WHAT IS SLEEP APNEA? Snoring Sleep Apnea Solutions Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a life-threatening disease characterized by pauses in breathing, which stress the heart and deprive the body of oxygen. If left undiagnosed and untreated, over time, these pauses could be fatal. At least 38,000 people die from OSA related complications each year. In addition, sleep apnea increases the chance of serious conditions like high blood pressure, stroke, obesity, diabetes, and heart attack. Snoring, considered common by many, can be an indicator of sleep apnea. It has become a mission of Dr. Bonnie to help her patients discover if they have obstructive sleep apnea and help seek treatment.

7 Ways Sleep Apnea Can Affect Your Health High blood pressure. If you already have it, sleep apnea can make it worse. When you wake up often during the night, your body gets stressed. That makes your hormone systems go into overdrive, which boosts your blood pressure levels.

Heart disease. People with OSA are more likely to have heart attacks.

Type 2 diabetes. Sleep apnea is common among people with this condition -- 80% or more of them may have OSA.

Weight gain. Sleep apnea can make your body release more of the hormone ghrelin, which makes you crave carbs and sweets which can lead to weight gain. Extra pounds raise your chances of getting sleep apnea, and the condition also makes it harder to slim down.

Adult asthma.

Oral Appliance Therapy Traditionally, sleep apnea has been treated by the use of CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure), a machine that streams air into the nose or both nose and mouth via a mask. While effective, about 70 percent of patients find the CPAP uncomfortable and end up not using the device. Patients often prefer oral appliances, citing comfort and convenience among the top benefits. A proven and reliable method for treating sleep apnea, oral appliances are recommended by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and covered by Medicare and most insurance companies.

Science hasn’t proven a link to OSA, but people who get sleep apnea treatment may find they have fewer asthma attacks.

Acid reflux. Treatment can help reduce acid reflux by the decrease in inflammation of the throat.

Car accidents. Those with OSA are 5x more likely to have accidents than those who do not have it.

Saving Lives Dr. Bonnie is a diplomate with the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine, which is widely recognized as the gold standard in dental sleep medicine. This included the completion of a mastery track, comprehensive, clinicallyfocused, and evidence-based education program and has completed over 300 hours of training in dental sleep medicine along with the passing of a rigorous National exam for the distinction. Dr. Bonnie is trained to evaluate the anatomy of the mouth and surrounding areas which aids in treating patients with OSA. Dr. Bonnie's family experienced loss due to OSA and she now gets to see first-hand how her training helps change the lives of her patients, for the better, in really remarkably ways.

HAVING HEADACHES OR FACIAL PAIN? The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) works like a sliding hinge connecting each side of the jaw bone to the bones of the skull. The bones and joints are separated by a shockabsorbing disc which helps the jaw open and close smoothly. The muscles around the jaw contract each time we speak, eat, or even smile. TMJ dysfunction may occur when the shock-absorbing disc becomes inflamed due to functional stresses or when the upper and lower jaw does not align with the corresponding jaw joint. Common symptoms of TMJ pain are headaches, neck pain, difficulty opening, or clicking of the jaw when one tries to eat. The cause of TMJ disorder varies from patient to patient. So, treatment must be case-specific. Patients can find relief when they seek treatment from experienced dentists, specifically trained to treat TMJ pain. These dentists can diagnose the cause of the patient’s discomfort, help relax the muscles causing the pain and customize a mouth guard that keeps the stressed muscles in a relaxed position. Tscan technology is an integral tool in the diagnostic process of TMJ disorders. Much more predictable than the traditional “bite and grind color strips”, Tscan technology uses pressure and timing to evaluate the alignment of teeth. If teeth are out of alignment, the surrounding muscles can become stressed, tender, and inflamed. Information provided by the Tscan helps the doctors at Rio Vista Dentistry make a plan to accurately adjust and minimize the destructive impact of maligned teeth. Common misconceptions in treatment: Any mouth guard works the same. Each patient is unique and so are the factors related to TMJ pain. Dr. James and Dr. Bonnie customize mouth guards to reduce pain associated with TMJ inflammation based upon the needs and circumstances of each individual patient. Then, as inflammation decreases, they adjust the mouth guard, in order to ensure each patient experiences maximum relief over time.

