he journey that we started earlier this year with the first issue of Rihla was one of excitement – new product, new territory, new interactions. » Majid Al Futtaim's (MAF) first IMAX theatre has arrived in KSA. How is this concept going to be expanded upon in the Kingdom?

Majid Al Futtaim has agreed to a multitheatre deal with IMAX. Our Riyadh Park multiplex is the first in VOX Cinemas' planned roll-out of the IMAX experience across the Kingdom. IMAX offers the world's most immersive movie viewing experience and if the popularity and sold-out shows for Avengers: Infinity War and Black Panther are anything to go by, we see a huge appetite for the IMAX experience among Saudi movie-goers.

» How is MAF poised to tapping and expanding into KSA's entertainment segment?

With a population of around 33 million people, Saudi Arabia is by far the largest market in the GCC for us. To meet expected demand, VOX Cinemas will be investing SAR 2 billion over the next five years to roll out 600 screens in multiple locations. » Could you identify the cities where these screens will be located?

While specifics of the roll-out of 600 VOX cinemas screens are still being finalised, we can confidently say that our goal is to ensure our presence is felt in more than 1 0 major cities across the Kingdom.

In doing so, Saudis can be rest assured knowing that they will have access to quality entertainment irrespective of their location, and we look forward to making a number of exciting announcements shortly.

» What

about the layout and design, will there be any special considerations?

VOX Cinemas works closely with the Saudi Government and the General Commission for Audio-Visual Media and we will be guided by them in the delivery of a culturally appropriate theatre experience. Currently at VOX Cinemas' Riyadh Park, the very first multiplex in Saudi Arabia, we offer separate family screenings and menonly screenings.

» Will MAF Ventures launch other entertainment concepts in the Kingdom?

Absolutely. In fact, the VOX Cinemas multiplex in Riyadh Park is located within our largest Magic Planet anywhere in the region. And that is adjacent to our first Little Explorers edutainment centre in Saudi. We will be investing in two more Magic Plant locations and look forward to making announcements soon. We have also announced a range of further investments that include seven

fashion outlets, two new malls (Mall of Saudi and City Centre Ishbiliya) and a hotel (in Mall of Saudi).

» How do you see the expansion of the cinema industry boosting local employment? How would Saudization fit in with this?

We anticipate that the expansion of VOX Cinemas in the country will create more than 3,000 direct jobs and we are actively looking for Saudi nationals to fill those roles. As a testament to this commitment, we can proudly say that presently all our cinema managers in the Kingdom are Saudis. Furthermore, MAF is an enthusiastic participant in the Kingdom's Vision 2030 and, as part of an overall announced investment into the Kingdom of SAR 16 billion, about 114,000 employment opportunities will be created for Saudis.

» You mentioned two more mall projects. Tell us more about timelines and other details.

We have announced two major mall projects - Mall of Saudi Arabia and City Centre Ishbiliya, both will feature some of our most renowned leisure attractions including VOX Cinemas and Magic Planet. Mall of Saudi Arabia in particular will be home to the Kingdom's very first indoor ski slope.

Given the rapid expansion and spotlight on KSA, what is your growth expectation in the entertainment and leisure segment of KSA? VOX Cinemas Riyadh Park, the first multiplex in the Kingdom has so far been repeatedly sold-out for screenings of Avengers: Infinity War and Black Panther.

Therefore, we see enormous demand for new high-quality experiences, not only in Riyadh but across the country. That is why Majid Al Futtaim has made a SAR1 6 billion investment commitment to the retail, and leisure and entertainment sectors in Saudi Arabia and we look forward to serving our audiences and customers in the Kingdom for decades to come.

In your view, how does the opening of the leisure and entertainment industry boost tourism to KSA? Domestic tourism is a major focus of Vision 2030 and the creation of great leisure and entertainment options across the Kingdom, whether they are cinemas, malls, hotels, entertainment centers or retail outlets, will contribute significantly to Saudi Arabia’s fast emerging tourism market.

Empowering Women Through Sports Halah Alhamrani, founder of FLAGBOXING and one of the board members of the Saudi Olympics Committee, in conversation with Rihla, talks about her passion for fitness, her aspiration to get women in Saudi Arabia fit and her plans to expand FLAGBOXING in the Kingdom.

Women empowerment is on a rise in the Kingdom today. With their growing involvement in various aspects of society, interest in fitness and sports is mounting with a positive response from women of all ages. While it may not be easy or instantaneous to bring a change, Halah has been chipping away for years encouraging women to embrace a healthy lifestyle.

Born in the United States of America and raised in Saudi Arabia, Halah practiced gymnastics and martial arts f rom a very young age. A black belt in Jiu Jitsu at just 18 years old, Halah knew her calling rested in the world of f itness. In a brave move, she established FLAGBOXING, the f irst and only entity in the Kingdom

to offer f itness and combat classes for women. FLAG is an acronym for “Flight Like A Girl”. “My motivator to start FLAGBOXING was a personal journey of getting back into shape.

The name dawned on me just in an instance and was striking so I started an Instagram account focusing on kickboxing. It was a way for me to track my progress. However, over a period of time, this journey changed wherein I realised that by posting my personal f itness journal on social media, women were starting to take notice and be inspired. This was the second phase where I realised the importance and need to empower women in Saudi Arabia using the medium of sports and f itness,” reveals Halah.

With an instigation from Social Media, the concept of FLAGBOXING started around 15 years ago in Jeddah, the second largest city in Saudi Arabia.

