The winner of the naming contest, and their family, will be given a tour of the farm, including a meet-and-greet with the animals and farm personnel. Grampa Ted, who is a teacher with RI 4-H, the biggest youth organization in the world, will give a lesson about these animals and their importance in early American life. The winning family will also receive a delicious farm fresh lunch and ice cream.

Blackbird’s Grandpa Ted is more than happy to share his knowledge about these animals and their fascinating, if largely forgotten, history in shaping the New England landscape.

“Before any other technology,” Grandpa Ted says, “This was what we had. I love to tell the kids, and the adults, all about these animals and what they can do. People are amazed at how big they are. Maple and Sugar weigh 2,800 pounds each. They are powerful animals.”

Oxen (the plural form of ox) are bovine that are trained for hard work. Oxen are commonly castrated adult male cattle, making them more docile. Oxen are used for plowing and transport, such as pulling carts, hauling wagons and riding. By comparison, steer are castrated male animals that are grown for meat. In the New England tradition, young castrated cattle selected for draft are known as working steers

and are painstakingly trained from a young age. The steers are normally considered fully trained at the age of four and only then become known as oxen.

Oxen are thought to have first been harnessed and put to work around 4,000 BC. The animals are usually yoked (tethered) in pairs and are taught to respond to the signals of the teamster, or ox-driver. These signals are given by verbal command and body language. In North America, the most common commands are: “Back” for back up; “Gee” for turn right; “Get up” for go; “Haw” for turn left; “Whoa” for stop.

The rules are simple. There will be one winner, who must provide two names, one for each calf. The only stipulation is that the names do not rhyme or sound too much alike. Also, a name should not be lengthy, consisting of one or two syllables, which is considered best for training purposes.

When Things Go Bump In The Night

For the sake of argument, let’s suppose you’re having a problem with ghosts. Maybe it’s a poltergeist, a misty apparition, or a full-blown, level 3, ecto-plasmic- anomaly.

A what?

Never mind.

The point is, to quote a line from Ray Parker Junior’s 1984 hit song, Ghostbusters; “Who ya gonna call?”

In the Ghostbusters movie, those with spirit infested properties knew who to call because Doctor Venkman and company advertised on television and raced to haunted locations in the highly conspicuous “Ectomobile”. After locating the ghost, they would capture it using proton-pack-particle-beams and force it into a containment trap. Problem solved.

But hey, that’s Hollywood. Where does one go to find help getting rid of ghosts in real life? You can’t just pick up a newspaper and look through the ads for a handyman.

“Call Us! We’ll remove bats from your belfry, poltergeists from your porch, and apparitions from your attic, all for one low price! Act now, before October 31st, and receive a 10% discount!”

Nor can you go to a hardware store and purchase products such as “Ghost-B-Gone”, “Zombie-Zapper”, or “Spectral Spritz”, conveniently located next to the rat poison and hornet spray.

“Humm, should I get the brand name, or is the generic just as good?”

And calling a pest control company won’t work.

“Sorry, we don’t exterminate ghosts - they’re already dead.”

Perhaps you could try asking a friend or neighbor.

“Hey, Bob, who did you call to rid your home of those pesky ghosts?”

Then again, who wants neighbors gossiping about your ghosts? After all, a haunting could hurt property values.

Furthermore, nobody wants their home to become a tourist attraction for late-night revelers who read about it on the Internet.

Consider what’s happened in Amityville, Long Island, or closer to home, the “Conjuring” house in Burrillville.

Some maintain that ghosts are merely a figment of one’s imagination, and if you fall into that category then you have nothing to worry about, for you already know there’s a perfectly logical explanation for that transparent specter with glowing red eyes which appears nightly in the hallway at 3 a.m. You may not know what that explanation is, but you’re positive it’s not a ghost.

“It’s a good thing I know you don’t exist, or else I’d be scared.”

On the other hand, you might want to have someone check it out just to be sure.

Fortunately there’s the Internet, where finding someone for the job is just a few keystrokes away, but deciding just who to call isn’t as clear-cut as one might think, for there are literally thousands of choices. And that’s no exaggeration, for it seems there’s a lot of paranormal investigators out there, and most of them have a website. In fact, there’s even a website called ParanormalSocieties.com that lists roughly 4,300 paranormal investigation websites from all across the United States. Of course the numbers may fluctuate as some teams disband and others are formed.

Rhode Island has its share of paranormal investigators, but if you can’t find what you’re looking for locally, there are investigators throughout New England, New York, and New Jersey that advertise their willingness to travel.

Sifting through the numerous websites from different parts of the country can be interesting. While the vast majority appear professional, explaining who they are, and what they can do for you, I found a handful that looked like an overblown

Halloween card designed by an adolescent who might not be allowed out on a school night. Yet to be fair, there’s an old saying that goes, “You can’t judge what’s in a coffin by the lid”. OK, it’s not an old saying – I made it up, but you get the idea.

And while most paranormal teams don’t charge for their services, exactly what services they provide can vary, so you need to do your homework.

Historically speaking, tales of ghostly hauntings have been around for thousands of years, and while most people try to avoid encounters with ghosts, there’ve always been those who seek them out to investigate them. By the mid 1800s “ghost hunting” had become mainstream as more and more people began taking an interest in the supernatural. Paranormal investigation societies were established in both Europe and America.

The worlds oldest such organization still in existence is aptly named “The Ghost Club”, established in England in 1862.

And yes, they have a website.

Victorian Era investigators attempted “spirit communication” through the use of Ouija Boards, candles, mirrors, séances, and something called “automatic writing”. (Methods generally considered dangerous today.)

“So, how’s the weather there?”

“Hot! Really, really, hot!”

In 1913 a multi-millionaire grieving the recent loss of his wife offered a $50,000 reward to anyone who could “capture” a ghost and thus prove they exist. The story ran in some newspapers, but nobody collected the prize.

Modern-day investigators use hi-tec electronic devices in their attempts to prove that a legitimate haunting, and not a hoax, is taking place.

Surveys show that about 45% of the population believes in ghosts, with about 18% claiming to have seen a ghost or experienced some sort of paranormal event. That leaves about 55% in the non-believing or undecided category. Those who believe cite various forms of evidence, while skeptics maintain that despite the efforts of countless investigators throughout history, nobody has ever “scientifically” proven that ghosts are real.

Getting back to the original question, suppose the handymen are over booked, the hardware store is out of Ghost-BGone, and you can’t decide on which paranormal investigator(s) to call; what’s next? There’s always the option of contacting a clergyman of your faith. Many religions have people with specialized training in dealing with matters of the supernatural, and are spiritually equipped to combat evil entities, for everything is not always as it seems, and not everything that goes bump in the night is friendly.

Not religious? Then you’re back to square one.

Or maybe it’s best to leave well enough alone.

TECH REVIEW:

Backup and Sync from Google

Like many freelancers, I work out of an office in my home.

And while this offers many perks, it also has one major disadvantage – a lack of off-site computer backup. Back when I had an office, I would consistently back up files to a portable drive, and take it with me when I went home. That way if one site suffered a fire or break-in, my data would be safe at the other location.

While I have made some half-hearted attempts to use Dropbox as a makeshift back-up app, I recently decided to get more serious by trying out Backup and Sync from Google.

If you’re a regular user of Gmail, you’ve probably received several offers to download the application.

Other options offered are the ability to automatically sync files across devices, and the option to compress your photos, which lowers quality slightly, but allows you unlimited photo storage. While I opted not to use the compression option for professional purposes, it could be just the thing for saving casual photos.

Anyone with a Gmail account can use Backup and Sync for free, though there are also paid accounts available for businesses and individuals who need more than the standard 15 GB of cloud storage.

Since I have separate Gmail accounts for myself and for the book-publishing business I’m involved with, I set up separate Backup and Sync accounts for each. And, since I regularly use both a laptop and a desktop computer, I’ve got both computers linked to each account. One folder on each computer backs up files to my personal Gmail account, and one folder on each computer backs up files to my Greyledge Press Gmail account.

Though this entanglement of different computers and different accounts may sound complicated, once it’s in operation, Backup and Sync is practically invisible, showing up only as a toolbar icon which you can open to modify settings, or access your Backup and Sync cloud folder. The app also installs desktop shortcuts to Googles Docs, Slides, and Sheets apps. And it runs just as well on my increasingly-antiquated Windows 7 laptop as it does on my Windows 10 desktop.

