How are we living? Chicago’s Boulevards as Catalysts for Human Connection

revit | illustrator

This proposal studies how the boulevards might act as catalysts for human connection by proposing a prototypical intervention that can be applied throughout the system. The design can then be adjusted to respond to more specific site conditions. The goal is to understand how certain nuances of the urban landscape deny and create opportunities for human connection. Public spaces that present opportunities as such become increasingly important as our world becomes more digitized and reliant on insufficient parasocial connections.

Adaptive reuse of & addition to the Century Building in Chicago’s Historic Loop District

revit | enscape | illustrator

The modern glass-box addition to the south of the Century Building creates a juxtaposition between old and new. The contrast between the two forms makes time visbile and forces attention to the essence of each style. Public student spaces are banked within the new S-shaped volume while private spaces are housed in the existing structure.

Urban infill community and education center in Chicago’s West Woodlawn neighborhood

revit | photoshop | illustrator

The impact of redlining and other social implications has left West Woodlawn, a once bustling and dense neighborhood, with vacant underutilized space and gaps in social infrastructure. This project aims to regenerate the present context of the neighborhood and bring back a sense of wholeness to the block by establishing architectural, green, and social densities at varying degrees and locations.

‘Densities’, in this case, is defi type of occupancy with a defined goal. Actual levels of mass density vary within each category. The adjacent drawing shows the distribution and relationships of the three densities ned below. To fuel regeneration within the block, the Cottage Grove side of the block prioritized architectural densities, the Evans side of the block prioritized green densities, and social densities were implemented within

Architectural intervention at Illinois Beach State Park in the form of a field kitchen

revit | enscape | photoshop | illustrator

The intersection of man-made and natural conditions at Illinois Beach State Park is quite obvious. However, the line between the two begins to blur in certain places; natural elements may be perceived as artificial, and man-made elements as natural. The following architecture is inspired by the Winnower, the tool designed to better understand this condition in the landscape.
