Apple Lore, and fruits of the harvest

According to ancient Greek mythology, the god Zeus held a wedding banquet in honor of Peteus and Thetis, and many of the gods and goddesses were invited. However, the goddess Eris was omitted from the guest list, for she was after all, the Goddess of Discord. Not one to be snubbed, she came to the celebration anyway, and brought with her a solid gold apple to be presented to the most beautiful woman in attendance. The goddesses, Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite, immediately stepped forward to claim the prize, and it therefore fell to Zeus to decide who should receive it. Yet Zeus knew when to delegate authority, and passed the decision to a Trojan mortal named Paris.

In what may have been the world’s first (mythical) beauty contest, Paris decided on Aphrodite because she’d prom-

ised to use her powers to give him the world’s most beautiful (mortal) woman, Helen of Troy. Aphrodite kept her word, but unfortunately Helen was already married to the Greek king Menelaus, who as one might imagine wasn’t pleased. And thus it was that the Apple of Discord is said to have caused the Trojan War. September marks the beginning of the local apple harvest, and the start of the autumn season. Before long tourists will descend on Apple Valley to take advantage of what the orchards have to offer, yet it’s likely that few have ever considered the historical significance of the humble apple, or its incorporation into folklore, legends, and fairy tales, religious illustrations, music, business logos, and even commonly used expressions.

For centuries the apple tree has been depicted by artists in their renderings of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, which early on gave the fruit its “forbidden” reputation. The poisoned apple in the German fairy tale of Snow White, first published in 1812, didn’t help the apple’s reputation either.

There’s also the lesser known yarn of William Tell, who is arrested for failing to show proper respect to a self-important nobleman. As punishment, he’s forced to shoot an apple off his son’s head from fifty feet using a bow and arrow. Tell is successful, and then kills the nobleman with a second arrow.

There are also several versions of a legend about a king’s garden, in the center of which grew a tree that produced golden apples.

Then there’s the historical figure, Sir Isaac Newton, a real person who lived from 1643 to 1727, who is said to have “discovered” gravity while sitting under an apple tree where a piece of fruit dropped on his head. While the facts of the story may be in question, it’s true that Newton was a mathematical genius known for his “laws of motion.”

Another man of legend associated with apples was John Chapman, (1774 – 1845), more commonly known as Johnny Appleseed, who roamed the American countryside planting thousands of apple trees. He’s often depicted wearing a pot on his head for a hat, and carrying a bag of apple seeds. There’s even a museum dedicated to him in Urbana, Ohio.

Songwriters have been putting the apple to music for

centuries. Two well known melodies made popular by the Andrews Sisters during WWII are “I’ll be With You In Apple Blossom Time,” and “Don’t Sit Under The Apple Tree (With Anyone Else But Me.”) Greenville, R.I., was once home to the undisputed “king” of apple growers, Thomas K. Winsor, whose massive apple orchards once covered the land now occupied by Maplewood Estates off Austin Avenue. T.K.’s business not only sold apples locally, but shipped them cross-country and world wide, which was quite an accomplishment in a time before standard refrigeration.

And there’s a reason why Smithfield is known as “Apple Valley,” for at one time dozens of orchards covered the local landscape, but today that number has dwindled to a mere handful.

As a point of fact, most 18th and 19th century farms had apple trees, and our colonial forefathers are known to have drunk copious amounts of hard cider, apple-jack, and apple brandy, for it was usually safer than drinking water, which before the days of modern purification systems often contained a variety of harmful microbes. Thus it might be true that “an apple a day keeps the doctor away.”

It’s also interesting to note that there are literally thousands of varieties of apples, but not all are as pleasing to the eye, or as sweet tasting, as those grown for commercial sale today.

EVERY PRECIOUS MOMENT school teachers as gifts. How this tradition got started is unclear.

Some say it dates to a time when teachers in poor rural communities received partial payment in the way of food supplies, while others say it’s because the apple is a symbol of knowledge.

“As sure as God made little green apples,” we’ve incorporated apple lingo into some common expressions. For example, someone might say you’re “the apple of their eye,” but a person who gives false flattery is said to be an “apple polisher.” That doesn’t necessarily mean they’re a “bad apple,” or “rotten to the core.” It simply may be a case of “the apple not falling far from the tree.”

Something can be “as American as apple pie,” and “one bad apple doesn’t spoil the whole barrel.”

A person who “upsets the apple cart,” might hope for a “second bite at the apple.”

When arguing, one might compare “apples to oranges,” and conclude with “how do you like them apples?”

Yet apples aren’t the only fruit connected to common expressions. Some people have been known to “go bananas,” while others have ruled “banana republics.”

At work, we may get a “plum assignment,” and it’s all “peaches and cream;” but if we don’t, we get “sour grapes,”and are reminded that “life isn’t always a bowl of cherries.”

Some get along like “two peas in a pod,” and fog can be as “thick as pea soup.”

Someone in trouble is said to be “in a pickle,” but maybe they don’t “give a fig,” and remain “cool as a cucumber.”

A person can “extend an olive branch,” “dangle a carrot,” be a “couch potato,” or just “full of beans.” And don’t even get me started on meats and dairy.

Now one final thought. Did you know that there are more apple orchards in Smithfield, than in New York City, a.k.a, “The Big Apple?” Just sayin’.

The Tax Assessor’s Office

Ask Smithfield Tax Assessor Drew Manlove what the function of his office is, and the answer rolls off his tongue as if it’s never far from his mind: “The primary purpose of my office,” he says, “is to ensure fair and equitable taxation in the Town of Smithfield. It’s really that simple.”

He explains that Smithfield, like many communities, works on a system of “ad valorem” taxation. “This means that we’re taxed according to the value of our property – so there’s not a flat tax.” One of the main functions of his office is to make sure that the valuations the town uses are accurate, and “to try and make sure that you’re paying no more and no less than your fair share of the taxes.”

This is accomplished through property assessments. In Rhode Island properties are re-assessed every three years. Based on recent market activity, the assessors try to establish what each property in town is worth. This is currently underway, and next year’s tax bills will reflect the values that are now being determined. This year’s bills are based on the assessment that took place in 2015.

This year’s isn’t a “full revaluation,” where every property is visited. That type of revaluation takes place only every nine years.

“Most people should not expect a knock on the door,” Manlove says, noting that they’re most likely to visit properties that have recently sold to make sure they have accurate data.

One thing a revaluation doesn’t do, he says, is raise the overall amount of taxes the town, as a whole, pays. That’s a function of the

town budget, which is approved at the annual Financial Town Meeting.

“People often see these revaluations as a mechanism for the town to raise more tax money,” Manolve says. “That is not the purpose of these revaluations, nor is it the purpose of this office.

“My job is not to determine how much tax money is coming into the town, but to make sure that you’re paying just your little slice of the pie, and no more or no less than it’s fair for you to pay.”

To that end, taxpayers have the right to appeal their property valuations if they think they’re inaccurate. This opportunity is available each year (not just during revaluation years), and the appeal deadline is listed in the annual tax bill. Appeal applications are available online and in the office.

“I really relish the opportunity to go through the appeal process and to see what people are telling us,” Manlove says. “The main part of my job is to get these values right. So if we have something wrong, I want to know about it, and I want to make it right.”

