What people all over the world heard from the lips of John Stott for more than six decades after his earliest theological training at Ridley Hall was the faithful presentation of God’s Word, thoughtfully and persuasively engaged with the challenges, needs and realities of the contemporary world.

Ridley Hall, Cambridge, is naming a new auditorium in memory of its highly distinguished alumnus

Tens of thousands of us have reason to be grateful for the life and witness of John Stott. Through his leadership, pastoring, speaking, writing, and in his prayers, he has influenced and helped shape our lives.

As World War II drew to a close, a young university graduate arrived at Ridley Hall to prepare for his long life’s work.

Throughout his time at Ridley, his passion for the Scriptures, for rigorous study and for helping others grow in faith were abundantly evident. A leader from the outset, he stayed on an extra term as Senior Student to see in a new Principal.

We encourage you to join us by giving to this significant memorial that will shape new generations of leaders at the seminary that helped lay the foundations for his extraordinary ministry.

Ordained in 1945, he joined the staff of All Souls’ Church, Langham Place, London, thus beginning more than sixty years of faithful ministry based with the same congregation. His was a long-term strategy to raise up new generations of Christian leaders, both in his own parish and far beyond, and to bring new confidence and depth to evangelical Christianity.

A teacher, evangelist,writer and ground-breaking leader,

his vision for the global church took him to every continent.

He invested himself in raising up men and women inspired by ‘radical discipleship’ and ‘balanced, biblical Christianity’.

Through the years he established numerous farsighted initiatives, and his ministry continues to multiply today through the international work of the Langham Partnership.

John Stott last visited Ridley Hall in 2006 as part of the college’s 125th anniversary celebrations, and not long before he ended his public ministry. On that occasion he lectured on The Paradoxes of Preaching, and then preached at the College Communion Service. His text that evening is a fitting epitaph to his life’s work: “We proclaim Jesus, admonishing and teaching everyone with wisdom, so that we may present everyone perfect in Christ” (Colossians. 1:28).

A few weeks before John Stott’s death in 2011, Ridley Hall received planning permission for a new building designed to enhance significantly our ability to prepare and enrich leaders, both lay and ordained.

Ridley’s passion is that we develop, in Cambridge, one of the foremost hubs of theological education serving the global church.

The jewel in the crown of the new £10 million ($15.5million) building will be a large, airy pavilion-style auditorium, a setting for learning, worship, and growing in faith that will shape the college’s life for decades to come. Ridley Hall is privileged to announce that this auditorium will be named in memory of the late John R. W. Stott, one of Ridley’s most distinguished sons.
