We’ve Moved!

Entering into the driveway of 543 Putnam Pike from Sprague Street off of Route 44 in Greenville is a smoky grey, carved owl that sits atop a wooden perch, ready to greet workers and visitors to the new office of The Smithfield Times.

Publisher John J. Tassoni Jr. was looking at another piece of property down the road when the wise owl beckoned him to take a look at the vacant house that he seemed to be guarding.

One look and Tassoni was captivated by the 96-year-old house and all its potential.

“We outgrew our old office after just one year in

The office moved on Jan. 30, from the busy highway of Route 102 to this quaint Dutch Colonial, which Tassoni painstakingly remodeled while maintaining much of the original structure, including the tongue-in-groove hardwood floors, rustic cabinetry, wooden ceiling beams, French doors, and large brick fireplace with oak breakfront, and corner curios.

New windows, fresh paint, new heating elements, and updating to electrical and fire codes were also part of the process to give the nearly 100-year-old house a bit of a facelift.

“It is an office building with the charm and charisma of a home,” Tassoni said. “It is a warm and welcoming place,

just the way we want our readers to feel when they read our publications.”

A printer by trade, Tassoni purchased Your Smithfield Magazine in October 2014, changing the name to The Smithfield Times, operating out of the office on George Washington Highway.

Tassoni also publishes Common Ground, a statewide monthly newspaper dedicated to work issues, working families, businesses, and unions. In addition, Tassoni hosts two radio shows on AM Talk Radio 790: Common Ground Radio, Mondays 4-5 p.m., a complement to the newspaper with discussion on the business-related topics; and Recovery Radio, Mondays 3-4 p.m., which provides useful information to people suffering from addictions.

Body shaming declares war on bodies, ourselves

“Do you even eat?” An acquaintance once asked me with a coy smile on her face.

As I stood there in shock, a few thoughts ran through my mind. Without trying to make a face of pure rage and confusion, I thought about responding with, “Yes, believe it or not, I just had a piece of pizza.” But instead I smiled and awkwardly said, “Thanks!” and walked away.

Sadly, I think this person was trying to give me a “compliment” on my body, but to me it was more of an insult if the intent of the message is really dissected. First of all, there are ways far kinder than such an abrupt and honestly random question.

Next, one can never really know if the reason a person’s body looks a certain way is due to a personal or health related choice that this individual would rather not share.

Coming from the point of view of a rather thin, young female, I know it sounds crazy that I would take offense to someone complimenting my body, but when you can tell there is harmful or even purposeful hatred behind a comment, it makes you feel very uncomfortable.

For weeks I replayed that seemingly unimportant moment over again and again in my mind. Why do we even make comments about the bodies of others in the first place? If someone is too skinny, they’re automatically deemed “sick.” If someone is overweight, we automatically assume that they have no regard for his or her health. A woman who is curvier might strive to be the stick-thin model, while the same svelte woman might wish she had a little more meat on her bones.

Dove, the soap company, teamed with Twitter to mine social media for body shaming data in conjunction with the publicity surrounding the 2015 Oscar Awards and found that four out of every five negative beauty tweets in 2014 were written by women, women wrote more than 5 million negative tweets in 2014 and women are 50 percent more likely to say something negative, rather than something positive about themselves on social media.

“It is important to promote positive body image because even relatively minor body concerns may lead to exercise avoidance in woman; use of

anabolic steroids and other drugs to try to increase muscularity, particularly in men; and unhealthy eating behaviors, especially in women,” according to psychology Professor Sarah Grogan, Manchester Metropolitan University in England, in an article in “Sex Roles – A Journal of Research” in 2010.

What it comes down to is: many of us are unhappy with the way we look, so we use harmful words and messages towards others as a defense.

Positive and negative messages about our appearance are putting us at war with our bodies.

Dr. Christina Tortolani, is a Staff Psychologist in the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Rhode Island Hospital in the Hasbro Partial Hospital Program. She treats children, adolescents, and young adults with eating disorders and other body image issues.

“What we pay attention to gains importance.

