emos o privilégio de conviver com uma diversidade biológica imensa, que atrai admiradores da natureza do mundo inteiro.

Vivemos no que restou da Mata Atlântica Brasileira, que mesmo dividindo espaço com os centros urbanos, ficou conhecida como um hotspot - área prioritária para conservação, rica em biodiversidade e ameaçada.

Quando o Brasil foi descoberto, a Mata Atlântica ocupava quase todo o litoral do país, além de algumas áreas interiores. Hoje, resta cerca de 17% que, mesmo reduzida, tem a maior biodiversidade e o maior grau de endemismo conhecido.

Santa Catarina era coberta originalmente pelas formações do Domínio da Mata Atlântica - Floresta Ombrófila Densa, Mista, Estacional Decidual e Campos de Altitude.

Atualmente, o estado apresenta remanescentes em cerca de 31% de seu território, situando-se, mesmo assim, como um dos estados com maior área desse bioma.

Proporcionalmente, o território da Bacia do Itajaí tem a maior cobertura florestal do estado.

A

Reserva Rio das Furnas é a primeira Reserva Particular de Alfredo Wagner, Capital Catarinense das Nascentes.

Além de abrigar as nascentes do rio Itajaí do Sul, é dos divisores de água que circundam o território do município que partem os rios Canoas, Tijucas e Tubarão.

Seu relevo é dominado pela Serra Geral, Serra dos Faxinais e Serra da Boa Vista, onde nasce o Rio das Furnas, a 1200m de altitude.

No canyon do Rio das Furnas está a Reserva com suas sete cachoeiras e um sítio arqueológico formado por uma gruta e quatro abrigos sob rocha, provavelmente utilizados pelos Xokleng, índios nômades, coletores e caçadores.

das Aves

A

América do Sul é o continente das aves, com cerca de 2.700 espécies residentes. Se considerarmos as visitantes, o total chega a quase 3.000, praticamente um terço das aves de todo o globo, o que não é igualado por qualquer outra região do planeta.

O Brasil possui cerca de 1.800 espécies, mais da metade das aves deste continente.

Esta abundância, no Brasil, torna-se impressionante se comparada com os mamíferos, uma proporção de um para seis.

Em Santa Catarina existem cerca de 650 espécies registradas e na Reserva foram identificadas 170. Biólogos que visitaram a Reser va estimaram a existência de pelo menos o dobro. Um fator para esta grande variedade seria a transição entre a Floresta Ombrófila Densa e Mista (Floresta de Araucária), presente no seu canyon.

Com esta previsão confirmada, os pequenos 28 hectares da Reserva Rio das Furnas abrigariam a metade das espécies de aves encontradas em todo o Estado!

ma espécie, em geral, não sobrevive isolada do ecossistema em que se insere. Depende de toda a diversidade vegetal e animal, entre outros fatores daquele lugar. Todos fazem parte de cadeias alimentares e reprodutivas.

O desaparecimento de uma única espécie pode interromper uma cadeia e determinar o desaparecimento de muitas outras - é assim com alguns pássaros que polinizam as plantas e que, por sua vez, dependem dos frutos ou dos insetos de que se alimentam, como é assim com quase tudo o que existe na natureza.

The Brazilian

e have the privilege of living with an immense biological diversity that attracts nature lovers from all over the world. We live in what still remains of the Brazilian Atlantic Rain Forest that even dividing space with urban centers is still a hotspot – a priority conservation area rich in biodiversity and threatened.

When Brazil was discovered, the Atlantic Forest occupied nearly all of the coastal area of the country, as well as some interior areas.

Today, about 17% of this forest remains, which even in its reduced condition has the greatest biodiversity and the highest degree of endemism known.

Originally, the entire territory of Santa Catarina state was covered by the formations of the Atlantic Rain Forest Dominion (Dense Ombrophilous Forest, Mixed Ombrophilous Forest, Seasonal Deciduous Forest and High Plains).

Currently, the state presents fragments of these formations in about 31% of its territory, thus placing it as one the states with the largest area of this biome.

Proportionally, the territory of the ItajaĂ­ Basin has the greatest forest cover in the state.

he Rio das Furnas Reserve is the first Private Reserve of Alfredo Wagner municipality, the State Capital of Water Springs.

Besides encompassing the springs of the Itajai do Sul River, it is from the water divisors that surround the territory of the municipality that also gives rise to the Canoas, Tijucas and Tubar達o rivers. Its topography is dominated by the

Serra Geral, Serra dos Faxinais and the Serra da Boa Vista, the last being the source of the Furnas River, at a height of 1,200 meters.

