NEWS Backflow preventer fails in Brockway Hall

Ripon College’s epidemic of water problems from over winter break continued when the backflow preventer on a pipe in Brockway Hall failed and caused some flooding.

The backflow preventer failed at approximately 5:45 pm on Monday, Jan. 19 and Junior David Firari was one of the people to first discover the leak. He said that, “myself and three other brothers of Theta Chi Fraternity entered Brockway on the Theta Chi side. I peeked around the first floor corner to see if anyone was around. It was then that I noticed water pooling around the mechanical door.”

“A backflow preventer on a water line feeding the hot water tanks failed and allowed water to flow in a mechanical room and out into the hallways, said Brian Skamra, director of the Ripon College Physical Plant.

He explained that the backflow preventer is used to keep the water flowing forward through the pipes and avoid water flowing backwards and contaminating the drinkable water.

Firari and the others called their hall director and the members of Theta Chi began putting towels in front of their doors to keep the water out. “Nate (Ebert) was over in less than five minutes and opened up the mechanical room,” Firari said. “We could see water pouring from some source, possibly a broken pipe or valve, but it was hard to see...”

Firari explained that the Physical Plant arrived about 20 minutes after the hall director and quickly stopped the water. “Members of the cleaning staff were on site, using shop vacuums to suck up the water,” Firari said. “Two Theta Chis used the hallway as a Slip N’ Slide.”

“Fortunately no students were displaced during the event or clean up,” Resident Hall Director, Nate Ebert said, “but keys to empty rooms were ready to be distributed in the event that they needed to exit their rooms.”

“The only damage was a partially soaked rug from the room directly across from the mechanical room,” Firari said. “All in all, the Ripon staff was very quick in responding and addressing the issue.”

Following a series of water problems in campus buildings including Tri-Dorms, Anderson Hall and Storzer Athletic Center, administration are hopeful such

problems are in the past. “I do hope no further water related incidents occur,” Ebert said, “but if they do both our residence life team and plant department team are ready to respond to any situation that may arise.”

CAMPUS SAFETY College responds to safety concerns made by RC students

On Monday, January 30th, 2017, College Days sent out a survey regarding safety on campus. Of the 142 participants, 19% were freshman, 22% were sophomores, 32% were juniors, and 24% were seniors.

Additionally, 67% of participants identified as student-athletes, and 41% claimed to be involved in Greek organizations. The two graphs below illustrated the results of the survey.

Students responded to the survey with comments and concerns. Read some of their responses below:

“Everyone should have no problem feeling safe walking alone on this campus. The buildings here are not too far from another and one can easily be heard in the event one screams for help. The community here is always more than willing to help in the event a student is too intoxicated or during a sexual assault.”

“The college should make a better effort to advertise how they promote safety, especially the use of security for safe rides for students on campus at night.”

“I feel like Ripon is extremely safe, I always feel comfortable leaving my door unlocked and my backpack in the commons. Even though I may have important things in there, I feel that Ripon is the safest college I have ever been to.”

“Let security drive students around. Also move their office back in mapes. Students are out of touch with security.”

“My main issue is lighting that I think is a city problem- since the lighting on the street can be sketchy at times. Otherwise, I park in the I lot on campus and I am terrified to walk to and from there at night since there is only one light source. I am also uncomfortable in calling campus security about this manner because I feel as if there really isn’t anything they could do since I’m just walking to and from my vehicle.”

NEWS CLC considers moving into former bookstore location

The Collaborative Learning Center (CLC), which aims to provide Ripon College students with peer mentoring and help on their assignments, may be moving to the Pickard Commons soon. It currently sits at 420 Thorne St. in what used to be a private home situated between the Johnson and Scott residence halls. With the campus bookstore soon to move to a new location downtown after closing Feb. 2, the CLC may take the bookstore’s former space.

Motivating the possible move are budgetary concerns surrounding the CLC’s maintenance. “It’s an old house and would cost something to really get up to snuff,” said Professor Thomas Truesdell, coordinator of the CLC. According to information from the Wisconsin Historical Society’s website the house that the CLC currently operates out of was built in 1915, making it over a century old.

To some, the CLC’s age adds to its charm.

“I love the atmosphere. It’s very homey, so it’s very peaceful and very comfortable,” said Lucy Izzo, a first-year student who began using the CLC late last

semester and has been a frequent visitor since.

Because of its age and its having been built as a residential home, the CLCs interior reflects a style different from that of other buildings on campus, many of which were constructed years later and with academic functions in mind. “It’s a change,” Truesdell said noting the contrast, “It’s not a cinder block, drop ceiling, fluorescent-lit place with institutional furniture and it’s nice to have a little change of pace once in awhile.”

