Carlton the King of The Bass Derby

arlton King has the perfect last name as far as fishing goes and the good he has done in the community.

Carlton has been a Rio Vista resident for 22 years and a Bass Derby participant each of those years. As a child growing up in the Bay Area, his Mom loved to come to Rio Vista to enjoy the beauty of the water and let Carlton and his brothers fish. In 1996, he started working for a company that did tile work in Rio Vista. A few years later he made his way around working in the Bay Area and one of his co-workers mentioned that he should look into buying a home here. Carlton didn’t think that would be possible, but sure enough, he and his wife Adah stopped by the sales office. There were two houses left and they fell in love with one of them. Within a few days they became residents of a city that he loved as a child.

Besides fishing, the other passion that Carlton has is inspiring young people and getting to know his neighbors. For about 7 years he and his wife would give away toys on Halloween. He really wanted to show his appreciation to his fellow neighbors, so he Our Sponsors Our Sponsors would go to Walmart with a 5 x 12 trailer and load it up with bikes and all kinds of toys. Each child that came to the Emigh Emigh would receive a raffle Livestockdoor Livestock ticket. One year he had over 800 tickets given out.

Carlton is also a huge positive advocate towards the Bass Derby & Festival. During last October’s derby, he drove through the Human Bean drive-thru to get a coffee. The worker asked him, “what are you doing up so early?” He replied, “It’s the Bass Derby time, everyone in town knows that and I’m fishing the derby.” When she handed him his coffee she had written on the cup, “You’re a Winner!” She was right, he won first place with his 3rd catch that day. Carlton spends his free time chasing Crappie while he waits for Chambers email letting him know its “Bass Derby Time.”

DEREK ABEL BAND SAT. - OCT. 8 - 2:00 PM-4:00 “Our music blends blues, jam, funk, along with other amazing genres and influences that create the sound each individual brings to create the unity of sound we emanate. If we had to pick our largest influence of our sound, it has to be the amazing one and only Warren Haynes.”

GROOVY JUDY - FRIDAY OCT. 7 - 6:30 PM-8:30 PM Whether she is rocking the stage at some of San Francisco’s longest-running and most popular events or entertaining crowds at the legendary Great American Music Hall, guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter Groovy Judy has become one of the Bay Area’s most recognizable musicians. Inspired by the likes of Jimi Hendrix and The Beatles, Groovy Judy’s classic riffs and warm personality have endeared her to fans everywhere.

BOB KINNEY AND THE LIVIN DAYLITES - FRIDAY OCT. 7 - 9: 00 PM- 11: PM Bob Kinney's unique style, that draws from rock, country, blues and funk influences earned him many lead guitar positions including ; Little Anthony and the Imperials, Magic Slim and the Teardrops, The Scott Joss Band (fiddle player with Dwight Yoakum and Merle Haggard) Eddie Money, the band No Secrets, (with members from Sammy Hagar, Pablo Cruise, and Copperhead) The Drifters, April and the Texas Rangers ( Bob won a Sammy for that one), Rachel Steel and Road 88 (another Sammy winner), country rockers Flat Busted to name a few.

"Just a Lil' D.A.B. will Do Ya!"

STRANGE BREW - SAT. OCT. 8 - 4:30 PM-7:PM Strange Brew is a five piece power house that delivers a great live music experience with every show. Formed in 1997, this band throws down a compelling combination of music genres. With a wide variety of syncopated funk, Smooth R&B, hook filled pop, hard and heavy rock beats and stylized rhythmic hip hop, they’ve dazzled party goers in the Northern California East Bay for the past 20 years. Their substance, style and spirit keeps the crowd pumped and energetic from beginning to end. Contemporary or classic, soft or heavy, Strange Brew does it all and they will leave you wanting more!