If others are making comments about our bodies, we learn that our appearance matters—a lot,” Tortolani says. “We are bombarded with images and ideas around an unattainable ideal of thinness. The

message: If you look a certain way, then you will be happy, successful, and fulfilled. We are socialized to place more importance on our bodies than on our own worth as people.”

Enter: body shamDr. Christina Tortolani ing Without even delving into the lives of those people around me, I can find examples of this in the media instantaneously. One that sticks out to me the most, and is upsetting, is one of the more recent lingerie campaigns for plus-size women. Instead of embracing the fact that these women are blessed to have their body types—just as much as the “typical” bra and panty model—their marketing ploy was the “#ImNoAngel” message, one that puts them into the metaphorical ring up against the more popular “Angel” seen in Victoria’s Secret advertisements. Both groups of women are equally as beautiful, so why objectify one for being less so than the other? This also goes hand-in-hand with the commonly shared and re-tweeted phrase all over social media, “Real Women Have Curves.”

It is fabulous to empower women in every way, but what you’re saying is that females whose bodies aren’t as voluptuous should feel like less of a woman. These ideas are what are making our views of self-image plummet to the depths of negativity.

For a young Smithfield woman, these derogatory comments went as far as affecting not only her views on herself, but her family’s, as well.

Hailey Grzych, 22, moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in fashion design a few years ago and has recently started her own line of lingerie.

She frequently makes trips back to home to visit friends and family, but some people aren’t as welcoming as she’d like.

“Ever since I moved away, tons of people have made the comment that I’ve had a drug problem and that’s why I’ve lost weight,” Grzych shares.

Did these people see me, think ‘that girl is skinny,’ realize I live in Hollywood, decide they’re going to be mean for no reason at all, and the only comment they could come up with is that I do drugs?!”

For Gryzch, this is more than just a blow at her body image; it’s an insult to the hard work and dedication that she has put into living out a lifelong dream. The worst part is that she wasn’t the only one on the receiving end of these comments—her family members were questioned, too.

“It’s physically sickening to hear my mom ask me if I’m doing drugs,” Grzych says. “What’s even more sickening is when I know my brother hears something about me that’s untrue but we don’t even talk about it. You don’t realize the other issues people are dealing with behind the scenes, especially mental health-wise. Your one mean comment about someone’s body can really have a dangerous spiral of consequences for them.”

Instead of focusing on our overall self-esteem, things like how we think and feel, we put priority on body esteem, making the main focus only our outward appearance. This is concerning because it has the potential to develop into body image dis-

satisfaction and negative, critical self-talk, Tortolani said.

“Such self-talk could and frequently does lean to unhealthy dieting and exercise behavior, which puts one at risk for developing an eating disorder, which are dangerous, life-threatening illnesses,” Dr. Tortolani says.

Body shaming doesn’t just come from strangers.

It can come from family members, too.

Shannon Caliri, 22, of Lincoln, knows that first hand. Caliri’s body went through a few major changes while she grew up and some people in her life made sure she knew about it. Whether it was when she lost a ton of weight during puberty or when she gained a few pounds after that, comments were always being spewed from every direction.

“The first person to point [my weight gain] out to me was either my grandfather or my dad, I can’t remember which one,” Caliri says, “but I specifically remember one of them saying, ‘Wow, you’re really getting a belly there!’”

Overtime, these statements made Caliri question her body type. Was her body supposed to look different, she wondered? She started feeling

as though she was flawed for not having that “perfect” or “ideal” body. Since she was curvier from a young age, Caliri also dealt with comments about her breasts starting as far back as middle school.

“If I had a dollar for every time someone said, ‘you really shouldn’t be wearing that,’ I’d be a millionaire by now,” Caliri jokes. “I would walk into school with a pretty neutral top on, but because I had huge boobs that were extremely noticeable, it made the shirt appear ‘inappropriate.’ Getting told I didn’t have the ‘right’ body type to wear certain things got really frustrating for me. Why could a thin girl wear the same dress and be told she looks ‘cute,’ but I look ‘inappropriate’?”

