DIVINUM MYSTERIUM
Hymn of Aurelius Prudentius (fl. Late 4th-c.)
James McCarthy Poem of John Milton (1608-1674)
“On the Morning of Christ's Nativity” (excerpt)
Westminster Chapel Choir
But peaceful was the night, Wherein the Prince of Light His reign of peace upon the earth began: The winds with wonder whist, Smoothly the waters kist, Whispering new joys to the mild ocean, Who now hath quite forgot to rave, While birds of calm sit brooding on the charmed wave. The stars with deep amaze Stand fix'd in steadfast gaze, Bending one way their precious influence, And will not take their flight, For all the morning light, Or Lucifer that often warn'd them thence; But in their glimmering orbs did glow, Until their Lord himself bespake, and bid them go.
CAROL IN PROCESSION:
Lo! He Comes with Clouds Descending* HEMSLEY Thomas Olivers (1725-1799) arr. John Rutter Hymn of Charles Wesley (1707-1788)
Lo! He comes with clouds descending, Once for favored sinners slain; Thousand, thousand saints attending Swell the triumph of His train: Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! God appears on Earth to reign.
Every eye shall now behold Him, Robed in glorious majesty; Those who pray and kneel before Him, Longing, waiting faithfully; Deeply wailing, deeply wailing, deeply wailing, Shall the true Messiah see.
Yea, amen! Let all adore Thee, High on Thine eternal throne; Savior, take the power and glory, Claim the kingdom for Thine own: O, come quickly; O, come quickly; O, come quickly. Alleluia! Come, Lord, come.

O magnum mysterium, et admirabile sacramentum, ut animalia viderent Dominum natum, jacentem in praesepio!
Beata Virgo, cujus viscera meruerunt portare Dominum Christum. Alleluia!
O great mystery, and wonderful sacrament, that animals should see the newborn Lord, lying in a manger! Blessed virgin, whose womb was worthy to bear the Lord [Jesus] Christ. Alleluia!

See dat babe in de lowly manger, He gon' take all my sin away. He gon' reign wit my God in glory
One of dese days, yes one of dese days.
He was born of de Virgin Mary
To bring peace to a weary lan’.
He come down from de God in heaven, Oh, behol’ de Son of Man.
Was no room in de inn, dey tol’ him, An’ dey sent my Lawd away. He was wrapped in swaddlin’ clothes
An’ He was born in a manger hay.
Oh, come behol’ de Baby Jesus, See dat Baby, see dat Baby, Oh behol’ de newborn King.
See dat Babe, oh, see my Lawd
One of dese days, yes one of dese days. One of dese days, O yes He gon’ reign, One of dese days.

MEDITATION:
Christmas 1945 Michael J. Diorio ‘00 Poem of James Agee (1909-1955)
Westminster Symphonic Choir
Once more as in the ancient morning, The slow beasts, the fierce newborn cry; And, in the heart the dreadful warning: Is it I?
All each heart holds of love, resolves Once more today in angry grief, Enduring courage; and dissolves In unbelief.
The Magi’s gifts are subtle bribes: The shepherds worship clock and wage: In rattling arms, roared diatribes, Wakes the new Age.
And, even now, at the town gate, Welcomed by many, fought by few, The clangor grows of Herod's hate In the morning’s blue.
And, in the straw, they hear, and stay. All that is brave and innocent, all that is love, reborn today, Is its time spent?
Where shall He flee, whose force is naught? Where lies that Egypt which sufficed of old, Now that each man is wrought Herod, and Christ?
CAROL:
It Came Upon the Midnight Clear* CAROL Edmund Sears (1810-1876) Hymn of Richard Storrs Willis (1819-1900)
It came upon the midnight clear, That glorious song of old, From angels bending near the earth
To touch their harps of gold: "Peace on the earth, good will to men, From heaven's all-gracious King."
The world in solemn stillness lay, To hear the angels sing.
Still through the cloven skies they come With peaceful wings unfurled, And still their heavenly music floats
O'er all the weary world; Above its sad and lowly plains They bend on hovering wing, And ever o'er its Babel sounds
The blessed angels sing.
For lo! The days are hastening on, By prophet seen of old, When with the ever-circling years Shall come the time foretold When peace shall over all the earth Its ancient splendors fling, And the whole world send back the song Which now the angels sing.