Hesitantly, women approached FLAGBOXING wanting to learn more on how to get in better shape or increase physical strength. Halah recalls, “Through my limited resources, I realised that women were very excited and interested in combat sports in Saudi Arabia. Over the years, I found that the passion for this sport has grown.

We started with around 35 women.

Currently, we have about 150 students ranging in age from 13-65 years. Some of our members are moms who find it difficult to attend regularly. So our membership number is constantly changing. ”

TRANSFORMATION

"FLAG" is an acronym for "Flight Like A Girl". We started with around 35 women. Currently, we have about 150 students ranging in age from 13- 65 years.

FLAGBOXING offers classes ranging from Boxing, Kickboxing, Crossfit, Calisthenics, Interval Training to Bootcamps. Halah believes these classes are beneficial beyond physical fitness and the advantage extends psychologically too. This especially applies to women who have problems in their households and relationships.

Women who feel that they are being mentally bullied within their own household, the fitness sessions help in releasing the negative energy which is bottled inside and gives them a voice that they did not have before. Speaking further on benefits of exercising, Halah add, “As a fitness professional, I can see that transformation the minute a woman walks into a boxing or kickboxing class. This according to me is not a physical change but an absolute mental change which is the most important aspect. This transformation is very vivid wherein right away a woman starts to feel a lot more empowered, a lot stronger in herself. If she was feeling intimidated in her sub-conscious, she now feels a lot more confident when she walks out of the gym and so that mental transformation is quite imperative to begin with. “

Halah was recently appointed as one of the board members of the Saudi Olympics Committee for mixed martial arts. With this appointment, she holds a say in how to develop the sport of Kickboxing, Muay Thai and MMA in the Kingdom for women. Interestingly, by the end of the year, Jeddah will be hosting the first local Women’s Kickboxing competition in the Kingdom. This event is going to be an eye opener and subsequently, having women participate in a competition is only going to act as an anchor to get more women interested in the field of sports. Enjoying the dizzy heights of success, Halah discusses her plans of expansion stating, “There is immense potential for FLAGBOXING to grow as the government is finally making it legal for women to join sports competitions. This would only be a positive step for FLAGBOXING as right now it is the only combat gym in Saudi Arabia for women. As I cater to regular women who are not looking to compete, now I would also like to develop a team who can compete in contests. My plans are to expand FLAGBOXING to Riyadh as the demand from there is high and then Khobar is next on the radar.”

Following the Kingdom’s latest reforms around women, many have started showing interest in joining gyms and undertaking physical training activities. Thus, there is tremendous interest but also a lack of understanding in general. It is important to educate the masses so that they practice correctly and benefit from the fitness regime. Speaking from her experience, Halah says, “Most of them gravitate more towards a sport they feel will help them lose weight rather than focusing on getting toned.

This is due to a lack of understanding in terms of what would best suit them.

A lot of women also gravitate towards cardio and take up sports which makes them feel less intimidated such as aerobic style sports / classes.” While the students have some catchingup to do, it is more important for the instructors to be on top of their game. As a certified trainer, Halah emphasizes, “The looming problem is that now there will be a huge boom with facilities opening up in Saudi Arabia because the government is making it easier to obtain licenses for fitness outlets for women. This will

increase the need for female trainers in the Kingdom. The outcome will be a lot of uneducated instructors for the classes. This is a scary thought as there is a high potential for people getting hurt or injured. Furthermore, women’s goals will not be reached as they do not understand the basics.”

Being associated with this industry for over 15 years now and having mentored hundreds of women, Halah is an inspiration and torch bearer of women’s empowerment in the Kingdom. Her contribution in the realm of women’s fitness is unprecedented and she is not stopping here. “I aspire to develop a children’s programme and implement it in schools thought out KSA. We are already developing a trainer programme for women who would like to become boxing / kickboxing instructors. A women’s selfdefence programme seems essential but I am yet to develop it. There are these interesting endeavours in pipeline. I am ready for the challenge, with time, to spread the passion for sports out there.” she concludes.

Ostrich egg from South Africa: Making it one of the strangest gifts ever, an ostrich egg attracts tourists visiting South Africa with its unusual and traditional decorations. Zulu artists spend hours decorating the egg shells with images of African animals and African maps. The large egg is available in three different patterns – decoupage, hand carved and hand painted. Sourced from Oudtshoorn town within South Africa which is regarded as the ostrich capital of the world, these authentic eggs measure

approximately 14 cm long and 13 cm wide. While many travellers take this unique showpiece back home, it is highly recommended that you check the customs at the country of your destination. Pack this souvenir wisely and avoid carrying it in your hand bag.

Trolls from Norway: Trolls represent Norwegian mythology and Scandinavian folklore. They were believed to be a group of people living in caves far away from any human interaction. The general image of a troll is that of a mischievous person with crooked teeth, spiked hair and shabby clothes. They still manage to look like cute, little creatures, though.

Norway has named a road after these local legends, the Trollstigen - Trolls Road which is beautifully laid over a mountain. Travellers can relive the memories of the drive across Troll Road by buying a troll car dangler or a troll statue as a memento.

Dream catchers from America: A popular American cultural icon, the dreamcatcher originated from Ojibwa, a North American Indian tribe. The design consists of a wooden hoop which is woven in a web like pattern and further decorated with feathers and beads. The sole purpose of a dreamcatcher was to protect a person, mostly babies, while they slept. It was believed that the web filters negative dreams out and passes the positive dreams through the feathers and beads to the person sleeping below it. Be it handmade with a natural red willow branch or the wooden multicoloured hoops, the dreamcatcher continues to be used in a traditional fashion serving its purpose to protect its owner from bad vibes. It comes in the form of a wall hanging, painting, keychain, necklace, earrings and many other variations to suit every traveller’s need.