The Tax Assessor’s Office also administers abatements and exemptions available to town residents.

“There are five primary property tax benefits that one can qualify for in the town,” Manlove says. Various benefits are available to senior citizens older than 65, veterans, the disabled, the blind, and residents who have historic stone walls that meet particular criteria.

“Our office is responsible for administering those exemptions,” Manlove says, though they’re not responsible for establishing or changing the rules.

“We take the rules that are outlined, and we’re responsible for administering them.”

He notes that, though the town has extensive data on property, they don’t have enough data on residents to notify them that they qualify for benefits. So it’s up to the residents to get the ball rolling.

“Once we have them through the doors,” Manlove says, “we relish the opportunity to help people through the process.”

Detailed information on benefits and appeals are available on the office’s website, as are downloadable forms to fill out.

The web site offers a wealth of other information, including a link to the Vision Associates database, which has extensive data on every property in town.

Manlove says that one of his goals is to subvert what he sees as negative expectations of the public when dealing with municipal and government services. He aims to do this by providing residents with clear information, and a positive, helpful attitude in the office.

“It’s important to me that it’s helpful, informational, and seeks to add clarity and transparency to the taxation process, and that it’s not one that’s combative, difficult, or argumentative,” he says. “The way our office interfaces with the public is of vital importance.”

Glocester: A Beautiful Terroir for Grape Growing

By Harry Anderson The chefs who prepared dinner for America’s governors at their last summer’s conference, held in Rhode Island, served Riesling, Pinot Noir, and Cabernet Sauvignon - made and bottled by Mulberry Vineyards - declared these wines to be “the best in the State.”

That’s high praise to a vintner who is just starting out in the wine-making business.

In fact, forty-year-old David Wright, along with his wife Melanie, have yet to plant a single grape-bearing vine on their property. Come next spring that will happen. Until then and when those vines produce their fruit, the Wrights will continue to depend largely upon grapes imported from Oregon, California, and Chile.

“There’s so, so much facing us,” David says. “But we keep our cool.”

Notwithstanding having three children under the age of five and full time jobs (he works as the IT guy at Bishop Hendricken High School and she is a dental hygienist), this young couple have made notable headway in morphing their 42.5 acres on Pound Road in Glocester into what David sees to have the potential of becoming Rhode Island’s third largest vineyard.

“If ten acres of vines yield about 27,000 bottles of wine,” David reckons, “then in time we’ll be corking more than 100,000 bottles!”

Earning a BS degree at URI where he majored in biological science and minored in entomology hardly prepared him for a career in wine-making, but it indicated his predilection for fact-finding and deductive reasoning, both of which bolstered his decision to become a vintner – a decision he made after

returning from a European sojourn in 1996 where he discovered the artistry of concocting vintage wine and the joy of tasting the pay-off of a job done well.

Certain rudiments of wine-making, however, must be learned before the artistry comes into play. And there are many for a would-be vintner to learn. Undaunted, David began by planting a few grape vines in his mother’s backyard in Warwick. He investigated established vineyards, doing stints as a laborer in some of them, and asked questions. He studied the literature of grape-growing and of fermenting the juice.

Growing up fatherless, David acquired his guiding mantra from his grandfather – a career Marine: “I don’t care what you do, but you better have skill!”

Ten or so years into what may be called an apprenticeship, he deduced that he had gathered a sufficiency of skills to launch a vineyard venture, and, lucking out in finding the historic 1730 Andrew Brown homestead in Chepachet for sale, purchased it in 2011.

“Glocester is a great place to grow grapes!” he gushes. “Its terroir [microclimate] is beautiful – the air, the warm days and cool nights, the soil, the pitch of the ground.”

Moreover, he adds that it is a “super supportive town” and for good measure that “you can see the stars at night!”

As of now, visitors to Mulberry Vineyards will find evidence of a nascent winery: stacks of fallen trees awaiting transport to a lumber mill; acres of cleared land; huge mounds of wood chips; a stonewall in the making along the front perimeter of the property; a spacious parking area. Overlooking it all, atop a knoll in the rear of the Brown homestead, sits a

smallish, weathered building – formerly a barn converted into a tasting room on the second level above the work room laden with oak barrels and the paraphernalia for wine making.

It is in that work room where David’s artistry as a vintner comes into play. The quality of a wine reflects its maker’s mix of yeast, enzymes, and nutrients among a host of other factors.

“It takes two weeks for the juice to ferment and about two years to finish,” David all too eagerly tells his visitors. Most critical in this process is the timing. As the juice nears the two-year point, he siphons through the barrel’s bunghole a sampling and must decide when the contents are just right to be bottled. “Sometimes I get lucky,” he humbly smiles.

Thus far, what he calls “luck” very well could be what his grandfather would call “skill.” For one thing, “People with allergies don’t react to our wine,” he says. For another, his Facebook account posts such praise as Abigail Small’s review: “Some of the best wine we have ever had! The owners are an absolute joy and the wine tastes better than any French, California, or Italian we have had!”

Such acclaim corroborates what the chefs who feted America’s Governors last summer had to say about Mulberry Vineyards’ product: “It’s Rhode Island’s best wine!”

Pet Therapy Is Not Just For The Dogs

For those who are not familiar with pet assisted therapy (PAT), or pet therapy, it is a willing and loving interaction between a credentialed family therapy pet, and a client, and the pet’s guardian as facilitator, with the purpose of achieving beneficial results such as, specific physical, social, cognitive, and emotional goals with patients. Studies have shown that physical contact with a pet provides many health benefits, such as lowering high blood pressure and improving survival rates for heart attack victims.

There is also evidence that simply petting an animal can cause the release of endorphins, chemicals in the body that suppress the pain response and elevate mood.

The enjoyment of animals as companions dates back many centuries, perhaps even to prehistoric times. The first known therapeutic use of animals started in 9th century Belgium, where care for farm animals has long been an important part of assisted living programs designed for people with disabilities. Around the world today, pet therapy has become more formally applied in a variety of therapeutic settings, including schools, libraries and prisons, as well as hospitals, hospices, nursing homes, social services, mental health programs and

outpatient care programs.

For Cynthia Vanaudenhove, her involvement in pet therapy began about 18 years ago when she fostered a dog from New England English Springer Spaniel Rescue. This dog, named Fallon, was her “springboard” into what she is doing now in the field of pet therapy.

Va n a u d e n h o v e adopted Fallon, and she knew right away from how people responded that there was something special about this springer spaniel.

“She was an amazing dog,” Vanaudenhove says. “Everyone loved her. She was a natural for pet therapy.”

So much so that Vanaudenhove started an independent pet therapy program at Zambarano Hospital in Burrillville.

A friend who was a nurse at Zambarano first suggested that Fallon would be perfect for pet therapy and encouraged Vanaudenhove to give it a try.

“I didn’t know much about pet therapy and any formal training requirements at that time,” Vanaudenhove says. “But I knew the value of a relationship with a pet and Zambarano welcomed me with open arms, and Fallon was tremendous. I learned quite a lot from her.”

Things took off for Vanaudenhove and Fallon from there.

This human-canine team grew so successfully and Vanaudenhove took on so many clients that it became overwhelming, even with Abigail, a second springer she began working with. In 2005 Vanaudenhove learned about the DJ Professional Pet Assisted Therapy Program at CCRI. It was developed and taught by a woman named Pearl Salloto. Vanaudenhove entered the program and graduated with her two springer spaniels.