The canyon of the Furnas River is the site of the Reserve, with its seven waterfalls and an archeological site, formed by a grotto and four rock shelters, probably used by the Xokleng, nomadic, hunter-gatherer Indians.

outh America is the continent of birds, with about 2,700 resident species. If we consider migrant species, the total is almost 3,000, practically one third of living birds on the planet, an amount unequalled anywhere else in the world.

Brazil contains about 1,800 bird species, more than half of the birds on the continent. The abundance of birds in Brazil becomes impressing if compared with the mammals with a proportion of one to six.

In Santa Catarina state exists approximately 650 registered species of birds and in the Reserve, about 170 species have been identified. The biologists who have visited the Reserve estimated that at least twice the number of species exists. One factor that contributed to this great variety would be the transition between Dense Ombrophilous Forest and Mixed Ombrophilous Forest (Forest with Araucaria, or Brazilian Pine) present in the canyon of the Reserve. With this prediction confirmed, the little 28 hectares of the Rio das Furnas Reserve hosts half the bird species found in the entire state of Santa Catarina!

n general, a species does not sur vive isolated within the ecosystem in which it exists.

Everything depends on plant and animal diversity, along with the other local conditions. All species are part of food and reproductive chains.

The disappearance of a single species can break a chain and determine the disappearance of many others – this is how it is with some birds that pollinate plants and, in return, depend on its fruits or on insects for food.

seguir você tem uma coleção de aves fotografadas no canyon da Reserva Rio das Furnas. Algumas podem ser encontradas pelo Brasil afora e outras vivem exclusivamente no Sul e Sudeste do país.

Os nomes e a pequena descrição foram obtidos de pesquisas bibliográficas, consulta a especialistas e observação pessoal.

A ordem taxonômica segue Helmut Sick (2001), com as alterações propostas em 2006 pelo Comitê Brasileiro de Registros Ornitológicos (CBRO).

he following is a collection of birds that were photographed in the canyon of the Rio das Furnas Reserve. Some can be found throughout Brazil and others only in the South and Southeast of the country.

The names and short descriptions were obtained by means of bibliographical research, consults with specialists and personal observations.

The taxonomical order follows Helmut Sick (2001), with alterations proposed by the Brazilian Committee on Ornithological Registry (CBRO) in 2006.

An updated list, with all the birds identified in the Reserve, is available at www.riodasfurnas.org.br.

Accipitridae Harpagus diodon Gavião-bombachinha 33cm. Possui calção com castanho uniforme. Assobio rítmico quando voa acima da floresta. Come grandes insetos; às vezes associa-se às formigas-de-correição.

Habita florestas não muito densas.

Accipitridae Rupornis magnirostris Gavião-carijó 36cm. Ave abundante no Brasil.

Chama a atenção por circular em casais; interrompe o planar com batidas rápidas, vocalizando. Caça grandes insetos, pequenas aves, lagartixas e cobras.

Falconidae Milvago chimachima Carrapateiro 40cm. Envergadura 74cm.

O mais conhecido gavião do país. Reconhecível pela voz aguda “piiinhé”. Comum em áreas abertas, associado à pecuária. Procura animais mortos em estradas e praias.

Come lagartas, detritos e frutas; pesca e caça cupins.

Cracidae Penelope obscura Jacuaçu 73cm, 1.200g. Verde-bronze bem escuro. Grito alto e rouco, fortíssimo “tossir” ou “latir”; rufar das asas. Habita floresta alta.

Come frutos, folhas e brotos. “Jacu” (Tupi) significa: o que come grãos.

Rallidae Aramides saracura Saracura-do-mato 34cm. Endêmica. Levanta a cauda, nervosa. Voz forte e dura. Habita alagados orlados de floresta, terrenos acidentados florestados; atravessa longos trechos desprovidos de água.

Rufous-thighed Kite 33cm. Thighs rufous.

It has a rhythmic whistle when flying over the forest. It eats large insects; sometimes associated with army ants.

It inhabits open forests.

Barred Forest-falcon 36cm. A very frequent bird in Brazil. It calls attention by flying in couples; it ceases the gliding with fast flaps and hollering. It hunts large insects, small birds, geckos and snakes.

Yellow-headed Caracara 40cm. 74cm wingspan. The most known hawk of the country.

Easily recognized by acute voice like a “peawea”. Common in open areas associated with cattle raising. It searches for carcasses along the roads and beaches. It eats caterpillars, organic remains, and fruits; it fishes and hunts termites.