BRIEFCASE BLUES BROTHERS-SAT. OCT. 8 - 7:45 PM-11:PM BRIEFCASE BLUES has been the ONLY tribute to "Jake and Elwood" that has been in existence since 1983. A full-on show that interacts with the audience has been the "stock-in-trade" for Briefcase Blues here in the U.S. as well as overseas – performing the same great music for which the original "Blues Brothers" band was known. Backed by a dedicated 8-piece band with horn section, BRIEFCASE BLUES consistently delivers a powerful, high-energy, knockout show for audiences of all types - true to the original act. ANGELA STREET BAND - SUNDAY - OCT. 9 - 3:30 PM-5:00 PM Introducing an East Bay Area favorite all girls band... the Angela Street Band! The band consists of both retired and career women, some seasoned musicians and some learned an instrument just to be in an all girls band, LOL! and the drummer Kelli lives here in Rio VIsta! Type of music is upbeat and fun, light rock, pop, country, Americana, and folk along with some great dancing tunes! Angela Street isn’t your typical “rock cover tune band”, but for sure you’ll enjoy groovin’ to songs we all know from the 60’s to the 2000’s! We are certain you’ll enjoy their show!

Indie/Pop Artist, Michelle Lambert is a Northern California Native, her voice is strong and passionate when she's not spitting rapid fire lyrics like her new single, “My California” The electro-acoustic violin is her axe and it hits you like she's shredding an electric guitar. Her influences are Amy Winehouse,Ed Sheeran and Adele. Her partner, Robbie, brings it on the acoustic guitar with driving rhythms, tight arrangements and percussion hits which give a huge sound on stage.

The original Afterglow Band came together in the mid 60’s and released their first album in 1968. Now this trio performs at a variety of venues in the Delta and beyond. Together they will bring you some great hits from the 60’s & 70’s, with vocal harmony that will bring back some good memories ofthe past and make you want to get up and dance!

Rio Vista Chamber of Commerce 33 North Second Street Rio Vista, CA 94571 707-374-2700

Gene Resler-Lead Vocals/Guitar, and Ron George-Vocals/Bass, are the original members. Stefan Barboza-Keyboards/ Vocals joined in the mid 80’s.

All Entertainment is in the pole barn on Front St.

cores of Marin County fishermen have voiced plans to participate in the revival of the Rio Vista Bass Derby, April 7 and 8. The fishing festival, known as the “Gold Cup” Derby, formerly one of Northern California’s most noted events, is being renewed this year on a communitywide basis, with a program which will include not only the quest for striped bass but also a parade, square dancing, a pancake breakfast, a carnival and other features. The angler bringing in the biggest bass will be rewarded not only with a large gold trophy but also with a six horsepower outboard motor. A $l5O skin diving outfit and a $75 tackle box and set will be among the scores of other .awards awaiting successful fishermen in various classes. There will be no fee for entering the Derby, but anglers must register to be eligible for the prizes. Anyone may sign up in Rio Vista itself or at any of 14 nearby resorts, where tickets also are on sale for “gate prizes,” including a $725 color television set. The forecast is for excellent fishing conditions. A number of fishermen from this area are frequent visitors to the Sacramento River and the sloughs near Rio Vista.

A fish, weighing up to 24 pounds, has been caught every day for the past week within the restricted fishing area. The spot right now seems to be just above Three Mile Slough, but with the bass coming in as they are, there is no telling where the “whoppers” will be hooked next Sunday. contest which will be held in Rio Vista on September 27. By way of entertainment for the thousands of visitors expected to attend this civic event, a miniature Mardi Gras festival will be held Saturday evening, September 26. There will be an illuminated parade led by the band of Sacramento Pyramid, followed by their uniformed drill team and featuring the parade of the mermaids, a bevy of comely girls representing the civic organizations of cities surrounding the capital of the California Netherlands. There will be a spectacular display of fireworks from a barge in the river. Following the fireworks the mermaids will be taken to the Fishermen’s Ball in the Legion -Memorial Building (and to which all are invited to come dressed as fishermen) and there one of the girls will be chosen to rule as queen of the Fourth Annual and Original Striped Bass Derby and presented with a beautiful wrist watch. There will be more than fifty mermaids in this event. For the hunter and archery fans there will be a registered skeet shoot and archery tournament throughout Saturday and Sunday. There will be vaudeville entertainment at the official headquarters on both days.