In its current location, the CLC is on the same road as entrances to the Scott and Johnson residence halls, an entrance to the Tri-Dorms parking lot, and a vehicular entrance into the Quads circle. If moved to the bookstore’s former location in the Pickard Commons, the CLC would be farther from the residence halls but closer to the academic buildings of upper campus. This would shorten the walk for students after getting out of class or eating in the Pub or Commons.

Izzo explains that no matter the CLC’s location she would continue to use it and feels that due to the help the CLC provides other students would as well. “I think of all the papers I’ve had, I don’t know what I would have done without the CLC if I didn’t have them check my papers,” she said.

No matter what decision is ultimately made as to whether or not the CLC will stay in its current location change will not come immediately. “Certainly nothing will happen this semester because, let’s say for the sake of argument, that it’s decided the CLC will move down to where the bookstore is...[which] is not a space that the CLC can just move into and say, ‘Here we are.’ There would need to be stuff done; it would need to be reconfigured to some degree,” Truesdell said. “Nothing is imminent; let’s put it that way.”

NEWS MLK day of service

Students and faculty give back to the Ripon community

22 Ripon College students and faculty participated in service projects in the Ripon community for Martin Luther King Day on Monday, Jan. 16. This is a fairly new tradition for Ripon College, spearheaded by Kyonna Henry and Meg Carne to establish Martin Luther King Day as a day of service at Ripon College to give back to the Ripon community.

Last year, through the efforts of Henry and Carne, the MLK Day of Service was established in Ripon College where students and faculty could sign up to work together in service projects within the Ripon community for a full day of community service.

“We believed that MLK Day should be a day ‘on’ instead of a ‘off’. A day to come together to volunteer and give back to communities while honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King,” said Henry, director of multicultural affairs at Ripon College. “We need go out and serve our community, reflect on social injustices, and make our community better just as Martin Luther King did for his community,” she said.

The MLK Day of Service is observed as a national day of service dedicated to bringing people together and strengthening community relationships through service. This year, 12 students and faculty volunteered at the Ripon Children’s Learning Center and 10 at the Ripon Food Pantry. At the Ripon Food Pantry, the participants carried out boxes and bins of food to different individual’s cars coming to the food pantry to get items. Despite the cold and dreary weather, first-time participant Professor Michael Mahoney had a rewarding and fun experience volunteering at the Ripon Food Pantry.

people from outside the Ripon College community while doing it,” he said.

At Ripon Children’s Learning Center, the women’s basketball team, President Zach Messitte, Henry, and other students helped the children with their assignments. The assignments were based on teaching them the history of Martin Luther King Day and the Civil Rights Movements through short readings and word search puzzles.

Junior Jairo Javier, who volunteered at the Children’s Learning Center, commented on the experience. “Dr. Martin Luther King stood for creating a more unified community and in reference to today, that message is still being encouraged and I love that Ripon College takes a role in it,” he said.

“As students, we are constantly busy and to have a day where we are encouraged to do something else and get to know our community is wonderful.”

Slowly but surely, Henry hopes that MLK Day of Service will become a Ripon College tradition where more students and faculty become involved and engaged in service activities not only on MLK Day but throughout the school year.

FEATURE Bringing ‘Measure for Measure’ from the 17th century to the 1930s

Members of Ripon College’s theater department are beginning the spring semester with William Shakespeare’s “Measure for Measure,” challenging themselves to help their audiences appreciate the bard’s words and work.

Sophie Widman says, “I hope people come away with a sense of what it means to put others before yourself...[Also,] fighting for what you believe in and coming out of it stronger, not being afraid to challenge others when you don’t think something is right, and speaking up for yourself as well.”

The cast has been rehearsing incessantly in order to perfect their lines, body movements or lack of movement for Isabella, and blocking and will continue to do so until the play opens on Wednesday night, March 1st. “Come see the show!” says Widman, along with others involved in the production, as the theater department moves “Measure for Measure” to the 1930s stage of oppression and corruption.

Trouble arises in the dark comedy when the Duke (Brennan Kane ‘17) places Angelo (Jimmy Balistreri ‘19) in charge of Vienna during his absence.

Angelo decides to enforce the laws against fornication that has been previously disregarded under the Duke’s reign, thereby sentencing Claudio (Mike Baumhardt ‘17) to death. Claudio’s sister Isabella (Sophie Widman ‘18), a nun, must then decide between her brother and her religious beliefs as Angelo provides

The play will be performed beginning March her with an opportunity to save Claudio.