Dusky-legged Guan 73cm, 1,200g. Green-bronze.

Loud and raucous hollering, very strong “cough” or “bark”; frill of the wings. It inhabits high forest. It eats fruits, leaves, and sprouts. “Jacu” (Tupi indigenous name) means: the one that eats grains.

Slaty-breasted Wood-rail 34cm. Endemic.

It raises it tails nervously.

Strong and heavy voice.

It inhabits swamps surrounded by forests and hilly grounds; it flies long waterless areas.

Columbidae Columbina talpacoti Rolinha 17cm. Bem conhecida. Macho de cabeça cinza-clara. Canto territorial. Voa bem, habita qualquer paisagem aberta. Bem adaptada em viver na cidade.

Alimenta-se basicamente de grãos.

Psittacidae Pyrrhura frontalis Tiriva 27cm. No Sudeste do Brasil é o periquito florestal mais comum.

Cauda comprida com a face inferior avermelhada. Quase sempre em barulhentos bandos.

Vive na orla da floresta e pomares.

Alimenta-se de frutos e sementes.

Cuculidae Piaya cayana Picuã, Alma-de-gato 47cm. Ave das mais vistosas.

Voz: forte “pí-qua”; tagarela, imita outras aves. Ranger duríssimo “rrr”.

Vive na beira e nas copas da floresta, às vezes em casal. Alimenta-se basicamente de insetos e lagartas que encontra vasculhando as copas das árvores.

Apodidae Cypseloides senex Andorinhão-velho-da-cascata 18cm. Vive em grandes grupos, associados a quedas d´água. Durante o dia caça voando alto sobre a floresta alimentando-se de insetos. Pousa em superfícies verticais e ásperas, apoiada sobre uma calosidade do pé e da cauda rígida.

Trochilidae Stephanoxis lalandi Beija-flor-de-topete 8,5cm. Espécie brasileira de topete mais longo. Típica de áreas altas e frias. Voz fina como inseto, reúne-se em grupos para cantar. Alimenta-se de néctar e pequenos insetos.

Ruddy Ground-dove 17cm. Well known.

Male with light grey head.

Territorial singing.

Good flyer lives in any half opened landscape.

Well adapted in cities’ environments.

It basically eats grains.

Reddish-bellied Parakeet 27cm. In the southeast of Brasil, it is the most common forest parrakeet. Long tailed with the inferior side reddish.

Usually in noisy flocks.

It lives in the edge of the forest and orchard. Frugivorous.

Squirrel Cuckoo 47cm. Very showy bird.

Voice: strong “pee-kwa”; cackler, imitates other birds.

Strong creak “rrr”. It lives on the edge and in the canopy of the forests, sometimes in couples. It basically eats insects and caterpillars which it finds wandering through the forest canopy.

Great Dusky Swift 18cm. It lives in very large groups in the waterfalls. During the day hunts flying high over the forest eating insects.

It settles on vertical and rugged surfaces leaning on a foot callosity and a rigid tail.

Black-breasted Plovercrest 8.5cm. The Brazilian species with the longest topknot.

Typical of cold and high places. Fine voice like an insect; it gathers in groups to sing. It feeds on nectar and small insects.

Trochilidae Leucochloris albicollis Papo-branco 10,5cm. De porte robusto, inconfundível pela garganta branca.

Entra em estado de torpor, como outros beija-flores, se houver queda de temperatura. Territorial. Alimenta-se de néctar e pequenos insetos.

Trochilidae Calliphlox amethystina Estrelinha 8,5cm (m) - 7,5cm (f). Uma das menores espécies (2,5 g).

Chama a atenção pelo estranho zumbido que produz. Mestre em vôos ascendentes e a ré.

Freqüente na copa em borda de floresta e quintais.

Trogonidae Trogon rufus Surucuá-de-barriga-amarela 26cm. Muito mansa, vive sob o dossel da floresta densa, não raro nas montanhas do Sudeste, ao lado de Trogon surrucura. Alimenta-se basicamente de frutos quando adulta sendo uma excelente dispersora de sementes.

Trogonidae Trogon surrucura Surucuá-de-peito-azul 26cm. Belíssima espécie. Hábitos semelhantes ao Trogon rufus. Ainda mais mansa. Frugívora especializada, excelente dispersora de sementes.

Ramphastidae Ramphastos dicolorus Tucano-de-bico-verde 48cm. Voz nasal e seca.