“That made a huge difference in what I was offering,” Vanaudenhove says. “It was a marvelous experience. I learned more in Pearl’s classes than I think I ever could have learned in a lifetime of doing it on my own. From there I was able to construct a true professional PAT program, incorporating goals and goal assessment, as well as establishing my ethics and guidelines. I learned about safety and legal issues and so much more.”

Vanaudenhove and Salloto became close colleagues and friends, and Vanaudenhove was asked to come into the program to help teach. When Salloto retired in 2014, Vanaudenhove became the director of the DJ Professional Pet Assisted Therapy Program. Over the course of time, Vanaudenhove has observed how more and more people have come to understand what pet therapy is all about and the benefits that it can provide.

“Professionals are now coming to us, asking us to help them build their own programs for their clients by hiring a PAT team,” Vanaudenhove says. “Today, we have many professionals themselves coming into the DJ program who want to learn and incorporate what we teach and teach their own family pets into what they are doing. We have many retirees and people from all walks of life going through the program with their pets and realizing the joy of this profession.”

Once a team graduates from DJ program, that team is eligible for credentialing through Windwalker, a professional pet-assisted therapy organization that, among many other things, holds credentialed PAT teams to a high standard of practice and ethics including ensuring that pets are fully vaccinated and healthy. PAT teams carry liability insurance as well.

The credentialing process is something that everyone has to go through every three years so that standards are maintained.

One notable change is that the DJ program is switching venues from CCRI to Providence College this fall semester. The curriculum is a three course certificate program. The first course, a twelve week program called Introduction to Pet Assisted Therapy, is for the human part of the team, without the pet.

“It’s very in-depth, with emphasis on education for the human,” Vanaudenhove says. “We find this is really valuable and so do the professionals that come to us. Then course two, for the human and their pet, and this is where we focus on becoming a safe, beneficial team, actually working hands-on in a facility with your pet. And you are learning from experienced PAT facilitators.”

This part of the training is all done at Elmhurst Rehab in Providence. The final part of the program, course three, is an internship period done alongside a mentor which involves twenty hours of pet-assisted therapy prior to credentialing.

“There’s a lot in this program,” Vanaudenhove says. “But when you come out the other side you and your pet are fully prepared. You know what to expect and you can present and provide a professional program to any school, library, healthcare facility, or other agency. The programs that our graduates offer are very much in demand. We tailor our programs to meet clients’ needs through bonding and interactions with our pets.”

Today, in addition to teaching, Vanaudenhove still runs several of her own private pet-therapy programs. She has three Spinger Spaniels, a nine year old named Guinevere and fifteen month old named Hero, both of whom are credentialed therapy dogs. She has a third dog, Robbie, a rescue who is a bit fearful and would not be happy as a therapy dog, but is still a wonderful, loving pet at home.

“The number one ethic in our program is our pets are family and are our first responsibility,” Vanaudenhove says. “We are their advocates, their guardians, and we always want to make sure their needs are met first when we practice PAT, and that they are happy and safe. A dog that doesn’t like doing therapy work is going to be stressed, and a dog that is stressed is unhappy and is not going to bring the benefit to the client

Avoid Medicare Mistakes during the Annual Election Period

or Part D prescription drug plan, these plans change somewhat from year to year. Plan premiums, deductibles, co-pays, networks and benefits are all elements that insurance companies can and often do modify each year.

Don’t make the mistake of thinking “I’ll just keep what I have” because what you have might just change on you!

For people who may want to change their Medicare coverage, they can make a change during the Annual Election Period (“AEP”) which runs from October 15th until December 7th.

Any change you make during the AEP is effective on January 1st.

At Head Games Hair Salon, the owners, staff, and clientele are just as finely and tightly knit together as this hairstyle. Owned by best friends Jackie Pannone and Melissa Duva, this sanctuary of beauty has become more than just a job—it’s a family affair.

Both Pannone and Duva have been in the industry since

It’s that time of year again! Time to kick off another exciting and fun-filled school year. Even if your kids have already walked out the door for the first day of classes, it is not too late to remind them how to get to and from school safely.

Safety must be the first lesson of every new school year.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Commission suggests the following for a safe return to school from the summer vacation.

RIDING THE SCHOOL BUS School buses are one of the safest ways for children to travel to and from school. However, there are dangers when children are boarding and leaving the bus. Teach your child to always play it SAFE: • • • •

Stay five steps away from the curb.

Always wait for the bus driver to tell you when to board.

Face forward after finding a seat on the bus.

Exit the bus when it stops, look left-right-left, and take five steps away from the bus toward the curb.

WALKING Walking to school is great exercise and gets kids ready to face their studies. Children under 10 years old should be accompanied by an adult or someone who will make sure they walk safely. Teach your child to always • Use the sidewalk whenever possible, and if there isn’t a sidewalk, walk on the edge of the street facing traffic.

• Focus when walking near traffic – this is no time for horseplay.

• Use crosswalks whenever they are available to cross the street.

• Look left-right-left before crossing any street.

BIKING Kids love riding their bikes and it can be a fun, quick way to get to school. Be sure to do these simple things to keep your bike ride safe: • Always wear a properly fitted helmet and securely fasten the chin strap.

• Ride in the same direction as traffic and follow traffic signs and signals.

• Stay in the bike lane whenever possible.

• Use the sidewalk appropriately and keep an eye out for other pedestrians.

• Never use electronics while riding – they are distracting.

DRIVING For some teens, back to school also means the new-found freedom of driving. Keep these things in mind when driving to keep your ride safe: • Have a safe driver behind the wheel.

• The car shouldn’t move until everyone is buckled up.

• Finally, remember that the phone stays down when you’re driving!

IMHO Raiders of the Lost Toast

By Ron Scopelliti According to a Gizmodo article, archaeologists recently discovered a 14,400-yearold piece of toast in a sunken fireplace in Jordan. This may seem like a trivial thing, but it proves that people began making bread much earlier than was previously thought – even before the dawn of agriculture.

This fascinates me for several reasons.

First, it makes me wonder why ancient humans were in such a hurry to develop bread. Maybe they heard that a snowstorm was coming and they needed something to go with the gallons of milk they’d stockpiled in preparation. Then again, I’m not sure how often it snows in Jordan; maybe it was a sandstorm.

Second, it makes me wonder if the discovery is going to be belittled by other archaeologists. Will the discoverers get harassing e-mails from colleagues, asking if they’ve found the earliest potato chip under the cushion of the world’s oldest sofa? Will snarky grad students come to their labs with shirts that say “I dug up a 14,000-year-old settlement, and all I got was a piece of toast and this lousy t-shirt.”

Personally, I think the discovery of ancient toast is every bit as interesting as the discovery of Skara Brae or Machu Picchu, though it’s not quite as photogenic. I suppose if the toast was displayed alongside King Tut’s burial mask, I could forgive people for overlooking it.

But the main reason I’m fascinated by the discovery is because it shows something that the ancients have in common with us, or more particularly, with me. A desire to eat toast.

I think toast is one of the most under-rated of all foods, at least publicly. I think we all appreciate it, but that appreciation often goes unstated.

