Editor's Letter

Welcome to Autumn – well nearly. Once those schools go back the speed with which we approach the end of the year will, once again, take you by surprise.

I always think there is so much to cram into the autumn. The calendar is littered with notable dates whether it’s Halloween, Bonfire Night, Festival of Light, The Great North Run, Blackpool Light Switch on, all milestones that tick off the weeks and months of autumn.

It’s a season I personally enjoy due to the change in colours that nature provides. It is certainly a season Debbie Daniels prefers and particularly enjoys dressing for (see page 22). With the collections already arriving she hasn’t been disappointed.

You will certainly feel the power this autumn with suiting and jackets a ‘must have’ purchase to update your wardrobe. You don’t have to be a high-flying executive to enjoy wearing a suit and that is mainly down to footwear as it has become more acceptable to wear sneakers with a suit. You can read more about the trends and new brands we have to offer later in the magazine.

We have got plenty of events in store for you to enjoy, with brand specific fashion shows to styling events to solve your fashion dilemmas. If we have your email you will hear about all our events or you can look on our website, Facebook and Instagram pages for updates.

Without you we wouldn’t be here and I want to give a heartfelt thank you for all your continuing loyalty and custom, it means a lot to me and the whole team.

Fashion escapism

The world can be a grim place. Wars are raging, momentous elections have taken place at home and abroad and climate change is a big global issue, but fashion escapes all of that. Rather than get political, fashion offers comfort, security, pleasure and escapism.

This season you can see that, in so many ways, within the collections. Cosy knits swaddle the wearer, building on the sense of safekeeping; sequins (for day or night) allow an element of fun, enjoyment and lightness; heritage fabrics take us to our weekend country house setting; and suiting and blazers give us a sense of control and power.

Fashion provides us with our own form of escapism, which starts with the designers creativity and works its way down the chain to the whole shopping experience and the garments being worn.

There is a great scene in The Devil Wears Prada where Miranda Priestly (played by Meryl Streep) quite directly explains to her new assistant, Andy Sachs (played by Anne Hathaway), the journey of a single item of clothing. That clip makes you appreciate what goes into an end product and how a single garment can offer such pleasure and escapism from the world out there.

Enjoy the new autumn collections.

Autumn trends

Heritage – Country House Chic

We’ve seen a glut of films and TV series set in some impressive country houses and estates and maybe that is where this seasons trend for country house chic has come from. We are not complaining as it gives us some incredible fabrics and designs in the collections. Rich chestnut browns and deep moss greens are perfect for this type of design with textures being added to the fabrics adding opulence.

Think Lady of the Manor rather than farm hand – this is country chic. Checks and tweeds without the itch and scratch of years gone by. You can pick out one piece as a nod to the trend or go full three piece trouser suit to fully embrace the country chic look.

Collars

Whether collars ever went out of fashion or whether designers have just put more emphasis on collars may be up for debate, but collars are trending this autumn.

The resurgence of jackets has helped, from classic lapels to mandarin styles, they are being made a feature. A contrast in fabric, a slightly broader silhouette, whatever it may be, the collar is starting to stand out.

It’s not all left to jackets though, with knitwear introducing super high funnel necks to keep us warm, or asymmetric lines that help frame the face and additional features such as buttons, jewels and colour contrasts all helping to make the simple collar the star.

Faux Fur

Who doesn’t like a little bit of luxury? Who doesn’t like the feeling of being wrapped up like you are being given a big bear hug? You can have all of those things with this season’s faux fur trend.

A good quality faux fur is super soft to the touch (imagine the softest teddy bear), lightweight, and often has a slight sheen, like a glossy coat on an animal. Best of all, a lot of them are washable.

Joseph Ribkoff has some fabulous faux fur coats, some reversible, so depending on your mood you can go for full on lux or paired down chic. If you are a little bit nervous about all out fur then try it in an accessory – your handbag could become your instant lapdog!

Muted Tones

Probably connected to the whole heritage, country chic trend, soft natural tones are in abundance this autumn. They offer a calming element after the colourful summer hues. Sandstone, silver greys and winter whites are colours that are a must for your wardrobe this autumn.

It is always good when a trend colour is one that is wearable no matter what your complexion. Natural, earthy colours suit most skin tones. All you need to do is to select the correct depth of colour within that palette.

