Board of Director’s Corner I continually hear the same question from several businesses and individuals. “What does the Chamber do for me?” In fact, I was one of those asking that question a few years ago – then I got involved – and my question was answered! The Chamber runs several great events each year; Almond Blossom Festival, Main Street Days and Taste of Ripon – all three great community events that also promote local businesses. They also provide “Welcome Buckets” to Riponites, once again helping promote local business and they are also an advocate for Ripon businesses with our local politicians. But for me, the most important thing that the Chamber provides, is the opportunity to meet and network with our other local businesses. We have amazing people that are involved in our local economy! There are monthly Chamber Morning Coffees providing you the opportunity to meet other Chamber members. We have also had a few after work networking functions which have been great! This year the Chamber has also started a quarterly lunch meeting that provides informational and educational value while networking with fellow members.

President’s Message Dear Members,

My name is Janell Zuidervaart, and I am proud to be your 2012-2013 Chamber President! I am married to Kenny Zuidervaart, we have 3 boys and reside in Ripon. Kenny and I were both born and raised right here in Ripon, (well, not BORN here since we don’t have a hospital) and have lived here all our lives! Our parents were also born and raised in Ripon, and they still live here as well! I am co-owner of Friends Salon, (we opened in 2003) and Kenny works for the City of Ripon in the Planning department. With that being said, I can truly say that the love for Ripon runs deep! Our kids can frequently be heard saying, “I love this town”, usually on Sunday afternoon as we are turning down a rather deserted Main Street on our way home from church, or when we are pulling back into town after a vacation. We all feel like Ripon is our safe bubble, we joke that we can feel it sucking us in when we exit HWY 99 into Ripon. I know our story is not unique; there are countless family stories similar to ours. On the current Chamber board you will find many with the same story and feeling as me! I think this is what leads us to being on a board that supports business or another organization that continues to make this town that feel like HOME! In the coming year, the board and staff would like to continue to bring you quarterly workshops (BIG thank-you to Marge for bringing them back) to help support your business or organization. I also have a couple ideas that I have to run by the board and staff that would greatly help support your business and life here in this GREAT town of Ripon… you’ll have to stay tuned to find out what they are! I look forward to this year as board President! Sincerely, Janell Zuidervaart President Ripon Chamber of Commerce

Facebook and Email Passwords in Interviews

In letters to the DOJ and the EEOC, Senators Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn) and Charles E. Schumer (D-NY) have called for a federal investigation into "a new disturbing trend" that has seen employers require job applicants supply their user names and passwords for social networking and email websites. Access to those passwords would give employers access to personal information including private photos, email messages, and biographical data that the senators note is "otherwise deemed private." The demand stems from reports indicating that employers across the country have insisted that applicants supply the credentials as part of the interview process. The senators say that this trend could expose employers to discrimination claims and could make it more difficult for applicants to get jobs. Blumenthal said he was "alarmed and outraged" by the reports and said that a ban on the practice is necessary "to stop unreasonable and unacceptable invasions of privacy." The federal investigation, said Blumenthal, would remedy ongoing issues and would buy legislators time to craft statutory protections. Facebook last week warned employers against the practice, saying that it is a violation of Facebook’s Statement of Rights and Responsibilities to solicit a Facebook password. On its March 23, 2012, blog, Facebook’s Chief Privacy Officer, Erin Egan, says that the practice "undermines the privacy expectation and the security of both the user and the user’s friends." The social media giant seconded the senators warning that the practice could expose employers to lawsuits.

"We don’t think employers should be asking prospective employees to provide their passwords because we don’t think it’s the right thing to do," wrote Egan. "But it also may cause problems for the employers that they are not anticipating. Employers also may not have the proper policies and training for reviewers to handle private information. If they don’t — and actually, even if they do — the employer may assume liability for the protection of the information they have seen or for knowing what responsibilities may arise based on different types of information (e.g., if the information suggests the commission of a crime)." CEA will continue to follow this issue. While we do not encourage employers to require job applicants to give them Facebook passwords, it is not “illegal” at this time, for an employer to make this request.
