About the Choreographers

SENA A. ATSUGAH is currently on study leave from the University of Ghana and a PhD candidate in Dance at Temple University in Philadelphia, USA under the Fulbright scholarship program. She is the instructor for Introduction to African Diasporic Dance and Neo-Traditional West African dance at the Boyer Collage of Music and Dance. She is also an adjunct instructor at Rider University in Lawrenceville, New Jersey. Sena obtained her Bachelor and Master of Fine Arts Degrees from the University of Ghana in 2008 and 20015 respectively. In other to gain more insight in dance and for that matter contemporary dance, she took part in the maiden edition of the project Engagement Feminine in 2009 at CDC - La Termitiere in Ouagadougou, Burkina – Faso. Fortunately, she was part of the four ladies selected for a residency for the project dans un s’y mettre, a quartet and Ecoute ma musique, a solo both choreographed by the company Auguste – Bienvenue which were both performed in Ouagadougou and Bobo-Dioulasso. The same project had the opportunity to tour in Bordeaux in France and in Yale University in the United States. In 20011, she had the opportunity to work with the choreographer Valerie Riviere of the company Paul les Oiseaux where she was part of the trio chambre Noire which was performed in Bordeaux and at the festival Dialogues de corps in 2012 in Ouagadougou, Burkina – Faso. In 2015, I was invited by the company August – Bienvenue to create a solo piece entitled Alone! Which was performed at Alliance Française d’ Accra and at the In-Out dance festival in Burkina Faso. In 2016, she had the opportunity to work with the Bamboo centre where she co-choreographed their maiden Theatre Heritage Series dubbed wogbejeke. In 2017 she was selected to be part of the workshop, The March at Ecole de Sable in Senegal under the tutorship of Germaine Acogny. She has also participated in the Framewalk art exchange program both in Ghana and Germany. She was privileged to work with refugees from Mali and the Northern part of Burkina – Faso and perform Gbei?! a solo performance at the 2021 edition of Dialogues de corps festival in Ouagadougou. Sena has presented papers, artist talk and movement workshops and performances in the 2023 ACDA Northeast Reginal Conference at Montclair, New Jersey, West African Dance: The Un-Taught at the University of Illinois in Champaign, the 2021 Collegium for African Diaspora Dance, the 2021 Tanec Praha International festival in Prague, the Dialogues de corps Festival in Burkina-Faso, and the Nikaala Festival in Togo. Because of her interest in community work, Sena is currently a volunteer with the African Diasporan Dance and Drumming community program in Philadelphia. She is also the artistic director of the Ti-fali Organization in Ghana where I work with girls and women on socio-cultural issues.

Her research interest is focused on exploring women’s bodies in the Yeve Dance-Drumming Traditions among the Anlo-Ewes of Ghana. She is interested in the embodied ancestral knowledge and spirituality embedded in dance forms among the Anlo-Ewes of Ghana and how such experiences can be explored for contemporary dance creation.

JOHN "COMIX" BARRELLA – Street Dance Educator, Choreographer, Performer, Consultant & Company Director. John Barrella’s work in film & dance is based around street dance culture. His work utilizes a range of the arts with techniques largely based within locking, popping, b-boy, and hip hop. John has been a featured dancer in music videos “HSKT” by Tenin and “Get Away” By Alissia. Other works include a presentation for Tedx: Chaos, Halftime shows for the NY Knicks, NYC Breakers’ Battle of the Boroughs reunion and much more. As a choreographer, John’s work has been presented internationally. His unique approach to movement has been placed on dancers in countless schools, programs & teams in and out of the United States.

At the age of 14, John was accepted into the "School of the Arts” in East Brunswick, NJ where he began his high school and college years learning modern dance and ballet from a variety of instructors and master teachers. Rounding out his early training, John participated in courses on human anatomy, improvisational techniques, childhood education, choreography composition, musical theatre and theatre. From his early teen years, John has studied under various hip hop artists and was recruited into WildStyle dance company where he learned his core hip hop techniques. He gained appreciation for street styles with glimpses into technique for house dance, waacking and dancehall. Furthering his training, John continues to study under master and pioneering hip hop artists. Notable influences on his work include Tom Mckie, Spex, Brian Green, Bev Brown, Jazzy J, Sekou, Pavan Thimmiah and more.