The big plus with neutral tones is they can be used in virtually every item of clothing, whether it’s a jacket, a piece of knitwear or trousers. Bags and scarves also work well with these colours. The designers have set the tone, it’s up to you how to use it!

Western Boots

It looks like the western boot is here to stay for a little bit longer. And why not? They have got to be the most comfortable footwear, aside from sneakers. Sturdy underfoot with a strong sole, block heel to give a bit of height, without the pain, and they work with everything, from jeans to dresses.

The difference this season is that the western boot trend has embraced metallic tones for an even sharper look and design of the western boot has even made it into the print on some garments.

Who would have thought a silk shirt with pink western boot print could look so good!

New brands: Autumn 2024

In 2010 the Mos Mosh brand was born. Founder, Kim Hyldahl’s, first drawings were done on his kitchen table and consisted of a small collection of 7 pairs of jeans and trousers. From there, the collection grew, as did the following, from women who were looking for timeless wardrobe pieces that offer high quality, comfort and attention to detail. We are delighted to welcome this Danish brand into Anne Furbank and this season you will see a combination of tailored jackets, knitwear and blouses as well as the Mos Mosh jeans, which is where it all started.

Designed with heart, worn with passion, loved forever.

Mos Mosh

Sand

Since 1981, founder Soren Sand, has been creating a fashion brand with care and dedication. The care to source and use quality fabrics and the dedication to create a contemporary look in a very Scandinavian way.

From the beginning, Sand has been about creating wearable fashion, rooted in the Scandinavian design tradition and refined through a sense of style that comes from a deep understanding of quality.

The autumn collection showcases classic blazers with crisp shirts and super soft knitwear. It is to the point, extremely wearable and easy to love.

Bariloche

It is the perfect season to introduce this quality Spanish brand, which is known for its unique tweed jackets and chic shirts. They really embrace the country chic look, making classic pieces but adding intricate details to make them extra special. Velvet trims, embossed buttons and sharp lines all expertly crafted into these high-quality pieces. Based in Madrid they have been dressing women for over 30 years.

Quinton & Chadwick

Quinton Chadwick products are recognized for their unique colour combinations, their modern take on traditional patterns, the sustainability of their British production and the quality of their craftmanship.

Jess Quinton and Jane Chadwick set up their company 15 years ago, wanting to use British mills for both the yarn supply and the production of their knitwear accessories. Jess trained in knitwear at The Royal College of Art and

then worked for fashion house Missoni, so colour and pattern is part of her passion.

The company is based in Suffolk and the designs have definitely been influenced by the coast, with nods to the knitwear heritage of where the products are made.

We are delighted to stock their scarfs, hats and gloves for this autumn.

Brand profile

Luisa Cerano was launched in 1998 but it’s history goes way back as the brand’s parent company, the Hauber Group, a traditional textile dynasty in southern Germany, was founded in 1870 by Ferdinand Hauber.

The Hauber Group is now in its fifth generation as a family business, managed by brothers Walter and Jurgen Leuthe. It was their father, also Walter, who launched Luisa Cerano with the backing of 150 years of fashion expertise.

Vincent Frayssinet is the Sales Manager for the UK, Ireland and Australia and we found out more about his fashion journey.

How did you first get into fashion and who did you work for?

I first got into fashion through my studies. I have a Business Degree from a French School and we had to do an internship overseas for 3 months. I chose to come to London where I was an intern for a wholesaler in mens clubwear (It was the 90s!!!) – it was so much fun – they took me to all their trade shows in Cologne, Paris, Barcelona, Copenhagen etc. We were working hard and partying hard! We got on so well that they then offered me a job – I couldn’t say no! Coming from the south west of France, then moving to London was a dream!

So I finished my studies and moved straight to London!

Over the years I worked with Harvey Nichols, Nicole Farhi, Pringle of Scotland and Max Mara.

Have you always been in fashion or has there been life before fashion?

It has always been fashion but never in France funnily enough! I always had an interest in Fashion somehow, probably influenced by my mother who was and still is a very stylish woman.

How did your journey with Luisa Cerano start?

My collaboration with Luisa started just over 3 years ago. I was consulting at the time for other companies and I started a project with them and the rest is history as they say!

Did you know the brand?

