What is Entertainment Design?

for
Orlando, Florida
Originally from Miami, Florida
It’s the design of themed elements and physical spaces that are driven by theme and story — brought to life through immersive, engaging experiences. The best examples are Walt Disney World or Universal Studios theme parks, but theme and story can be found in museums, restaurants, hotels, healthcare facilities, and more.
What’s your job like?
As a Technical Designer, my job is to design elements, stages, and sets for various clients across the themed entertainment industry. We make accurate 3D models of the element, down to the nuts and bolts, and create production drawings that get passed on to the fabrication team. From there, we oversee the fabrication and finishing processes all the way to installation.
How did Ringling College prepare you for the industry?
Courses like Design Thinking were fundamental to my becoming a wellrounded designer, while learning programs like AutoCad, SketchUp, and Revit qualified me for my current position.

Tarun Lak Computer Animation ’16
What’s your job like?

Emeryville, California
Originally from Chennai, India
My job is to bring the characters of Pixar stories to life. That involves working with the director and animation team to execute a vision for the performance of the characters, handling a wide variety of scenes from subtle acting to dynamic action. We design poses that reflect the attitudes and movements specific to the characters to convince the audience that they are alive and are making choices that drive them through the story.
How did Ringling College prepare you for your career?
Ringling gave me a foundational understanding of design, film language, and principles of the craft of animation. The structure of assignments, feedback sessions, and deadlines mimicked a real job. It was not a big switch to go from being a student to a working professional.

What’s your job like?

New York, New York
Originally from Grimaud, France
My role is to explore the world and all the environments of a film. In the beginning of the movie I talk with the directors and understand their vision and aesthetics. I start painting concept art, mood pieces, and try to get a feel of all the important locations. As the movie progresses I get assigned specific locations and design and paint everything in that location. I focus on the feel of a place and try to exaggerate that emotion.
How did Ringling College prepare you for your career?
My favorite teachers at Ringling were George Pratt and Matteo Caloiaro. They were extremely influential to me, and introduced me to a lot of incredible artists and taught me how to see the big picture. They taught me how to see in shapes, and think of the feel of an environment instead of getting lost in the details.

Carlos Oliveras Colom
Graphic Design ’15
What is it like working at Plenty?

Working for Plenty is like having a little glimpse into the future. Plenty is a tech start-up on its way to redefining agriculture as we know it by growing fruits and vegetables vertically. We are a small team, so it’s great to be part of the front line of how a brand looks and feels. Working on a small team allows me to wear many hats, from designing the brand’s look to art directing video to fluffing up lettuce in photoshoots.
What do you love most about your job?
As a designer, I like to be part of something that matters and work on projects with a bigger picture that I can help guide in a cohesive, design-forward way. Having your designs exist in the world and be embraced and consumed is the cherry on top.

What’s
your job like?
Monica, California
from Baldwin City, Kansas
As an environment texture artist, some of my responsibilities, such as shader creation, modeling, sculpting, and set dressing, are all combined to create 3D environments for our games. Team effort and collaboration with several departments is necessary to create those environments. All of this provides the opportunity to share stories through characters and the worlds around them.
How did Ringling College prepare you for your career?
While Ringling facilitated several technical courses, the faculty pushed for, not only, quality in our craft, but also big picture thinking and for the widening of the application of our skills. Above the courses, projects, and late nights in the studios, I would not be where I am without Career Services. Being a student worker for four years put me in an environment to learn from the job. Even now I can’t advocate enough for them and what they do.

Originally from Orlando, Florida
How did Ringling College prepare you for a career as a fine artist?
Ringling gave me the space, resources, and faculty engagement to be challenged as a student and grow as an artist. I benefited from the intense focus on painting. Since graduating, I’ve participated in a number of group exhibitions and mounted my own solo shows in spaces ranging from California to New York City, Mexico, Miami, and Montreal. I still keep in close touch with Ringling peers, who remain some of my closest friends and valuable connections in the art world.