The initial upload of files from my laptop did take quite a while – three-and-a-half hours to back up 3 GB worth of files, but that type of large upload is the exception, rather than the rule.

Apart from my personal issue of remembering which password goes with which account, I haven’t run into any glitches. If I start to run up against the 15 GB limit, it’s only $1.99 a month to upgrade to 100 GB. And if I do choose to switch over to a different backup solution, the structure of Backup and Sync from Google is pretty straightforward, so it shouldn’t pose a huge problem.

While it may not offer the features or the power of a product like Carbonite, if you’re looking for a free option to back up a limited number of files from a limited set of sources, Backup and Sync from Google is worth a try.

Inside the Brown Bag The Cost - $9.1 Billion!

By Peg Brown No, not the cost of a new social program, wind farm, or solar field. The number represents what the National Retail Federation (NRF) expects Americans to spend this year on All Hallows Eve Celebrations. Seriously. We all know some details of Halloween’s origins, and if we look back through the fog to ancient history we will be reminded that Halloween and the Day of the Dead share origins with the Christian commemoration of the dead on All Saints’ and All Souls’ Day. It would be an understatement to say that the Halloween Americans celebrate today is a slightly modern twist on those ancient roots. According to a 1998 article “Halloween: An American Holiday,” (LP Bannantyne), the current practice of trick-or-treat in America was originally “taking a masquerade from house to house on Guy Fawkes Day (practiced today in England on November 5 with large bon fires). But is was the Irish Halloween custom of processions of those in costume going from house to house asking for food or money, guaranteeing prosperity to those who gave, that evolved “into 20th-century trick-ortreating.”

According to this same article “trick-or-treating grew popular between 1920 and 1950… first in wealthier areas of the East, then slowly spreading over the ‘40s and ‘50s across the West and throughout the South. Much earlier than the 20th century, a form of trick or treating was observed around Thanksgiving, when “poorer children would dress in…ragged clothes and beg ‘something for Thanksgiving’.”

Let’s fast forward to Halloween for the Baby Boomer Generation which most of us can dimly remember. While the mothers of many of us insisted we trick-or-treat for UNICEF, collecting pennies in those little cardboard containers, many of us made a second nocturnal tour for the “loot.” As I recall, store bought costumes were rare, and as young girls we often raided Mother’s closet for old prom gowns which, in hindsight, were probably early versions of trying to appear like today’s Disney princesses.

As we got older, and more sophisticated, we resorted to old flannel shirts, jeans tied with a rope, and stomachs enlarged with bed pillows in our own version of “a bum.” If we got lazy, we would simply take an old sheet, cut two holes for eyes, and trip our way through the streets carrying a pillow case for our candy.

I did a quick check to see what had been the most popular costumes in the ‘50s and ‘60s. Pattern books of those decades revealed that cat, leopard, and bunny costumes were popular as were witches, clowns, devils and, as today, superheroes.

Our parents always inspected our cache when we dumped it on the kitchen table. The theory was that they were making sure everything was safe—that there were no hidden razor blades or pins—but secretly I am sure they were looking for their favorites to purloin later. We counted, sorted and traded (and discarded the apples, popcorn and raisins). In those days we usually trick-or-treated until Junior High, or until we were asked three houses in a row, “Aren’t you a little old for this?”

There of course were Halloween parties, even in school. Both McCall’s Cook Book and Betty Crocker’s Parties for Children, suggest the appropriate holiday decorations, food and activities for such events. McCall’s suggested making costumes mandatory, serving sloppy joes and chocolate cake decorated with fudge frosting and candy corn, accompanied by ice cream and hot cocoa. Betty suggested that menu include “Witches’ Cauldron Soup, Goblin Franks, vegetable relishes (really????), ice cream Jack-O’-Lanterns and milk Halloween cookies.” I personally remember cider and donuts being a staple for these occasions.

But, of course, it was the candy that was most important. A list of ads published in the Chicago Tribune, Washington Post, and Los Angeles Times in 1962 for Halloween candy lists the same classics we see today: Hershey bars, M&Ms, Milky Way, Tootsie Rolls, and Nestle Bars. There were also a few items on that list that might be banned today—like those candy cigarettes.

And let’s not forget the iconic candy corn. The Wunderle Candy Company of Philadelphia was the first to commercially produce candy corn in the 1880s, but research indicates that the candy, often referred to as chicken feed, was homemade before this time (there’s a recipe from 1883 published in Secrets of the Bakers and Confectioners’ Trade entitled “imitation Indian Corn”). It was only after WWII that candy corn was really promoted as a treat for Halloween. (Candy Corn is my absolute favorite seasonal candy—second behind Easter’s black jelly beans. However, when I saw it on shelves in August, I could only imagine how long it must take for corn syrup to deteriorate—however, I quickly rationalized that concern away!)

Enough about the past. My real purpose is to startle you with the present practices surrounding Halloween. Hold onto your hat—err, mask!

If the expenditure of $9.1 billion didn’t make you gasp, perhaps some of these facts provided by the National Retail Federation for Halloween in America--2018 will: • Expected number of people who will celebrate—179 million (a new high); • Average expenditure each (for costumes, candy, décor) --$86.13 (also a new high, but still a long distance behind Americans’ expenditures for Christmas, Mother’s and Father’s Day’s, Valentine’s Day and Easter); • More than 70 percent of Americans are expected to hand out candy, spending an average of $25 each, or a collective $2.7

Costumes for 2018 will be largely related to movie and television characters, including the Black Panther, Teen Titans, The Incredibles 2, DC Super Hero Girls, Game of Thornes, Avengers: Infinity War and Ant Man and the Wasp (none of which I’ve seen I am happy to say). There will also be many traditional superheroes stalking the streets, including iconic Iron Man, Superman, Spiderman and anything related to Star Wars. And, there will be no escaping the Disney Princess Parade, especially for those girls 5 and under. Animal costumes will pop up, and don’t be surprised if you see inflatable Godzilla. Inflatable costumes are the new hot trend on Amazon.

Halloween costumes will likely also be fueled by the release of Halloween Movie 2018, due in theaters on October 19, detailing the final confrontation between a woman and a masked character who attempted to include her in his mass killing spree decades before.

Let me end where my heart really lies—with the candy. According to a survey conducted by the Candy Store, the favorites today are, in order, no surprise—Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, Snickers, Twix, Kit Kat and M&Ms. Least favorite, according to the same survey—pay attention if you don’t want your windows soaped—circus peanuts, candy corn (oh no!), wax Coke bottles (do they still make these?), Necco wafers, Mary Janes, and Tootsie Rolls (because you get lots in a bag, they are considered “cheap”).

And one more candy fact. Forbes Magazine did a survey to see what candy was most popular in each of the 50 states. Turns out, I am living in the right place—candy corn is the number one candy in Rhode Island and many other states. If you want those coveted Peanut Butter Cups you’ll have to travel to Wyoming, for Snickers, to Oklahoma, and for M&Ms, to California (where I am sure they are produced in politically correct colors). If you really want to color outside the box, travel to West Virginia where the most popular treat is the non-traditional Oreo.

The good news—I am knee deep in candy corn at least until November, and I am sure those black jelly beans will be on the shelf in February. If I can buy enough candy corn at half price after Halloween, I might be able to make it until then. Maybe….

Now, get out there and shop. We don’t want the National Retail Federation to have to revise their projections.

Halloween is right around the corner. Probably one of the more fun children’s event of the year. I remember my own kids growing up and how they looked forward to Halloween each year.

Although Halloween night can be much fun it can also be a dangerous night. Dark conditions and excited young children do not mix well on Halloween night. In all the excitement, it is too easy to loose site of safety and when that happens, accidents occur.

To ensure a safe evening, consider the following.

• When choosing a costume, stay away from billowing or long trailing fabric. If you are making your own costume, choose material that won’t easily ignite if it comes into contact with heat or flame. If your child is wearing a mask, make sure the eye holes are large enough so they can see out.

• Provide children with flashlights to carry for lighting or glow sticks as part of their costume.

• Dried flowers, cornstalks, and crepe paper are highly flammable. Keep these and other decorations well away from all open flames and heat sources, including light bulbs and heaters.