Scarab from Egypt: A Beetle or Scarab is historically linked with Egypt and holds religious significance. Scarabs represent the Egyptian Sun God “Ra” who was believed to roll out the sun every day and then roll it back in. Hence, the Scarab souvenir today is seen as a symbol of birth, renewal and resurrection. Tied along with beads, Scarab bracelets and necklaces come in various colours, although blue Scarabs are most in demand.

The Golem from Czech Republic: The Golem is a mysterious character who is widely spoken about in Prague.

Legend has it that Golem was magically created out of mud and clay to protect the Jews. While the most part of the story shows him in a good light, it is in the end when Golem turns violent and has to be turned back to mud by its creator, which is somewhat of a surprise.

Some people in Prague still believe that Golem is watching over them. Golem’s popularity is indicative through its reach - businesses and brands are named after him throughout the country.

Popular souvenirs of Golem are ceramic statues of him in varying sizes.

Martenitsa from Bulgaria: In Bulgaria when you wish well for someone, you present them with the Martenitsa doll. The handmade dolls are made using red and white wool or cotton. They are also used to celebrate Baba Marta which means Grandma Marta in English. The Baba Marta marks the beginning of Spring and as per ancient tradition, she is conceived as an old grumpy woman whose mood fluctuates just like the weather does during that season. INSIGHTS Business etiquettes are as much about the things that are said as well as those that are unsaid. It’s about the energy, the social comfort level you provide to your colleague and a positive working environment, all of which contribute to the etiquette.

While a hand shake is the global norm, it may not be welcomed in some cultures. While we may assume in the current accessible and informationon-your-fingertips culture that we are all the same, we are, but with lots of many detailed nuances which make us unique. Preparedness and prior research presents to the other party that you are keen to build relationships having done your homework to acclimatise yourself to their way of being.

Here’s a brief look at a few cultures on what is accepted and what you should avoid.

Friday is a holy day for Muslims. The first working day is Sunday.

The five daily prayers are important to many Muslim business people in the region. Knowing these prayer timings are good for scheduling meetings accordingly and are indicators of punctuality.

Meeting times are mostly run in a relaxed fashion in the Arab world and they are big on hospitality. Business cards are preferred to be in both English and Arabic, however, this is not compulsory.

The month of Ramadan is very significant. If living or visiting during this period, it is important to respect the set norms that are observed.

Refrain from consuming any food or beverage in public spaces. When attending a meeting during Ramadan, you may not be asked for water or coffee / tea. For non-fasting individuals, it is recommended to eat indoors away from fasting colleagues.

Europe Germany: When setting up a meeting in Germany, it is not advisable to suddenly change plans. Business events are well-structured and conducted as per pre-booked appointments. Last minute changes are not well received as it suggests that you do not value their time. So, be punctual and if you are expecting a delay for whatever reason, get in touch with the meeting organizer and keep them informed. Avoid using jokes or slangs during your presentation.

Germans prefer a direct and logical approach.

Arab business persons like to conduct discussions and negotiations face-toface. For female business associates it is important to dress appropriately. Full length clothing is most suited.

France: It is advisable to speak in French, when in France. The people prefer to speak their local language and hold their identity very dear.

Introductions are always made using

both your first and last name. First impressions in France are heavily dependent on appearance. Business attire, jewellery and accessories will earn valuable points in the office. The concept of ‘Casual Friday' is not widely known in the French workplace.

UK: Time is very valuable with the British. Wasted time is equal to wasted resources in their culture.

Business meetings are always set and completed within the working hours of an organisation. A clear agenda must be printed and circulated among the attendees before the meeting begins and similarly, minutes of the meeting summarizing the discussion must be shared afterwards.

People also prefer to have their own personal space so do not stand too close. A firm handshake (not too firm) is a given for both men and women in a professional workspace. Humour is very important in the English language and can be found in the work environment, too. Finally, the British love meetings over tea.

When entering a social function, shake hands with the person to your right and then continue around the room going from right to left. Say good-bye to each person individually when leaving. Soft handshakes are common across Africa.

As a sign of respect, Africans bow their heads to superiors or to people who are older than them. Never use your left hand when giving gifts to Africans.

Use either the right hand or both hands whenever handing over a gift. Do not begin eating unless the eldest person has started eating and it is considered taboo to talk business during dinner. takes a seat first. This is considered a sign of respect. Never gift a watch to a Chinese colleague. It represents death!

Avoid black, blue or white wrapping paper. Chinese are very particular about colours and have a firm belief system about lucky and unlucky colours. The Chinese appreciate a conservative dress code and you should avoid physical contact while conversing. After a business meeting, allow your Chinese partners to leave the meeting room first.

Asia Asians value the group rather than the individual. In general, they conduct business, make decisions and socialize as a group. Handshakes are a common greeting and are accompanied by a nod or bow. Business cards with both your native language and the language of the Asian country you are doing business in are recommended. Always include your title on the card. Personal space is very dear so avoid back patting, putting an arm around someone's shoulders and hugs.

