Info sheet “Corrosion protection of steel structures by protective paint systems” by DIN EN 12944-6 Rilit-Lackfabrik GmbH • Ersteiner Straße 11 • D-79346 Endingen

Why corrosion protecion All metal substrats, espacially steel, could corrode under waether conditions or poor conditions. This is often not only an optical problem, it could althougt be a safty risk on architectual parts for example. To eliminated this problem, it is possible to protect the substrats with a corrosion protection coating. Wich standard To give the user some advise wich protection is needed, the standard DIN EN ISO 12944-6 was created. In this standard, posibile exposures were clasified, different test and test durations and their results were defined.

Wich test and results were required Salt spray test DIN EN ISO 9227:2006-10 The coated object is tested in a salt fog at 35°C with a salt concentration of 50 +/- 5g/l. Before the test, the object is scretched 1mm wide. A 1mm creepback in both directions at the end of the test duration is allowed, other defects like blisters are not allowed. Continuous condensation DIN EN ISO 6270 The coated object is tested in 100% rel.humidity at 45 °C. After the required test duration no defects (like blisters) were allowed, a adhesion test is altough be tested. Adhesion test The adhesion is tested according to standart cross-cut test DIN EN ISO 2409 or pull-of test DIN EN ISO 4624 on coated object/substrate. Following results were required: Cross-cut ≤ 1 pull-off ≥ 5 MPa Determination of resistance to humid atmospheres containing sulfur dioxide DIN EN ISO 3231 The test is only requierd on classification C5 I. The test object were tested under a humid sulphur dioxide athmosphere. After the required test duration no defects are allowed.

Wich corrosion protection classes were called in the standard Classification Standard Examples* C2 Low Rural regions with low pollution C3 Medium City, industry atmosphere medium pollution C4 Strong Industry, tunnles traffic junctions C5 I Very strong Industry, high humidity, aggressive atmosphere C5 M Very strong Coastal zones with high salt content * The examples above were not written down in the standard, they are only depend on our expierence and valuation.
