Principal’s Welcome Message It has been another extremely busy half term with a whole range of highlights. I have been particularly impressed with our Year 11 students who, this term received their mock results and have now thoroughly committed themselves to a range of interventions, revision sessions and other forms of support in preparation for their summer exams. I’m sure you would have seen the wonderful write up in the local press, along with many photos and positive comments on our social media and website. Additionally this term we have received our pupil premium report http://www.trfyia.org.uk/pupil-premium/ which identifies how we are raising standards amongst our most vulnerable students and praises the new way we are quality assuring our work across the school. Concord Book Awards

Drop Down Day

On Tuesday 8th March the YIA Library Crew attended the concord book awards, hosted at the Bristol and Bath Science Park.

On the 7th March we held a Dropdown day, where all students were off timetable and took part in lessons and activities linked to out SMSC Themes “Some people are Ambitious” and “Some people are not Bullies”.

Accelerated Readers Some Year 7 & Year 8 students have decided to run a gardening project, in the hope to encourage and improve their reading skills.

They recently visited Kemps garden centre, who showed them around and offered advice, and even donated some seeds and books.

They are hoping to raise some money to help fund their project.

Some of the workshops included:  First Aid training  Study skills  PSHE - E Safety, Antisocial behaviour and relationships  Careers  A play by “Chelsea’s choice” around child sexual exploitation Year 10 and Year 11 also took part in a two hour revision skills session run by The Life Skills Company, which showed them tools to use to help to revise.

Each Year 11 student was issued with a revision bag, which included:  Pens/highlighters  Revision cards  Revision timetables  Post it notes  Some motivational thoughts and some treats for when they have been working really hard.

______________________ Guild Ambassadors A big Thank-You to our students from Pegasus and Griffin Guilds, who helped serve refreshments to both staff and parents at our recent parents evenings.

This was welcomed and greatly appreciated by all.

Biometrics When students return after Easter, we will be adopting the cashless system across the school.

We are now in receipt of most signed permission forms, with most students having had their print taken. We understand there are some outstanding permissions, if this is the case your child will be issued with a four digit pin.

This is an informal chance to have a cup of tea and to ask any questions that you may have.

These surgeries run on the first day back following each holiday.

Dates: 11th April 4pm – 7pm 6th June 4pm – 7pm ________________________ Academy Absence If your child is to be absent from the Academy, it must be reported for each day. Should your child have sickness or diarrhoea then we operate a 24 hours from the last episode rule.

Passport to Year 11 Prom The Year 11 Prom has now been booked for Thursday 7th July at 7:00pm. It will be held at the Mercure Grange Hotel in Winterbourne.

For Further information please contact Miss Goodridge As is the case every year, Year 11 students are not guaranteed a place at the end of year prom. It is organised by the Academy as a celebration of their hard work and good behavior.

So, students must ensure they adhere to the following expectations for a space at this year’s memorable event: • No disciplinary stage • No serious disciplinary sanctions (isolation/exclusion) • Significant reduction in number of detentions (if appropriate) • Significant improvement in number of positives (if appropriate) • 96% attendance in their remaining time at the Academy. __________________________ Academy Parking Please ensure that when dropping off and collecting your child from the academy, that you use the drop off bay, or park in a designated parking space. Sports Round Up

Head Girls of Sixth Form Year 12 Head Girl – Sydney-Leigh Bell (left) My name is Sydney-Leigh Bell and I have recently been appointed the head of year 12 for the Cotswold Edge Sixth Form. My role is primarily to be a voice for students, to help them if they have a problem within the sixth form and see if I’m able to help in any way.

Also to occasionally hear suggestions and ideas about the improvement of the sixth form from the prefects. But I can also help any possible future year 12 students who have questions or worries about the sixth form, by providing advice to help with their decision. I have already spoken with some year 11 students who are feeling slightly undecided with their choice between our sixth form or another college. I look forward to speaking with my fellow year 12 students to make the sixth form the best environment we can.

Year 13 Head Girl – Maria Hill (right) Hi my name is Maria Hill and I am the Student head of year 13. I am very excited to be involved with this role and help in any way I can. If anyone has something they would like me to talk to the head of year about let me know and I will take your thoughts into consideration and make a decision based on the majority vote. Currently I am trying to find something that year 13 can do for a leaving celebration once everyone has finished school. Here’s a little bit about me for anyone who may be interested, my studies include health and social care and applied biology then later this year I plan on going to University to study Adult Nursing. Well done to all the boys involved in the league fixtures this season.

Each year group played league fixtures against Abbeywood, Brimsham Green and Chipping Sodbury. The team of the season goes to the year 8 team, led by Mr Britton. They progressed to the knockout stages, following wins against Brimsham Green and Chipping Sodbury.

The year 11 team finished their last ever fixtures with a great 5 -1 win against Abbeywood.

The year 10 and 9 leaders have excelled in their support and officiating of Football and Tag rugby competitions for year 5 and 6 students, officiating games and running the results tables with outstanding efficiency for over 300 students.

Miss Parkhouse has started a new Trampolining club on a Tuesday after school, which has been well attend ed, all students are welcome, please see Miss Parkhouse.

We wish Kirsten Owen every success as she has been selected to represent Great Britain in the Acrobatic World Age Group Competition in Putian (China) at the end of March. We will look forward to hearing all about her performance and China when she returns.

Silver and Bronze Medals

Congratulations to Trinity in Lion Guild, who entered the Yate Library Poetry competition - ‘Let’s Slam’ on 13th Feb 2016. Trinity had to write 3 poems about personal experiences and emotions.

One Judge commented ‘how emotional the poems made them feel’.

Kelsey Williams (pictured left) and Grace Leppard (picture right) both competed in the Cardiff Martial Arts tournament on the 7th Feb, and also the English Championships in Exeter on the 27th February.

‘Fallen Angel’ Do you see those stars in the sky?

Well, do you know who they are?

They’re fallen angels.

The angels who just weren’t strong enough.

You’ll be one sometime, Me too.

We all will.

But only if we’re true.

True to ourselves, And true to others.

Maybe if we believe.

It might happen sooner.

But there is no need to be afraid.

This is why we’re alive.

To become angels, Like the ones in the sky.

In Cardiff Kelsey fought in the red belt/black tag category and was awarded Silver in sparring and silver in patterns. Grace also fought in the red/black belt tag category and was awarded bronze in sparring and silver in patterns.

In Exeter Kelsey was awarded Gold Medal for Sparring, and Grace received a Silver Medal in Patterns and Gold in Sparring, making her English Champion for under 16 girls.

Well done to Kelsey and Grace!

We have been really pleased with the way that the vast majority of our students have complied with the academy’s uniform policy, this academic year.

When worn correctly our YIA uniform looks extremely smart and this reflects positively on our reputation within the wider community.

For the small number of students who repeatedly choose to wear their uniform incorrectly around the school, we will be introducing additional uniform detentions for those we have to ask more than twice in the same day, to correct their uniform.

Reminders:  Shirts to be tucked in at all times  Ties should be worn at a sensible length  Skirts to be worn at a sensible length, No Lycra  Black Leather Shoes – No Canvas  Blazers are compulsory, jumpers are optional After Easter we will be banning hooded sweatshirts from being worn to the Academy and not allow them to be worn at break or lunchtime. Whilst we recognize the need for a coat on a cold day we would ask you that hooded tops are left at home. If these tops are worn, there will be 20 minute uniform detention issued with the Hooded Top being left at reception for collection at the end of the day.