Amsden has transformed the play from its original five acts into two acts and chose to change the setting from the 17th century to the 1920s, early 1930s, during the Prohibition era. Performing as the Duke, Brenna Kane says, “[The play] has comedic moments and serious ones alike that transcend the period they were written in, making them accessible and understandable to us 400 years later. And we have been working very hard to do justice to the spirit of Shakespeare’s work.”

FEATURE Valentine’s Day: chocolates, ice cream and monologues The campus and community offer a variety of ways to celebrate Valentine’s Day.

On Tuesday, Feb. 14, Ripon College students have a chance to celebrate Valentine’s Day in a new unique way.

This Valentine’s Day, Ripon College is hosting the Bovay Launch Party featuring ‘The Vagina Monologues” at Bovay’s: Ripon College Study Bar and Mercantile. Everyone is welcome to come. The doors at 5pm with the show starting at 5:30pm.

The event is a co-collaboration between Ripon College Feminists, the Theatre department and the non-profit organization V-Day at which students and professors will perform a theatrical staged reading of “The Vagina Monologues.”

According to senior Allison Macknick, one of the students in charge of the event, “The Vagina Monologues” is a play written by Eve Ensler based on interviews of numerous women.

“The play, by Eve Ensler, is a collection of monologues taken from real interviews of over 200 women talking about how they feel about their own vaginas. These interviews range from hilarious to poignant to raunchy to serious to uplifting. ‘The Vagina Monologues’ challenges audiences to break down misconceptions and celebrate vaginas.”

Macknick noted the performance is closely related to Valentine’s Day.

“This plays in two-fold: 1) On Valentine’s Day of 1988, Eve Ensler founded the V-Day organization, and ever since then, ‘The Vagina Monologues’ has been traditionally performed on that day. 2) So much of this play is about women learning to love themselves, and V is for vagina and Valentines.”

Since it’s formation, the Ripon College Feminists always have wanted to host and perform “The Vagina Monologues”, and the members are excited at the fulfillment of their dream.

“This is a project I’ve personally always wanted to do here at Ripon, and has been a long-standing goal for the RC Feminists since its conception,” said Macknick. “It is an incredibly powerful piece that entertains, informs, and dares you to think. Vaginas are amazing, strong, and part of the human body. However, dialogue around vaginas has always been hushed and shamed for far too long, even to the point of being uncomfortable with saying the word. If the best we’ve got currently is ‘blood coming out of here whatever’, it’s time to focus on that ‘whatever’.”

Along with the performance, food and drink will be offered with the possibility of naughty cookies, and the entrance fee is a free-will donation with profits going toward the Oshkosh Women’s Center and V-Day.

The Ripon community, also, offers ways to celebrate Valentine’s Day. Watson’s Tea and Treats, located 208 Watson St., is selling Valentine’s Day gift baskets. The baskets start at $24.99 and include one medium popcorn, one small popcorn, three caramels and a box of four assorted chocolates. The boxes can be customized by including more items or changing sizes, adding to the cost. If one wants something cold and sweet to go with their popcorn, then Culver’s flavor of the day on Valentine’s Day is double strawberry.

Blue Mountain trip peaked in January Dr. Joe Hatcher brings students to Jamaica for over a decade

It’s the people who really pull you back. I love it before travelling to Jamaica two weeks in May. This year was a bit different. The trip was not an in-focus so much.”

That’s how senior Sydney Radandt recalls course, but rather a one-week-long volunteer trip Jamaica. She was one of eight Ripon College open to the community.

“Alumni are welcome to come along. The trip students who traveled this past January to the Blue Mountains, Jamaica to volunteer in Hagley Gap, one isn’t for academic credit any more, so that reduces the of mountains’ highest living communities. “Ripon cost of the trip considerably,” Hatcher said.

From the eight students who attended, all but College” is a common and familiar name to the Blue Mountain locals, as students and faculty have been one had never been to the Blue Mountains before.

For most of the students, Hagley Gap was an entirely new and unknown community, but for one of the students, this trip was about catching up with old friends. For Radandt, this January was her third time to Blue Mountains in the past 18 months.

“Honestly it is hard for me to talk about Jamaica without getting emotional,” Radandt said. “After the first time traveling there, I knew that it wouldn’t be my last. I have actually revolved my senior seminar project around the Blue Mountain Project. It involves research at the grass-roots level in Jamaica, as well here in the States. I am excited to jump into that. In fact, you can find me back there over Spring Break.”