• It is safest to use a flashlight or battery-operated candles in a jack-o-lantern. If you use a real candle, use extreme caution. Make sure children are watched at all times when candles are lit. When lighting candles inside jacko-lanterns, use long fireplace-style matches or a utility lighter. Be sure to place lit pumpkins well away from

anything that can burn and far away from trick-or-treaters, doorsteps, walkways, and yards.

• If you choose to use candle decorations, make sure to keep them well attended at all times.

• Remember to keep exits clear of decorations, so nothing blocks escape routes.

• Tell children to stay away from open flames. Be sure they know how to stop, drop and roll if their clothing catches fire. (Have them practice stopping immediately, dropping to the ground, covering their face with hands, and rolling over and over to put the flames out.)

• Use flashlights as alternatives to candles or torch lights when decorating walkways and yards. They are much safer for trick-or-treaters, whose costumes may brush against the lighting.

• Maybe consider a party at your home inviting children from the neighborhood. This would provide for safer, more controlled environment.

But regardless of what you choose to do on Halloween night, be safe, have fun, and enjoy the kids while they are young!

Inside Scoop Will bonds lead to bust?

Tassoni, Jr. This November’s mid-term election ballot includes two separate bond referendums that will ask Smithfield voters to authorize funds for a new Fire Station in the proximity of Rtes. 7 and 116, not to exceed $4.5 million, along with a maximum of $45 million for major school renovations.

The total for the two bonds is $49.5 million.

While these seem like forward-moving measures for the town, questions arise as to the validity of these requests, the repercussions of borrowing such large sums of revenue, and what effect it will have on the taxpayers.

The answer is simple: TAX INCREASES As a former state senator and longtime public servant, I fully understand the

need for these types of upgrades, but better planning and fiscal responsibility must also accompany such requests.

In my opinion, the bond for a new Fire Station is valid and appropriate. I support the construction of a new facility in an area that currently lacks one, to help the town provide easier and faster fire and rescue services to homes and hospitals and other care facilities in the area.

The bond for school renovations does not seem necessary at this time and needs a better plan of action to implement such major improvements, including a closer examination of the most recent census which indicates a decline in student enrollment.

costly and will force town officials to raise taxes to a point that we will price ourselves right out of our own community. Businesses will not want to come to the town because of the high tax structure, and home sales will skyrocket because people will no longer be able to afford the taxes.

We need to look at our options. We need to make better fiscal decisions based on expected outcomes, in a timely manner.

Most importantly, we need to ensure that our town’s budget is meeting the needs of the community members while keeping the debt at a sustainable level.

It starts with your vote. Your VOTE- For or Against the measures that sounds good on a ballot, but will only hurt the taxpayers and the town in the long run.

Local Paranormal Investigators Find Area Fertile Grounds for Hauntings

The Blackstone Valley is alive with the echoes of souls that roam the old mills, homes, social clubs and land they once inhabited, according to Tom D’Agostino and his wife Arlene, authors of a newly released book, Ghosts of the Blackstone Valley.

The couple, originally from Greenville, now live in Putnam, CT. They have many ties in Smithfield, and visit family and friends often. Tom and his brother continue to run a local music store, Rudy D’Agostino’s The Music Complex on Putnam Pike, which has been in operation since 1994.

Tom is a paranormal researcher and investigator, author, and student of history. He has been studying and investigating paranormal accounts for more than three and a half decades with his wife. Tom earned a degree in political science from Rhode Island College and is a multi-instrument musician who builds his own musical instruments, many from the Medieval and Renaissance eras. Arlene is a professional photographer.

Her vast education spans from photography to marketing and fundraising. Arlene is also a talented tarot card reader with years of experience and success in the field. Tom and Arlene work together with some of the best names in the field investigating the paranormal from New England and beyond.

Growing up, Tom was not unlike other kids who had a strong interest in all things ghost-related. However, he had some unique experiences most kids did not, and this may have been what propelled an interest in the paranormal that continues to this day.

“We kind of grew up in a house that was haunted, or at least seemed to be haunted,” Tom says. “Some strange things used to happen that couldn’t be explained.”

As he grew, his interest never waned, and after spending six days in a purported haunted house when he was a teenager, he knew this would be a lifelong pastime. When it came time to go to college, he studied a variety of physical and esoteric sciences, including meteorology and astronomy.

“I wanted to see what angles I could best use to attack the phenomenon I experienced with ghosts, apparitions, unexplained noises, and other related activities,” Tom says. “To me, it’s more of a science. It’s all about energy. Energy is what influences objects and causes things to move, and I wanted to explore the hows and whys.”

It was around this time that Tom began to do his own investigations in cemeteries and houses believed to be haunted. And a paranormal investigator was born. It was 1982, just before this field became popular in modern culture, helped along by the

success of mainstream films like Ghostbusters and Poltergeist.

“Back then, there were only a handful of us,” Tom says, “and you were considered a complete nutcase.”

Tom didn’t have a lot of that fancy equipment you might see in movies. He had been an automotive machinist, and he utilized thermal scanners that were used on engines. Tom had worked in construction, and had access to EMF (Elector-Magnetic Field) meters. These became his tools of the trade, simple but effective means of detecting energy sources and spikes.

Tom and Arlene have conducted over 1,200 investigations, a service they have always done for free.

“We don’t charge for investigations,” Tom says. “My wife and I do it to help people who are troubled by something and want answers or rational explanations. I started doing this because I loved the discovery aspect of it. Finding answers to what happened and what is really going on is why we both do it.”

A lot of the times, this local paranormal research team does find answers, but it’s not the kind you might think.

“Many times these events can be nothing more than a series of coincidences that lead some people to believe some paranormal is happening,” Tom says. “Sometimes if there are a number of things occurring, most can be quickly explained while one or two things remain unexplainable and could be something paranormal. So it can be a combination of something and nothing, and everything in between.”

Finding definitive answers about what’s on the other side of this veil of existence is what some people would like to know, but Tom doesn’t think that level of knowledge is attainable.

“It’s a one way ticket to the beyond,” Tom says. “It’s not

something we can actually study very well. While we can provide some answers, we cannot go to the other side, find out what’s going on there and then come back and report it to others.”

Tom and Arlene have authored twelve acclaimed books on the subject of ghosts, haunts and folklore of New England, with Ghosts of the Blackstone Valley being their latest effort. A 2005 title, Haunted Rhode Island, describes some of the local haunting sites, but Ghosts of the Blackstone Valley goes much deeper into the paranormal activities that have existed, and still exist, in and around Smithfield. Tom and Arlene’s new book explores several newly discovered local sites where paranormal activity is suspected.

For instance, there is a monument in Cumberland where the ghosts of nine colonists slain in King Philip’s War linger. There is a haunted antique store in Chepachet, and spirits of another kind that are served in historic establishments like Granville’s Pub and the Tavern on Main. And then there is Woonsocket’s Precious Blood Cemetery, where ghosts wander endlessly searching for their loved ones.

“Blackstone Valley is noted as the Birthplace of the American Industrial Revolution,” Tom says. “With that you had people leaving their farms to go to work in the factories and mills, which were quite dangerous places. As a result, there were numerous accidents and deaths.”

Tom also mentions King Philip’s war, sometimes called the First Indian War, a 1675–78 conflict between local American Indians and New England settlers. The war was named for the Wampanoag chief who adopted the name Philip because of friendly relations with the Mayflower Pilgrims.

“Some of that war was fought right here on this soil,” Tom says. “And they didn’t just fight each other. They burned villages, killing women and children mercilessly on both sides. So there is an awful lot of scarring that took place, particularly in the Blackstone Valley. Between the mill tragedies and the brutal war, these things make the area rife for haunts.”

to nearly 600 members not only from Smithfield, but from throughout the state, as well as Connecticut and Massachusetts.

“We get along very well as a family,” Armstrong says of the small staff.

Located in Deerfield Park, at 1 William J. Hawkins Jr. Trail, the center still offers time-honored activities like bocce, bingo, and card games. But there’s been a shift over the years to a more active lifestyle.

“It’s a younger generation that’s really into health and wellness,” McAdam-Prickett says. “We see that our seniors are now more interested in exercise and learning new skills and even languages. So bingo is definitely not our forte now.”

“Our yoga class is huge. Our Forever Fit class is huge,” she adds, noting: “It’s not chair yoga. It’s ‘mats on the floor’ yoga.”