John is owner/director of dance company “The Redef Movement”, established in 2007. His company presents work both in a range of hip hop and professional dance atmospheres, most frequently presented throughout NJ, NY and Philadelphia. Their comedy based work “Stupid Humans” is a satire on the performing arts, often utilizing live shows or dance films to create humorous takes on common elements of the dance and performance world. In addition to his duties as a company director, John is an adjunct professor for hip hop at Rider University and has spent time on numerous boards for the arts.

In recent years, John has developed a curriculum and program that trains teachers in hip hop terminology and technique, applying it to class structure. This program, “Essentials for Dance Education” has been implemented in classrooms around the world and has offered countless teachers a look into his own method of instruction. John's classes and events are designed to teach aspiring dancers the fundamentals of street & hip hop dance as a freestyle art and techniques to master choreography. His goals are to inspire people to be artists and push themselves creatively and positively both in and outside of dance.

CHRISTINE COLOSIMO, BFA Dance, Rutgers University, MA Dance Education, Columbia University, PhD in Dance Studies Candidate, Temple University, is a dancer, choreographer, and dance professor. Christine has performed and produced her choreography in New York, New Jersey, Philadelphia, and Canada. She is a Laban Certified Movement Analyst and completed her training at the Laban Institute in New York City. Christine is currently working on a book about the life and work of American modern dancer, Erick Hawkins.

LANEY ENGELHARD has been involved in the dance community for over 30 plus years. She graduated from the Washington Academy of Performing Arts school, trained on scholarship at Pacific Northwest

Ballet School, The Rock School of Pennsylvania Ballet, and Lou Conte Dance Studio. Laney's professional career includes dancing for companies such as Oregon Ballet Theater, Lustig Dance Theatre, American Repertory Ballet, and Terpsicorps dance Theatre. She has performed in Radio City Christmas spectacular, guested for Hubbard street Dance Chicago, and worked with choreographer Trey McIntyre On Michael Curry's production of "Spirits".

As a choreographer, Laney has created many works for companies and schools nationally. She has created pieces for professional companies like American Repertory Ballet, Lustig Dance Theatre, Princeton’s Body Hype ensemble, Rider Dances, ComeUnity, the Outlet Dance Project, Collaborative Arts Motion New Dance Works, and Ballet Northwest. Laney has trained and coached many dancers throughout the tristate area who have continued on to college dance programs and professionally. Laney is also currently an Adjunct Professor at Rider University teaching ballet.

JENNIFER GLADNEY, choreographer, summa cum laude Rider ‘06 is an adjunct professor at Rider where she earned a double major in Elementary Education and Dance and a minor in Early Childhood Education. She previously was on the faculty at the Princeton Ballet School from 2005 -2020 and was a company dancer with the American Repertory Ballet. Gladney is currently the Children`s Ballet Specialist on the faculty of Martin Center for Dance, and an adjunct professor at Mercer County Community College in the dance department. During the day she is a PreK teacher for Saint Ann School. She has been part of Rider Dances since its inception in 2005 and was the first senior honors student to choreograph, Cross Phases, for this event. She loves being an alumni of Rider and continuing to create each spring for Rider Dances to see a new generation of Rider Dancers is always inspiring to her works at Rider. She is proud to have watched the dance department grow from under a dozen dancers to its current enrollment and vast programs.

DANIELLE MONDI is a dancer, choreographer and educator. She received a BFA in Dance from Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers University, and made a promise to herself to live the dream of being a dancer and perform in NYC. She performed with Tangerine Dance, Marie Alonzo Snyder and with Joyce King/ JKing Dance Company in NYC. Her favorite accomplishment was performing internationally at the High Fest Performing Arts Festival in Yerevan, Armenia with the JKing Dance Company. She is currently a full time Elementary Creative Movement Educator in Franklin Township Public Schools spreading her passion for dance to students ages Pre-k through 5th grade as well as the resident choreographer for New Jersey Repertory Theatre, a children’s theater company. Combining dance and mindfulness she received her 200HR RYT Yoga Certificate which led her into currently continuing her study in the Clinical and Mental Health Counseling Masters Program with a concentration in Dance Movement Therapy. “Never Give Up”

JESSICA RODRIGUEZ has been teaching Latin dance for over 25 years and was one of the pioneers in building the Philadelphia Salsa community. Over the course of her dance career, her mission to make Latin dance more accessible to a broader audience led her to get involved in community outreach, work with local school districts and eventually teach at Rider bringing Latin dance, and Latin culture, to higher education.

