NANAIMO:

A breath of fresh air

Nanaimo means different things to different people. As a destination Nanaimo is gaining recognition around the world for its location and natural beauty. People who live here know that Nanaimo is a unique city home to many incredible and engaging people, exciting things to do and see, and a city which has a lot of development potential. We are fortunate to live on Vancouver Island in general and Nanaimo in particular. In this time of global crisis, we enjoy a smaller population, here in Nanaimo, and a separation from the many of the troubles we see in larger centers across Canada. There are plenty of outdoor spaces and many ways to enjoy the ocean, the mountains, and the city. Provided we are smart and observe physical distancing and mask-wearing we can continue to live our lives as close to normal as possible even during the worst global pandemic in over 100 years.

Here are a few ideas for the month of September to help you get out and enjoy this incredible little piece of paradise.

It is, of course, important to recognize that all the things we suggest here require you to observe physical distancing and mask-wearing. We do not need to tell you because the signs and rules are posted clearly in most public locations. So please enjoy yourselves but be conscientious and courteous towards your fellow citizens. 1. Take a stroll on the harbourfront walkway There are so many little eateries and shops that not only have their doors open but gladly welcome your business. Elizabeth’s lingerie on Front St is a short hop from the harbourfront walkway. While on the walkway look for your favourite gelato or cup of

coffee. Do not forget Nanaimo’s best souvenir and gift shop: Newfoundland to Nanaimo. 2. Grab a frisbee or a ball and spend a day at Mafeo Sutton park. This large park in downtown Nanaimo offers many enjoyable opportunities for outdoor activities for the young and the elderly alike. The views are inspiring and the smells and sounds of the city make this a hugely enjoyable way to spend any day. 3. Check out the new stores and restaurants at Port Place There are new restaurants and shops for every taste. You can even play a hand of blackjack at the casino or try your luck at slots. Across the street you can walk to Cameron island or head over to the Firehouse grill and sample their award-winning sushi or a variety of other fare and local spirits. 4. Go down to the Helijet terminal. It is so fun to take the kids down and watch a helicopter take off and land. Make a video

and send it to your friends and family. There is a newly paved access road and plenty of parking. Make your next trip to Vancouver one to remember. Once you have been pampered by Helijet it is hard to travel any other way. 5. Shop Commercial Drive Shop, eat, have a gelato‌repeat. So many fun shops and great people watching too. Maybe there is no night market for now but do not let that stop you from stopping at Fascinating Rhythm or Flying Fish, to name a couple, and check out all the goodies. Be green, ride your bike and use one of the many secure places to lock your bike up while you roam. 6. Walk around Old City Quarter. An exciting and appealing part of the downtown Nanaimo core the Old City Quarter has a great combination of quirk, upscale and utilitarian places to shop. Make sure you follow the signs to more shops sometimes around corners of little alleyways where you would least expect.

Do you have a favourite activity? Go to our Website www.whatsondigest.com and submit your event or send us an email and share your love for Nanaimo: one of the best places on Earth.

KOOL TOYS FOR “KIDS” FROM 1 TO 92 It’s September and time for school to begin! It may be starting a bit later than usual, but that’s okay. There are so many things to think about when school starts up: how will my child cope with everything that is happening, will they be able to deal with all the changes in their school, do I feel comfortable sending my child back to their school? One of the things we can help you with is providing educational books that will help your child learn, whether you send them back to school or decide to homeschool them. From School Zone Books, we have some wonderful ‘Big’ books and learning tablets ($14.99 - $17.99) for Preschool to Grade 2 with categories to help them learn and have fun at the same time. Chalkboard Publishing has Canadian Curriculum Advantage ($17.99) for children grade 1-6 that covers everything they will need to learn during the school year including math, language arts, social studies, science, etc. If you want just single subject books like math or language arts, we have many more choices for you. Perhaps your child is going back to school and needs a new backpack, lunch kit and accessories to go with. We have a nice selection of those in store also. Whether it’s sharks, cars, mermaids or butterflies, we can supply you with a matching set! Do you know we have washable children’s face masks? They fit ages 6-12 with assorted patterns on them from puppies to di-

nosaurs! What better way to get your child ready to attend their new class than with new lunch items and fun new face masks. Whatever you decide for your child and their new school year, you are doing what is best for them. We are all working towards the goal of exterminating Covid-19. In time, we shall succeed and until then we are all in this together. Stay safe and healthy!