The fact that toast is a valued part of our society is reflected in Gizmodo’s use of the word “toast” in their article. From what I’ve read about the discovery, it’s unclear to me if the bread was consciously toasted, or if it was just overcooked.

So it might be presumptuous to call it toast. But would the headline get your attention as much if they’d called it “burnt bread?”

Toast really is something special. If it wasn’t why would the “Flying Toasters” screensaver have been so popular? It just wouldn’t have been as cool if it had been flying food proces-

sors or flying garlic presses.

It’s one of the first foods that kids learn to prepare on their own, once the prerequisite orders are given not to remove the toast with a fork or knife. Luckily for Stone Age kids, the defining technology of the era made that that a non-issue. But I can imagine Paleolithic mothers admonishing kids to “keep that ox bone out of the stone oven,” and threatening corporal punishment with one of those new-fangled wooden spoons.

Toast is down to earth. It’s real. We spend too much time around stuff that’s not real. Like playing Windows solitaire, watching RGB dots simulate playing cards, accompanied by the fake sound of cards being shuffled and flipped.

There are no fake sounds when it comes to toast. Just the sound of steel being scraped across bread, and teeth breaking through the crispy surface. Learning that ancient teeth heard that same sound 14,400 years ago makes me feel particularly connected with my ancestors.

And though we think of toast as a rather pedestrian food these days, it was probably a bit of a delicacy 14,000 years ago. If there wasn’t any agriculture, then bread must have been pretty scarce, seeing as you’d have to go around gathering the ingredients.

After all those centuries, gourmet toast seems to be making a comeback, now that avocado toast is a thing. Apparently, anything is cool if you put a clump of mashed avocado on top of it. Avocado toast! Who would have thought such a thing back in the days when Wonder Bread was considered healthy, and a thin coating of Land O’ Lakes was the preferred toast topping. Except, of course, for when you augmented your butter by sprinkling on some Domino cinnamon-sugar from a yellow plastic container unaccountably shaped like a stereotypical, politically-incorrect cartoon Eskimo.

Though I relish the fact that I can go into a café in Providence and not feel out of place ordering avocado toast as a meal, I think toast is still something best reserved for home consumption. It’s best eaten on a sofa, accompanied by a warm beverage while watching Nova and hoping that archaeologists will answer the next great question: Were there Paleolithic Pop Tarts?

Until I heard that song, sung by Ringo Star during the 50th Anniversary Celebration of the Beatles first appearance on Ed Sullivan, the word submarine was not one I had used in a long time—but the song did tickle some memories of the past. As high school students, an invitation to watch the submarine races on the St. Lawrence was an invitation to go “necking” at the City Docks or the more secluded river edge, down a dirt road, past the Diamond Match factory. The only thing that submarines and watching the races had in common was heavily steamed up windows.

The whole boyfriend-girlfriend thing of our generation seems pretty tame in hindsight. But I offer this disclaimer—boyfriends were not my strong suit, and I admit to be no expert on the topic.

My first boyfriend was Bobby Garvey, one of the Garvey twins— in about second grade. Open displays of affection at that age usually involved friendly shoving, pushing and chasing and jumping in big piles of leaves. My next serious boyfriend was Paul McCad-

But as Paul lived beyond Morristown (12 miles away), it was a long-distance relationship doomed to fail.

As I remember, we “went steady” at what now seems to me to be a very early age. I remember receiving a friendship ring in sixth grade and wearing it around my neck on a gold chain. (And they called it puppy love!!) Wearing class rings to symbolize you were taken had to wait until our junior year where these more serious tokens were either worn on chains or on your ring finger, made to fit by yards of white adhesive tape. Kissing and other preliminary “stuff ” certainly occurred. In the junior high years, parlor games like spin the bottle and post office were ways to get an early introduction to physical expressions of affection. While I remember that spin the bottle involved sitting in a large circle on the floor and literally spinning a bottle, hoping it would stop while pointing to the latest heartthrob in the room, whom you then took into a closet for a kiss (which of course happened in only about 20 percent of the cases), I really forget the details of post office. Let it be said that I was not among those who were considered the most desirable picks.

Boys rated their ability to explore the female anatomy in baseball terms (getting to first, second and third base—and, of course, the elusive home run), and French kissing was truly progressive.

If you did have a steady, you could be sure that the breaking up process would be full of drama. Neil Sedaka had it right in his 1962 signature song, “Breaking Up Is Hard to Do,”—especially in a small town where everyone knew everyone’s business. Without the advantages of social media, locker rooms and girls’ bathrooms were the best place to pick up the sordid details of the latest break up. I remember one of my friends asking me to return her “steady’s” ring, accompanied by a white envelope filled with a gold chain all separated in little links. Her explanation—“I want him to know I’m really broken up about this.” Could we ever have been this young?!

Let’s be honest. Sex education of any formal type was almost non-existent as we were growing up. We did have some primary source materials—“Lady Chatterley’s Lover” made the rounds in more than one study hall. Hidden behind an open text book, one never read the whole paperback—just the pages that had been dog-eared and marked as “hot.” Health was not yet part of the New York State curriculum, and although 10th grade biology (raise your hand if you remember “Teddy Bear” Stratford), included academic information on reproduction, there was certainly no talk of birth control, sexually-transmitted diseases sexual abuse, date rape or sexual preference. Many girls were prepared for the changes wrought by puberty through films shown at their church-

es, with titles such as “You’re a Young Lady Now.” We have to remember that we were of the generation where Lucy and Desi, although married in real life, had to sleep in separate beds on their television show because of the censors. We should also remember that for much of the 20th century, women who married had to quit their jobs as teachers (hence, so many Misses in our elementary school life). Later, married teachers who were pregnant had to resign and as late as the 1950s, the discussion of evolution in science classes was still a bit “dicey.”

Was there sexual activity among teenagers in this rather Puritanical time? Of course. The first birth control pill was not marketed until 1960, but it wasn’t until 1972 that the Supreme Court legalized birth control for all citizens, irrespective of marital status. Abortion was illegal until Roe v. Wade in 1973. So what happened to young women who became pregnant in the 1960s?

Most of them were “sent away” to give birth to their babies and then place them for adoption. Many returned to finish their high school education, and few ever discussed the reason for their absence. Even in a small town like Ogdensburg, these pregnancies remained in the shadows.

Let me end on a somewhat lighter note. I was reading over the messages written in my yearbook. I think I missed my first proposal. On the inside flap I found the following message, “I want to truthfully know if you could put up with seriousness like this the rest of your life.” I was just 16—no wonder I I’m just getting it. I guess there was more than one reason that the song title beside my picture in the yearbook is “What Kind of Fool Am I?”

Smithfield Voters to Decide on Two MultiMillion-Dollar Bond Referenda in November

This November, in addition to the usual spate of candidates in the mid-term election, Smithfield voters will be asked on separate ballot questions whether to authorize two bond issues totaling $49.5 million.

The Fire Department is seeking a bond issue not to exceed $4.5 million to build a new station in the area of Route 7 and Route 116. The projected year of issuance is 2019.

In a separate item, the School Department is requesting a maximum of $45 million for major elementary school renovations, projected to be issued in three phases from 2020 to 2022.