I was aware of the brand of course as i was working for Italian competitors for many years, and we shared the same stockists in the UK.

What drew you to working for/with them?

I really liked the team back in Germany when we first met – it is a family owned business and it feels very human and friendly – which is important to me.

And of course the product is fantastic! The brand is currently on a journey and this is all very exciting –we are starting to collaborate with Artists – the latest collaboration with Monica Menez was truly special – she created a very edgy campaign for the brand and we also did an exclusive caspule collection. For AW24, we have exclusive TShirts with images shot by Monica – which I know you have in store already.

The owners are also very involved with the Arts in general and this really resonates with me – Luisa Cerano recently sponsored a major Modigliani exhibition in the Modern Art Gallery in Stuttgart. And in London, we showcase our collections in the PI Artwork Gallery.

What do you put their success down to?

The brand has been a huge success in Europe and also in the rest of the world (North America, Asia, Australia) for over 25 years. I personally think the creative team have the ability to design wearable clothes, in trend but not too crazy, that women love wearing season after season. Recently the brand strategy has been to offer more premium collections with more natural fabrics like silk, cotton, linen, wools, cashmere. We use a lot of Italian fabrics suppliers and I think the end consumer can see the high quality in every Luisa Cerano garment.

Oh and needless to say the cut of our trousers and tailoring is just magnificent!

Do you personally have a passion for design and quality clothing?

I do indeed, otherwise I would not be doing what I do –but I think in this day and age, it’s about being clever and investing in high quality pieces that you know you can wear for several years and mix them up with something a little less expensive perhaps. You cannot beat a beautifully cut trouser suit by Luisa Cerano for example.

Is fashion part of your everyday life both in and out of work?

Gosh no! Outside work, there is no fashion talk anymore! Arts yes, you will find me in museums, exhibitions or theatres at the weekend. If not, I’ll be strolling some of the great food markets in London, and trying out new restaurants.

Who do you admire in the fashion world?

Yves Saint Laurent. The first tuxedo suit for women –That was something! The world is a better place with women wearing trousers! (Pun intended).

If you could choose five essential items from the AW24 Luisa Cerano collection what would they be?

It would have to be our Punto Milano Tuxedo suit – the double breasted with knotted buttons – this is really an investment piece! I think your customers will love it too.

Then I also love all our Faux Fur jackets and gilet this season – they are a lot of fun and very on trend.

And as you well know, I am also a big fan of our wool and cashmere double face outerwear every season. I think everyone should have one in their wardrobe! They are timeless and the one you selected for your customers this season is just devine!

We also have some very special knitwear for winter, with embellishment and rhinestones, which I am sure your customers will love.

Autumn Weddings

The early part of the year tends to come under the ‘Wedding Season’ banner, as many couples hope for sunnier days for their wedding. However, autumn weddings are on the increase with stately homes and rural retreats becoming the venue of choice. Hundreds of estates, halls, manor houses and castles are opening their doors as the perfect setting for a fairytale wedding.

With the whole event taking place in one venue it makes the organization of such an important day much easier. It also helps the mother of the bride/ groom and guests when it comes to dressing. They don’t need to worry about inclement weather and as such the brands have responded.

Fabric weights don’t change that much whatever time of year the wedding takes place. You may see autumnal colours coming through but you will still see chiffons, silks and crepe fabrics.

The eclectic choice of wedding venues has just made dressing for a wedding a whole lot easier.

Braving The Elements In Style

Don’t spoil your outfit with an anorak! There is a time and place for an anorak but if you are going somewhere special in the winter, your outerwear must become part of the consideration.

Luckily for you, the trend for faux fur glam will certainly help this year. Wraps, capes, reversible coats look a lot more glamorous with a trim of faux fur.

Time To Shine

You don’t need to wait for a black-tie invitation to pop through your letterbox –the time to shine is right here, right now. Why keep sequins just for evening events when you can wear them during the day. Lurex is not just for evening dresses and satin is not only for after dark!

Aren’t we lucky to be living in a fashion age where anything goes and, with a little prompting from the designers, who give us the courage to harness a ‘Why Not?’ attitude, we can shine for all day, every day.