“Sydney coming along really made a difference; it gave me a very enthusiastic trip leader...The whole group was great; everyone got along well and supported each other,” Hatcher said.

“What I have tried to bring back with me is to not be so concerned with time. I’ve tried walking slower and not trying to be so worried about doing a million things every day,” Goral said.

The Blue Mountains of Jamaica are expected to make an impact on even more generations of Ripon College Students. A student organization, Student Volunteers for the Blue Mountain Project, plan to travel back to Hagley Gap in August 2017.

What can we at Ripon College learn from Ohio State and their recent lockdown situation? A lot. On Monday, Nov. 28 students at Ohio State University (OSU) received an emergency alert through their campus system and on social media that indicated students were to “Run. Hide. Fight.” Their initial alert indicated there was an active shooter on campus and students were to respond using their training of the Run. Hide.

Fight. system.

Ripon College students have been trained in this manner as well. Each August during Welcome Week the Student Life staff holds a session on how they recommend students respond if there was an active shooter situation here on campus. The training instructions students to do the following:

Run. If it is safe to exit the area where you are currently located-do so. And run. Keep running until you are as far away from the situation as you can be. Get off campus. In one session someone half joked that you should run until you hit Green Lake. The safest place you can be is where the danger is not.

Hide. When running is not possible then students should hide. If the danger is in the building where you are-then find someplace to hide. If you can, barricade the doors. Turn off the lights and hide yourself away from windows and out of sight. Our training instructs students how to use a belt to disable the hinge arm on a door and locking all doors that you can lock. Wait in your hiding spot until the police arrive. Let the police unlock that door, don’t open it just because someone identified themselves as an officer, it might be someone impersonating the police to get access to you. The police will get keys and access, wait for them to come to you.

Fight. When you can’t run or hide, your last option is to fight. This is described as a fight for your life.

Use anything you can as a weapon: nearby fire extinguishers, chairs, desks, anything in that space. Work as a team with others in the room to take down the threat if you can.

Ripon has an emergency text messaging system called RAVE. Students are automatically entered into this system with the cell phone number they provided when they enrolled and that is one reason the College requests you update that information each semester. Any student can log on to https://www.getrave.com/ login/ripon and add other phone numbers if you want your parents or anyone else to have access to those alerts. Students should use their email address as their user name and register their accounts if they are logging in for the first time.

The situation at Ohio State is a familiar one in recent history. But in the Buckeye Alert to campus OSU instructed students to follow the training that Ripon uses as well. The Ripon Police use that same training with all the schools in the area. Once the situation was under control at OSU, students got another alert letting them know that campus was no longer on lockdown. Ripon’s emergency systems have the same capability and protocol if something like that were to happen here.

Senior seminar business simulation team scores in top 100 among 3,500 teams worldwide submitted by Professor David Sakrison

A team of four Ripon College seniors was ranked among the Global Top 100 teams in The Business Strategy Game (BSG), a sophisticated online business simulation in use in the College’s Senior Seminar in Business Management (BSA-452). The team members were Seniors Haylea Hoskins, Dan Knox, Tony Michelon, and Justin Wiersma. In six out of ten decision rounds, their company, which they called “Nemesis,” ranked from 85th to 61st highest weekly score among more than 3,500 teams at 260 colleges and universities worldwide. The capstone course was led by Instructor of Business Management David Sakrison.

Announcing the team’s place in the weekly rankings, the BSG author team stated: “You should be quite proud of your students for such an excellent performance — a performance that reflects quite well on you and the caliber of instruction that students are receiving in your course.”

In the online simulation at Ripon College, each team of three or four students manages an athletic shoe company, in competition with other teams in the same class, making strategic decision about supply, production, distribution, marketing, finance, social responsibility, and other factors.

After each week’s round of decisions, each team is automatically scored and ranked on earnings per share, return on investment, stock price, credit rating, image rating, and ability to meet investors’ expectations, which are combined to yield an overall weekly score. Each round represents one year in the life of the company. In the fall of 2016, Sakrison’s class had four teams totaling 15 students.

“I am really pleased with the performance of all four teams,” Sakrison said. “The simulation is challenging – like a real business -- and all the students told me it was a valuable experience. “Nemesis” was ahead from the start, Sakrison added, but the other teams did well, too, “including one team that pulled off a dramatic turnaround from a failing company to a solid performer.”

The Business Strategy Game has been part of Ripon College’s Senior Seminars in business and economics since the fall of 2015 when it was first used by Assistant Professor of Economics AnneChristine Barthel. Over the last 12 months, it has been used worldwide by 54,705 students in 3,318 classes and sections at 614 college and university campus locations in 50 different countries.