While the heads of each department look hopefully towards passage of their referendum questions, former Town Council Vice President Paul Aiello has been a vehement and vocal critic of approving so much borrowing at one time.

Chief Robert Seltzer says, is to decrease response times to the area.

“We have some areas there that it takes us 12 to 14 minutes to get to. On the average we’re closer to 8 to 10 minutes,” says Chief Seltzer.

He says that response times in the rest of the town are four to six minutes, and that these times are critical in emergency medical situations, particularly if a person stops breathing or is in cardiac arrest. He notes that a variety of advanced equipment added to the department over the years has helped the department achieve a good record of resuscitating people, but that long response times decrease the chances of a successful resuscitation.

to four minutes of significant fire spread, compared to back in the sixties and seventies, when you had almost 17 minutes because of the materials being used in construction and furniture.

“If we’re going to make it safer for people, whether it’s a medical situation or your house is on fire – if we’re going to save property, we’ve got to get there in a reasonable amount of time, and if we’re going to save lives, we’ve got to get there in a reasonable amount of time.”

The bond will only be used to pay for the construction of the station, which will be equipped with apparatus that is already in inventory.

Once it’s built, the department plans to gradually add staff over a three-to-four year period, eventually totaling five.

“With what I have for staff now, if I hire five people, there’ll be someone rolling out of that new station 24/7.”

“It’s not our intent to say, ‘you’ve got to go hire five people next budget,’” Seltzer says. “We’re trying to plan this out so it eases the tax burden.”

Seltzer says that adding the new station would also increase the town’s standing with the Insurance Services Office (ISO), which has an impact on insurance rates throughout town.

The town is currently rated as ISO 4, and the best rating is ISO 1. Seltzer says the new station will definitely get the town to ISO 3. Further administrative changes, he believes, make it likely that the town will reach ISO 2.

“So not only are we improving our services,” he says, “at

least there’s a little financial savings on your insurance. Hopefully it will offset an increase in taxes.”

“The other plus to this is the income from responding to EMS calls,” Seltzer says, noting that one of the trucks at the new station will be outfitted as a technical rescue vehicle, and respond to auto accidents, extrications, and the like.

“We bill for automobile accidents. We’re in the process of generating about $80,000 a year on automobile accidents. And that vehicle is going to be a key component of that, because it’s a billable resource for some of the calls it goes on.”

Seltzer says the department has worked with the town’s Financial Review Commission to minimize the financial impact on taxpayers, and that the $4.5 million is a “worst case scenario.”

While they have right of first refusal on a state-owned property at the corner of Rtes. 7 and 116, Seltzer says that they will reach out to other property owners before they make the final decision to see if there’s something else available. An ideal situation, he says, would be a site with an existing building that could be converted into a fire station, saving money on construction and site preparation.

In the next few weeks, he notes, he will doing a bit of a “road show,” holding public forums where people will have the chance to get further information and ask questions.

“That’s our plan for September and October, leading up to the ballot,” Seltzer says.”

The School Department Bond The School Department’s $45 million bond issue would fund a multi-phase refurbishment and reconfiguration of the town’s elementary schools.

“The average age of our facilities is 59,” School Superintendent Judy Paolucci says of the town’s school buildings.

“They’re not in the shape they should be,” she says. “There’s a lot of deferred maintenance. And this happens in a lot of towns.”

“Certainly in this town, the schools are a big asset. Not only the facilities, but the whole school department is an asset to the town, so we’ve got to think about how to take care of it.”

The first phase in the plan is to relocate students from William Winsor School, built in 1933, expanding the nearby Anna McCabe School to accommodate them.

“I know for some people it’s a sad thing for Winsor to close,” says Paolucci, “but we do want the best for our students, and we want our students to be in a safer environment.”

She cites concerns about fire safety, traffic safety, security, and evacuation at the Putnam Pike building. One of the major issues is the lack of a sprinkler system in the library, which required the School Department to re-apply for a fire code variance this summer. Paolucci says the original variance was provided because the building was supposed to close in five years.

“That was eleven years ago,” she says.

To make room for the students from William Winsor School,

which has a current enrollment of 261, McCabe School will be expanded backwards, towards the High School. In the process, a gym will be added, so that the cafeteria will no longer do triple duty as a gymnasium and auditorium. The entrance to the building will also be relocated.

Paolucci says the gym will be located so that it can be used as a town resource on weekends, with the rest of the building closed off. The design of the addition will also offer options on how the grade levels are divided.

“You can organize it almost like two schools,” she says.

The principal amount for this portion of the project would be $22,314,420 with a projected issuance year of 2020.

The second phase of the program is to renovate and expand Raymond C. LaPerche School to accommodate the town’s preschool program, currently located at McCabe School. LaPerche will also get a gymnasium, and refurbished classrooms.

The principal amount for this phase of the project is 14,508,638, with a projected issuance date of 2021.

The third phase will involve renovations to Old County Road School.

“The main thing about Old County is it doesn’t have an elevator,” Paolucci says. In addition to the challenge it poses for students with physical disabilities, it also poses a challenge for responders dealing with medical emergencies.

In addition to the elevator, the school will get a “sally port” entrance, relocated to provide more security. All the elementary schools will get similar entrances during their phases of the project, as well as infrastructure and safety upgrades.

Principal for this final phase of the elementary school project is 8,176,942, projected to be issued in 2022.

Paolucci notes that she is looking at ways both to mitigate the cost of the bonds being requested, and to reduce future reliance on bond issues through a number of methods.

“When William Winsor School is closed, she says, “The town can either repurpose the building or market it out.

“The amount indicated in the bond assumes a worst case scenario where the town gets no financial gain from the property.”

She also says that the breakdown of costs sent out with the town’s latest tax bills assumes 40 percent state reimbursement on the project, but that the reimbursement could increase to 55 percent if a statewide $250 million school infrastructure bond is approved in the November election.

“At the same time I’m working on a plan that I’d like to have approved by the School Committee and the Town Council for a capital reserve fund,” Paolucci says.

The fund will be built up from three sources: the annual allocation from the town for capital projects; state reimbursement for capital expenditures; and part of the school department’s annual fund balance.

Once this fund is established, she says, “If we only spend out of this fund a maximum of between 65 and 75 percent of what we bring in the following year, then we start building it up.”

She and other department members are also pursuing grants to fund future capital improvements.

“I’m a taxpayer too,” Paolucci says. “I don’t want to have bond after bond.”

An Opposing Voice Former Town Council Vice President Paul Aiello has been a vocal critic of the two bond issues, noting the cumulative property tax effect that the increase in debt will have. He’s so strongly opposed, that, as The Smithfield Times went to press, he was planning to mail out fliers at his own expense, presenting his case against the bonds.

Aiello, who has spoken out on the subject at numerous meetings, feels that authorizing so much debt all at once will lead to exorbitant tax increases for many years to come.

“I’ve been bringing this issue up at Council meetings for three or four months now, as have other taxpayers in the area,” he says. “I’ve been dead against it from the start.”

Approving both bond issues would raise the town’s bond debt from its current $21,225,000 to $70,725,000. The town’s bond capacity is $82,625,135.

“They’re two separate bond issues,” he says. “But this is so staggering, I think it’s best right now to vote them both down, and start all over. I really do.”