Basicamente frugívora, embora alimente o filhote com uma dieta mais protéica. Dispersora primária de espécies vegetais com grandes sementes.

White-throated Hummingbird 10.5cm. Stocky size, characterized by its white throat. It falls asleep, like other hummingbirds, in case of temperature dropping. Territorial. It feeds on nectar and small insects.

Amethyst Woodstar 8.5cm (m) – 7.5cm (f). One of the smallest species (2.5g).

It calls attention by its strange humming. It is a master in ascendant and rear flying. Commom in the canopy and forest edge, as well as backyards.

Black-throated Trogon 26cm. Tamed, it lives under the canopy of dense forest, common in mountain of southeast Brazilian Region, together with Trogon surrucura.

When adult, basically feeds on fruits, becoming an excellent seed spreader.

Surucua Trogon 26cm. This is a stunning species. Similar behaviour to Trogon rufus.

Even more tamed.

Specialiazed frugivorous, excellent seed spreader.

Red-breasted Toucan 48cm. Nasal and dry voice. Basically frugivorous, though it feeds the nestling with a more proteic diet.

Primary dispersor of plant species with large seeds.

Picidae Picumnus temminckii Pica-pau-anão-de-coleira 9cm. Voz fina. Faz ninho em cavidades de árvore. Vive na borda de floresta, capoeiras e jardins, a tamborilar nos galhos secos a procura de artrópodes.

Picidae Piculus aurulentus Pica-pau-dourado 20cm. Habita a floresta no alto das serras. Voz: seqüência plangente e descendente “iü; iü, iü”. Faz ninho em cavidades de árvore.

Picidae Veniliornis spilogaster Pica-pauzinho-verde-carijó 17,5cm. É o maior de um grupo de pica-pauzinhos esverdeados.

Habita o estrato médio da floresta.

Picidae Dryocopus lineatus Pica-pau-de-banda-branca 33cm. Uma das maiores espécies.

Arisca, territorial. Produz um tamborilar forte e prolongado. Alimenta-se de insetos e larvas.

Formicariidae Mackenziaena leachii Feiticeira, Borralhara-assobiadora 26,5cm. Cauda longa. Seqüência prolongada, ascendente e descendente de assobios destacados. Habita florestas densas com taquaras (Chusquea). Come artrópodes, escorpiões, lagartas, ratinhos, etc.

Ochre-collared Piculet 9cm. Fine voice. Nests in tree holes. It lives in forest edge, pioneer forests, and backyards, pecking in dry branches searching for arthropods.

White-browed Woodpecker 20cm. Inhabit the high mountain forests.

Voice: a sad descendent sequence “yu, yu, yu”.

It nests in tree holes.

White-spotted Woodpecker 17.5cm. It it the largest group of small greenish Woodpecker.

Inhabit the under-storey of the forest.

Lineated Woodpecker 33cm. One the largest species. Skittish, territorial.

It makes a long strong pecking sound. It feeds on insects and worms.

Large-tailed Antshrike 26.5cm. Long tailed. It makes a long ascendant and descendant sequence of whiltles. Inhabit dense forests with bamboos (Chusquea). It eats arthopods, scorpions, catterpilars, mice, etc.

Thamnophilidae Thamnophilus caerulescens Choca-da-mata 15cm. Voz melodiosa. Habita a orla da floresta e capoeira alta e densa, brenhas de taquara, etc. Baixa lentamente a cauda.

Muito curiosa. Insetívora.

Conopophagidae Conopophaga lineata Chupa-dente 11cm. Típica das regiões montanhosas.

Vive à beira da floresta em vegetação espessa próxima ao solo. Gosta de ambientes com taquaras. Rêmiges sonoras (música instrumental).

Insetívora.

Grallariidae Hylopezus nattereri Pinto-do-mato 12,5cm. Extremamente pernilonga.

Voz: seqüência de 8 a 12 assobios suaves. Vive a pouca altura nos taquarais emaranhados. Oscila o corpo lateralmente. Insetívora.

Rhinocryptidae Merulaxis ater Entufado 17cm. Pula ou corre tanto no solo como na ramaria, a pouca altura.

Gosta de ambientes sombrios, vive nas brenhas de floresta virgem alta ou secundária. Dorme empoleirada. Insetívora.

Dendrocolaptidae Sittasomus griseicapillus Arapaçu-verde 15cm. Uma das espécies mais freqüentes, inconfundível pelo seu aspecto delgado. Usa a cauda como apoio. Na asa aberta nota-se uma faixa ferrugínea muito vistosa.