China Refer to your business associate with their title and last name. While introducing yourself, stand up and remaining standing until the associate

Japan Bowing is a typical way of greeting each other. Handshakes sometimes occur but you should let your Japanese colleague initiate it. The business meeting is often led by the senior member in the group, while younger members converse less out of respect. Junior position employees should never sit across from senior employees. Giving gifts is common, but you should pay special attention to how you present your gift. The ‘MENA Traveller Destination Leaderboards’ for Q1 of 2018 was revealed by Wego, the online travel market place across the MENA region.

The destination rankings showcased the relative popularity of global destinations amongst travellers based in the MENA region. This information was sourced f rom users who use Wego and it is this flight and hotel search data that has been analysed to determine the destination rankings.

Global Destination Leaderboard Egypt retains its top position in Q1 2018 as the most popular destination for travellers, f rom across the MENA region with Cairo leading the way as the most searched destination overall. “MENA travellers are lured by the culture, scenic attractions, and incredible food that can be experienced in Egypt but we also see large volumes of traff ic f rom the business and expatriate sectors,” said Mamoun Hmedan, Wego Managing Director MENA and India.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia comes second and received a steady mix of business, expatriate and religious travel. There has also been an increase in domestic travel intent in 2018, possibly due to increased activities by Saudi Commission for Tourism and Antiquities (SCTA) and the new Entertainment Authority. With the Kingdom increasingly interested in promoting tourism, both domestically and f rom around the region, it will be interesting to watch the evolving dynamics in the years ahead.

India stood at number three followed by Turkey at number four, which is a notch up one rung each in the destination leaderboard for Q1 of 2018 vs Q1 of 2017, while UAE fell f rom number three to number f ive. Despite the overall drop, Dubai remains a popular destination for MENA travellers.

The biggest gainer in Q1 2018 was Oman which jumped a massive nine place to #15, an improvement likely related to opening of a new airport in Muscat and a host of new hotels and other facilities opening in the Sultanate. Oman’s national carrier, Oman Air, also now offers the most convenient way to get f rom to Doha f rom a range of countries. The biggest decline can be seen for Malaysia, which is down six places to #16 f rom #10 in Q1 2017. Last year saw a major decrease in tourist arrivals f rom KSA and UAE due to a confluence of increased competition f rom Turkey, Azerbaijan and Georgia.

Reduced promotional budgets f rom Malaysia’s side can also be a contributory factor. Since, Arabs are known to be the biggest spenders in the country, Tourism Malaysia is actively trying to reverse the

trend by making the visa process easier and ramping up advertising budgets.

Germany remains steady as the second most popular destination in Europe for MENA based travellers. It is popular with football lovers, for medical tourism and also as a major travel hub and jumping off point to other countries in Europe.

Azerbaijan has seen a signif icant uptick in interest with MENA travellers in 2018 and is now ranked number three up f rom number f ive a year ago. The country even overtook the tourism mega-destination France now at number four. Neighbouring country, Georgia, is also seeing a strong tourism growth f rom the MENA region. MENA Region

Bustling street markets, easy access to halal food, short flight durations and cultural familiarity are all reasons why Turkey remains consistently popular as a destination with MENA travellers.

Amman, Jordan emerged as the biggest winner amongst Middle Eastern cities with a spike in visitors in 2018 possibly attributed to launch of the new Jordan trail and other new tourism boosting initiatives. Fulfilling the Needs of a Global Muslim Traveller

‘Halal’ means permissible according to the rules of Islam. It is most frequently referred to in regards to food, but it actually includes any type of action permissible in Islam.

Halal travel literally means, travelling the world and having facilities to meet the faithbased needs. We explore this trending concept which is gaining momentum, and look at its potential and growth opportunities.

TRAVEL TRENDS Statistics state that the world’s Muslim population spent US$151 billion on travel in 2015 (excluding Hajj and Umrah), representing some 11% of the global tourism market worth US$1.3 trillion. Its value is expected to increase to US$243 billion by 2021, according to the State of the Global Islamic Economy Report 2016/17 by Thomson Reuters and DinarStandard. This report further states that Muslim travellers were second only to Chinese travellers, who spent US$168 billion in 2015, and ahead of US travellers, who spent US$147 billion that same year. Even further, regional trends reveal Muslim tourism expenditure was highest in the GCC at US$54 billion followed by the rest of the Middle East and North Africa at US$26 billion.

The Global Muslim Travel Index (GMTI) 2017 by Mastercard and Cresentrating estimated that in 2016 there were 121 million Muslim international travellers.

This is projected to grow to 156 million by 2020, where travel expenditure by Muslim travellers is expected to reach US$ 220 billion. It is also projected that the total Muslim travel expenditure

will reach US$ 300 billion by 2026. Just going by exponential figures, this new tourism trend is here to stay and will only grow bigger and better.

» Decoding the concept With such huge potential, the term unfortunately has been used very loosely across the tourism industry. For many travel players, there is a misconception that just offering ‘halal food’ makes a tourism entity ‘halal friendly’. Enver Cebi, COO of HalalBooking.com explains, “There is a common misconception that Muslim tourism is all about people going to do Muslim-things like pilgrimages, religious tours etc. while halal tourism is completely another thing. In reality, Muslim travellers go for regular holidays and want access to facilities where their basic religious needs are met.”

With a factual understanding of the concept, travel providers looking to tap into this segment also understand the growing Muslim population. This is the fastest growing religious segment in the world. As per the GMTI report, the Muslim population is expected to make up 26% of the world’s population by 2030.