According to a document included in the town’s tax bills, if both bonds are passed, the owner of an average single-family home would see a tax increase of $14 in 2020, $117.60 in 2021, and $249 in 2022.

Aiello says, however, that the information that was sent doesn’t reflect the true ramifications of the bond issues, because it accounts for the tax increases due to the bonds, but not for other increases.

“When you look at history, you’re looking at least two percent increases in the budget,” Aiello says. “So you add that to the bond issue and you’re looking at close to four percent, or more.” The state requires a four percent cap on tax increases, but there is a mechanism for over-riding the cap for a bond issue.

He is particularly concerned with the “multiplier effect” that

the increase in the town’s debt service payments will have on taxes.

“The higher your property bill is,” he explains, “the faster it climbs.”

“Each year you start out with a new, higher base value,” Aiello says, so the percentages compound over time.

According to his calculations, he says: “In just four years, a taxpayer’s cumulative property tax will be increased by over 20 percent.”

“It’s not sustainable. It’ll harm the taxpayers in Smithfield; there’s no doubt about it,” he says. “You’re going to need a Barrington income to live in Smithfield.”

“I’m not against school improvements,” Aiello notes, suggesting that they be taken on in a more incremental way. “Do a small bond issue – under 10 [million]. Focus on priority improvements. Do one school at a time. Then as our debt service is being paid down, take a look at another project.”

He says his concern over property taxes is longstanding.

“It’s not something that just came to me,” he says. “For 30 years this has been a major concern of mine. Someday I’m going to be on the tax freeze. What’s my tax going to be frozen at?

Six, seven, eight thousand dollars, if they still have [the senior tax freeze]?”

“This is a major issue in town,” Aiello says. “It will affect this town for the next 20 years.”

By Paul V. Palange Gunther Buerman’s passion for automobiles and art led to the creation of the Newport Car Museum, which has raced to the top of prestigious lists of recommended tourist attractions.

that was a missile manufacturing plant on the 17-acre Raytheon Co. campus in Portsmouth. The Buermans’ private collection of 70-plus automobiles focuses on seven decades of modern industrial automotive design and celebrates cars as works of art. One automobile is featured each month, and the 1965 Ford GT40 “Fast Five” movie car is being highlighted this month. The highly-accurate recreation of the GT40 was built exclusively for the filming of the 2011 “Fast Five,” the fifth installment of “The Fast and the Furious” franchise, and the car was featured prominently at the start of the movie during the train heist scene.

The 1965 auto is an exceptionally faithful recreation of a specific car, number P1005, which was one of the first GT40s prepared by Shelby American in 1965 and first campaigned

by France’s Scuderia Filipinetti, according to Buerman. Based on a hand-welded aluminum tub with fiberglass body panels, the car incorporates a potent 347/540 horsepower smallblock Ford V8 engine with Gurney-Weslake heads, five-speed manual gearbox, race-tuned suspension and an accurate handstitched black leather interior with right-hand drive, Buerman explained.

The original GT40s finished 1-2-3 in the 1966 running of the 24 Hours of LeMans, breaking the long winning stranglehold on the race by arch rival Ferrari. From its inception, the GT40

became more of an American product with each year of development. As such, it took on the design principles that defined American automobiles of the era. With the 1966 Manufacturers Championship in Ford hands, the GT40 project became one of the most influential projects in automobile racing. The GT40 not only provided a major victory for American talent, it showed the world that a car with a heavier, large-displacement engine was an acceptable platform in the world of GT endurance racing, according to Buerman, The 70-something Buerman is chairman of the American Rock Salt Co. in Retsof, N.Y., and former chairman of a law firm in New York In addition to collecting classic cars and furniture and running the museum, Gunther, who is originally from Germany, and his wife, who is a native of Sweden, are avid sailors. It appears Buerman will keep his foot on the gas pedal and keep on trucking.

“I flunked retirement in the first month and a half when I retired from practicing law. I’ve been trying really hard to do it ever since, but don’t think it will be in my lifetime,” he stated. “I do watch our docents, many who are retired, and find that they are very happy to come to a place where they meet new people every day. We all have a group of friends that we socialize with but for the docents and for me and for our members, the museum is a place to meet new and diverse people. I like being a …greeter, learning about all the different people coming to the museum, and conversely, they get a kick out of meeting me.”

The Buermans, who are residents of Highland Beach, Fla., and have a second home in Newport, plan to continue “Hoods Up Weekends” every second weekend of the month because Gunther wants to give patrons a great chance to see what makes their cars “rock, rumble and roar.”

Fall and winter activities will include movie nights on the third Wednesday of the month, starting Sept. 26, which promises to be a special evening, with the showing of “Fast Five” and a raffle that will feature a grand prize of a ride to lunch in the GT40 movie car. Raffle tickets are $20, and proceeds will go toward the purchase of mini electric cars that patients of Hasbro Children’s Hospital will use to go to their treatments.

There will be cool econd and third prizes, according to Buerman, and people don’t have to be present to win.

The Buermans are thinking of doing a weekly lecture series on Saturdays or Sundays to focus on the significance of individual cars in their collection, and Gunther stated fall is a great time for car clubs to visit the museum.

Admission is $18 for adults; $15 for senior citizens, military personnel and students with identifications; and $8 for children ages 5 to 15. There is no charge for children younger than 5, and tickets can be purchased online or at the door.

42 units of affordable family housing has begun construction at the former Narragansett Gray Iron’s Foundry site in Smithfield,

RI along the Woonasquatucket River. Following the eradication of environmental hazards on the site per DEM regulations, the footings and foundations are in for the 9 buildings which include a Community Room and Laundry Facility.

Gemini Housing and Coventry Housing Associates (two non-profit developers of affordable housing) joined together with the assistance of housing consultant Barbara Sokoloff Associates, to bring these 1, 2, and 3 bedroom units, including accessible units, to the Town of Smithfield to provide families affordable housing options and compliment the Town of Smithfield’s Revitalization Strategy and keeping the village setting as a high priority. Each building will host units in townhouse or single level and the development will include solar panels on approximately 11% of the total building capacity. The General Contractor, Stand Corporation, has been on site since April and we anticipate occupancy in initial buildings in May 2019.

By Sarah Payne MOVIES RELEASE A Simple Favor – September 14th - Could A Simple Favor be this year’s Gone Girl? I sure hope so. Directed by Paul Feig – who brought us classics like The Heat and Bridesmaids – A Simple Plan appears to be a much darker comedy in comparison. It stars Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick, who play mothers that befriend each other in a small town, until Lively’s character, Emily, mysteriously disappears.

Hold the Dark – September 28th (Netflix) - This may be the first time I’m looking forward to original content from Netflix (except for Stranger Things). In general, I get frustrated with Netflix for producing so much content that it’s difficult to sift through it all to find something worth watching. It seems like such a waste and inevitably leads to a lot of subpar movies and TV shows. Hold the Dark is a thriller set in Alaska, based on a book with the same title. It tells the story of a hunter attempting to save a boy who was taken by wolves.

There isn’t even a trailer yet and I get goosebumps just reading about it. I haven’t read the book, but many readers are calling author William Giraldi a “young Cormac McCarthy,” which is promising. In an interview with Indie Wire, director Jeremy Saulnier compares the film to his other work: “Not only did it have the most intense dialogue, and also the highest body count, it had a first war scene, it had an aerial sequence, and by far the most animals I’ve worked with … We’ve had a couple of test screenings … There [were] audible gasps in the theater.”