She says there’s no longer a demand for the less strenuous chair variety.

“It’s changing for them,” Armstrong says. “Even meals – they used to have a sit-down hot meal for lunch. Now everything’s soup or a salad or a sandwich to go. We sell fitness salads, now, that we do a really good business on.”

The change is reflected in a series of workshops taking place this month to teach seniors how to use Uber and Lyft.

They’re presented in partnership with the Rhode Island College Foundation, Age-Friendly Rhode Island, AARP, and AAA. “We hear all the time about transportation needs – on a daily basis,” Armstrong says. They hope that these workshops

will help seniors get over the culture shock of entering credit-card information into an app, and using a ride-sharing service.

They also hope that presenting forward-looking programs like these will help dispel common misconceptions about senior centers.

“For some reason the stigma behind ‘senior center’ keeps people away,” McAdam-Prickett says. “They don’t think they’re old enough,” she says, or they think that senior centers are places for the infirm to sit and while away time.

A visit to one of the center’s monthly parties should dispel those notions.

“We have the best parties,” Armstrong says. “We can draw 100 people to a party – who does that?”

McAdam-Prickett adds: “When they put on “Sweet Caroline,” you would think we were at a Red Sox game.

The liveliness, they say, carries over to their numerous trips, which include day-trips, overnight stays, and cruises.

Armstrong says their 20-passenger bus sells out so fast that they’re in the process of having a 29-passenger bus built, following its approval at the recent Financial Town Meeting.

Despite the upbeat atmosphere, there’s a great deal of behindthe-scenes work that Senior Center members will never see.

“Sometimes people don’t realize it takes a lot more than a bingo dabber to do our jobs,” says McAdams-Prickett.

bring in funding, including the funds being used to renovate the center’s sidewalks, and to make the front door handicapped-accessible. They also secured a legislative grant to fund new activities which will be announced in the future.

“We write a lot of grants,” Armstrong says, noting that they do their own grant-writing, rather than hiring consultants.

McAdam-Prickett says that they also incorporate fund raising into many of their activities. “Pretty much every program has a 50/50 raffle,” she says. “We run silent auctions; every now and then we do a special event.”

“Karen and I are also part of the Smithfield Special Events Committee,” she adds. “We definitely do a lot with the community as well.” This includes outreach to local nursing homes, the Fire Department, and schools.

In addition, they have to be ready for any medical emergencies that may arise, and are certified in First Aid, CPR, Food Safety, and a number of other disciplines. Despite preparing for the worst, however, the two tend to focus on the best.

“The best part of our job is when we are able to make seniors feel good, and happy,” says McAdam-Prickett.

Forgotten Romance Superstitions of Halloween

By Jim Ignasher Halloween night and Valentines Day are three-and-a-half months apart, and are generally considered to be very different holidays, yet one may be surprised to learn that in the 19th century All Hallows Eve was considered the night when a young man or woman could learn the identity of their future wife or husband, or if they were destined to remain single.

Gaining such “knowledge” was achieved through a variety of superstitious rituals that in the 1600s would have gotten one convicted of practicing Witchcraft.

For example, one superstition involved placing a small piece of wood in a glass of water, and leaving it next to the bedside overnight. It was said that the person who did so would have a dream about someone falling off a bridge and into water. The dreamer was to then “rescue” that person, and stare into their face, for it would be

the face of their future spouse.

Another superstition held that if a maiden ate an apple in a room illuminated by a single candle, while staring into a mirror, she would see the image of her future husband appear behind her. A variation of this ritual involved standing outdoors under a full moon with a hand mirror, and begin walking backwards while reciting a short incantation.

Apples also figured into other Halloween rituals. It was said that if one carefully peeled an apple skin in one continuous piece and then threw it over their left shoulder, the way it landed would form the first initial of the person’s name they were to marry.

If one wanted to get an idea where their future spouse lived, they’d go outside at midnight and toss a small lock of their hair into the night breeze. Whatever direction the hair was blown would be the direction from which their true love would come.

It’s possible the following superstition was once practiced in the Limerock section of Lincoln. It was said that if a young lass made her way to an old lime kiln on Halloween Night she could learn the identity of her future husband. To do so involved tossing a blue ball of yarn into the empty kiln while holding on to one end, and then slowly pulling it out. At some point “something” would grab hold of the string, at which time the lass would call out, “Who holds!?” The voice that answered would state the name of her future husband. Why the color of the yarn had to be blue is unknown.

If no lime kilns were handy, a girl could toss a ball of yarn out her bedroom window at midnight on Halloween. (Color optional) The man who returned it would be the one she’d marry.

One Halloween superstition only predicted if one would marry. It involved placing three cups on a table in a dimly lit room. The first cup would be empty. The second would contain clean water, and the third, dirty water. A boy or girl would be blindfolded, brought into the room, and told to place three fingers in one of the cups. If their fingers landed in clean water, they would marry a young person. If they touched the dirty water, they’d marry a widow, or perhaps marry late in life. If their fingers landed in the empty cup, they were destined to be single.

Another Halloween ritual involving blindfolds dates to the 1830s in which young people would have their eyes covered

and then be led to a garden where stalks of colewort grew. Each would be instructed to pull at the first stalk they touched. The size, taste, and condition of the stalk indicated certain physical characteristics and personality traits that would be found in their future spouse. If the roots still held a large clump of dirt it meant a significant dowry and good fortune.

We’ve all heard that the woman who catches the bride’s bouquet at a wedding will be the next to marry, but how many are familiar with the superstition involving “Cupid’s Cake?” In this affair, a ring symbolizing a wedding band would be baked into a cake on Halloween. At midnight, the cake would be cut into pieces and all single persons present would be invited to eat one.

The person who got the slice with the ring inside was presumed to be the next to marry.

Nuts also figure into Halloween lore pertaining to romance.

In some parts of Scotland and northern England, Halloween was known as “Nut Crack Night”, during which some would practice fortune telling by roasting chestnuts over a fire.

One example involved a woman giving each nut the name of a potential suitor, and then placing them over the hearth. The behavior of the nuts would indicate certain personality traits.

Such as, if a nut hissed it indicated a bad temper. One that caught fire indicated passion. And so on.

Other times a couple contemplating marriage would place two nuts together. If one “popped” and moved away it indicated a separation; either death or divorce. If both remained together while they turned to ashes, it indicated a Halloween when goblins walk, long and happy And Cupid laughs and spookies stalk. life together.

There were of course variations to all of these superstitions, which over the last century have fallen into obscurity and Halloween as we know it today is vastly different. In any case, may all who seek it find true love, whatever day of the year it is.

A spark of creativity produced a shift in vision for a budding female entrepreneur

There is most likely an old and run-down item in your home that has become an eyesore, or has, better yet, found a home in your basement.

Whether this item is cumbersome and hard to dispose of, or it holds sentimental value so it’s difficult to part with, there’s a reason you’re holding on. Allison Trainor, 28, began refinishing items like this as a hobby, but just recently decided that it could be more than just a side job.

Trainor is a self-proclaimed “non-creative” person, joking that she never had the ability to draw anything remotely artistic. Even her penmanship was nothing to write home about. Although she felt this way about her creative side, she decided to give canvas painting a try

“This is what started the chain of new creative hobbies I taught myself,” she shares. “It started with canvas painting and knitting, and then these skills ultimately lead me to furniture refinishing.”

Trainor has created her own line of refurbished furniture called Shifted Vintage that she sells at different marketplaces in Rhode Island and Massachusetts. She goes exploring for quality, solid wood vintage furniture with “great bones,” at vintage shops, thrift stores, and online platforms like Facebook Marketplace, Let Go, and Craigslist. At this point in her life, Trainor still works full time, so she can utilize this income to purchase furniture and the supplies needed to work her magic.

Entrepreneurship has always been in Trainor’s blood, and she realized recently that this hobby could become a lucrative business for her. It would not only be a way to support herself, but something she truly loves, as well.

“I always had the idea of profit potential in the back of my mind,” she says, “which is why I believe it is a hobby that I stuck with. The profit margins on furniture are a lot higher than that of knitted products and canvas paintings. It also gave me a new outlook on my career potential. I’ve been working in the corporate field for about 7 years now, and all of a sudden it stopped making sense to me. Every day, I rush home from work to pick up a paintbrush—I literally never relax! I started giving up my free time to ‘work,’ which made me realize that is not actually work for me, but my passion.”