If you are little nervous then start with a sequin trimmed piece of knitwear like the tank top from Kinross or a satin shirt from Herzens which will cross over from day to evening. Try a metallic jacket which will add that bit of shine to something super practical. Then, when the party season really gets going, you can go out sequins with a full blown sequin trouser suit, courtesy of Joseph Ribkoff.

The Emu

Comfort is a big factor when it come to shoes and, with the growing trend for sneakers in the last few years, our feet have become used to that comfort. Emu’s claim is that they were comfortable before comfortable became cool! When the brand was launched it was all about the product, the durability and the comfort. They wanted to use sustainable products that would last, be practical and have style – without being a slave to fashion trends.

Sheepskin and wool are their go to products – natural and sustainable – and that has been at the core of Emu values since the very beginning. They don’t shy away from being innovative but they maintain the integrity of craftmanship when producing their range.

This autumn/winter sees new designs, from the Hotham boot with a Vibram sole, for those who need a sturdy winter boot, to the Stinger Micro for those just looking for their feet to be wrapped in a cocoon of sheepskin.

All are waterproof as well as being warm and will see you through this winter and many winters to come.

Ask any of the team in the shop and they will be able to personally vouch for them!

Way

Introducing Vibram Soles

Vibram is the world leader in the development and manufacturing of high-performance rubber soles for outdoor and leisure activities, workwear, fashion, orthopaedics and correction. For over 80 years the yellow octagon that symbolises Vibram has been synonymous worldwide with quality, performance, safety and innovation in the footwear industry. With its international headquarters in Albizzate (Varese) Italy, Vibram produces more than 40 million soles every year, dedicates over one million kilometres to testing, is present in 120 countries and has manufacturing, research and representation bases in the USA, China, Japan, Brazil and Italy.

Community Work

Hogl has linked up with a school in Preston, Lancashire and created a ‘Shoe Lace Club’. By donating samples from past collections they have helped the school set up the club to help teach the pupils how to tie laces. What a great way to give something back to the community and give new life and purpose to some old samples.

Autumn Clothes Why I Prefer

Over the years I have come to realise what suits my shape, my height, my bad bits, my good bits. That comes with age and experience of course. But most of all I’ve come to understand why I prefer autumn clothes.

It goes so much further than colours, weights, textures of summer clothes. I believe it’s much deeper rooted than that. It’s to do with upbringing, my Celtic heritage, that feeling of “hygge”. (Define hygge : cosy and contented mood evoked by comfort).

Remember that clothes and how you dress are an expression of self and an outward extension of your personality and your mood on any particular day.

My stylish little mum always used to hang out her clothes/outfit for work, the night before. I simply can’t

Share With Us

do that. What I choose to wear each day depends very much on, how I’ve slept, what the weather is doing, my mood etc. I only come to realise all of those contributing factors whilst I’m out early morning, walking my dog.

Of course it’s very much to do with colours too. Or in my case, not so much colour but more neutral, camels, sludgy greens, charcoals & blacks. I do love to see colour in the shop and people are drawn to bright colours but personally I prefer to fade into the background and dress more quietly. That is very much to do with my personality. In a large gathering I would be in the background, watching, listening and observing and definitely not being centre stage. Heaven forbid!

Added to this is the fabrics and the richness of texture in autumn clothes. I love layers as I always feel chilly, and I prefer to cover up. I have a real passion for coats and jackets so I look forward to chilly days when I can wear them. That’s also connected to structure of course and I do favour the structure of suiting & simple clear-cut lines. It most certainly gives me the confidence to do my job and feel that I am in control.

I would add that my favourite time of year is also autumn, particularly the month of October. I know full well that’s all to do with closing the blinds in the evening, sitting down to a tasty warming meal ( I love to cook) and I suppose it’s the cosiness and homely feel that season brings along with the prospect of Christmas on the horizon. Christmas brings all my children home and we are together for at least a week, cooking, eating, drinking and enjoying each other’s company. And after all, isn’t that what life is about!

Thank you to all of you that joined our July challenge and sent us your photos in your Anne Furbank outfits. We love seeing you in the clothes bought at Anne Furbank whether it’s on holiday, walking the dog, lunch with friends or at a wedding. It brings context and life to the clothes we pack up for you in the shop. You can keep sharing by emailing shop@annefurbank.com or via our Facebook page or Instagram. Simply search for Anne Furbank.