Voz: seqüência de assobios claros, “quip...”, prolongada. Vive na floresta.

Variable Antshrike 15 cm. Melodious voice.

Inhabits the forest edge and also high and dense pioneer forest, very thick vegetation dominated by bamboos, etc. It slowly downwards the tail. Very curious. Insectivorous.

Rufous Gnateater 11cm. Typical of mountain regions. It lives on the edge of the forest in thick vegetation near the ground.

It likes places dominated by bamboos. Sounding rowing (instrumental music). Insetivorous.

Speckle-breasted Antpitta 12.5cm. A wanding bird.

Voice: a sequence of 8 to 12 soft whistles. It lives near the ground in very thick bamboo vegetation. It moves the body sideways. Insetivorous.

Slaty Bristlefront 17cm. It hops or runs both on the ground or on the bushes at low height. It likes shadowy places, lives on very dense parts of the primary high or secondary forest. It sleeps perched. Insetivorous.

Olivaceous Woodcreeper 15cm. One of the most common species, recognizable by its thin body. It uses the tail as body support. When with its wings opened a very showy ferrugineous stripe can be seen. Voice: a sequence of clear prolonged whistles, “kiiiiip..”. It lives in the forest.

Dendrocolaptidae Dendrocolaptes platyrostris Arapaçu-grande 26cm. Bico relativamente curto, negro com ponta marrom e quase reto, que como outros arapaçus, utiliza como pinça. Arborícola e insetívora.

Necessita de floresta primária. Nidifica em cavidades de árvores.

Dendrocolaptidae Lepidocolaptes falcinellus Arapaçu-escamado 20cm. Abundante em florestas neotropicais. Ponta da cauda endurecida e encurvada para dentro. Voz, chamado “spirl”; uma risada clara, apressada e forte.

Furnariidae Synallaxis ruficapilla Pichororé 16cm. Seu ninho é um amontoado denso e comprido de gravetos espinhosos, com acesso superior, quase sempre forrado com material fofo ou flexível. Habita brenhas, orla e floresta fechada. Alimenta-se de insetos e larvas, na ramaria baixa, às vezes pulando no solo.

Furnariidae Synallaxis spixi João-teneném, Bentererê 16cm. Exclusivamente neotropical.

Onomatopéica. Alimenta-se na ramaria mais baixa, às vezes no solo. Vive escondida em arbustos, beira da floresta. Ninho e hábitos idênticos ao Synallaxis ruficapilla.

Furnariidae Lochmias nematura João-porca, Tiriri 14cm. Vive à beira d´água corrente. Inconfundível, apesar de seu habitat sombrio. Olhos grandes, inquieto. Canto: “sísísí”.

Nidifica em barrancos. Insetívora.

Planalto Woodcreeper 26cm. Relatively short bill, black with brown tip and almost straight, as others Arapaçus, uses as a tweezers.

Arboricole and insectivorous.

It needs primary forests. It nests in tree cavities.

Scalloped Woodcreeper 20cm. Very common in Neotropical forests.

Hard tail tip and curved inwards.

Voice, “spearl” calling; a clear, fast and strong laughter.

Ruffous-capped Spinetail 16cm. Its nest is a dense and long mount of spiny bushes, with a superior access, usually covered with soft or flexible material. Inhabits very dense vegetation, as well as the edge and the closed forest.

It feeds on insects and worms, in the low bushes, sometimes hopping on the ground.

Chicli Spinetail 16cm. Exclusively Neotropical. Onomatopoeic. It feeds on low bushes, sometimes on the ground. It lives hiding in the shrubs on the forest edge. Nest and behaviours identical to the Synallaxis ruficapilla.

Sharp-tailed Streamcreeper 14cm. It lives by the side of water streams.

Recognizable, despite its shadowy habitat.

Large eyes, restless.

Voice: “sisisi”. Nests on riverside slopes. Insetivorous.

Furnariidae Syndactyla rufosuperciliata Trepador-quiete 17,5cm. Vive no estrato baixo, nos emaranhados de galhos e cipós, nas bordas e florestas. Difícil de ser reconhecida. Insetívora. Seu hábito lembra um Pica-pau (martela) ou Arapaçu.

Furnariidae Xenops rutilans Bico-virado-carijó 12,5cm. Parte inferior estriada de branco e bico virado para cima. É capaz de cavar seu próprio ninho em madeira mole ou utiliza cavidades de pica-paus. Pendura-se em galhos, sobe verticalmente pelos troncos. Habita a floresta.

