equipment. The dura-line shear bar significantly reduced wear, maintaining chop quality and lowering fuel consumption. The central lubricating system facilitated easy maintenance, which in-turn reduced our preparation time, making us more productive. The forager’s capability to operate efficiently at lower RPMs also contributed to notable fuel savings throughout the season.

The 64-knife drum is one of the standout features for us, it’s versatile and extended our operational flexibility, allowing us to chop a range of lengths without necessitating cylinder changes, saving valuable time and labour.

We’re really impressed with the ability to adjust feed roller and pick reel speeds from the cab, it allows us to adapt to various grass types and conditions very easily. Back in 2024 the first cut of silage was delayed due to heavy rains, the 8600i was able to process dense and uneven swaths efficiently thanks to its aggressive upper feed roller option.

Another notable feature is the open-door style cutterhead access, it facilitates quick access to the chopping cylinder, which makes maintenance easier and more convenient. The reduction in snagging points and debris accumulation also simplifies the cleaning and maintenance process, saving us additional time.

To find out more about John Deere forage harvesters, please contact your local Sales Manager or our harvesting manager, Ben Moseley on 07580 351517.

Tillage, Transformed: Meet the KUHN OPTIMER

Designed for performance, versatility, and ease of use, KUHN’s OPTIMER range of disc stubble cultivators offers a high-quality solution for surface and medium-depth tillage. With working widths from 3 to 12.5 metres, OPTIMER machines combine power and precision to meet the demands of modern arable farming.

Tailored to Your Tillage Needs

The OPTIMER L features two rows of 510mm discs, working from 3 to 10cm—ideal for shallow stubble incorporation and seedbed preparation. The OPTIMER XL steps up with 620mm discs and working depths of 5 to 15cm, perfect for heavier soils or greater residue volumes. Both ranges benefit from a 700mm underframe clearance, ensuring smooth passage even in dense plant material. Optional extras like levelling boards, front cutter rollers, and KUHN seeding solutions—including SH small seed drills and the TF 1512 front tank—further enhance versatility for one-pass operations.

What Sets Disc Stubble Cultivators Apart?

Disc cultivators like the OPTIMER are ideal for post-harvest work—mixing crop residues, encouraging weed germination, and creating a fine tilth to improve soil structure and mineralisation. With the option of notched discs and precision depth control, KUHN machines balance aggressive cultivation with minimal soil disruption.

The KUHN OPTIMER Advantage

High Work Quality: Forged disc arms, robust elastomer safety blocks, and the optional STEADY CONTROL system maintain consistent working depth and terrain following.

Excellent Residue Flow: One disc per arm and the high underframe clearance allow for easy passage through heavy crop residues without clogging.

Simple to Operate: OPTIMER machines are easy to set up, low-maintenance (with sealed disc and roller bearings), and can be hydraulically adjusted for efficiency and comfort.

Multi-Use Flexibility: From traditional stubble cultivation to green crop seeding, the OPTIMER adapts easily to multiple farming operations.

We currently have the OPTIMER L6000 (6-metre model) in stock —an ideal choice for fast, efficient, and reliable stubble cultivation. We also stock a wider range of KUHN cultivation equipment, including the Cultimer and Performer models.

Whether you’re transporting livestock across the country or moving equipment from site to site, these trailers are designed to perform safely, efficiently, and consistently — backed by Nugent’s commitment to quality and aftercare.

Nugent Dual Drive™ Suspension: Built for Performance and Longevity

Nugent’s patented Dual Drive™ parabolic suspension system, standard across the Commercial trailer range, offers a refined alternative to traditional suspension setups. Featuring a secondary rubber damper and a unique pivot slipper plate, it provides greater control during compression and rebound, significantly reducing vibration and suspension chatter for a smoother, more stable towing experience.

This advanced design helps to minimise stress on the trailer chassis, frame, and towing components, resulting in improved durability and reduced long-term maintenance. By combining the strength of parabolic springs with the damping performance of suspension axles, Dual Drive™ enhances both comfort and reliability—ensuring Nugent trailers stay on the road longer, with less wear and greater efficiency.

PLANT

LIVESTOCK

The Nugent Livestock range is engineered and hand built to last. A front and rear weldment, braced by a cross member frame upon a welded, galvanised chassis ensures maximum strength. Folded side panels give extra reinforcement where it is needed.

- 7 models available, from 8ftX5ft to 16ftX5ft

- Available with Sheep Decks

Available from £5,400 + VAT

The Nugent Plant trailer has been designed for maximum efficiency. Following extensive research, Nugent has designed a weight to load ratio that gives the best pay load, while a low centre of gravity with a bed height of 403mm gives a favourable loading angle which is great for equipment with low ground clearance.

- 7 models available, from 9ft X 4ft to 14ft X 6ft

- Available with Beavertail in 3 models

Available from £3,950 + VAT

UTILITY

FLATBED

The Nugent Flatbed range is available with maximum gross weight up to 3,500kg and sizes from 3 metres to 5.5 metres (10ft-8ft), guaranteeing a suitable model for every application. The spring loaded flip latches on all drop sides prevent undue movement and noise. Coupled with Dual DriveTM suspension, this makes for a ‘reduced rattles trailer’.

- 12 models available, from 10ft X 6ft to 18ft X 7.5ft

Available from £3,950 + VAT

The Nugent Utility is designed to cater for a range of uses from agricultural to domestic requirements, and are perfect for towing behind quads or today’s smaller cars, where extra capacity is necessary.