The BSG was developed jointly by business faculty at the University of Alabama and by GLOBUS Software, Inc.

SPORTS Red Hawk Player Profile: Emma Goral

Ripon College swimmer Emma Goral is coming off a year in which she was the conference champion in the 100- and 200-meter butterfly. She also was selected to the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Scholar All-America Team as an honorable mention. To be chosen for this honor, swimmers must achieve a grade-point average of 3.50 or higher and have participated in their respective NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships. Goral, who holds 10 school records, already has earned Red Hawk of the Week honors this season and is excited for the rest of the swimming season.

“Some goals I have for the rest of this season is to help our team place fourth or better at Conference and have fun doing it.” Goral said.

The senior psychology major from Oconomowoc, Wis., answered a few questions about herself to help the campus get to know one of the key members on this year’s swimming team.

Q: What is your favorite memory in your swimming career?

A: My first Conference Championship meet where the team collectively broke 16 school records.

Q: What is your favorite thing to do outside of the pool?

A: Doodle, be with friends, and drink coffee.

Q: If you could go back in time, what is something you

would tell yourself the first day you walked on campus?

A: Start preparing for grad school now - it will make your senior year much, much easier.

Q: What are you most looking forward to about second

semester senior year?

A: Making more memories with all of my Ripon friends!

Q: What are your plans for after graduation?

A: Hopefully grad school in clinical or counseling psy-

chology.

A: Grinnell because they have a REALLY nice facility.

A: I competed in the 100 & 200 meter butterfly at the 2008 Olympic Swimming Trials.

SPORTS Father-daughter coaching duo lead women’s basketball team

Athletics have a unique way of bringing together people of different walks of life and creating a type of bond that is similar to that of a family. Many times these relationships have just as much to do with the outcomes of games as the X’s and O’s drawn up by the coach.

Ripon College women’s basketball coach Lauren Johnson happens to have a special bond with a certain member of her coaching staff, her father. After her second season at the helm, the there was an opening on the Red Hawk coaching staff for games and practices.

That’s when the idea came about for Dave Johnson to take a step up to the collegiate level after more than three decades of coaching in high school, including coaching his daughter’s high school varsity team.

Dave Johnson can be found in Storzer all the way from early afternoon to late evening. The Red Hawk assistant helps his daughter in whatever way she needs him from recruiting to planning practices. Dave volunteers his time to insure that Red Hawk basketball continues to improve each and every day.

The stress of coaching a strong program that continues to improve each season has not come at the expense of Coach Lauren Johnson’s relationship with her father and assistant coach. “We probably have one of the best child-parent relationships because our relationship has been strengthened through basketball and competing with and for each other,” she said.

Senior guard Maddie Koster said, “I think that having Coach Lauren and Coach Dave working together

has brought a sense of family to our team. Being a team is like being apart of a big family and Coach Dave and Coach Lauren have shown us what being a family is all about.”

Dave Johnson said, “There are two aspects that make this special to me. I get to work closely with her doing something she is passionate about. That love for the game really started when she was in 4th grade, so basketball has been something we’ve shared for a long time. Also, the opportunity to know her student-athletes and work with them each practice makes this situation special. I’m grateful for the opportunity to interact with them for a few months of the year. They certainly have enriched my life.”

Now coaching a Red Hawk team that is in position to compete for a second-straight conference tournament appearance, Coach Lauren Johnson can see some of her father’s traits in her own coaching style. “We are similar in work ethic and drive and love for the game and love for working with young adults,” she said.

Her father said, “The biggest similarity between us is that we both teach more than the sport. The lessons learned in athletics are numerous beyond the X’s and O’s. You want your players to be successful on the court, but even more-so off the court as contributing members of society who understand the importance of communication and teamwork. Her emphasis on academics and service to others will help her athletes in life after basketball.”

Over the past eight months the College Days has made a few changes.

We have increased the amount of writers on our team, tripled the number of students working on layout and design, launched a new advertisement campaign, and made it possible for those involved to receive academic credit.

Much of our success is credited to our organization’s advisor. Ian Stepleton, editor of the Ripon Commonwealth Press, has guided us and pushed us to dream bigger. He has been awesome, and deserves all of the Ripon Good Cookies in the world for his patience with us.

At the beginning of the year, our staff made a few goals for what we wanted to accomplish this year. One of our goals was to bring you a newspaper each month with news that was not only relevant to you, but up-todate. We aimed to be more visible on campus, and hoped that you have looked forward to each issue released. Similarly, we wanted you to feel that you could come to us with ideas and stories to share about our college community.