Society is sometimes obsessed with telling us what to look like, and Caliri feels strongly about embracing the fact that we are all beautiful, instead of bashing each other in every way possible.

“Society tells us that fat is ugly, flat-chested isn’t sexy, and you have to be thin but still have womanly curves to be considered attractive,” says Caliri.

“Because bigger women are put down so much for their weight, I think it makes them feel better to tear down the thinner individuals around them, make these women feel bad about themselves…

and then no one wins!”

One 25-year-old female from Smithfield, who asked not to be identified, agrees that sometimes, even when she knew it was wrong, she’d find herself shaming the bodies of those women she strived to emulate.

“Growing up, I was always teased and called fat and constantly made fun of,” she said. “You would figure I would know how it feels to be hurt, but I still sometimes made comments to myself like, ‘Why are skinny people working out so much at the gym when they’re already skinny?’ I also have an under active thyroid condition which makes it more difficult for me to lose weight.”

This young woman admits to sometimes wondering why she was born with her body type, a body that she works so hard to have, while others can seemingly do nothing yet still have that “perfect” figure.

“What I told myself when I was body shamed is that I am lucky to have two arms, two legs, 10 fingers, and 10 toes,” she said. “I’m lucky I can run on the treadmill and I am lucky I can hear these people body shame because I am lucky enough to talk to answer them back.”

Dr. Tortolani helps her patients practice “mindfulness-based strategies,” which allow them to find acceptance and compassion within themselves.

These activities help patients to focus more on what they can contribute, rather than what they look like. Individuals will feel more confident and develop a sense of purpose.

“Remember, your body is only one aspect of you,” Tortolani said. “Focus on other aspects of yourself that provide meaning and joy. Try to change your ‘cognitive channel’ away from negative self-talk, giving up on the goal of being ‘perfect.’ Become more media literate. Cast a critical eye on what you see, read, and hear, questioning what subtle messages about body image, health, and happiness are being communicated.”

Jolene Andrews, 31, of Attleboro, Mass. wasn’t able to use these positive self-talk mechanisms during a low point in her life. Body shaming had an adverse affect on her health, causing her to suffer from an eating disorder for a major portion of her life. Having always felt low body image, Andrews was diagnosed with anorexia four years ago. This diagnosis confused everyone around her because she had what seemed like a “great life.”

“I have a wonderful family and my parents are the most generous and caring parents anyone could ask for,” Andrews said, “but no one around me could understand depression or anorexia.”

Andrews felt depressed as far back as she can remember. Around age eight, she tried taking medication from her family’s bathroom cabinet to end her life, but her attempt did not come to fruition.

Flash forward to her late teens, Andrews started dealing with her eating disorder, and thankfully saw a therapist who helped her find her way.

“Defeating anorexia was not an easy task and I do not wish that upon my worst enemy,” Andrews said. “I had to slowly start eating again. By going to therapy and learning more about myself, I was able to overcome it.”

We’ve all felt victimized or have caused others to feel belittled at some point in our lives. It is up to us to change the norm from negative to positive, to embrace those around us for their individual and unique beauty, and to just stop shaming others! The age-old aphorism taken from the Gospels of Luke and Matthew still apply: “Treat others the same way you want them to treat you.”

Haven’t been there, never did that

By Laurence J. Sasso, Jr. We have become accustomed to Rhode Island being used as a unit of measure. You’ve probably heard it.

You could fit 173 Rhode Islands into Texas. Florida could accommodate 42 of our state within its borders.

It might be small, but The State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations does have the longest name. At 48 miles from top to bottom and 37 miles wide, it might be reasonable to assume if you come from here everybody knows everybody else. In a pocket-sized territory haven’t we all been every place and done everything there is to do?

Well, the Ocean State may be

considered small (I prefer compact), but it’s not the backyard. Despite its 1,214 square mile size, Rhode Island has 400 miles of coast line which wend along the shore line and the meandering edges of our magnificent Narragansett Bay. There’s a lot more than meets the eye.

Yet, it sounds as if a life-long resident of the state has likely been exposed to all that matters . . . multiple times.