» The halal essentials Explaining the concept even further, Fazal Bahardeen, CEO of Cresentrating says, “When we started off as a company around seven to eight years ago, we wanted to demystify the halal-travel market. In doing so, we came up with six most important faith-based needs of a Muslim traveller, which was further sub-divided into three areas – strictly practicing Muslims, practicing Muslims, less practicing Muslims.”

Having plainly described the needs, each traveller’s requirements may vary from person to person; while one may want all six; some would want just one or two factors.

Need to Have: 1. Halal food This is by far the most important service that a Muslim traveller looks out for when travelling.

2. Prayer facilities Praying five times a day is one amongst the five pillars of Islam. Prayer also called Salah, is a central element of Islamic practice. As a result of uncertain

travel circumstances, a traveller might not be able to offer all of the five prayers. In order to cater to this essential need, services and facilities that are frequented by Muslim travellers need to be equipped with prayer rooms. Wudhu - Another important consideration is the cleansing ritual. Wudhu is performed before a Muslim performs their prayers.

This requires the prayer rooms to have ‘foot washing’ facilities.

Good to have: 3. Water-friendly washrooms For Muslims, water plays a key role in purity and cleanliness, both of which are core aspects of the faith. Physical cleanliness is stressed as an essential component of being a Muslim. As such, special attention is given to hygiene in the washroom. This entails the use of water in the toilets, and it is discomforting for Muslim travellers when water is not available. Thus, it is important to provide facilities such as hand showers, bidets or even Japanesestyle toilets.

4. Ramadan services Although Muslims are less likely to travel during the month of Ramadan, there are still many looking to spend this time away from home, especially, if this period coincides with school holidays.

Destinations looking to attract Muslim travellers during this period need to be able to accommodate their special needs during the month of fasting. One such example is the catering of Suhoor and Iftar halal meals by hotels.

Bahardeen explains, “Based on our research, we have noticed that the hospitality industry outside of Muslim countries are still playing catch up with regards to catering to Muslim travellers.

The restaurant industry has developed substantially in this segment.”

5. No Non-Halal Activities Muslims consider some activities to be ‘haram’ or non-halal. When it comes to travelling, these are generally centred on requiring a family-friendly environment. As such, some Muslims would prefer to avoid facilities that serve alcohol, have discotheques or are adjacent to a gambling resort.

Another focus area according to Bahardeen are airports where a traveller spends a lot of time. Some of the Airlines do offer halal meals to travellers. Trains and eateries on highways between big cities are gearing up too. Attractions and malls in key cities apart from Muslim countries are yet to evolve but gradually coming along.

6. Recreational facilities and services with privacy A sub-segment of Muslim travellers are also looking for recreational facilities that provide privacy for males and females. These include swimming pools and gyms and beaches that provide areas for males and females to enjoy in privacy.

» Industry adaptation Having understood the key essentials of targeting a Muslim traveller, we now explore how much of the industry players have adapted to this new rising trend.

Below is a unanimous list of destinations which are going all out to target the Muslim traveller.

Turkey Turkey fits the bill in terms of all the facilities it offers to call itself Muslimfriendly. As per Cebi, “It was the demand that created the supply. This goes back to the end of the 1990s when the local tourist market was estimated at around 18-20 million travellers. They consisted of conservative families who were looking for a beach holiday with some facilities like halal food and dedicated facilities

TRAVEL TRENDS for ladies. This demand was recognised around the early 2000s, when some five or six properties focused on this segment. However, this trend just mushroomed and today we have around 100 such properties in Turkey.

There are some five-star halal Turkish resorts such as Angel’s Marmaris, Adin Beach Hotel and Adenya Beach Resort which have just the right facilities for Muslim travellers. They only serve halal food, serve no alcohol and have segregated facilities for women to swim in women-only pools.”

Malaysia Being a Muslim country, Malaysia offers multiple halal cuisine options as well as prayer facilities. In addition, travellers can also find Islamic events and festivals, Islamic tourism attractions and Islamic related studies for edu-tourism.

The Ministry of Tourism and Culture has set up an Islamic Tourism Centre (ITC) to work hand in hand with Tourism Malaysia to promote Discover Malaysia: Your Muslim-Friendly Destination. The authority is also promoting ‘Shariahcompliance’ to the hotel and restaurant premises in Malaysia. In addition, for a

hotel kitchen to be certified halal, the Department of Islamic Development (JAKIM) has determined that a hotel kitchen must have a halal executive a Malaysian citizen who has an Islamic educational background or obtains a

Halal Executive certificate or a certificate from a food handling course. With all these factors, the country welcomes an average of 5.5 million Muslims tourists yearly. Approximately about 20% of total arrivals to Malaysia.

Japan The Japan National Tourism Organisation (JNTO) has accelerated promotion for the Muslim market. A Japan has jumped from eighth to sixth on the list of non-OIC (Organisation of Islamic Cooperation) destinations in the GMTI 2017 rating. There is a ‘Japan Welcome Guide for Muslim Visitors’, which is available in English and Bahasa Indonesia, covering useful and practical information on mosques, hotels, restaurants and other Muslim-friendly facilities across Japan. In addition, Japan Tourism Agency, under Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT), Japan, has had a policy to support local areas that invest in Muslim friendly equipment and services for years. This has resulted in an increase of Muslim friendly facilities such as hotels and restaurants in Japan.

