About Me

Hello! My name is Rinda Dennis, and I am a graduate with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Architecture & Design degree from Harding University.

I believe that design impacts lives, and it goes beyond the aesthetics of a space. It can affect people mentally and physically. Design can rejuvenate people by creating environments that optimize comfort, reduce stress, and promote well-being for its users. This is done through thoughtful layouts, certain elements, or principles. I believe in designing a functional space that improves the lives of the users. I believe design goes beyond creating a functional space. I love being a part of the whole design process.

Thoughtful design considerations contributes to a welcoming atmosphere that alleviates anxiety and fear commonly associated with medical settings. The design concept for Sweet Haven Pediatrics Clinic draws inspiration from cotton candy. Cotton candy is a universal treat that everyone enjoys. The concept is inspired by the many layers that every adolescent possesses. Just like children, cotton candy is made up of many layers. The design will incorporate shape and texture throughout the space to create a harmonious atmosphere. Soft, curved shapes can be seen in furnishings and architectural details. Sweet Haven uses vibrant colors, playful furniture, and age-appropriate design to contribute to a positive and comforting experience for the children and their families. By incorporating these elements, the design will create an environment that provides a fun and harmonious experience within the clinic.

The Harmony Hotel

Hospitality / Spring 2023

Project Description

This project is a two-week charrette centered on designing a boutique hotel in Nashville, Tennessee, known as Music City. Named Harmony Hotel to reflect the city’s rich musical heritage, the project focuses on the design of the hotel’s lobby and key amenities. Inspired by Nashville’s vibrant music scene, the Harmony Hotel features a bar, live music performances, and a dance floor, creating an engaging and immersive experience for guests.

Area: 7,200 ft²

Software: Revit, Enscape

CONCEPT STATEMENT

The design concept for The Harmony Hotel is rooted in Nashville’s rich cultural history and vibrant music scene. Drawing inspiration from the city’s energy and charm, the design utilizes light, color, scale, and emphasis to create a dynamic and inviting space. The use of light is seen through large windows and unique lighting details. The use of colors captures the ambiance of the music city scene. Scale is played with through the use of large items to bring moments of emphasis in a whimsical way. The overall concept for The Harmony Hotel is a celebration of the city’s energy, charm, and cultural heritage.

FLOOR PLAN

The floor plan is divided into two parts: lobby and bar. The lobby area features a reception, concierge, and valet desk. The lobby also includes comfy seating. The bar’s section of the plan includes bar-style seating, as well as booth and table seating. The bar offers live music, so there is a stage and a dance floor.

MOOD BOARD
MOOD BOARD

All of the colors used in the lobby are warm tones to create an inviting atmosphere. With twenty-foot ceilings, the design plays with scale and makes the furniture look smaller, creating a whimsical space. The lighting in this room references Nashville and its music scene. The above lights are intended to resemble a guitar pick. While the huge windows let in natural light, they also add a sense of southern charm to the space. The style of the windows, patterned curtains, and the “living room” spaces by the windows all convey southern charm.

BAR

The bar space has lower ceilings and darker colors to create a moody atmosphere. The booth wall has wall molding details and accent wallpaper to create the welcoming atmosphere that Nashville has. Molding detail are also visible on the siding of bar. The Nashville environment offers numerous photo opportunities, and this bar has a wall designed for that purpose.

Searcy Branding

Group Commercial / Spring 2023

Project Description

This branding project has been a long-term collaboration involving Harding University’s Graphic Design, Integrated Marketing Communication, and Interior Architecture & Design students. This year, two teams were tasked with rebranding the city of Searcy Arkansas. This involved creating a new brand for the city’s identity. The popular Spring Park, the city administrative building, and the official welcome center all needed to be rebranded. I personally focused on the city administration building.

Area: 9,650 ft²

Software: Revit, Enscape

The designs shown below are the final branding designs created by the graphics team. The colors used combine the old small-town charm with a new vibrant life. The interior team incorporated the existing building’s mid-century modern style into the new design. The combination of modern finishes and historical architectural elements transforms Searcy’s identity. With a strong heritage of community, wholesome hometown fun, and small business, the brand embodies both Searcy’s past and its future.

SITE

The administration building houses the city officials’ offices. The reception is the first thing visitors and city officials will see, so it was important to create a welcoming environment. The design drew inspiration from the mid-century time period with straight lines, wood elements, and warm tones. The offices’ glass walls reflect the mid-century design of the building’s upper windows. The wall separation between the work cafe and reception area is inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright’s Japanese style.

CONCEPT STATEMENT

Cognitive therapy has been proven to help with PTSD and trauma. Cognition is the process of gaining knowledge and understanding through thought, experience, and senses. The frontal lobe region of the brain is responsible for cognitive function. The influence of the house comes from the frontal lobe. The design will draw from the soft and rounded curve of the frontal lobe. It will put the client at ease and allow for strong, effortless conversation. The design will use soft curved lines and rhythm to establish a calm space. The use of soft colors, and materials, will also help create a restful environment.

Texas is the best overall state for a disabled veteran to live in. The benefits offered to them are unlike any other state. It is one of only two states that offers full exemptions from property taxes for disabled veterans. Texas also has no state income tax. Hutto is the safest place in Texas to live. When raising a teen, it’s important to look at safe places to live. Hutto has a population size of about 30,000. It’s is only thirty minutes away from the city life of Austin, Texas. The kitchen takes all aspects of wellbeing into consideration. The island was designed with a lower overhang to accommodate David’s wheelchair. The refrigerator dispensers have been lowered to make them more accessible. The sink and cooktop are height-adjustable, and the wall oven opens vertically to enable universal design. A portion of the backsplash are mirrors, which helps David with his PTSD by letting him see people behind him. The blue used on the cabinets are intended to create a sense of trust and strength.

Green is used in this room because it is a relaxing color, which is beneficial for David’s PTSD. Curves and wood tones were used to enhance the calm atmosphere. The room has a five-foot turn circle on both sides of the bed, making it wheelchair accessible.

PRIMARY BATH

Accessibility factors in the bathroom include a roll-in shower with a five-foot turn circle, grab bars for the toilet, and an open height-adjustable sink. There is shelving next to the sink to compensate for the lost storage caused by the exposed sink. The plant wall is a unique way to create a calming atmosphere in the bathroom.