TV REVIEW Better Call Saul – Season 4 Premiere - Last month brought the long-awaited return of my favorite Breaking Bad spin-off series, Better Call Saul. We’re four seasons in, and I wonder how many people have stuck with the show all these years, just waiting for Jimmy McGill to complete his transformation into Saul Goodman? We finally have a taste of what’s to come, based on Jimmy’s cold and distant reaction to his brother’s death. I love how he’s always scheming, too (we get a taste of that at the end of the premiere). His character is like Walter White in that way. He’s always looking for a way to cut a corner to make an extra buck, whereas Walter White is always brainstorming ways to grow his empire. I often wonder,

though, what Jimmy’s partner Kim Wexler sees in him. The characters have great chemistry, but Kim seems so earnest and hardworking. She takes the total opposite approach to work than Jimmy and perhaps that will catch up to them as a couple this season. I’m really enjoying Mike Ehrmantraut’s storyline play out, too, and watching the tension between him and Lydia play out on screen. Each of them has an intensity – Mike’s is subtle and Lydia’s is frenzied. And for those who pay close attention, watch for one of Gus’ henchmen, who you may remember from the chilling box cutter episode in Breaking Bad.

MOVIE REVIEW Mission Impossible – Fallout - My mom and I always get very excited whenever a new Tom Cruise movie comes out, because as she puts it, Tom Cruise enjoys movies. He enjoys taking the audience on a wild ride – giving them an experience. That’s why he does all his own stunts. He does not disappoint in Mission Impossible – Fallout. The scene where he jumps out of an airplane (which I described in my column last month) took weeks to film for just a few minutes of screen time. There’s also a really great fight scene between three men in a bathroom that is choreographed nearly perfectly. And finally, one of my favorite actresses, Rebecca Ferguson (from Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation) , makes her return as the ever-elusive British spy. My one complaint about the film is that it is a bit too long, with a run time of two hours and twenty-eight minutes. When will movie producers understand no one likes sitting for more than two hours at a time?

AL BRUNO’S SMITHFIELD REMEMBERED — The

Esmond Market

Sasso, Jr. This is the eighteenth article in an occasional series about Smithfield locations that have either been forgotten by time or are no longer remembered for what they once represented. The locations are selected from a list compiled by former Smithfield Building Official Al Bruno.

A profile of Mr. Bruno, now 87, was originally featured in the January, 2017 edition of The Smithfield Times. The first installment of this series ran in February 2017.

In Al Bruno’s youth Esmond Street did not go all the way to Route 44. It ended at the intersection with Dean Avenue and Old County and Sebille Roads.

Now one of Smithfield’s most heavily traveled residential intersections, the area was also much used in Mr. Bruno’s younger days.

“It was always a busy corner, even before they put the road through. To get to Putnam Pike (Rte. 44) you had to take Sebille Road and wend your way along the pond. It came out

right about where the Rte. 295 overpass is located today,” he explains.

Nevertheless, the corner, where the East Smithfield Library, formerly the Dorothy P.T. Dame School, sits had plenty of traffic. That’s probably why George MacDonald operated the Esmond Market there.

“It’s where I went as a kid to get my hard candy and potato chips and such to have with my lunch at school across the street,” Mr. Bruno remembers.

“They had everything.

There was always a pile of people in there,” he adds. “For quite awhile they were the only store in the area that carried meats. Mr. MacDonald lived right across the way on the corner of Sebille Road where it meets Dean Avenue and the present day extension of Esmond Street. He was always around. They seemed to be open all the time.”

In time, though, the store changed hands. William Demaine, a WWI veteran, operated a market there for a considerable length of time.

Ron Scopelliti, an Esmond native who still lives nearby, recalls that in the 1970s, when he was a student at the Dame School, a Mr. Coombs ran the market. Like Mr. Bruno decades before, Scopelliti frequented the market to satisfy his sweet tooth.

we all poured in there to buy our candy,” Scopelliti says. He also mentions that Coombs was a stone carver, and he used the back room to carve and store his works.

In recent years the building has been put to different uses with a variety of tenants.

Among them were a consignment shop and a fruit store. For a number of years, a barbershop with a succession of different barbers has occupied one end of the structure, the part where the stone carvings were kept, Today, the occupants are a barbershop, J’s Last Minute Cuts, and a window replacement business, The Window Source.

By Jim Ignasher Incoming freshmen at Bryant College were invited to a “down on the farm’ barbeque at “Memory Hill”, the future site of the Bryant Unistructure. Students were introduced to faculty and administrators. These students would graduate in 1972, the year the Smithfield campus opened.

— Army Specialist James J. Motta of Georgiaville was discharged from the army after completion of his service in Vietnam.

Staff sergeant David M. Balfour Jr. of Esmond was awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal for meritorious

service as a crew chief aboard an F-4C aircraft in Vietnam.

Angus Bryant of Mountaindale Road completed his tour of duty in the U.S. Air Force.

Army Specialist John M. Cullen of Greenville was serving in Vietnam.

Airman Jeffrey R. Sweet of Greenville completed basic training for the U.S. Air Force, and would be assigned to Logistics Command at Chanute Air Base in Illinois.

Seaman Apprentice Ernest F. Littlerick, Jr. of Greenville completed basic training for the U.S. Navy.

— A carnival to benefit muscular dystrophy was held at 103 Dean Avenue in Esmond by Karen Shea, Joann Cunningham, Jeris and Cheryl Noducci, Kathy Wyatt, Polly and Marie Parsakian, and Bill Kerwin. A total of $48 was raised.

— The Maplewoods neighborhood in Greenville was still under development. A two-story garrison colonial on Peach Blossom Lane was advertised at $25,600. The home featured a two-car garage, fire place, 1.5 baths, and a walk out basement.

— Speaking of construction, two Greenville youths, Robert Lyons and Donald Morse, built a five story tall tree house behind a home on Beverly Circle. A photo was featured in a local newspaper.

— In September of 1968, the television shows 60 Minutes, Adam-12, Julia, and Hawaii Five-O aired for the first time.

— On September 15 the Smithfield Raiders pre-teen football team went to North Attleboro to play the Plainville Packers.

The Raiders won, 27 to 13.

— On September 17 the St. Michael’s Ave Marie Guild elected new officers. President: Mrs. Rose Farnsworth, Vice President: Mrs. Jenny Arruda, Recording Secretary: Mrs. Ann Tobin, Treasurer: Mrs. Joanne Serapiglia, Corresponding Secretary: Mrs. Marion Drummond.

— On September 18 People’s Bank at the Apple Valley Mall held their grand opening. The public was invited to stop in and receive free lollypops and balloons, and to register to win a color television. (The TV was won by a couple

Obituaries Doreen P. Nicholson, 45, died Monday, August 6, 2018 at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence. She was the beloved wife of Richard W. Nicholson. They had been married for twenty-one years.

Born in Staten Island, New York, she was a daughter of Eileen M. (Kessler) Lee of South Windsor, CT and the late Robert F. Lee. She was a graduate of Bryant University and she had worked as an accountant and CPA for many years.