Signs and symptoms of TMJ disorders may include: Jaw pain or tenderness Pain in one or both of the temporomandibular joints Aching pain in and around your ear Difficulty chewing or pain while chewing Facial pain Joint locking, making it difficult to open or close your mouth TMJ disorders can also cause a clicking sound when you open your mouth or chew

Relief is immediate. Though therapy can bring notable relief from pain caused by TMJ inflammation, it takes time. However, as inflammation decreases, so does discomfort. Tscan is a computer bite analyzer that allows the dentist to see precisely how much force is on each tooth during function.

“I was referred to Dr. Bonnie De La Rosa Villarreal by the Veteran Administration Healthcare for my TMJ treatment. I had suffered with this condition for more than 14 years and had settled to accept this condition as my fate. Dr. Bonnie is a true technician in this field, an analytical engineer with novel approach to an end goal orientation. She immediately focused on the mechanics of the problem which helped to alleviate the pain. My morning jaw pains and migraines were mitigated, almost non-existent. The mouth guard she produced was of quality material and comfortable to wear to sleep. She’d continuously adjust and refit the guard during subsequent visits to achieve utmost comfort.” – Golden Olunkwa

PERIODONTAL DISEASE ARE YOU AT RISK? Understanding Gum Disease Periodontitis is a disease of the gums which can affect not only oral health but overall health. Studies show the correlation between the harmful bacteria in the mouth and the increased risk for cardiovascular disease, diabetes and even autoimmune disease. Many people are unaware of the seriousness of periodontal disease and, if left untreated, the health challenges it can present. The Rio Vista Dentistry team takes great care to educate patients and provide proper periodontal treatment in order to help patients achieve and maintain great overall health.

Healthy gingiva (gum tissue), periodontal ligament and bone anchor teeth firmly in place.

Therapy Explained Hygienists perform a thorough evaluation, which includes measuring the space between the teeth and gums (periodontal probing) and assessing the health of the gum tissue. Along with periodontal probing, comprehensive x-rays are key to help evaluate any bone loss around the teeth. Hygienists then use a Piezo, a gentle, ultrasonic device to remove tartar from above and below the gum tissue, flush debris and promote healing. A pain free laser is used in conjunction with the Piezo, to vaporize the destructive bacteria, reduce bleeding and expedite healing of the gums.

What Makes Us Stand Out Laser periodontal therapy is unique to Rio Vista Dentistry. Our dental hygienist are certified in laser technology to help vaporize bacteria, this method of cleaning is unique to our practice and has been successful in getting our patients healthy. Our mission here at Rio Vista Dentistry is to help maintain and stabilize your mouth to its healthiest state ever. We take pride in what we do and we truly care about our patients.

Gingivitis develops as toxins, enzymes, and other plaque by-products irritate the gums, making them tender, swollen, and likley to bleed easily.

Periodontitis occurs when plaque by-products destroys the tissue that anchor teeth in the bone. As the disease progresses, pockets form, which allow more plaque to collect below the gum line. Tooth roots are exposed and become susceptible to decay and sensitive to cold and touch.

In advance periodontitis, the teeth lose more support as the disease continues to destroy the periodontal ligament and bone. Unless treated, the affected teeth frequently become loose and may fall out or require removal by a dentist.

Are you at risk? There are several factors that increase the risk of developing gum disease: People who smoke or chew tobacco are more likely to have periodontal disease. Diseases that affect the whole body- such as diabetes, blood, blood cell disorders, HIV infection, making periodontal disease more severe. Many medications - like steroids, some anti-seizure drugs, cancer therapy drugs, blood pressure drugs and birth control pills - can affect the gums. Some medications have side effects that reduce saliva. A lack of saliva can result in a constant dry mouth, which can irritate soft tissues. Tell your dentist about all your medications and any changes that occur in your health.

