Striped Bass, Sturgeon, and Salmon are presented to the Official Weigh Station at the foot of Main St. for weighing and mea suring by the Weigh Masters, The California Striped Bass Associa tion Isleton Chapter. During last October’s derby, he drove through the Hu man Bean drive-thru to get a coffee. The worker asked him, “what are you doing up so early?” He replied, “It’s the Bass Derby time, every one in town knows that and I’m fishing the derby.” When she handed him his coffee she had written on the cup, “You’re a Winner!” She was right, he won first place with his 3rd catch that day.

Besides fishing, the other passion that Carlton has is inspiring young people and getting to know his neighbors. For about 7 years he and his wife would give away toys on Halloween. He really wanted to show his appreciation to his fellow neighbors, so he would go to Walmart with a 5 x 12 trailer and load it up with bikes and all kinds of toys. Each child that came to the door would receive a raffle ticket. One year he had over 800 tickets given out.

Carlton King has the perfect last name as far as fishing goes and the good he has done in the Carltoncommunity.has been a Rio Vista resident for 22 years and a Bass Derby participant each of those years. As a child growing up in the Bay Area, his Mom loved to come to Rio Vista to enjoy the beauty of the water and let Carlton and his brothers fish. In 1996, he started working for a com pany that did tile work in Rio Vista. A few years later he made his way around work ing in the Bay Area and one of his co-workers mentioned that he should look into buy ing a home here. Carlton didn’t think that would be possible, but sure enough, he and his wife Adah stopped by the sales office. There were two houses left and they fell in love with one of them. Within a few days they be came residents of a city that he loved as a child.

He has used his knowledge to win first place in the Bass Derby in the striper category in 2018 and 2021 and sec ond place in 2019. Anglers may fish from San Francisco Bay to Sacramento. All fish must be weighed in at the Official Weigh Station at 1 Main Street, in Rio Vista. Check the weigh in times below in paragraph #9!!!

The Striped Bass must be a minimum legal size of 18” and not over 24”. Winning fish to be closest to 24”. Catfish can be any size, fish with the top weight & length will be the winner. All other Rio Vista Derby rules and regulations apply. All en tries must be caught by the child angler. Adults may not catch the entry and have a child turn it in.

All fish entered in the Bass Derby must be mea sured and weighed in at the Official Weigh-In Station, lo cated at 1 Main Street in Rio Vista. The California Striped Bass Association Isleton Delta Chapter is the official Weigh Master of the 2022 Rio Vista Bass Derby. Each angler must pres ent his or her own fish for measurement and weigh-in. The angler will provide the Weigh Master with informa tion as to when and where the fish was caught. All anglers must present their numbered Derby ticket along with their Fishing license and Sturgeon Report Card (if applicable) and a Gov ernment Issued Photo ID at the time of the weigh-in.

All sturgeon anglers must have a sturgeon report card and all sturgeon must be tagged at the time of the catch and brought to the Weigh-In Station with tag attached.

Each angler may submit only one fish per cat egory in the derby. Tickets will be marked accordingly, and all fish will be marked for identification purposes.

Dedicated Bait Shop & Other Locations: Select Bait Shops will be selling tickets until Thursday, Oct 6 at their close of business. See www.bassfestival.com for locations. Tickets at these locations may not be avail able until 6 weeks before the event. Cut off at these locations is close of busi ness Thursday, Oct 6th.

The committee in charge of the Fourth Annual and Original Striped Bass Derby is preparing for a record breaking crowd of anglers at the forthcoming contest which will be held in Rio Vista on Septem ber 27. By way of entertainment for the thousands of visitors expected to attend this civic event, a miniature Mardi Gras festival will be held Saturday evening, September 26. There will be an illuminated parade led by the band of Sacramento Pyramid, followed by their uniformed drill team and featuring the parade of the mermaids, a bevy of comely girls representing the civic organizations of cities surrounding the capital of the California Netherlands. There will be a spectacular display of fireworks from a barge in the river. Following the fireworks the mermaids will be taken to the Fishermen’s Ball in the Legion -Memorial Building (and to which all are invited to come dressed as fishermen) and there one of the girls will be chosen to rule as queen of the Fourth Annual and Original Striped Bass Derby and presented with a beautiful wrist watch. There will be more than fifty mermaids in this event. For the hunter and archery fans there will be a registered skeet shoot and archery tournament throughout Saturday and Sunday. There will be vaudeville entertainment at the official headquarters on both days.

Scores of Marin County fishermen have voiced plans to participate in the revival of the Rio Vista Bass Derby, April 7 and 8. The fishing festival, known as the “Gold Cup” Derby, formerly one of Northern California’s most noted events, is being renewed this year on a communitywide basis, with a program which will include not only the quest for striped bass but also a parade, square dancing, a pancake breakfast, a carnival and other features. The an gler bringing in the biggest bass will be rewarded not only with a large gold trophy but also with a six horsepower out board motor. A $l5O skin diving outfit and a $75 tackle box and set will be among the scores of other .awards await ing successful fishermen in various classes. There will be no fee for entering the Derby, but anglers must register to be eligible for the prizes. Anyone may sign up in Rio Vista itself or at any of 14 nearby resorts, where tickets also are on sale for “gate prizes,” including a $725 color television set. Thousands of fishermen who will take part in Rio Vista Fifth Annual Striped Bass Derby on Sunday, Oct.- 10, in the derby waters which are comprised of the Sacramento river from Three Mile Slough to Sycamore Park and Steamboat Slough from its confluence with the Sacramento to a point approximately one-half mile above Wager’s Resort. A fish, weighing up to 24 pounds, has been caught every day for the past week within the restricted fishing area. The spot right now seems to be just above Three Mile Slough, but with the bass coming in as they are, there is no telling where the “whoppers” will be hooked next Sunday. The fishing will start at 8:30 a. m. and contin ue until 3 p.m. What is necessary to enter the contest? Which Is the biggest fishing event held in California, is to have an angling license and procure a fishing card at Derby head quarters in Rio Vista, which will be open day and night until the derby is over.

Some of the rules have changed over the years. For instance, we accept fish caught from Sacra mento to the Bay in the Sacramento River. This rule was changed from fishing in the Rio Vista area only so that the one specific area of the river is not completely fished out. Contestants can bank fish or fish from a boat. Fish must be caught out of the river after the start of the derby on Oct 7th at 6:00

Kids derby tickets are $10. The 1st- 25 ticket hold ers will receive an official Rio Vista Bass Derby kids hat. Each angler must be 15 years of age or younger and can weighin striped bass or catfish. The striped bass must be a minimum legal size of 18” and not over 24”. Winning fish to be closest to 24”. Catfish can be any size with the top weight & length being the winner. All other Rio Vista Derby rules and regulations ap ply. All entries must be caught by the child angler. Adults may not catch the entry and have a child turn it in. Prizes will be a $50 gift certificate for the 1st place winners in each of the two categories (striped bass and catfish) and we are planning for up to 15 or more placements.