Is your career what you thought it would be while you were at Ringling College?
Yes. I aimed to be a producer for animation when I was a Ringling student. Within four years after graduating, I was blessed to become just that.
Do you consider yourself innovative?
I do. I consider myself innovative because when I gain a skill or quality in my life, I apply it to all facets of my life. I see and live beyond a workspace or social construct.

How did Ringling College prepare you for your career?
I was lucky to be surrounded by a heartfelt community of friends that encouraged me to never settle, which is how I ended up in this career. From them, I learned that one of the most important things to do in college is to be proactive in solidifying yourself. Your college takeaway is dependent on the community you developed and what you did with your time. If you spend your time dreaming, dream big!

What’s your job like?
Burbank, California
Originally from Marysville, Michigan

Really busy. We do short content marketing for ABC and Hulu. This is mostly video promos, which can range from editing footage from already filmed shows to creating something totally from scratch, like the Oscars’ Top Gun promo. We might make 70 unique commercials for a series, and then each of those is converted to different lengths for all of the platforms. Last year during the fall launch we had about 224 different projects, with a range of people involved, but I am working with all of them.
How did Ringling College prepare you for this?
The collaborative aspect of the Film program was hard as a young person trying to figure it all out and working with a lot of people feeling the same — it makes it really hard. Once you’ve figured this all out and you see how everything comes together, it’s amazing. The larger art education has been totally invaluable. When I’m having a meeting with an art director about typography or a sound director about the score, I can speak their language.

Hannah Segraves
Motion Design ’18

How did Ringling College prepare you for your career?
Ringling gave me the opportunity to experience real-world projects from the first day. The classroom setting creates an infinite space for creative growth and exploration. I was guided with one-on-one critique by professors with years of industry experience. From four years of developing my creative style and technical knowledge, I was able to start at Nickelodeon straight out of college with the confidence and knowledge of an industry professional.
What’s your job like?
I am a designer/animator working alongside a team of creatives. We collaborate on advertisements for television, Paramount+, social media, and Times Square billboards. The projects are often creatively open-ended, which gives us freedom to explore solutions in our own style and truly express ourselves through design and animation. Together, we build on each other’s ideas, work through technical problems, and come up with colorful, playful solutions that match Nickelodeon’s brand identity.

Gretchen Leffler
Visual Studies ’19
What’s your job like?
I started at Laika three years ago as a digital fabricator, modeling parts for 3D printing and integrating them into puppets for the film Wildwood. I also modeled accessories for several of the characters that were printed and then integrated into the puppets. After a year and a half I joined the VFX team, where I work on similar things, but with a different workflow.
What made you want to come to Ringling?
Career Services was the standout for me. They are such a wonderful resource to have and were immensely helpful to me. I joined as a representative and would go to discuss my portfolio and resume often. They really helped me in preparing all of my material and getting ready for interviews on campus. I am still in contact with them in my work as a mentor for current Visual Studies students.

What made you want to come to Ringling College?
When I heard that Ringling was introducing a brand new major in VR Development, I knew this was a field of study I wanted to be at the forefront of. Coming from a STEM background, this major allows me to combine my technical skillset with art and design. VR technology is becoming mainstream across various industries — the medical field, architectural visualization, entertainment, and more — which means I can explore multiple career paths.
How did Ringling College prepare you for the industry?
Ringling has provided incredible opportunities for personal growth and they’ve helped me build a professional network of clients. While working on the client-based project with the Moffitt Cancer Center, I worked alongside doctors and researchers in the field. Opportunities like this provide the perfect exposure to a professional, real-world setting and delivering a final product to a client on time, and on budget.
Don’t wait until after graduation.
Internships are invaluable—a way to test yourself, a way to get your foot in the door, a way to make sure that the career you’re striving toward is really the one you want.
Ringling College makes it simple. By fostering relationships with top firms, we’ve created a pipeline between the Ringling campus and art and design hot spots.
Ringling College students and recent alumni make up half of Pixar’s summer animation internships in 2024.