However, as the cartoon character Little Abner was wont to say, “it hain’t necessarily so.”

In the present instance, for example, this writer has never been to Block Island. Nantucket, yes (several times),

Martha’s Vineyard, uh-huh, Staten Island, yup, but never BI. Haven’t been to the Great Swamp either.

Cedar Swamp, check. Great Swamp, nope.

Similarly, I have visited Rocky Point Park, Colt State Park, Roger Williams Park, Slater Park, and Wilcox Park in Westerly and a few others, but I never went to Crescent Park.

Been to Moonstone Beach (with my clothes on), Misquamicut with its legendary undertow, and many others, but not Matunuck. Went to the top of a couple of mountains in New Hampshire and Maine, but never hiked in (you go in from Route 6, not up) to Rhode Island’s highest peak, Jerimoth Hill in Foster.

Everybody who has lived here for any length of time has probably toured a Newport Mansion. Not me. I’ve gone to Blithewold in Bristol numerous times, visited the John Brown house in Providence, and the Smith-Appleby House right here in Smithfield countless times, but I haven’t crossed the thresholds of the famed “cottages.”

Staying with Newport, I have driven around Ocean Drive often, and once I walked dangerously far out on the surf -washed rocks off Brenton Point in Newport with a friend, but I haven’t done the Cliff Walk.

I tried skiing at Diamond Hill when you could do that, but I’ve never been to Yawgoo Valley. Have been a spectator at the Bristol Fourth of July Parade a few times, but not the Ancient and Horribles in Chepachet.

Given my background in journalism (with some side trips into academia) I have been on the campus of every

college and university in the state except one. Sorry, Salve Regina.

Then there was the time I went to a church supper in Rice City. I’m pretty sure I’ve been to almost every city and town, but I can’t say I’m aware of ever having been in Wyoming, R.I. Speaking of church-related things, I have been to the First Baptist Church in America in Providence, the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul, the former Episcopal Cathedral of St. John, Temple Beth El, but never the very historic Truro Synagogue in Newport.

As for knowing everybody in a small state like ours, there is some truth to that. If you lived in Illinois or California or New York, you might never see your governor or senators or even your congressman or congresswoman unless you attended a campaign event.

Here you can run into Senator Jack Reed in a restaurant or the bookstore or see the mayor at a coffee shop. The late Buddy Cianci seemed to thrive on meeting people, as the saying went, “at the opening of an envelope.”

It probably isn’t good to use myself as a yardstick in this area, anyway. Due to the nature of my work, I probably interviewed every governor, senator, and congress person going back 30 years or more. Yet, even though she came from Smithfield, I have never met Governor Raimondo. Go figure.

Henry David Thoreau, the 19th century philosopher, essayist, and poet wrote: “I have travelled a good deal in Concord.” I bet there was a tavern or a fishing hole he missed, though.

RIC students covered the New Hampshire primary as part of NBC 10’s Twitter Team

By Jane Fusco It has been 100 years since the first New Hampshire primary was held in 1916, but for 11 Rhode Island College students, it was a chance to see how the presidential election process begins.

Their trip to the New Hampshire primary campaign from Feb. 3-7 culminated months of intense political engagement, as part of a campaign course at RIC taught by political communication professors Valerie Endress and Kay Israel. The primary was February 9 with Democrat Bernie Sanders and Republican Donald Trump outpolling their opponents.

When the course began last November, the students were assigned a candidate’s campaign to follow through news reports, blogs, and social media up to the New Hampshire primary. On the ground in the Granite State in the days leading up to the voting, they saw the candidates’ triumphs, pitfalls,

Ariana Morocco, 21 of Plainville, Mass., said this trip gave her a better understanding of the historical significance of the New Hampshire primary. “Knowing that we were in a place where history was made was incredible,” she said.

As part of their coursework, the students offered their observations, photos and videos from New Hampshire, and were posted on the NBC 10 website. According to NBC 10’s Scott Allen, Online News Producer, the students’ page with their tweets received over 3,450 page views. detached candidates. However, in person, they seem genuine and have a great sense of humor,” he said.