old on to your fishing poles, the Rio Vista Bass Derby is ready for it’s 74th year. This Rio Vista tradition is an integral part of Rio Vista history and the Rio Vista Bass Derby & Festival. Way back in the beginning of the derby, the stories passed down through history are that over 10,000 people attended the derby! The days of 10,000 people fishing the derby are long gone and probably for a good reason, but we have had well over 20,000 people attend our Festival over the 3 days and 400-1000 derby par-

ticipants. The derby runs for 3 days, starting on Oct 7 at 6:00 am to Oct 9 at 3:00 pm. Contestants fish for striped bass, salmon & sturgeon from Sacramento to the Bay on the Sacramento River. The California Striped Bass Association- Isleton Chapter is the official Weigh Master of the derby and will run the weigh station each day. The weigh station will be located at 1 Main Street, next to Rio Vista City Hall and the city dock. This area is easily accessible City of Rio Vista Boat Launch. The

The great prize money is back! We plan to have at least 15 places for the striper category with the big money prizes for the first 3 winners. Striped Bass: 1st place winner is $3000.00, 2nd place - $1500, 3rd Place $1000 plus an additional 12 places of fish gear and other great prizes. White Sturgeon: 1st place winner - $1000.00, 2nd place $500, 3rd Place- $200. Salmon: 1st place winner - $1000.00, 2nd place $500, 3rd Place - $200. The adult derby sponsors this year are Rio Vista Farms and Sportsman’s Warehouse. Each angler in the derby must be 16 years or older and have purchased an official 2022 Rio Vista Bass Derby ticket by 5:30 am on Friday, October 7, 2022. Tickets are $50 per angler contestant and the first 300 ticket holders are eligible to receive a derby hat. We take our rules & regulations seriously! Our weigh station is run by the CSBA who carefully follow the rules to weigh and measure the fish to determine their placement in the derby. The weigh station is equipped with a precision laser scale for length and a certified calibrated weigh scale. Contestants will need to 1) Have an official valid Rio Vista Bass Derby ticket; 2) Be the fisherman that caught the fish; 3) Officially turn their fish in to the weigh station in person;. 4) Have a valid government picture ID. Cheating will not be tolerated.

Look what I caught

The Kids Striper & Catfish Derby also runs at the same time. The kids derby is sponsored by the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) with additional prizes donated by Waldie & Associates Real Estate and The CSBA Isleton Chapter.

Kids derby tickets are $10. The 1st- 25 ticket holders will receive an official Rio Vista Bass Derby kids hat. Each angler must be 15 years of age or younger and can weighin striped bass or catfish. The striped bass must be a minimum legal size of 18” and not over 24”. Winning fish to be closest to 24”. Catfish can be any size with the top weight & length being the winner. All other Rio Vista Derby rules and regulations apply. All entries must be caught by the child angler. Adults may not catch the entry and have a child turn it in. Prizes will be a $50 gift certificate for the 1st place winners in each of the two categories (striped bass and catfish) and we are planning for up to 15 or more placements. Some of the rules have changed over the years. For instance, we accept fish caught from Sacramento to the Bay in the Sacramento River. This rule was changed from fishing in the Rio Vista area only so that the one specific area of the river is not completely fished out. Contestants can bank fish or fish from a boat. Fish must be caught out of the river after the start of the derby on Oct 7th at 6:00 am

We hope to announce more placements for salmon and sturgeon as they become available in the next month. If you wish to donate, call Stacia Olson at (916) 716-4997 for more info. Visit to purchase derby tickets, view the 2022 Official Bass Derby Rules & Regulations, and find a list of bait shops selling tickets. Tickets are also available for purchase in person at the Rio Vista Visitor Center at 33 N. Second St, Rio Vista, and various local bait shops within a 100-mile radius. Tickets will not be sold past the Oct 7 @ 5:30 am deadline. If you wish to donate prizes, call Stacia Olson at (916) 716-4997 for