As a way to additionally supplement this part of her life, Trainor is also a premier retailer of Dixie Belle paints. After trying different brands of paint, she found Dixie Belle to be superior not only in the quality of paint, but the extensive line of products. Trainor carries the entire line of products so she can acquire paint herself and to grow a customer base of other individuals in the business.

As she continues to grow her business, Trainor’s ultimate goal is to do this work on a full time basis, increase the amount of custom jobs, continue to sell her pieces, and help to educate people who are interested in doing this themselves.

“One of my plans is to offer classes and workshops where people can make their own home décor,” she says, “much like the ‘Paint Nights’ that many of us have been to.”

By Jim Ignasher The first annual Providence County Grange Fair was held Columbus Day weekend at Waterman’s Field at Waterman’s Lake. Attractions included a midway, carnival games, rides, and food concessions.

Opening day was designated “Pawtucket-Blackstone Valley Day”.

Day two was designated “Northern Rhode Island Apple Country Day” during which the Apple Blossom Queen and her court, the Grange prince and princess, the Dairy Queen, and Miss Rhode Island, were all on hand to take part in the crowning of the Providence County Grange Harvest Queen.

(That’s a lot of royalty for a fair!).

The day was marked with agricultural events and contests which included calf roping, cattle and sheep shows, and a greased pig chase and greased pole contest.

The third day was designated “Providence County Horse Lov-

ers Day”, and featured a horse show.

Mayors and town officials from all over Providence County attended the event, as well as Rhode Island’s governor.

— It was also on Columbus Day weekend that the volunteer fire companies of Smithfield held a parade that went from the high school, down Pleasant View Avenue, and culminated at Greenville Plaza. (Where the hardware store is located today.) The purpose was to celebrate the launch of a year-long fire safety campaign known as “EDITH”, (Exit Drills In The Home).

The program was to assist families in creating escape plans as to how they’d exit their homes in the event of a fire.

The program was implemented by Chief Norman Segee, with assistance from Lieutenant Harold French, and the president of the Smithfield Jaycees, Leon Carney.

When the parade was over, firemen put on fire-fighting and firstaid demonstrations.

— Navy gunner’s mate Richard N. Kanea of Greenville returned home after his third tour of duty in Vietnam as a gunner on an assault boat.

Lieutenant Stephen S. Wyman of Esmond was married in the chapel at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado.

— On October 11, NASA launched Apollo 7, with the three-man crew of Schirra, Eisele, and Cunningham, aboard. The goal was not to travel to the Moon, but to orbit the earth and test the Lunar Module docking capabilities with the Command Module while broadcasting live television. This was the first time live television had been broadcast from space.

— The town dump was once located on Ridge Road at the North Providence town line. By the fall of 1968 it had grown significantly, leading area residents to complain about the smells, frequent fires, and thousands of rats, prompting local officials to look for alternative ways to discard trash. It was reported that from October, 1967, to October, 1968, the town had deposited 10,000 tons of garbage at the dump, and it was projected that by 1990, that amount would double.

— The Smithfield Conservation Commission presented the Apple Blossom Garden Club with a citation commending the organization for its town beautification efforts. In recent months the club had landscaped the Greenville Common and the Panzarella-Silvia Vietnam Memorial on Whipple Road at Douglas Pike, and was currently in the process of planting trees and flowers at Greenville Plaza.

The Smithfield Conservation Commission, with support from the Greenville Grange and the Apple Blossom Garden Club, put forth a proposal to turn a section of vacant land at the intersection of Austin Avenue and Putnam Pike into a memorial park honoring all volunteer firemen who’d served in the town of Smithfield. The plan included landscaping, tree planting, a monument, and a parking area. History has shown that the park was never built.

— On October 20 the Raymond C. La Perche School was dedicated.

Mr. La Perche had served in various leadership capacities within the Smithfield School Department for 41 years before retiring in 1963.

— The IGA supermarket in Greenville was offering three pounds of Macintosh apples for 29 cents.

— Peoples Bank at the Apple Valley Mall was offering 5% interest on all savings accounts, compounded monthly.

IMHO Circular Logic

By Ron Scopelliti I approve. I just want to get that out there right from the start. I do approve.

Sorry, I kinda got ahead of myself – I’m talking about the new set of roundabouts in Apponaug, officially known as the “Apponaug Circulator.” I only recently had a chance to try it out, and going through it once has made me want to immediately go back and try it again. I know it’s caused some debate among drivers, but according to traffic engineers a setup like this reduces the severity of accidents compared to more traditional intersections, because there are no opportunities for head-on or broadside crashes.

There also seems to be some debate on the internet about why roundabouts are now called roundabouts instead of rotaries. Some say the terms are interchangeable, while others believe that the term roundabout should be used to distinguish a “modern roundabout,” from a smaller, old-school rotary.

Apparently modern roundabouts have a different dynamic than rotaries like the ones we used to have on Rte. 2 around Exeter. It’s one of those concepts like differential gears, where I can understand it enough to accept that it works, but would have a hard time trying to explain it. Or maybe it’s like the difference between a donut and a bagel where they superficially resemble one another, but you know the difference as soon as you bite into one.

But, once again, whether we’re talking differentials, donuts, bagels, or roundabouts, I approve.

For one thing, roundabouts create a smooth traffic flow.

And in a world where there constantly seems to be more stop-and-go traffic, more waiting in line for cashiers, more pop-up ads, more construction sites, and more of everything else that gets in your way and blocks your progress, I consider anything that makes life move more smoothly to be a big plus.

I try to make these columns flow smoothly, but it obviously doesn’t always work out that way. My mind tends to be rather twisted, and my thoughts take circuitous paths. I try to give these paths a smooth flow from one seemingly-random point to another, but I just wish I had a little more control over where my thoughts go.

For instance, when I’m playing Lord of the Rings Online, random sit-com references tend to wander into my head and destroy the whole Middle Earth ambiance. Whenever

I have to fight “fell spirits,” I can’t help thinking of them as “Norman Fell spirits,” and picturing them turning and smiling at the camera after cracking a joke in Jack Tripper’s apartment. And when I deal with a faction called “the Eglain,” I tend to have “Seinfeld” flashbacks and think of them as the “Eglain Benes,” or occasionally, the “Eglain Benes Kennedy, Jr.” But I digress. My point is that I sometimes wish I had more control over the flow of my thoughts. When I’m in a roundabout, though, I generally do feel in control. It’s not always completely clear which lane you’re supposed to be in, but there are usually enough lines and signs to give you a good indication. And as long as you stick to the golden rule of yielding to cars already in the roundabout, you’re in pretty good shape.

Furthermore, on those rare occasions when the logic of the lanes catches you out, you can take advantage of one of the roundabout’s best features: if you miss the exit you need, you can simply go around again and give it a second try.

How often in life do you get a chance to do that? How many times do you wish you had the chance to go back and play a different card or choose a different item on the menu?

How many times do you wish you could have taken a second shot at a first date that went wrong? Or better yet, taken a second shot at a first date that went right and led to a relationship that you would have chewed off your foot to escape.

Roundabouts give you a second chance, without the need for foot chewing, unless you’re into that sort of thing.

I suppose I couldn’t write about roundabouts without issuing the following challenge: Just try to go through one without hearing the classic Yes song in your head, and struggling to remember the lyrics. Don’t, however, try to figure out what the lyrics mean, because I think that would cross into the realm of “distracted driving.”

But rather than see Jon Anderson’s lyrics as a distraction, I’ll take them as a call to establish a Zen-like oneness with the road, and follow its flow like a leaf in a stream. Yes, Jon, next time I flow through the Apponaug Circulator, “I’ll be the roundabout.”

Smithfield Student Goes to Washington

These factors combined influenced the scholar-athlete to choose Georgetown over a number of other schools that were interested in him.

nearby Pomfret School, a preparatory boarding school where he went to high school.

Gentile had always been athletic in his youth, but lacrosse was not a sport he played until he was in 7th grade. Growing up, he played baseball, basketball, and in particular hockey, which he liked the most and quickly excelled.

Gentile believes that his hockey background was a big advantage for when he strapped on lacrosse pads for the first time.

