Library & Learning Services Overview of Library & Learning Services Teams Semester 1 2020/21 Our aim is to support you and your students to make the best use of our services, to support work or studies whether on campus or at a distance.

We have a number of teams to help you make the most of everything we have on offer.

The Academic Engagement Team The Academic Engagement Team work closely with colleagues throughout the University to strengthen the relationships between academic staff and Library & Learning Services.

We offer advice, information and support across the full range of services we provide, including: • • • • • • •

Library services.

Learning technologies – Blackboard and tools for teaching and learning.

UniSkills – digital/information literacy and academic writing for your students.

Specialist support for students with SpLD. Research support.

The Collections and Archive Team The Collections and Archive Team manage the acquisition of resources and subscriptions while providing access to books, eJournals and eBooks.

Using the Reading Lists Online service, you can ensure that your students have access to the resources they need.

The team also: • Provide a digitisation service to create pdfs of journal articles and book chapters under the terms of the Copyright Licensing Agency's (CLA) HE license.

• Manage inter-library loans through the You Want It We Get It service.

• Manage the content within the Library Catalogue and Discover More.

Archive Within Catalyst you will find the Edge Hill University Archive. The Edge Hill University archive is the repository for the print and visual history of the institution from its foundation. You can download the University Archive Catalogue to view a list of many of the materials held within the archive.

The Learning Technology Development Team The Learning Technology Development Team support the use of the suite of tools known as Learning Edge and aim to develop the effective use of technology for teaching and learning.

Learning Technology Development Officers: • • • •

Work with you to structure and build your courses.

Offer innovative ways to use technology to enhance your teaching practice.

Offer help and advice around inclusive digital practice.

Engage in projects to develop, introduce and support new tools for teaching and learning.

• The Team test and promote systems and offer ideas for practice.

Within Learning Edge: • Blackboard is the online learning environment used across Edge Hill University and provides staff and students with access to a range of tools for communication, collaboration, and assessment. Each taught module at Edge Hill will have a related course Blackboard.

• Blackboard Collaborate online classroom tool.

• Panopto video recording system that you can use to record lectures, demonstrations, assessment guideline or recap videos and record student practical’s or presentations.

• Qwickly attendance to record/track student attendance in Blackboard.

• Turnitin for assignment submission and grading.

The Student Engagement Team

The Student Engagement Team provide UniSkills, the Universities academic skills support programme for students.

The team provide support for academic writing, information literacy and general study skills for students. The resources and support can be embedded at a module, programme or course level to ensure that specific skills and resources are shared with a particular group of students.

A range of embedded sessions on the core academic skills of academic writing, information literacy and referencing can also be delivered within your curriculum.

Students can access support through our UniSkills webinars, 1:1 appointment service and via our online toolkits. See the UniSkills website for further information.

UniSkills webinars are run virtually throughout the year on a wide range of topics including: • • • • • •

Academic writing, referencing, paraphrasing Finding academic information Academic resilience Conducting a literature review Exam preparation Presentation skills

TechSkills is a package of workshops, online resources and face to face support to help students develop and enhance their technology skills including poster design, creating blogs and websites.

Disability Support

Disability support in Leaning Services includes the SpLD Support Team and the Learning Support Service.

The SpLD Support Team supports students who have dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia or ADHD through the delivery of one-to-one specialist study skills support. The team will guide and support students through the process of applying for DSA funding if appropriate.

The Learning Support Service works closely with the SpLD Support Team and the Inclusion Team in Student Services to provide supplementary support to all disabled students.

• The teams are happy to provide support and advice to staff and students around Assistive Technologies available at the university.

• Can advise you around indicators of SpLD in writing and good practice when working with students with disabilities.

• Staff may also find it useful to explore the help and advice around inclusive digital practice from the Learning Technology Development Team.

Research Support Team

Our Research Support Team provides support and assistance to staff engaged in research and research students.

Our dedicated Research Support Team can provide support with developing digital and information literacy skills, Open Access, REF compliance and depositing in the Edge Hill Research Archive.

The team offer advice, workshops and one-to-one support including: • • • • • • • • •

Pure Information Repository Researcher development Writing for research Publication Open Access Figshare REF compliance Bibliometric analysis Information/learning resources

My Staff Development

The My Staff Development offer is a collaborative initiative between Human Resources and Library & Learning Services.

This new combined offer aims to ensure that your learning is easy to navigate and in one central place.

Depending on your job role and personal interests, you can choose to explore numerous pathways to further support your development. These pathways consist of: • • • • • • •

Grow My Skills Professional Excellence Leadership & Management Wellbeing Preparing For My Future Learning, Teaching & Research Connect, Chat & Collaborate

These pathways have been specifically designed to allow you to enhance your knowledge in that area in more depth, encouraging you to complete the sessions offered and utilise the online guides and resources available.

IT and AV Support Team The IT and AV Support Team provide support for using IT and audio visual technologies in teaching spaces across the University and provide the Media Production filming and editing service for University staff.

Training is available for staff and students in the use of classroom technologies such as interactive whiteboards and Panopto.

Support is available if you are having technical difficulty with: • the projector image not displaying correctly • distorted sound or no sound from a device or microphone • the classroom computer not logging in or functioning correctly • your own devices not connecting properly to the audio-visual system • the audio-visual control panel not working correctly • recording your lecture using the Panopto software • printers in IT labs that have jammed or run out of paper The Classroom Support Service can be called via the Learning Services Helpline: dial extension 7800 and choose option 2 for Classroom AV Support. If you are calling from your mobile or an off-site location, please use the external Learning Services Helpline number 01695 650800.

The Classroom Support Service is available 8am to 6pm Monday to Friday during term time and 8.45am to 5pm outside term time. Support is also available during University open events including Open Days/Evenings and Applicant Visit Days.

Media Production is part of the IT and AV Support Team and provides a filming consultation and planning, video shoot and postproduction editing service to University staff. Help and Support for your students Students can access specialist help and support for disabilities, SpLD (Specific Learning Difficulties), subject specific and academic skills along with general library or Student Services and Careers queries at the helpdesk on the ground floor of Catalyst.

The Helpdesk is usually open 8am–8pm on weekdays and 10am–6pm at weekends.

This is subject to change owing to social distancing measures, so the best way to contact us is via email or live chat.