The person behind the politician impressed Josh Faiola, 20, of Warwick. “I saw Jeb Bush cry, I saw Ted Cruz tell some jokes, and I even saw Carly Fiorina dance. I saw the hard work that goes on in a campaign office, and I saw how much pizza is consumed,” he said.

Valentina Agudelo, 21, from Cumberland said, “Being able to listen to the candidates in person also helped me get a better understanding of their stances on issues.” She said that some days, she’d follow the candidates to as many as five events.

Victoria Cordeiro, 21, of North Smithfield, said she was able to shake hands with Ted Cruz and other candidates, and sat about 10 feet away from Donald Trump at one of his rallies.

For Kim Morman, of North Kingston, the trip was more personal. She said she told a reporter from TIME that her choice for the next Commanderin-Chief would be someone who could protect

the country and her family. “My husband is on his way back over to Afghanistan in a few months,” she said.

Endress said that even if the students didn’t necessarily support the candidate they were following, they still developed a personal connection and often became emotionally involved, getting upset at drops in polls, missteps, or proudly boasting about successes.

As a class, the students followed the campaigns on a private, dedicated Facebook page where they posted news articles, videos and commentary.

Several national and international media outlets interviewed the RIC students, including TIME, The Washington Post, Reuters, NBC and ABC, and television stations from Sweden, France and Spain.

Endress said that many of the students’ Snapchat posts went national and received over hundreds of thousands of hits. The most viewed snapchat was of Lindsay Graham with over 680,000 views.

Talking to the media, said Joseph Sherry, 21, of Rehoboth, Mass., tested his political expertise.

“After it was over, I felt more confident about what

I have learned in the course,” he said.

Sherry also said that the trip gave him an access point to observe and understand how political campaigns work. “This trip taught me to never make an assumption about a candidate because of a label, but instead learn about their policies and character,” he said.

For many of the students who travelled to the primary, this year will be their first time voting in a presidential election.

“I came into this (primary) thinking I knew who I was going to vote for, but to my surprise, that changed,” said Cordeiro.

Endress has been escorting politically engaged students to the New Hampshire primary since 1984, when Ronald Reagan was vying for his second presidential term against Walter Mondale.

She said that she still hears from students that she accompanied on that first trip 32 years ago. “They say that the New Hampshire trip was a defining moment in their interest in politics.”

“I potentially met the 45th President of the United States while campaigning in the nation’s first primary,” Morrocco said.

The Madness

By Peg Brown Blame the “madness” on a Canadian—March Madness that is! The inventor of the sport of basketball was indeed a Canadian— James Naismith. The oldest child of Scottish immigrants to Canada, orphaned as a young child, raised by his grandmother in a strict Presbyterian home (later to become a Presbyterian minister), Naismith immigrated to Springfield, MA. During his first year as a physical education instructor of Springfield College (1890-1891), he invented basketball. It was only after Naismith was instructed by the head of the Springfield YMCA where he was moonlighting, to develop an indoor

game (in just two weeks) that would quiet a very rowdy group of young men, that the idea was born. Part of his task was to develop a game that would “make it fair for all players and not too rough.” Let’s put that another way—he could never have envisioned Big East basketball before the big money of football decimated what some might say was the best league in college ball. But I digress.

We did have “March Madness” during the 1960s—we just didn’t know it. Basketball looked entirely different in the early 1960s—so too did the NCAA tournament.

in a gymnasium and , at my high school, the audience was seated in the auditorium—where you could only truly see the action if it was at the stage end of the court. There were no baggy shorts, no three point shots and no shot clock. There also weren’t AAU leagues and scouts to identify and begin to recruit young men who were “stars” in junior high or high school. McDonald’s AllAmerican team was well in the future, and remember, girls’ basketball was in those days—on the intramural schedule (pre Title IX). Schools were not NIKE schools or Adidas schools, at least at the high school level. I never knew anyone who went to basketball camp “away” to hone their skills and become a better prospect for a Division I scholarship. We did occasionally have a good athlete attend a fifth year at a prep school to “bulk up,” or “study up” to be more attractive to a major program, but that was the exception.