TRAVEL TRENDS South Korea Over 900,000 Muslim tourists visited the country in 2015, up by 20% f rom 2014 which was at 750,000. Some of the initiatives conducted to tap into the Muslim traveller segment include Halal Restaurant Week, an annual event to promote Muslimf riendly restaurants not only for Muslims but also for tourists globally. This event was held for the second time f rom September to October 2017, hosted by the Korea Tourism Organisation (KTO) and attracted more than 100 Muslimf riendly restaurants around the country. There are currently about 130 Muslim-f riendly restaurants,

including 14 halal-certif ied ones, in South Korea and the f igure is expected to grow. The country also provides Muslim-f riendly restaurant guides and tourist maps which are available in English.

Australia Tourism Australia is specif ically targeting Muslim tourists with the visitor guide titled ‘Explore Australia f rom Unique Wildlife to Urban Wonders’ which enhances their travel experience in the destination.

This is a 68-page guidebook which completely focuses and helps Muslim travellers in discovering the best places to visit, shop, dine

and pray in Australia. To make more and more Muslim travellers aware, the guide has been distributed amongst travel agents and partners in the region. The guide highlights the nearest mosques and places to pray within each state and a list of the best halal dining experiences including Turkish, South Asian and Middle-Eastern influences which have Crescent Ratings. However, are travel companies or travel professionals really giving customers a true destination experience? The industry still depends primarily on brochures or maybe even websites. This is juxtaposed with advancing technologies which are encompassing practically every industry and the tourism industry is no exception. As it is their business to sell ‘experiences’ and dreams.

Today, Virtual Reality (VR) is evolving video content into 360-degree experiences that can be accessed on very low-cost VR equipment – a smart-phone and Google Cardboard can deliver a surprisingly realistic 3D experience to the user. More sophisticated hardware and software can improve these images, but cost and a low installed user base will need to improve before more brands make the substantial investments needed to further evolve VR.

Despite the small market currently, the travel industry should be a key driver of VR technology for commercial use, especially as it has always been an early adopter of new technologies. Offering customers’ novel ways of researching a destination will continue to grow in popularity. Currently, VR is in early adopter mode with high relative costs. The airline focus: Passengers at Terminal 8 of JFK Airport in New York could get an introduction to VR with an initiative f rom American and Westfeld Airlines as part of Facebook’s Virtual Reality Roadshow. “ Travellers are having an absolute blast participating in such a fascinating and enjoyable virtual reality experience,” said

American Airlines Managing Director, Mike McKanna. “We’re always on the lookout for new ways to entertain travellers, and taking part in Facebook’s virtual reality tour was too good to pass up.”

Qantas have been developing VR apps for the past two years, which enables potential visitors to experience Hamilton Island, Sydney and Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park.

The VR content has been created for all VR platforms, f rom Google Cardboard to Oculus Rift.

The level of investment being made illustrates that travel brands can see the long-term potential that VR could have for their overall prof itability.

Outside of the airlines an innovative approach is also possible once the traveller has arrived at the destination.

French company Timescope has begun installing units in Paris airports that can transport users to different time periods or experiences in the city. The Timescope units, which are mounted to the ground, can give users a 360 degree view of Paris in 1628. One of the units shows the Bastille in 1416 and 1798, and another unit displays variety of experiences in France. It is a small demonstration of the possibilities for enhancing tourists’ experiences, which can be extended and made more immersive when large numbers of consumers have smartphone devices.

At the moment, many of these initiatives are novel ideas using VR technology to speak to their curious clients. Still on a learning curve, the hotel sector does offer an indication of how VR could offer a practical proposition, which the tourism industry could leverage.

Best Western Hotels and Resorts have been leveraging the burgeoning VR technology. Guests now have an immersive 360-degree look into all of the company’s North American hotels.

Through the Best Western Virtual Reality Experience, guests are now able to view a virtual reality tour of nearly 2,000 properties. These videos are reinventing how guests view hotels and choose where to stay. Best Western is the f irst major company of its size and scale to

utilize this cutting-edge technology in this way, setting a new industry standard for how virtual reality can be used to enhance the consumer journey.

Theme parks have often harnessed new technologies to enhance the experiences of their patrons. Alton Towers Resort, for instance, is now using VR to augment its rides.

Galactica is the world’s f irst rollercoaster entirely customized for the full VR experience, transforming riders into astronauts and plunging them into outer space with a G force more powerful than a real rocket launch according to the company. For the tourism industry, the innovations at Alton Towers could serve the wider travel community, as more of the public will be exposed to VR technologies through the ride and become more comfortable with the experience.

Destination promotion: Department of Culture & Tourism – Abu Dhabi: The Department of

Culture & Tourism – Abu Dhabi adopted the concept of virtual reality in 2016. The destination introduced 360 degree videos into their online promotional strategies, particularly targeting YouTube and Facebook users. Last year, a number of virtual reality experiences were developed that were utilised at events, exhibitions and international roadshows.

The tourism authority has developed its own Abu Dhabi VR application that utilises Oculus Rift hardware (gaming PC, sensor and integrated headsets/headphones) in conjunction with a number of dedicated and custom-produced videos that highlight and promote various regions, locations and themes within Abu Dhabi. An enhanced 4D version of the VR app is also developed that has been integrated into a custom-built dune buggy incorporating extra sensory elements, such as movement and vibration in the seat and steering wheel of the buggy. And f inally, the ‘Abu Dhabi’ mobile app has a dedicated VR section called ‘Abu Dhabi 360’ that lets users view the VR videos using Samsung Gear VR, Google Cardboard viewer etc.

The concept of VR is super immersive and adds an extra dimension to traditional online and offline promotional methods.