RIOVISTADENTISTRY.COM | PAGE 16

Teens, pregnant women, and those taking birth control pills face changes in the body's hormone levels. These changes can cause gum tissue to become more sensitive to the toxins produced by the bacteria that cause periodontal disease. Genes may play a role. Some patients may be more likely to get a severe periodontitis. If your parents wear dentures or you have a family history of tooth loss, be extra alert for changes in your gums. The bacteria associated with periodontal disease may be passed between intimate partners and from parent to children.

By using the best technology and essential oils to promote relaxation, we make hygiene therapy feel more like a getaway to the spa." - MARIA T. PEREZ, RDH

Missing or Failing Teeth?

Precision Techniques for Replacing Missing Teeth Precision Techniques Dental Implants have become the gold standard for tooth replacement. They look, feel, and function very much like natural teeth and remove the need to cut down or cap teeth next to missing teeth for a dental bridge. Implants also provide a far better quality of life than removable dentures for replacing a full arch of teeth. Dr. James has been restoring dental implants for his patients since 2000 and has completed over 300 hours of advanced surgical training in implant placement through the American Academy of Implant Dentistry's Maxicourse (TEXMAX). He is credentialed as an Associate fellow of the academy as well. Dr. James understands the importance of precision and accuracy when placing implants for proper function and aesthetics. Rio Vista Dentistry is the only office in the Rio Grande Valley to incorporate X-Guide Dynamic 3D Navigation for more accurate implant placement. This system is paired with Cone Beam 3D imaging and allows real-time 3D views of anatomy during surgery. The ultimate result for the patient is greater accuracy and a better outcome with less pain! Dr. James’ success with 3D guided implant placement has attracted the attention of global implant giant Nobel Biocare and earned him the opportunity to lecture to other dentists throughout the nation on the benefits of incorporating XGuide technology into their practices and using it to treat their patients.

The Benefits of Dental Implants Enhanced Appearance. Dental implants look and feel like your own teeth. Because they are designed to fuse with bone, they become permanent. Improved Speech. With poor-fitting dentures, the teeth can slip within your mouth, causing you to mumble or slur your words. Dental implants allow you to speak without the worry that teeth might slip. Improved Comfort. Because they become part of you, implants eliminate the discomfort of removable dentures. Easier Eating. Sliding dentures can make chewing difficult. Dental implants function like your own teeth, allowing you to eat your favorite foods with confidence and without pain. Self-confidence. Dental implants can give you back your smile and help you feel better about yourself. Improved Oral Health. Dental implants don't require reducing other teeth, as a tooth-supported bridge does. Because nearby teeth are not altered to support the implant, more of your own teeth are left intact, improving long-term oral health. Durability. Implants are very durable and will last many years. With good care, many implants last a lifetime. Convenience. Removable dentures are just that; removable. Dental implants eliminate the embarrassing inconvenience of removing dentures, as well as the need for messy adhesives to keep them in place. Placement and proper alignment of the teeth are considered to create the optimal aesthetic and functional result.

What is a Dental Implant? A dental implant is a replacement tooth. It has a root (a titanium post) that supports a crown, bridge or denture. In most cases, functional temporary teeth can be placed at the same time as the implant.

"I came to Rio Vista Dentistry seeking a consultation on my two front teeth which I lost at age 14 after a fall, these were replaced with two posts and bulky crowns. After sitting with Dr. James and reviewing my case an x-ray showed bone loss and active infection. As a result a care plan was put into place and my previous post and crowns were removed with hopes of replacing these with two implants. The treatment was successful and once the final step was taken and the crowns were placed all I could think was “wow”. The crown size and color were a perfect match! I’m so happy I made the investment in myself. Thank you Dr. James for a job well done!" - Mark Lozano

ALL-ON-4 ® Teeth in one day procedure!

Your smile is our passion. We believe in the power and confidence a healthy smile can bring to our patients. A stable and healthy smile is now possible in one day with the All-on-4 technique. Four implants are placed at strategic locations and angles in the areas of densest bone. New teeth are then attached to the implants. Patients who have severe bone loss or wear dentures now have the opportunity to experience the look and feel of natural teeth through the All-on-4 procedure.