Tyrannidae Poecilotriccus plumbeiceps Tororó 9cm. Irrequieta, caça insetos sobre as folhas à beira dos córregos e em meio a samambaias e cipoais.

Canto curioso, sonoro e agradável, lembra um sapo ou perereca.

Tyrannidae Platyrinchus mystaceus Patinho 10cm. Papa-moscas silvícola bem pequeno com bico chato; amarelo escondido no píleo.

Habita a pouca altura da floresta alta e escura.

Tyrannidae Pitangus sulphuratus Bentevi 22,5cm. A ave mais popular do Brasil. Onomatopéica, matraqueia “prrr”. Adapta-se a qualquer meio. Onívora, come frutos e dispersa sementes.

Buff-browed Foliage-gleaner 17.5cm. It lives in low Forest strata, tangled branches and lianes in the edge of forests.

Difficult to be recognized.

Insetivorous. Its habits reminds of the Woodpecker or Arapaçu.

Streaked Xenops 12.5cm. Inferior part white striated and the bill overturned upwards. It is capable of digging its own nest in soft wood or uses woodpeckers’ holes.

It perches on branches, climbs vertically through the trunks. It inhabits forests.

Ochre-faced Tody-flycatcher 9cm. Restless, it hunt insects on the leaves by water streams in the middle of ferns and lianas. Curious singing, sonorous and pleasant, it reminds of a frog or a toad.

White-throated Spadebill 10cm. Fly-eater, very small silvicolous with a flat bill, yellow hidden on the top of the head. It inhabits in low heights of the high and dark forest.

Vive nas florestas e copas. Come frutos e insetos tal qual o Bentevi. Espécie migratória no Vale do Itajaí.

Tyrannidae Tyrannus melancholicus Suiriri 21,5cm. Bem conhecida.

Defende seu território com valentia.

Onomatopéica, vocaliza em pontos altos. Insetívora. Espécie migratória no Vale do Itajaí.

Vireonidae Cyclarhis gujanensis Pitiguari 16cm. Cabeçuda, de bico adunco e alto. Voz rouca e muito forte.

Come insetos e lagartas.

Na borda e copa da floresta, fica escondida na densa folhagem em altura média ou alta; evita voar.

Vireonidae Vireo olivaceus Juruviara 14cm. Silvestre, de vasta distribuição. Canta muito na época da procriação. Come insetos e larvas, também frugívora. Vive no estrato médio e copa de floresta.

Espécie migratória no Vale do Itajaí.

Vireonidae Hylophilus poicilotis Verdinho-coroado 12,5cm. Silvícola, geralmente na copa. Captura insetos dependurando-se nas folhas verdes do estrato médio. Também come frutos. Segue bandos mistos.

Streaked Flycatcher 21.5cm. Recognizable by its size and striated drawings. Sings at dusk. It lives in the forests and crowns. It eats fruits and insects the same as the Pitangus sulphuratus. Migratory species in the Itajaí Valley.

Tropical Kingbird 21.5cm. Well-known. It defends its territory with bravery. Onomatopoeic, vocalizes at high points.

Insectivorous.

Migratory species in the Itajaí Valley.

Rufous-browed Peppershrike 16cm. Big-headed, high and curved bill. Husky, very strong voice. It eats insects and caterpillar. It lives on the edge and canopy of the forest, it hides in the dense foliage in medium or high heights, avoids flying.

Chivi Vireo 14cm. Sylvestral, of vast distribution. It sings alot during the mating season. It eats insects and worms, also frugivorous. It lives in the mid and high Forest strata. Migratory species in the Itajaí Valley.

Rufous-crowned Greenlet 12.5cm. Silvicolous, it lives usually in the canopy.

It captures insects it hangs on the green leaves of the understory. It also eats fruits.

It follows mixed-species flocks.

Corvidae Cyanocorax caeruleus Gralha-azul 37cm. Voz esganiçada; avisa. Arborícola.

Na crença popular esconde pinhões para provisão e, esquecendo-os, providencia seu plantio. Parece usar formigas na sua higiene, esfregando-as vivas nas asas por causa do ácido fórmico. Onívora.

Caça em qualquer altura.

Turdidae Platycichla flavipes Sabiá-una 21cm. Canto forte e límpido, rico em motivos, varia amplitude. Habita árvores altas na floresta em montanhas e canyons. Espécie parece ser migratória no Vale do Itajaí. Onívora.