Joan P. (Landry) Emin, 79, passed away surrounded by her loving family, Friday, August 24, 2018. She was for 60 years, the beloved wife of John F. Emin, Jr. Born in Woonsocket, she was a daughter of the late Norman E. and Stella M. (Pelletier) Landry. Mrs. Emin was an LPN for 39 years and received the nurse of the year award while working at Women & Infants Hospital before retiring in 2008. She was a Smithfield resident since 1951, a member of the Smithfield Historical Society and the Smithfield Republican Town Committee.

Besides her husband, she was the mother of Cheryl L. Tong (Joseph) of N. Attleboro, April L. McAlister of Smithfield, John F. Emin, III (Robin) of Coventry, Gerald D. Emin (Lisa) of Scituate, Seth W. Emin (Josephine) of Smithfield and the late baby John Emin. She was the sister of Deborah Dion, Richard G. Landry and the late Norma S. Williams. She is also survived by 8 grandchildren and was the mother in-law of Ritchie K. McAlister.

Her funeral was held Wednesday, August 29, 2018 at 8:45am from the TUCKER-QUINN Funeral Home, 643 Putnam Pike, Greenville, with a funeral service at 10am in Slatersville Congregational Church, 25 Green St. Slatersville. Burial was private. Visitation Tuesday, August 28, 2018 from 4-7pm. Tune In and Tune Up Your Life at This Year’s Health Fair

By Brittni Henderson Like healthy trees, humans can grow to be strong, rooted in the earth and in their bodies. But similarly, a poorly watered, fed, and cared for tree will be small, brittle, and likely to fall.

Don “DC” Culp shared this analogy when discussing the upcoming health fair that he and his organization “Tune in and Tune up” will be hosting for the second year in a row on October 21, 2018. Many things, including the lifestyle that Culp has been living for the past few decades, inspired the program.

Growing up, Culp became fascinated with music and martial arts. An unlikely pair but two arts in which he found major passion. Almost like yin and yang, the two brought him into two worlds: one of discipline and one of chaos. Culp was able to translate the restraint and self-control that he learned from martial arts to his music career, but it was evident that many others in the industry did not have that will.

Culp and other members of his organization, in conjunction wit the RI Music Hall of Fame, came up with the idea to create a safe place for education for individuals in the music industry who may not have access to health care or other healthy decision-making skills.

This year’s theme is “With a Little Help from Our Friends” and will have a special focus on the opioid awareness addiction crisis that has overtaken this country. This is an ideal forum to reach a large number of musicians and industry professionals who, due to in part to the lifestyle and peer pressure, have a higher percentage of drug and alcohol use disorders than other professions. Also, many in the field do not have health insurance, or have a hard time obtaining it.

The free fair will be held from 12-4pm at the Hope Artiste Village in Pawtucket, with a concert from 2-6pm as well.

Vendors from all ends of the health care industry are invited to be present to share information with attendees. There will be giveaways, interactive sessions, and music to tie everything together. It will be a whole body and mind affair.

“One of the most important things I can teach is that you can teach yourself,” Culp says. It is his hope that at this year’s fair, and many years to come, families will be able to gain the knowledge it takes to live healthy, long, and prosperous lives.

Stargazing

Sagittarius, the Archer

By David Huestis, Historian, Skyscrapers, Inc. The last few months have been an observing bonanza for amateur astronomers and casual stargazers alike. Jupiter returned to a late evening sky, followed by Saturn and then more recently Mars.

The local observatories have provided great views of these distant worlds when the skies were clear, and those of us fortunate to own even small to modest sized telescopes have been able to explore this parade of planets from the convenience of our backyards. If you haven’t found the time to observe this planetary “line-up” yet, the opportunity to do so is still possible.

At the beginning of September after sunset if you look towards the west southwest you’ll spot brilliant Venus. Jupiter will be the bright object up and to the left of Venus. Following a low arc east across the sky you’ll find Saturn, located above the teapot lid of Sagittarius. And finally, if you continue along that arc to the east you’ll have no difficulty finding pumpkin-colored Mars.

Make Jupiter your observing priority, as he’ll be difficult to view by mid-October, depending on your horizon view. You’ll have a couple of more months to view Saturn, and Mars will be visible through the rest of the year.

While you may be concentrating on this beautiful display of planets, you can’t help but notice the patch of milky nebulosity stretching across the sky from north to south. It’s our own Milky Way galaxy. And the constellation I wish to introduce you to is Sagittarius.

Sagittarius is an easy constellation to identify, but not in the guise of classical Greek mythology where the star pattern represents a centaur (half-human, half horse) archer, whose poisoned tipped arrow is pointed towards the scorpion’s heart (Antares) in nearby Scorpius. However, today we describe this star pattern as a teapot with the handle to the left and the spout to the right. The Milky Way appears to pour like steam up into the sky from the spout.

After sunset on September 1 look due south about 22 degrees above the horizon to find Sagittarius. Use the accompanying star map to help you identify this star pattern.

If you explored Saturn after my column two months ago, then you already should recognize Sagittarius. Saturn is still above and to the right of the teapot’s lid. But this region of sky contains many objects of interest to stargazers. While my columns on observing the

Leaking toilets are usually transparent to the homeowner. The leak takes place in the back portion or closet of the toilet, some leaks can be heard and some cannot be heard. Routine annual inspections of the closet are recommended. Usually a small adjustment or $10 repair kit is all that is necessary to repair the toilet.

planets required one to use a telescope to appreciate their beauty, a pair of 7x35 or 7x50 binoculars will initially suffice to explore the many star cluster and nebulae within this stellar pictogram.

Following is a short descriptive list of some of those brighter objects. They all have a designation with the prefix of “M”. French astronomer Charles Messier (1730-1817) catalogued them while he was hunting for comets There are a few bright open clusters within Sagittarius. Open clusters are groups of stars that formed out of vast dust clouds at the same time. There can be hundreds to a few thousands of stars in these clusters. Because they are only loosely gravitationally bound as a group, over millions of years the cluster will disperse.

Four notable open clusters in Sagittarius are: M17, M21, M23 and M24. See the star map for their locations within the constellation.

Binoculars will help you find them, but once you do be sure to use a telescope to reveal their beauty.

In addition, there is a bright more compact cluster of stars call M22. It is a globular cluster, a spherical group of 70,000+ stars tightly gravitationally bound. Binoculars will only show it as a diffuse, non-stellar patch. A small telescope will definitely enhance the view.

And finally, two exquisite emission nebulae await your discovery in Sagittarius. One is the Lagoon Nebula (M8) and the other one is the Trifid Nebula (M20). Binoculars will easily show them, and a telescope under low magnification will reveal them in the same field of view. These nebulae glow due to the gases being ionized by a nearby hot star. While photographic images show beautiful colors, your eye will see them more as a grayish-green hue. Observing from a dark location will reveal their intricate structure and beauty.

There are many more “deep sky” objects within Sagittarius, but I’ll let you discover some of them yourself.

Keep in mind that when you are looking at Sagittarius you are looking towards the center of our Milky Way galaxy. While you can’t see it, a super massive black hole called Sagittarius A resides there.

Enjoy the cosmological beauty that city lights obscure by using your binoculars and telescopes to collect starlight, not dust!!

Don’t forget to visit the local observatories to experience the beauty of the heavens.