About Production and Administrative Team

LEANDRA ACOSTA, ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT (she/her), is a graduate of Rider University with degrees in dance performance and arts administration. During her time performing at Rider, she was awarded both the Dance Merit Scholarship and Mildred S. Hawkins Dance Scholarship and helped adopt the Dance Mentorship Program. She is grateful to have had the opportunity to work with so many fantastic choreographers during her time performing at Rider including: Kate Ladenheim, Randy James of 10 Hairy Legs, Angela Cusumano, Merli Guerra of Luminarium Dance, Jennifer Gladney, Robson Alves, Lynn Neuman of Artichoke Dance, and Ryan Davis. She was recently featured as a choreographer for the 2023 Senior Dance Capstone performance, Acknowledgements. In her role as Associate Director, Leandra creates programs for and manages the social media pages for the Department of Performing Arts and Westminster Choir College.

JAMEL BAKER, PRODUCTION STAGE MANAGER, received his BS in Speech Communication from Millersville University. Jamel is based in Philadelphia and has stage managed for companies both local and nationally. Some of his past credits include: The Choice, Bearded Ladies Cabaret, Sunset Baby, The Lydie Breeze Trilogy, Warplay, Boycott Esther, Pass Over, Rockaby, and Fool For Love. Jamel is currently the Lead Producer at Passage Theatre Company and serves on the board of Directors Gathering.

BUCK LINTON, DIRECTOR OF PRODUCTION MANAGEMENT/TECHNICAL DIRECTOR. Earning his MFA in Scenography and Technical Design (Virginia Tech), Buck joined Rider University as its Technical Director in 2012 and became the Director of Production Management in 2022. He professionally produced more than 200 productions with such venues as The Kennedy Center, Paper Mill Playhouse, Manhattan Theatre Club, Seattle Repertory Theatre, Berkeley Repertory Theatre, La Jolla Playhouse and McCarter Theatre. Selected works include Travesties, Sleeping Beauty Wakes, Take Flight, Herringbone, Lookingglass Alice and A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Falstaff, Die Zauberflöte, Pelléas et Mélisande, Dialogues des Carmélites, La Clemenza di Tito, Oreste, Sunjata Kamalenya, The Odyssey Experience, Die Fledermaus, Rigoletto, Turandot, Chicago, EDDA (Ping Chong & Sequentia Ensemble, international tour). Since 2012, he has produced more than 100 productions for Rider University’s College of Arts and Sciences in the performing arts.

TODD LOYD, LIGHTING DESIGNER, is the lighting director for Rider University’s Department of Performing Arts. He supervises the lighting for every performance that the department produces in addition to mentoring several students that assist in designing, hanging, focusing, and programming the lighting for each show. At Rider he has designed over 30 productions including plays, musicals, dance recitals, cabarets, and operas. Some of the highlights include Kiss Me, Kate, Clean Slate: A World Premiere Musical, The One-Act Play That Goes Wrong, Urinetown, Cabaret, Polaroid Stories, Rider Dances: Moving in Our Community, Pippin, Bright Star, Hair, Heathers The Musical, The Theory of Relativity, Once On This Island, She Kills Monsters, Our Town, A Chorus Line and Metamorphoses. Other selected professional projects include Rock of Ages and Baskerville: A Sherlock Holmes Mystery at Forestburgh Playhouse, Clean Slate: A World Premiere Musical and The Gun Show at Passage Theatre, and Journey to Oz with the Children’s Theatre of Charlotte and Experiential Theater Company

SAMUEL STEPHENSON, COORDINATOR OF PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT (he/him/his), received his Bachelor of Arts degrees in English Literature and Music from Wabash College, graduating magna cum

laude under a full-ride Lilly Scholarship. As a Joseph Flummerfelt Scholar, he received his Master of Music in Choral Conducting with distinction from Westminster Choir College. Samuel has performed with many choirs across the world. He toured with the Wabash College Glee Club internationally to Taiwan and organized and managed the renowned Choral Institute at Oxford, a summer program at the University of Oxford for inspiring conductors to work with leading figures in the choral world. He has performed with The Same Stream, whose recordings can be found on all major music services, and at the Weiwuying National Center for the Arts as part of the opera chorus for Verdi’s La Traviata. Most recently, Samuel conducted Morten Lauridsen’s Mid-Winter Songs with the Westminster Choir in concert at Washington D.C. He currently works as the Performance Management Coordinator at Rider University and Music Director at St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church in Warminster, PA.