Turdidae Turdus rufiventris Sabiá-laranjeira 25cm. Muito conhecida no Sudeste, inconfundível pela cor laranja na barriga, às vezes de pálpebra amarela. Múltiplos e belos cantos.

Habita a floresta, quintais e cidades arborizadas. Onívora.

Thraupidae Pyrrhocoma ruficeps Cabecinha-castanha 14cm. Ave rara, restrita à região Este-meridional. Vive a pouca altura, nas brenhas fechadas e taquarais. Basicamente frugívora.

Thraupidae Tachyphonus coronatus Tiê-preto 18cm. A mistura da plumagem é própria dos imaturos. Quando o macho bate a asa é possível ver a coloração branca na sua face inferior. Possui canto elaborado. Habita a orla da floresta, capoeira e parques.

Procura frutos, nectar e insetos.

Azure Jay 37cm. Screeching voice, warns.

Arboricolous. In the popular creed, it hides the Brazilian pine (Araucaria angustifolia) seeds for provision, when forgetting them behind, prepares for the planting.

It seems to use ants in its hygiene; it rubs them alive on the wings due to the formic acid.

Yellow-legged Thrush 21cm. Strong singing, clear, rich in theme, varies in amplitude. It inhabits high trees in the mountain forest and canyons. It seems to be a migratory species in the Itajaí valley. Omnivorous.

Rufous-bellied Thrush 25cm. Very well-known in the Southeast of Brazil, distinctive by its orange color on the potbelly, sometimes with yellow eyering. Multiple and beautiful songs. It inhabits the forest, backyards and arboreous cities.

Chestnut-headed Tanager 14cm. Rare bird, restrict to West-meridional Region.

It lives in low heights, in closed brushs and canebrake.

Basically frugivorous.

Ruby-crowned Tanager 18cm. The mixed plumage typical of immatures. When the male flaps its wings, it is possible to see the white coloring in the inferior side. It has a elaborated singing. It inhabits the edge of the forest, pioneer forest, and parks. It forages for fruits, nectar and insects.

Thraupidae Stephanophorus diadematus Sanhaço-frade 19cm. Bico grosso, com topete.

Vive aos casais, na densa floresta baixa e cumes das serras.

Insetívora, também come frutos de Myrsine coriacea (Myrsinaceae).

Thraupidae Pipraeidea melanonota Saíra-viúva 15cm. Brilhante azul-claro no alto da cabeça. Voz: “tzi” lembra Tangara preciosa. Vive aos casais nas copas, freqüenta restinga.

Onívora.

Thraupidae Tangara desmaresti Saíra-lagarta 13,5cm. Endemismo notável do sul do Brasil. Restrita às serras.

Voz aguda. Vive na capoeira e floresta. Frugívora.

Thraupidae Tangara preciosa Saíra-preciosa 14cm. Voz baixa, pio, como um lamento. Habita a vegetação de borda de pinhal.

Frugívora. Parece apresentar movimentos migratórios.

Thraupidae Dacnis cayana Saí-azul 13cm. Larga distribuição.

Seu canto é um assobio agudo, comum quando voa em bandos. Vive na beira da floresta em diversos estratos. De dieta onívora.

Diademed Tanager 19cm. Thick bill, with a topknot. It lives in couples in the dense low forest and mountain peaks.

Insectivorous, it also eats Myrsinaceae fruits.

Fawn-breasted Tanager 15cm. Light-shinny blue on the topo of the head.

Voice “tzee” reminds of Tangara preciosa.

It lives in couples in the tree crowns, visits restinga. Omnivorous

Brassy-breasted Tanager 13.5cm. Endemism notable in the south of Brazil.

Restricted to mountain ranges. Acute voice. It lives in the pioneer forest and forest. Frugivorous.

Emberizidae Poospiza lateralis Quete, Tachinha 15,5cm. Abundante nas serras altas do Sudeste e Sul. Voz fina: “pix”. Habita floresta de altitude e bosque de Araucária, em casais. Granívora.

Emberizidae Sporophila caerulescens Coleirinho, Papa-capim 11cm. Bico de colorido variado: cinzento, amarelado, esverdeado ou anegrado. Belo canto, gorjeado, às vezes canta em vôo.

O ninho é um amontoado de galhinhos frágeis. Habita campos de cultura e capinzais. Granívora.

Parece migrar no inverno.

Cardinalidae Saltator similis Trinca-ferro, Tia-chica 20cm. Muito conhecida e valorizada. Bico forte e cauda avantajada. Fraseado altera conforme a região. Vive na beira de floresta, baixadas e montanhas.