“I wasn’t particularly good at lacrosse when I first started,” Gentile admits, “but I kept at it and it was something that became pretty natural.”

So natural, in fact, that after four years playing lacrosse at Pomfret (as well as hockey), he caught the attention of several colleges. Besides Georgetown, the other schools who recruited the U.S. lacrosse All-American and student who earned a 3.63 GPA included Army West Point, Cornell, Boston and Bryant Universities.

“Like hockey,” Gentile says, “lacrosse is a super physical game, maybe even more so. It requires a lot of grit, which is something that has always appealed to me.”

Gentile is regarded as a harsh and tenacious defender who is very talented with the stick. He is a disruptive force, with a knack for getting the ball on the ground, according to Casey Vock, content editor for 3d Rising, a network of writers, scouts and coaches who monitor the lacrosse landscape and evaluate and report on the top talent across the country. He scraps and finds a way to come up with the ball, and is really heady when carrying up the field, able to evade traffic and protect the stick, Vock adds.

Clearly Gentile is a hardworking, hard-hitting player, whose name belies his approach to the game.

“It’s fun to be able to go out there and do what I love, and beat people up in the process” Gentile says.

With a full slate of classes and practicing every day, he is adjusting to life in a major university. It is lot different from Pomfret, where he was one of 350 students, compared to Georgetown which has close to two thousand in his freshman class alone.

“Being on a team has definitely helped me to acclimate to the whole process,” Gentile says. “It’s been fun so far. It’s only been a couple weeks, but it feels like a couple of months.”

Gentile dreams of playing professional lacrosse, but he understands the odds, so he just continues to work hard and have fun. He is studying finance at Georgetown, and if becoming a professional athlete is not in the cards, he aspires to work on Wall Street. With the strong foundation that begins with his family, whom Gentile fully credits for supporting him in his desire to play hockey since he was young, he’s sure to be successful no matter what he does. Whether competing on the manicured grass and field turf surfaces of the lacrosse field or in the concrete jungle of financial district on the streets of lower Manhattan, we wish him luck.

Smithfield’s Cure for the Summertime Blues . . .

Tennis Anyone?

In 1968 a twenty-four year old Smithfield High School teacher and tennis coach approached the Smithfield Recreation Department with the idea of starting a summer tennis program.

A Smithfield summer tradition had been born. Jack Lawrence, that young coach, initially wanted to promote tennis in order to create interest in the high school team. “I couldn’t get kids to go out for the team. Our first year, we had a record of 0 and 12.” Although the first summer had only nine participants playing at the old junior high, the program quickly grew, along with interest in the high school team.

During the seventies, Jack took a break for several years in order to work at Rally Point Tennis Club, but the program continued to expand. Over the past several years, the program has peaked with up to 300 participants, from the “tiny tots” to adults of all ages. Jack attributes much of the success to an extremely supportive recreation department and the creation of the Deerfield Park courts. For many years, the program has included tournaments throughout the summer. This year featured 50 players for mixed matches and a Rally Point tournament which saw about 100 kids, 8 to 15 years old, participating. Along with the tournaments, the program holds a doubles clinic which is conducted by a local college coach. Of course there is an awards day where young players are recognized for honing their skills throughout the summer.

When asked about some of the many players that he has coached, Jack stated, “some of my favorite moments have been seeing kids, who couldn’t play at all, develop into skilled players and achieve success on high school and college teams.” He mentioned Julie Reddy who is currently one of his assistants and the all-time wins leader at Rhode Island College. “It’s a great sport. It’s a skill you’ll have the rest of your life. Look at

me. I’m an antique and I’m still playing.”

Jack also pointed out that there is more to the program than tennis skills. “Learning good sportsmanship and self control is stressed. We always shake hands after a match and ‘temper tantrums’ are not allowed. I give a sportsmanship award to the player who has best exhibited what we expect on the courts.

This year the award went to Gavin Schnieder.”

One may wonder what keeps Jack going after all these years. He will tell you that he truly looks forward to having fun with the kids every summer. “I enjoy seeing the progress in their skills from summer to summer and meeting and working with new kids.”

Jack is quick to give credit to the various recreation directors over the years and his numerous assistants for their support and dedication, but anyone who has been associated with the summer tennis program throughout these many years knows that the primary reason for its tremendous success has been the passion which Jack Lawrence brings to teaching the game he loves. Many thanks to you, Jack.

shaping up to be quite a treat at the movies. First up is the Tom Hardy anti-hero flick, Venom. Those who have been following my column for a while know that I’m pretty picky about superhero movies. In fact, I typically only spend my time with Batman. But Venom has me intrigued for several reasons. First, I trust Tom Hardy’s choice in projects. He’s never starred in anything too cheesy or commercial. Second, it’s directed by Ruben Fleischer, who also directed Zombieland. And third, the supporting cast couldn’t be better. Michelle Williams and Woody Harrelson are seasoned actors who have chosen independent films, so they clearly care about the art of filmmaking.

Chazelle, director of First Man, has a Rhode Island connection? He was born in Providence. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on your movie taste), he was also the director of La La Land – the cringe-worthy musical and self-obsessed love letter to Hollywood. Chazelle worked with Ryan Gosling in both flicks. In First Man, Gosling plays astronaut Neil Armstrong and the film focuses on the road to Apollo 11. Bryan Bishop from The Verge reviewed First Man at the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival and wrote: “… the film disposes with the heroic mythologizing that’s so regularly utilized in film portrayals of NASA and America’s space program. Instead, it tells an incredibly small story —

Armstrong’s struggle to cope with the death of his young daughter.” Bishop goes on to praise Chazelle’s style of filmmaking, but warns that – despite intentions – Armstrong’s character is never fully fleshed out in the film.

Serenity – October 19th - Though I don’t know much about the plot of Serenity or about writer and director Steven Knight (he also wrote Eastern Promises), the cast is stellar. Anne Hathaway plays a wife who hires Matthew McConaughey’s character to kill her husband on a boat in the middle of the ocean. Who doesn’t love a good murder mystery? I also love the fact that McConaughey and Hathaway are reuniting again after Interstellar.

To All the Boys I Loved Before - Finally, Netflix has created an original movie worth watching. Before To All the Boys I Loved Before, I would browse Netflix’s hub of original content in amazement at how many movies are produced that never see the light of day. As a user, it’s certainly interesting to watch how the company adjusts its content mix and which projects are invested in. This latest film is an adaptation of a book by the same name Our Family Serving Your Family

and it’s currently one of the most prominently featured movies on Netflix. It’s about a high school sophomore who writes letters to each of her crushes – letters she never intends for them to see. When her sister mails the letters, her social life gets a lot more interesting. It’s a sweet romantic comedy – one that appeals to more than just high school girls. Word on the street is Netflix will be producing a sequel to follow the book trilogy.

Crazy Rich Asians - A colleague of mine recommended I read the book this movie is based on. It’s the epitome of froth – light, summer reading for someone who doesn’t want to think too much. Based on the book, I would never imagine the movie would be worth seeing.

But this is a rare case where the movie is actually more nuanced and engaging than the book. This is in part because screenwriters Peter Chiarelli and Adel Lim took some creative liberties with the plot to button up the story. The writers also made Rachel Chu’s best friend, Peik Lin, a much-needed source of comic relief. I recommend the film for anyone who can’t resist a good romantic comedy.

October Meteor Showers and Still Time to Observe Mars and Saturn Once again the Perseid meteor shower of August locally succumbed to bad weather. For a few days before and after the peak night of August 12-13 the skies above southern New England were hidden by persistent clouds. These days being an amateur astronomer in Rhode Island and nearby Massachusetts are extremely frustrating. As each successive year comes and goes I am optimistic that a new year can’t be worse than the prior year. Unfortunately as we progress further into a new year I end up eating my words. Some of my associates jokingly blame me and suggest I move to California to potentially end their draught!

Well, I’m not ready or willing to make that journey. Californians suffer from other calamities more severe than clouds preventing folks from exploring the heavens. Despite our often inclement weather for many astronomical events I have

written about, I will continue to provide guidance for observing future events in the hope we enter a more benevolent period of clear skies.

With that said, I wish to inform you that there is still time to observe Mars. The dust that got kicked up into that planet’s atmosphere by its global dust storm is settling out now.

The telescopes at the local observatories have provided fair images of Mars’ south polar cap as well as surface markings.