Advantage of Dental Implants Among the many benefits of dental implants are a healthy natural-looking smile, a restored appearance, and renewed eating and speaking. Dental implant solutions are very durable and easy to maintain. With proper care and good oral hygiene, your new dental implants and attached restorations will last many years, or even your entire lifetime.

A Healthy Smile

Above: Long angled implants are placed in the areas of densest and highest volume bone for maximum support. The new teeth are permanently fixed in, providing strong chewing power.

The All-on-4® treatment concept is a costefficient, graftless solution that provides patients with a fixed full-arch prosthesis on the day of surgery. Characteristics include:

The doctors at Rio Vista Dentistry work diligently to ensure that each patient's teeth complement their face. The placement and proper alignment of the teeth are but a few of the factors our doctors consider to create the optimal aesthetic and functional result for each implant placed. Enhanced appearance, the ability to eat and speak with increased comfort and confidence, and a healthy natural-looking smile are among the many benefits of dental implants. Durability and easy maintenance, make dental implants a great choice you can enjoy for years to come.

Full-arch rehabilitation with only four implants. Two straight anterior implants and two implants tilted up to 45º in the posterior. Immediate Function (fixed provisional bridge) For patients meeting criteria for immediate loading of implants. Graftless Procedure Bone grafting is avoided by tilting the posterior implants, utilizing available bone.

ONE-VISIT CROWNS Rio Vista Dentistry uses the 3D CEREC (CEramic REconstruction) system to create high-quality crowns for patients in just one visit. This eliminates the need for a temporary crown and a second visit. A single crown can be designed, made, and placed in less than one hour! The doctors use a digital scanner, the CEREC Primescan, to get the precise digital impressions to make the crown.

They use CEREC's 3D software to design the crown and a milling machine to fabricate it out of high-grade porcelain. For more conservative restorations, they make an onlay or inlay (restorations that fit over or in the cusps of the tooth). Dr. James and Dr. Bonnie have over 20 years of experience working with CEREC technology. Dr. James is also a certified CEREC trainer. The state-of-the-art CERECŽ Primescan digital scanner along with the CEREC milling unit enables doctors to provide crowns in a single day.

GRATITUDE CHANGES EVERYTHING By Daneen James

What makes gratitude such a big deal? Take a minute, think about what happened today or this week that made you smile. Nothing is too small. Someone held the door for you, you found a great parking space, finished a project right on time or got an encouraging text/email when needed most. Now, be honest, don't you feel better? That's the benefit of gratitude. Appreciation generates joy and renews your perspective. Regularly recognizing the good in your life, big and small, improves your health, increases productivity and creates better relationships. Gratitude creates an energy people can't resist. When you look for the best in others, they feel it and can’t help but want to be around you! Praising team members, encouraging colleagues and affirming clients foster thriving professional relationships. Genuinely celebrating the contributions of others promotes creativity and empowers people to make better decisions and feel better about who they are. Our personal and intimate relationships thrive when those closest to us feel valued. Write a letter or leave a note, for your spouse, family or friends, to share why they're special to you. Notice their response. From the inside out You'll be hard pressed to find an area of life that isn't improved by gratitude. Our physical body is no exception. Lower blood pressure, better quality sleep, decreased incidence of depression and addiction are but a few of the health benefits linked to grateful living. As I was driving the other day, I noticed a sign that read "gratitude turns what you have into enough." Being grateful doesn't mean you want less; it just means you don't allow what you want to diminish what you have. Gratitude keeps you from being so focused on the next that you neglect the now. Appreciating what you have instead of fixating on what you believe is missing, increases spiritual awareness. You feel better about yourself and your life, so you're less inclined toward jealousy and envy. The net result is an overall sense of contentment and well-being that helps you better enjoy life. What do you have to lose? The next time you find yourself being critical or feeling irritable, find a reason to be grateful. Take a few minutes each day to highlight the good in your life. Phrases like: I'm grateful for, I appreciate, so glad that, can help get you started. Notice how it changes the way you feel. Make a practice of grateful living and see how it changes your life!