Just as there were vast differences in the game as we know it today, there was also less emphasis on the “madness” of spring college basketball. There was no Dick Vitale or bracketology—no computers to do detailed analysis of every statistic of every team—in fact, the only way you could check on a

game during working hours was to clandestinely turn on a radio or find a small television tucked away in some obscure corner of the school.

However, make no mistake, there were always serious gambling groups filling out their brackets—many of our coaches. At my high schools, where Dad was a coach, it was a much closed group—seriously. The mostly male faculty members would gather in some small conference room near the athletic department and with paper and pen fill out a bracket that one of them had run off the mimeograph machine—(remember, the bleeding blue ink and that wonderful smell!)

There was not open seating at this table—that is to say, the places at the table were limited and someone had to resign, move or die before there would be a vacancy. The group met at exactly 2 p.m. on the appointed day. If you weren’t in your seat at the designated time—you were forever out of the competition. (And, I’m serious—there were actually faculty members every year who were ready to slip into a space—imitating the movements seen in musical chairs when one chair had been removed).

Following an elaborate formula, the brackets would be completed with much discussion about process,

fairness and who was going to get stuck choosing the number 16th seed.

I was not privy to how much money was actually at stake—but I’m going to guess it was somewhere in the range of $5 per participant.

The NCAA Division I Men’s Tournament had been part of the American culture since 1939 (Oregon beat Ohio State that year), but the Women’s’ Division I NCAA Tournament was not instituted until the 1981-82 season. Louisiana Tech beat Cheyney State that year— never to win again as Tennessee and Connecticut dominated the competition for the next three decades.

Remember those $5 bets I alluded to in the 1960s? Today’s coaches and players could have never envisioned how lucrative the NCAA Tournament would become—and how disruptive it can be in today’s world. Hold onto your wallets for some recent statistics: • TV ad revenue for the NCAA men’s’ tournament exceeded $1.1 billion last year—just slightly less that the total for the NFL postseason—including the Super Bowl (Kantar Media, 3/18/15); • In 2014 the NCAA Division I men’s teams participating spent an average of $5 million per team: Total: almost $350 million (The New Yorker-3/14); • Championship teams spend closer to $7 million; in 2014 Louisville had spent $15.6 million; Duke$15.1 million (The Motley Fool, 3/19/2014); • In the last decade, Louisville, which also spends more on its men’s basketball program than any other university, received over $40 million in revenue from tournament participation. Over the same time frame, Providence College received over $11 million in revenue from tournament appearances (netting just under $5 million.)

• According to CBS/Turner sports which has an exclusive 14 year contract with the NCAA, just under $190 million will be split among the conferences—for each round the team makes, the NCAA distributes approximately $250,000 to the school’s home conference; CBS and Turner Broadcasting pay the NCAA $10.8 billion for the exclusive broadcast rights (M. Edelman, Forbes Magazine, 3/18/14); • $12 billion—estimated amount gambled on the NCAA tournament last year. Of this total, only $100 million was gambled through legal bookies; an estimated $3 billion was bet in office pools (Business Time, 3/19/14).

Dad—move over, I’m taking your place at that table.

Author’s Notes: Estimated amount companies expect to lose for every unproductive work hour during the first week of the Tournament--$1.2 billion—based on a Microsoft survey that found about 50 million Americans participate in March Madness pools (Naples Daily News, 4/12/14); next big discussion for the NCAA—with all of this money, when will we begin compensating college basketball players? According to Forbes Magazine estimates, based on expected revenue, college players should earn about $340,000 to play in the 2016 NCAA Tournament. After all, according to USA Today Bloomberg Business reports (3/18/15) the average salary for a men’s Division I basketball coach is $1.4 million; 35 coaches in the 2015 tournament made seven figures or more before bonuses; Mike Krzyzewski pulls in the most--$9.7 million.

It is March, so it must be time for green beer and zeppoles

By Brittni Henderson Not much happens in March—except two pretty cool holidays with tons of cultural influences and social celebrations.