Back on July 31, Mars was at its closest to the Earth (35.8 million miles) until 2035. The Earth has been quickly moving away from Mars, and on October 1 our two worlds will be 55.6 million miles apart and increasing every day. Mars’ image through our telescopes has been growing smaller, so the earlier you can view our planetary neighbor the more detail you may observe.

Beautiful Saturn will also be visible throughout October as well.

The skies of October do provide stargazers with the opportunity to observe two meteor showers. The first one of the month, a minor display of shooting stars called the Draconids, occurs on the night of October 8-9. I haven’t written about the Draconids very often because the shower currently only produces only ten or less yellowish slow moving meteors per hour.

This year the Earth passes through the stream of debris more recently stripped off short period comet 21P/Giacobini-Zinner, the source of the Draconids, soon after the comet’s relatively close encounter (36 million miles) with our world.

This circumstance could slightly enrich the meteor stream

and provide astronomers with many more shooting stars than normal. However, the forecasts I’ve seen suggest no uptick in numbers. Regardless, I would strongly recommend giving the Draconids a try—just in case! Fortuitously the Moon will be New on peak night, so it will not interfere with observing as many meteors as possible away from light pollution.

Best of all, this meteor display is favorably observed between sunset and midnight when the constellation Draco is highest in the northern sky. All you have to do is find Ursa Major (the Big Dipper asterism). It will be sitting just above the northern horizon.

Draco stretches between Ursa Major and Polaris, the pole star, which is the end star in Ursa Minor (Little Bear), the Little Dipper asterism handle. While the meteors will emanate from this region of the sky, scan east and west up to zenith (directly overhead). These particles are fairly slow moving, hitting our atmosphere at only 12.5 miles per second.

The second shooting star display of the month occurs on the night of October 20-21 when the Earth passes through the remnants of Halley’s Comet. It is called the Orionid meteor shower, because the meteors appear to radiate from within the constellation of Orion the Hunter. That radiant point is not far from the bright red super giant star Betelgeuse which represents Orion’s right shoulder (his perspective). Usually the Orionids are best viewed between midnight and dawn’s early light, but a waxing gibbous Moon (Full on the 24th) won’t set until around 3:38 a.m. local time. This scenario will leave you only about two hours of dark sky time until dawn’s early light. Just be sure to position yourself away from stray light sources to observe as many meteors as possible.

An observer can expect to count about 20 or so yellow and green meteors per hour once the Moon is out of the sky. The Orionid meteors disintegrate in our atmosphere after smashing into it at around 41.6 miles per second. The shooting star display is also noted for producing fireballs that create persistent dust trains as they blaze across the sky.

Despite having observed countless meteors during my 45 years as an amateur astronomer, I never tire of sitting out under a starry sky waiting for “burning rocks” to annihilate themselves in our protective atmosphere. Just be sure to duck if you happen to observe a “stationary” meteor. What’s that? Think about it. It means the meteor is heading straight towards you!

Be sure to check their respective websites for public observing schedules and closures. Ladd Observatory (http://www.brown.edu/Departments/Physics/ Ladd/) in Providence is open every Tuesday night. The Margaret M. Jacoby Observatory at the CCRI Knight Campus in Warwick (http://www.ccri.edu/physics/observatory.htm) is open every clear Thursday night. And don’t forget about our distant (by Rhode Islanders’ perception) associates down at Frosty Drew Observatory (http://frostydrew.org) in Charlestown. They open every clear Friday night.

Palange When my wife and I owned and operated the “Senior Digest” newspaper, we published a feature called Salute to Seniors to celebrate the many significant contributions and accomplishments of men and women age 50 and older. In August 2013, the honoree was Herci Marsden, who was 75 at the time.

A co-founder of the Brae Crest School of Ballet and a driving force behind the State Ballet of Rhode Island (SBRI), Marsden is continuing her efforts to offer opportunities for people of all ages to enjoy classical dancing performances.

Thanks to Marsden’s Project Ballet in Education, senior citizens can take advantage of one such opportunity on Nov. 30, when there will be a performance of “Coppelia” beginning at 10 a.m. at the Park Theatre, 848 Park Ave., Cranston. It will be a “pay-what-you-can event,” and Marsden will guide attendees through the performance, explaining the music, the staging, the physical training of the dancers and fun facts about ballet. Also, patrons will be encouraged to ask questions about the production and ballet.

Marsden calls the SBRI’s production of “Coppelia” a Rhode Island holiday tradition. “Coppelia,” she says, is a witty and enchanting classic story that is considered one of the ballet world’s greatest comedies. The music is by Leo Delibes, with a story centered on the feisty Swanhilda, the pompous Franz, a mysterious toymaker with life-size dancing dolls and a “dazzling” snowy wedding celebration. “ ‘Coppelia’ is a cultural treasure and a ballet that will tickle you with laughter and entertain you as it has entertained audiences for more than 150 years,” Marsden said.

When Marsden and her first husband went separate ways back in the mid-1970s, the prima ballerina faced an uncertain future. She refused to flinch, however, and secured approval to refinance the couple’s real estate holdings, which allowed her to keep their ballet school operating.

“The bank really believed in me because of all I had done since 1958,” Marsden, who came to the United States from Croatia that year, told me. In 1966, Marsden, who had an impressive string of leading roles in ballets such as “Giselle” and “Destiny,” introduced classical ballet to the students at the University of Rhode Island in Kingston, which she taught

in the College of Human Science and Services’ Department of Physical Education Health and Recreation for nearly 30 years. URI was the first college in the Ocean State to offer classical ballet as an accredited course that helped so many student-athletes enhance their skills.

Marsden and her children frequently watched televised sports, and after a good play on the basketball court or the football or soccer field, the matriarch would frequently make comments such as, “‘I taught him to jump like that,’” her daughter, Ana Fox, told me back in 2013.

Fox and her daughter, Shana Marceau Fox, work with Marsden at Brae Crest and the SBRI. Marsden is artistic director and choreographer for the company while Ana is the assistant to the director and resident choreographer and Shana is a resident choreographer. They love and admire Herci, who puts in many hours at work despite her age.

“I love it. It is my way of life. … I will never stop,” Herci said of running Brae Crest and the ballet troupe when I interviewed her for the Salute to Seniors story. It was obvious that same fire burns inside her daughter and granddaughter. “It is our passion, our dream. Our passion chose us, and what we chose to do with it is the school and the State Ballet of Rhode Island,” said Shana, who was the first female member of the Lincoln High School hockey team.

“I don’t know anything else,” Ana said. “When I’m doing this, I’m alive. It’s my life. … If I’m not doing this, I’m out to dinner with my husband and I am talking about something pertaining to the school or the state ballet; or I’m out for a brisk walk in the morning and I have one of those aha moments about something here.”

According to Ana, the SBRI is the lone semi-professional civic regional ballet company in Rhode Island and one of the oldest in the United States. The company was founded in 1960, and its mission is to create, present, preserve and extend the revered repertoire of classical dancing to the public through exciting performances and educational programs.

I salute Herci again and hope patrons appreciate what she has accomplished while working with her dedicated daughter and granddaughter.

Obituaries Ask an Expert What is a Bulkhead?

By Tom Lopatosky Bulkheads are the set of doors that lead to the basement of a building (most often located on the rear or on one of the sides of the building).

Sometimes people refer to them as “Cellar Doors” or “Basement Doors”.

Typically they are made out of metal; though there are many that still exist that are made out of wood.

If they are made out of wood, it is very rare to go long periods of time without some type of maintenance issue. However, wood bulkheads can be made by a skilled carpenter so that they efficiently shed water and do not rot out as quickly as one might think.

After all, ‘back in the day’ I would venture to say that wooden bulkheads were much more commonplace than they are today.

Whenever possible, we try and steer people toward metal (steel) bulkheads. Assuming they are properly constructed,

there should really not be an issue for decades as long as the metal bulkheads are maintained appropriately.

Metal bulkheads can frequently be replaced with a standard-sized bulkhead.

Many times though, a custom-made bulkhead has to be made by a metalsmith in order to properly accommodate the existing footprint of the home.