It is now possible to virtually bring the user to the emirate of Abu Dhabi and expose them to the sights and sounds of all the different regions and attractions.

The authority has also developed other innovative activations, such as interactive touch screen tables that allow users to explore the emirate, build customisable itineraries and automatically generate personalized videos based on individual elements of the user’s selection.

The destination adopted the VR experience in a campaign executed with Discovery Channel, producing promotional material about Sharm El Sheikh, this campaign is live until March 2018. Virtual reality is also used on their website www.egypt. travel, showcasing the varied tourist destinations such as the Pyramids, Sphinx, White desert, Wadi Hetan among others.

Virtual Reality headsets and eyewear are used during participation in international trade fairs. The board has their own virtual reality application (visit Egypt) uploaded on Google play and App store. Finally, a game has also been developed titled ‘A trip inside the pyramid’.

The benef its of adopting this new technology is that it is the perfect way of bringing possible experiences to life. This technology enables the user (tourist) to interact with a location or attraction they might consider visiting, which in turn increases the appetite for Egypt.

Austria National Tourist Off ice: The concept of virtual reality has been adopted mainly for promoting the country via Video-Marketing in the sense of 360-degrees videos that can be used with Augmented Reality devices so that the user can actually experience a holiday in Austria (for example skiing, hiking, a boat trip on the Danube River).

Travelling with any medical condition can be a challenge and things magnify when it is a neurodegenerative disorder like Parkinson’s Disease (PD). Here is a look at how you could simplify travel for someone with PD.

VFS TASHEEL Imagine a beautiful snow-covered mountain with slight sunshine beaming sporadically across the horizon. At the peak of the Les Portes du Soleil, a major ski sports destination in the Alps, taking in a bird’s-eye view of the slope is Gity Bazargan. All geared up to ski, Gity was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2003 and today she is wheelchair bound. Despite this mobility challenge, she is determined to have fun and is excited to indulge in something called a ’Handiski’(a safe sit and ski experience).

“We call her Gritty Gity for her unwavering perseverance and positive attitude,” says her husband, Mark Bazargan. “Despite being wheelchair bound she has shown courage and enthusiasm to come for a skiing holiday in France with the family.”

Gity is an inspiration to many. To understand what must have gone through her mind and how the family planned and ensured a safe trip, let’s first start with what PD is and the set of challenges that come with it.

Discovery It was a rude shock - are the sentiments of Vonita Singh, a classical dancer turned movement coach. She explains her journey with the disease through her dad’s suffering. “When dad was diagnosed with Parkinson’s, we did not have much information on the disease.

I vaguely knew about some symptoms but failed to recognise them in my dad’s condition,” she says.

PD happens when the part of the brain (substantia nigra) that controls how a person moves his body is affected. In brief, our brain cells, with the help of a chemical called dopamine commands the body to move, feel and sense the surrounding. When these cells start dying and dopamine levels drop, the command is lost. As a result, the body movement becomes abrupt or slow in contrast to being agile as it used to be. This process happens so slowly that it may take years for symptoms to appear. And the fact that symptoms have started to appear means that a lot

of the damage has already been done.

And as yet there is no way to reverse this damage.

Vonita explains further, “Dad started showing a lot of motor and non-motor symptoms which are common in PD. He used to hallucinate and cry which we assumed to be a post-retirement depression. Stiffness and tremors made it difficult for him to even sign a document. He refused to travel, sometimes due to anxiety and other times due to embarrassment of his condition.”

The cause of PD is still unidentified.

Whilst there are a range of symptoms commonly associated with the disease, not every patient has them. Contrary to the belief that PD hits the elderly, there are cases where young individuals have been diagnosed with early-onset Parkinson’s. Since symptoms vary, each case is unique. The most common physical symptoms which may go unnoticed during the initial stages include: > Tremors in various parts of the body > Muscle stiffness > Inability to balance self > Slowness in movement > Low or slurred speech > Bladder dysfunction > Constipation In addition to the physical symptoms, non-motor symptoms including psychological ones can be attributed to PD (it was previously assumed that psychological symptoms were an aftereffect of the medication). A person with PD is likely to show change in behaviour, such as:

the sake of exercise but to alleviate the symptoms. In my dad’s case, we helped him with the smallest things such as to feed him, tie his shoe laces, push and pull him up the chair. When he refused to leave the house, we thought he needed some time to himself so we didn’t encourage him to go out and socialize.

These were our biggest mistakes.”

It is estimated that globally an average of 0.15 per cent of the population suffers from Parkinson’s. There are an estimated 4,250 cases in Dubai and potentially over 72,000 in the GCC

Vonita started a movement to bring positive change in the lives of people suffering from Parkinson’s. Starting off with just one subject in 2003, today the group has organically grown up to 50 people. The set-up is called Movement Mantra.

Today, Vonita is well-versed with most things to do with PD. Her personal experience has led her to a greater quest where she focuses on brining PD awareness to society by using one of the best resources she has - dance. Studying and researching deeper into the symptoms of PD, Vonita has put together a regime which could result in alleviating the physical and psychological symptoms in a patient if performed regularly. To master her art, she undertook a dance therapy programme in New York, called "Dance for PD", run by the Mark Morris Dance Group.

This is when on social media, Vonita came across a Dubai based subject, Gity, who at the time had just learned about her condition and was looking to connect with others dealing with the similar situation. In the summer of 2003, along with Gity, Vonita started a movement to bring positive change in the lives of people suffering f rom Parkinson’s and their caregivers. What began with these two has today organically grown to a group of up to 50. The set-up is called ‘Movement Mantra’.