ROBIN I. SHANE, COSTUME DESIGN MENTOR is an Assistant Professor of Theatre in the Department of Performing Arts at Rider University. Favorite designs at Rider include Cabaret, Polaroid Stories, Pippin, and many Rider Dance concerts. Recent professional credits include The Pillowman and In The Next Room, or, The Vibrator Play at the Hedgerow Theatre in Media, PA and OK Trenton at the Passage Theatre in Trenton, NJ. Robin has designed costumes regionally and nationally at such varied theatre as The New Victory Theatre, Berkeley Rep, The Yale Rep, The Hedgerow, Theatre Exile, Philadelphia Artists’ Collective, EgoPo, Passage Theater, Shakespeare Theater of NJ, The National Constitution Center, The Revision Theater, the Jean Cocteau Repertory Theater, Soho Rep and The Harrisburg Opera. Robin holds an MFA from the Tisch School of the Arts at NYU and a BA in Theater and Psychology from Wesleyan University.

Congratulations to the Senior Dancers!

KANIAH ‘KEKE’ BROWNE ’24 is a senior Dance Performance Major with a Minor in Entrepreneurship. Keke has performed in Rider Dances and Dance Day at Rider. She is currently teaching at Ms. Cece’s School of Dance Arts located in Lansdowne, PA. She is also currently on the Rider Dance Team. After graduation, she plans on opening multiple dance studios, while still educating the youth on dance education in dance studios. She also plans on enrolling in cosmetology school to continue her love of beauty.

VICTORIA FIGON ’24 is graduating as a Communications Major and a Dance Minor. Her plans include continuing her studies in the hopes of receiving a Master’s Degree in Digital and Strategic Communication. She also plans on auditioning to be an Eagles Cheerleader as well as auditioning for various Contemporary Dance Programs. She hopes to teach dance in the future and to someday share her passion for dance with the next generation of dancers. She was seen previously on the Rider stage in last semester’s Fall Student Dance Concert. “I am so grateful for all of the knowledge and support I have gained throughout my experience at Rider.”

MEGYN KUKULKA ‘24 is an Arts & Entertainment Industries Management major with a minor in dance. This is her second time performing in Rider Dances and she performed in the Fall Student Dance Concert this past fall. Outside of Rider, Megyn is a member of Redef Movement under John Barrella. After graduation she plans to pursue a career in the live entertainment industry and hopes to continue dancing on the side.

ARIANNA MCMORRIS ’24 is a Senior Musical Theatre Major with a Minor in Dance. Rider credits include The Prom, Cabaret, Love and Information, It's a Wonderful Life. Some professional and Community credits include Something Rotten (ft. Dancer), Mamma Mia (Tanya), Clue (Miss Scarlet), Pippin (ft. Dancer/Dance Captain), Suessical (Bird Girl) and Legally Blonde (Margot). After graduation she plans to get her graduate degree in Education while continuing her passion for dance and musical theatre.

AMANDA PESCATORE ’24 is graduating with a B.A. in Dance Performance and a Minor in Psychology. She was last seen on the Rider stage in the Fall Student Dance Concert, Rider Dances ‘21, ‘23, and regularly performs and choreographs for the Rider Dance Ensemble. During her time at Rider she completed an internship with the Walt Disney World Company and completed an Arts Study Abroad Trip. She is currently working on completing her capstone which will be presented at the end of the semester. She currently teaches ballet and tap at Talk of The Town Dance Studio. After graduation she plans to continue teaching, auditioning, and will be choreographing Mean Girls The Musical at Cumberland Players Playhouse this summer.

ANIKY SALIMA ’24 is a senior double major in Dance Performance and Acting for Film, Television, and Theatre. During her time at Rider, Salima has performed in Rider University’s annual dance showcase: Rider Dances, and Dance Day. Salima also works as a choreographer, creating pieces for dance studios in NYC/New Jersey.

MARISSA STELLATO ’24 will be graduating in May with her BA in Dance Performance and a Minor in English Writing. A native New Yorker, marissa has grown up surrounded by music and dance. At Rider, she has choreographed and danced for the Rider Dance Ensemble, Fall Student Concert, and danced in previous Rider Dances shows. She was a guest artist with Luminarium Dance Company, and performed in Florence, Italy this past summer with fellow dance and theater students. She is also a member of the Rider dance Team, Rider Dance Ensemble, and Spectrum. After college, she will continue the audition process in NYC, and would like to choreograph for school musicals. Marissa is a true motivator, inspiring classmates and friends to discover the rhythm within themselves. She believes that dance is not just about the steps but also about the shared moments, the laughter, and the freedom found in movement.