Local Man Continues Popular RI Sporting Pastime

By Paul Lonardo Mike Antonucci, who grew up in North Providence and is now living in Johnson, has been a wrestling fan all his life. His father used to be the head of security at the Providence Civic Center at a time when the WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment, Inc.) used to come to town quite often. His father would take me backstage to meet many of the acts who performed there, including the professional wrestlers.

“I’ve been around the product for as long as I can remember,” Mike says. “I love the backstage environment just as much as the in-ring environment, so I always knew I was destined to somehow be a part of this business. When I developed heart trouble at a young age, it kept me from being an in-ring performer, so I did the next best thing; creating XWA.” Mike started XWA (Xtreme Wrestling Alliance) in 2000, and it has been going strong ever since. Over that span of time, many former WWE stars have come through their doors, and some even became XWA champions, such as Big Van Vader, Rhyno, Tommaso Ciampa and Mike Kanellis.

“I pride myself that XWA is still around after 18 years, and has remained a family friendly product. We also take great pride in not allowing just anyone to ‘play’ wrestler. Our athletes go through rigorous training at my school.”

fied time. Of course, no matter how much bigger a challenger might be, the strongman would have helpers who would resort to cheating if necessary in order to ensure his victory. Eventually, carnies realized they could make more money off the crowd than the entry fees of the fighters. They soon began accepting wagers on the fights, which were always fixed. Sometimes, the local fighter would even be in on the fix, which only served to further hype up the fight. These early wrestlers used fake names and played up the animosity of the crowd to encourage betting. Around the turn of the previous century, promoters put wrestling events in arenas, much like boxing. Over the years, many different individual promoters held wrestling events. Although there were championship belts in existence, none of them had any real authority until promoters got together to form a loose organization called the National Wrestling Association (NWA). This was the start of the modern era of professional wrestling. After WWII, the NWA divided wrestling into regional leagues, or federations. A gentleman’s agreement was in place not to steal each other’s talent, or expand their arena shows into another league’s region. The Northeast federation, known as the World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF), was started by Vince McMahon, Sr. in the early 1960s.

in the country, many Rhode Island fans of the sport poured into Jack Witschi’s Sports Arena just across the line in North Attleboro MA. The facility on Route 1 had 1,600 seats, though capacity could be stretched to 2,000 for really big shows. There were always great Friday night match ups, where for the price of admission you could witness the WWWF stars of the day, such as Chief Jay Strongbow, Haystacks Calhoun, Toro Tanaka, Gorilla Monsoon, Killer Kowalski, Gorgeous George, Mr. Fugi, Ken Patera, and many others. Witschi’s was an interactive event, where fans would become part of the action by hampering the villains, or vociferously jeering the referee’s decisions.

The building burnt down in 1979, but today you can experience that same brand of excitement and entertainment at the XWA facility in West Warwick.

If you’re someone who enjoys watching raucous, over-thetop wrestling bouts, cheering on “good guys” and jeering “bad guys,” then XWA is must-see action. Or, if you are looking for a wrestling school because you always wanted to develop wrestling skills and test them in the ring, you need not look any further. The XWA Wrestling Kingdom Training Facility features head trainers “Miracle” Mike Bennett, TNA (Total Nonstop Action) wrestling star, and Matt Taven, ROH (Ring of Honor) wresting star.

How about being a referee or a manager? XMA can get you on your way to realizing these ambitions, as well.

The names you will likely encounter at an XMA bout include, The Bulldozer Matt Tremont, Warbeard Hanson, Team Tremendous, Devin Blaze and Joey Bones, but have all the theatricals, excitement and athleticism you would expect with topnotch wrestling.

XWA rents their facility, as well as their wrestlers to host private events in your own backyard to entertain guests at a party you are hosting. Or if you want to run your own event and need a ring, chairs, sound system and even a steel cage, they can do that as well.

“For me, the most rewarding this that we do is put smiles on faces,” Mike says. He also enjoys seeing a student who has worked hard for six months to a year, and going out and making their debut to the roar of the crowd. “It is one of the most rewarding things I will ever do in this business. We make fans dreams come true by meeting their heroes. We make students dreams come true by giving them the tools and instructions on how to become superstars and heroes. We just make dreams come true. Period. And I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

The XWA Event Center is located at 3 Bridal Ave in West Warwick. It runs weekly events on Thursdays nights for just $5. The events showcase their student wrestlers as well as some of their regular roster of talent. They open their doors at 7pm.

Navigating Healthcare

By Diane L. Marolla, LICSW Recently, I was asked by a consumer to write about men’s health, specifically prostate health. Before I did my research, I thought about the topic of men’s health a great deal. In all the health-related news feeds that I get daily, I rarely see this covered. I thought, was I just ignoring the subject or is men’s health not talked about enough? As I always do when I prepare for writing this monthly article, I went straight to the research, and here is what I found: • According to menshealthcongress.com, men are 24% less likely than women to have visited a doctor within the past year.

• Also according to menshealthcongress.com, heart disease is the number one killer of men. Cancer is number two.

• According to statista.com, mental health issues are also common among men. Suicide is the number seven leading cause of death.

• Women on average live longer than men.

As I thought about the topic of men’s health more, I thought of how I manage my own health. I see a woman doctor whose practice specializes in seeing only women. I have always been focused on taking care of myself, ensuring that my pap smears and pelvic exams are done. Because I am at risk for breast cancer (my mother died from complications of breast cancer in 1992 at the age of 65), I ensure that I get my mammograms faithfully.

I am in tune with the topic of osteoporosis and how to prevent it. In terms of exercise (which I feel I don’t do enough of ), I continue to work with a personal trainer on strength training. I see my Primary Care Physician faithfully every year. I am honest with her about anything that has changed (in fact, I make a list for her every year so that I don’t forget anything). I talk to my friends and compare notes. I also read on the topic of women’s health all the time.

are well versed in? Do you feel comfortable talking about your health with friends and family? Do you have a doctor?

If the answer to these questions is no, here are some easy tips for you to start thinking more about your health: • If you don’t have a Primary Care Physician (PCP), be sure to get one as soon as possible. If you need recommendations regarding who is accepting new patients, and who takes your health insurance, call your insurance company or go to their website. All insurance companies have provider listings on line. Any provider who is listed on a health insurance company website has to take new patients. If you call an office, and they say they are not taking new patients, be sure to contact your insurance company immediately and tell them.

• Make sure you see your PCP annually. Talk to your doctor honestly about how you are feeling physically and mentally.

Do not be embarrassed to talk with them. Trust me, they have heard everything, and they are in the business of taking care of people.

• No matter if you are young or old, male or female, key components to a healthy life include getting enough sleep, maintaining a healthy diet, exercising, and minimizing stress.

• Be honest with your doctor about your mental health. Do you feel depressed? Are you drinking too much? Your doctor will ask you these questions. If you come home from work

every night and have to drink three beers before you go to bed, be sure to discuss this with your doctor.

Whereas women pay extra attention to their breast and reproductive health, men, you have a prostate to take care of. Your prostate is a gland that is part of your reproductive system. As you age, it can get larger and can cause urination and sexual problems. According to WebMD, 8 out of 10 men develop an enlarged prostate and 30% of men will find symptoms bothersome.

According to The American Cancer Society, 1 in 9 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer. It is the second most common cancer among men, after skin cancer, and the second leading cause of cancer death in American men, behind lung cancer. If you are having problems urinating, be sure to discuss this with your doctor. Treatment options for prostate-related issues range from lifestyle changes to medications or surgery. Additionally, your doctor can use a variety of tests to diagnose the root cause of your problems. Smithfield Police Department Promotions Announced On Tuesday, August 28, 2018, the Smithfield Police Department held a ceremony at the Smithfield Senior Center for the promotion of four officers.

These promotions were effective on July 1st, 2018.

Police Chief Richard P. St. Sauveur presented each officer with a certificate of promotion in front of a crowd of family, friends, fellow officers and local officials.

Captain E. Eric Dolan was promoted to the rank of Deputy Chief.

Dep. Chief Dolan is a 24-year veteran and has served in many capacities over the years.

Lieutenant Jason Digrado was promoted to the rank of Captain.

Capt. Digrado is an 18-year veteran of the department.

Sergeant Cory Carpenter was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant.

Lt. Carpenter is an 18-year veteran, formerly assigned as the Operations Sergeant.

Officer Paul Gorman was promoted to the rank of Sergeant.

Sgt. Gorman is a 15-year veteran of the department.