Granívora, também come folhas.

Cardinalidae Saltator maxillosus Bico-grosso, Tia-chica 19,5cm. Bico de cor amarelo na base.

Habita beira de floresta, jardins e altas serras do Sudeste. Granívora, também come folhas e frutas.

Rufous-collared Sparrow 15cm. Popular and appreciated in Brazil. Singing timbre varies according to the region. It has got a special night singing.

It builds nests at low heights. It inhabits open landscapes, fields, backyards, coverings, etc.

Granivorous.

Red-rumped Warbling-finch 15.5cm. Abundant in the high mountains of Southeast and South of Brazil. Voice: fine “pix”. It inhabits the altitude forest and Araucaria woods. Granivorous.

Double-collared Seedeater 11cm. Varied colored bill: greyish, yeloowish, greenish or blackish.

Beautiful singing, quavered, sometimes it sings during the flight. The nest is pile of fragile twiggeries. It inhabits fields and hayfields.

Green-winged Saltator 20cm. Very well-known and appraised. Strong bill and stout tail. Its sound varies from region to region. It inhabits the edge of the forest, lowlands and mountains. Granivorous, it also eats leaves.

Thick-billed Saltator 19.5cm. Yellowish bill on the base. It inhabit the edge of the forest and high mountains in the Southeast. Granivorous, but it also eats leaves and fruits.

Parulidae Parula pitiayumi Mariquita 10cm. Silvícola de vasta distribuição; habita as copas.

Inquieta. Voz fina, suave.

Insetívora, também aprecia néctar e frutos; aproveita secreção de pulgões.

Parulidae Basileuterus leucoblepharus Pula-pula-assobiador 14,5cm. Endêmica. Círculo no olho destacado. Canto melodioso, assobio descendente. Vive no clima úmido das serras altas cobertas de floresta no Sudeste.

Insetívora de sub-bosque.

Icteridae Cacicus chrysopterus Tecelão, Soldado 20,5cm. Canto melodioso e variado; dependura-se, faz reverências. Tece seu ninho em forma de bolsa. Voa bem. Vive no interior da floresta, em casais. Onívora. Interessante modo de pesquisar: introduz seu bico nas flores, cascas, etc, abrindo em seguida.

Fringillidae Carduelis magellanica Pintassilgo 11cm. Gorjear fino, bem variado em andamento rapidíssimo. Vive em bando na floresta secundária aberta, árvores em plantações e quintais, cerrado, etc.

Inquieta, vôo ondulado. Nidifica na copa da Araucária. Granívora especializada.

Fringillidae Euphonia violacea Gaturamo-verdadeiro 12cm. Belíssima, apreciada pelo canto; imita outras aves. Habita a orla da floresta, fruteiras, etc.

Alimenta-se de substâncias vegetais: frutas, folhas, botões, néctar; aprecia a Erva-de-passarinho (Loranthacea).

Tropical Parula 10cm. Silviculous with vast distribution, inhabits the tree crowns. Restless. Fine voice, soft. Insectivorous, it also appreciates nectar and fruits, uses the jumping plant louse’s secretion.

White-browed Warbler 14.5cm. Endemic. Circle in the eye highlighted. Melodious singing, descendent whistle. It inhabits in the humid high covered mountains of the Southeast forest. Insectivorous of low Forest stratum.

Golden-winged Cacique 20.5cm. Melodious and varied singing, it hangs and bowls.

It weaves its nest in the form of a basket. It is good flier.

It inhabits the interior of the forest, in couples.

Onivorous. Interesting way of research: inserts its bill in flowers, rinds, etc to open.

Hooded Siskin 11cm. Voice: very fast, musical, varied song. It lives in flock in the open secondary forest, trees in plantations and courtyards, savannah, etc.

Restless, wavy flight. It nests in the strata of the Araucaria tree.

Specialized Granivorous.

Violaceous Euphonia 12cm. Beautiful, appreciated for its singing, it imitates other birds. It inhabits the edge of the forest, fruit trees, etc.

It feeds on vegetal substances: fruits, leaves, buttons, nectar; it appreciates fruits of Loranthacea.

A Caixa de Aves é numerada e feita com retalhos de madeira. Para cada Caixa produzida planta-se uma árvore nativa.

Dessa forma, esperamos divulgar e conservar um pedacinho da riqueza da nossa Floresta Atlântica.

The Bird Box is numbered and made with wood chips. For each Box produced a native tree is planted.