What Sweeter Music
John Rutter
Poem of Robert Herrick (1591–1675)
Westminster Symphonic Choir
What sweeter music can we bring Than a carol, for to sing
The birth of this our heavenly King? Awake the voice! Awake the string!
Dark and dull night, fly hence away, And give the honor to this day That sees December turned to May.
Why does the chilling winter's morn Smile, like a field beset with corn?
Or smell like a meadow newly shorn Thus on the sudden? Come and see The cause, why things thus fragrant be:
‘Tis He is born, whose quickening birth Gives life and lustre, public mirth, To heaven and the under-Earth.
We see Him come, and know Him ours, Who, with His sunshine and His showers, Turns all the patient ground to flowers.
From Hesperides (1648)
The darling of the world is come, And fit it is, we find a room To welcome Him
The nobler part
Of all the house here, is the heart, Which we will give Him; and bequeath This holly, and this ivy wreath, To do Him honour; who's our King, And Lord of all this reveling. What sweeter music can we bring Than a carol, for to sing
The birth of this our Heavenly King?
Holy Innocents
Judith Weir
Poem of Christina Rossetti (1830-1894)
Westminster Chapel Choir
Sleep, little Baby, sleep; The holy Angels love thee, And guard thy bed, and keep A blessed watch above thee. No spirit can come near Nor evil beast to harm thee: Sleep, Sweet, devoid of fear Where nothing need alarm thee.
The Love which doth not sleep, The eternal Arms surround thee: The Shepherd of the sheep In perfect love hath found thee. Sleep through the holy night, Christ-kept from snare and sorrow, Until thou wake to light And love and warmth to-morrow.
Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern
Kile Smith
Hymn of Philipp Nicolai (1556-1608)
The Westminster Choir
How beautifully the morning star shines full of grace and truth from the Lord, the sweet root of Jesse!
Son David of Jacob's tribe, my king and my bridegroom, you possess my heart, lovely, friendly, beautiful and glorious, great and honest, rich in gifts, high and very magnificently raised.
CAROL:
Hark! The Herald Angels Sing*
Hark! The herald angels sing Glory to the new-born King; Peace on earth and mercy mild, God and sinners reconciled: Joyful all ye nations rise, Join the triumph of the skies, With the angelic host proclaim, Christ is born in Bethlehem!
Refrain: Hark! The herald angels sing Glory to the new-born King!
Christ, by highest heaven adored, Christ, the everlasting Lord, Late in time behold Him come Offspring of a virgin’s womb: Veiled in flesh the Godhead see, Hail the incarnate Deity!
Pleased as man with man to dwell, Jesus, our Emmanuel.
Refrain
Strum the strings in Cythara and let the sweet music resound with joy, that I may live with Infant Jesus, my beautiful bridegroom, in constant love.
Sing, jump, rejoice, triumph, give thanks to the Lord; great is the King of Glory.
How heartily glad I am, that my treasure is Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. He'll win me at his price into Paradise; I clap my hands. Amen, Amen, come, you beautiful crown of joy, do not stay long; I am longing for yours.
MENDELSSOHN Felix Mendelssohn (1809 - 1947) arr. David Willcocks (1919 - 2015) Hymn of Charles Wesley (1707 - 1788)
Hail the heaven-born Prince of Peace!
Hail the Son of Righteousness!
Light and life to all he brings, Risen with healing in his wings; Mild he lays his glory by, Born that we no more may die, Born to raise us from the earth, Born to give us second birth.

I Wonder as I Wander
John Jacob Niles (1892 - 1980) arr. Steve Pilkington Carol of Appalachia
All Choirs
I wonder as I wander, out under the sky, how Jesus the Savior did come for to die for poor ord’n’ry people like you and like I. I wonder as I wander, out under the sky.
When Mary birthed Jesus, ‘twas in a cow's stall with wise men and farmers and shepherds and all. But high from God’s heaven a star's light did fall, and the promise of the ages it then did recall.
If Jesus had wanted any wee thing, a star in the sky, or a bird on a wing, or all of God's angels in heaven to sing, he surely could have had it, 'cause he was the king
CAROL:
Silent Night* STILLE NACHT Carol of Franz Gruber (1787-1863)
Silent night, holy night, All is calm, all is bright Round yon virgin mother and child!
Holy Infant so tender and mild,
Sleep in heavenly peace, Sleep in heavenly peace.
Silent night, holy night, Shepards quake, at the sight, Glories stream from heaven afar Heav’nly hosts sing Alleluia Christ the Savior is born, Christ the Savior is born.
Silent night, holy night, Son of God, love's pure light Radiant beams from Thy holy face, With the dawn of redeeming grace, Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth, Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth.

Where Shepherds Lately Knelt
Carl Schalk Poem of Jaroslav Vajda (1919-2008)
All Choirs
Where shepherds lately knelt and kept the angel's word, I come in half belief, A pilgrim strangely stirred; But there is room and welcome there for me.
In that unlikely place I find him as they said: Sweet, newborn babe, how frail, And in a manger bed: A still small voice to cry one day for me. How should I not have known Isaiah would be there, His prophecies fulfilled? With pounding heart, I stare: A Child, a Son, The Prince of Peace for me.
Can I, will I forget how love was born, and burned its way into my heart: Unasked, unforced, unearned, To die, to live, and not alone for me