The Doctor's Opinion with Dr Manio von Maravic A PD specialist doctor is the best person to advice on simplifying a journey for someone suffering from this disease.

GCAA (General Civil Aviation Authority Dubai UAE) accredited neurologist, Dr Manio von Maravic talks about the medical aspects of travelling with PD. Having 25 years of professional experience in treating neurological diseases such as PD, vertigo, back pain, sleep disorders, dementia, stroke, epilepsy and others, he has all the information to deal with this task.

» For someone suffering from PD, what are the things to keep in mind before making a travel plan?

First of all, we encourage PD patients to travel, because of the positive impact on mood and conf idence. But it is a bit of a challenge, as the normal routine cannot be maintained and changes may be stressful. Symptoms may worsen temporarily and an extra dose of medication may be needed.

Where do you want to go? Choose the destination carefully. The climate should be moderate and not too hot to prevent excessive sweating. Do the transport, accommodation and facilities at your destination meet your needs? What about accessibility, are there steps? Breakfast-buffet may be a problem if you use a stick and have to carry a tray. Are meals served? Is there a hospital at a reasonable distance?

Think of all possibilities so that you go prepared on your journey.

Valid health insurance that covers pre-existing diseases and includes repatriation in case of an emergency is also imperative to have before travelling.

» Are there any symptoms to watch for before travelling?

People with PD usually know their limitations very well. Some get blocked when they have to pass through something narrow (for example a doorframe) or while walking they suddenly may not be able to move (called “freezing”). This is very uncomfortable for the affected person and, if it happens frequently, the journey could become a nightmare.

Unsteadiness and the tendency to fall may increase the risk of trauma or fractures. Constipation is another issue. It is a very common symptom

usually manageable at home, but may get worse due to change of food and environment.

» Are there any specific travel tips for Hajj and Umrah pilgrims?

Health risks during Hajj & Umrah include communicable diseases like respiratory and gastrointestinal infections or non-communicable issues like heat stroke, trauma or deterioration of pre-existing diseases.

There are vaccination requirements available from the Saudi Embassy.

Although no specific restrictions for people with Parkinson’s exist, the patient´s condition in general should be assessed, before agreeing to the pilgrimage. The Hajj and Umrah service providers offer exclusive packages for elderly pilgrims or people with other special needs. These packages include accommodation close to Makkah and Madina and includes wheelchair assistance, if required.

In case of an emergency nearly everyone finds it difficult to react adequately in a foreign environment.

For PD patients it is even harder. On the website of the European Parkinson's Disease Association you can download and print an information sheet titled "I have Parkinson's. Please allow me time.

In case of emergency contact …" It is available in 25 different languages and you can keep it in your wallet while you are travelling.

Your neurologist will inform you about possible complications and risks and provide a medical certificate or letter that explains you have PD along with a list of medication you're taking. Furthermore, he can give detailed advice, such as how to overcome certain situations and advise when you may be allowed allowed to increase or reduce the dosage of the medication. He will check, if your medication is available at the destination, and if not provide alternatives. There also may be restrictions on taking your medication into the country. If you need vaccinations, ask the specialist, if these are compatible with your medications.

In the UAE, where can a traveller with PD look for medical advice before embarking on a journey?

It is advised that one should continue consultation with the same doctor who is aware of the patient’s history and ongoing treatment.

Neelam Kundal I recently travelled alone from Dubai to Chandigarh on a three-hour flight. Earlier I have travelled alone many times but this trip was different. It was my first solo trip after being diagnosed with PD. While booking the flight tickets, I had selected for wheelchair services. They carted me till my seat where I informed the airhostess of my condition. Throughout the journey the flight attendants took good care of me as they were aware of my special needs. I would suggest to anyone with PD and wishing to travel, to try to book a seat near the toilet. With PD you may need to use the toilet frequently. Also, keep the flight attendants aware of your condition.

Krishnamurthy Kumar I travelled to Calgary, Canada from Dubai a few weeks ago and my next trip is a 5-day cruise to Baja, Mexico.

Travelling long distance flights can be difficult for people with PD. For instance, the connecting flights might get tedious and sometimes during the transfer, airline staff fail to extend the required support. From my personal experience, I would like to suggest that always travel with a caregiver unless it is inevitable. At all times, have with you medicines required for the next 24 hours. Don't be shy to ask for a wheelchair. It will make your travel more convenient. And the fact that you were able to make a successful trip boosts your courage and confidence.

Applicants who have rescheduled and/or cancelled their appointment more than five times within seven days may schedule a new appointment immediately under the Lounge category for up to 14 days from the original appointment date.

In the case of a No Show, applicants who had an appointment previously but did not submit the application on the appointment date and did not cancel the appointment prior to the appointment date, may schedule a new appointment immediately under the Lounge category for up to seven days from the original appointment date.

Passport collection There are two ways of collecting the passport once the visa process is complete other than picking it up personally.

Authorize a representative or travel agent: A representative/travel agent may visit the Visa Services Centre as per the time and date indicated for passport collection. It is mandatory to present the original invoice and receipt along with an authorization letter signed by the applicant. The original invoice and receipt is provided at the time of application submission. Authorization letter is available in the “Download Forms” section under How to Apply on the website.

Courier: An applicant may opt for courier delivery service while scheduling an appointment or submitting the application.

The passport is couriered at the shipping address provided by the applicant.