It’s one of those months that aren’t considerably pleasurable when it comes to weather—it can be really cold or it might rain every day. There are 31 days and not one of them is a legal holiday so there are no long weekends. Fortunately, there are two days that are special to many of us. Although we may not get these two days off from work, there are plenty of things to do to commemorate them. These holidays both come from religious origin, but many of us have created our own celebratory variations.

Smack dab in the middle of the month of March are St. Patrick’s Day and St. Joseph’s Day. Two days that represent two very important figures in Irish and Italian heritage. Both holidays hold a special importance to residents of Rhode Island because of the large population of Irish and Italians in this state. Irish and Italian Americans, and even some who aren’t, gather their family members and friends to observe these days in their own unique ways.

By the numbers, 17.9 percent claim Irish heritage in Rhode Island, reports the U.S. Census Bureau, making the clan the second most populous ethnic group, behind, you guessed it, the Italians who compose 18.4 percent of our population. So, for two days of the month of March more than one-third of Rhode Island’s populace is apt to be downing green beer and/or zeppoles.

Locally, by zip code, those claiming Irish ancestry compose 16.8 percent of Smithfield’s population with the clan strongest in Greenville at 19.2 percent of the residents. Italian heritage is claimed by 24.2 percent of Smithfield’s population. By the same measure, in Johnston, 13.4 percent are Irish and 49 percent claim Italian roots – the second largest in any American community; Lincoln, 14.7 percent Irish, and 16.2 percent Italian; North Smithfield, the Irish and Italians are tied at 14.8 percent On March 17, Sue Mills and her family make it a point to attend the St. Patrick’s Day parade held annually in West Warwick. Mills’ cousins and

uncle are members of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick, a group that raises money for the parade every year. This has been life-long tradition for Mills, starting from when she was a child and extending into the lives of her children today. Although it may not be the most unique of traditions, Mills enjoys it because it’s always fun and family-friendly every year.

With shamrocks and head-to-toe green outfits raring to go, Kathleen Pari looks forward to St. Patrick’s Day each year, too. Pari’s mother’s side of the family is 100 percent Irish. Her great-grandparents immigrated to America from Ireland, so her family’s roots run deep. Her family cooks the go-to meal of corned beef and cabbage and she makes sure that she hits every Irish pub that she can.

Amanda Booth and her fiancé Joe Brown unknowingly started their St. Patrick’s Day tradition at a Boston restaurant three years ago. On what they thought was just a nice weekend date a few days before March 17, they realized that they were amongst a group of people celebrating St. Patrick’s Day. After finishing their burgers, they decided to head to another bar in the area to keep the celebration going. At the time, Booth and Brown were newly dating, but now that they are on their way to becoming husband and wife, this day holds major importance to them. Every year, they repeat this tradition on the weekend before St. Patrick’s Day just as a special day for the two of them. It symbolizes

a day unique to their relationship and they look forward to it each year.

Two days after St. Patrick’s Day is Patricia Shaffer’s (a writer for The Smithfield Times) favorite March holiday. Shaffer and her family have been celebrating St. Joseph’s day on March 19 for many years. Both of Shaffer’s parents came from Italian families so the day holds major importance for them. Although this day originates as a Catholic feast, and some of her family members no longer follow this religion, St. Joseph’s Day remains a mainstay in her life. It also serves as a day to remember her late father Pasquale (Pat) Pisano who passed away about 15 years ago. One of her favorite parts of this day? The large round cream puff topped with whipped cream and a cherry—the zeppole!

Angela Marandola is fond of the zeppole, too.

Marandola also comes from an Italian-Catholic family so St. Joseph’s Day is her personal favorite.

Over the years, she has maintained a yearly tradition with her father that makes this day very special for the two of them. When she was younger, her father would always bring home zeppoles on March 19 and they would go out to dinner at Posillipo’s Restaurant in North Providence. Once she went off to college, Marandola could no longer spend time with her father on St. Joseph’s Day, so on the first year away, she gave him a call to wish him a happy day. He didn’t pick up the phone, so she left a voicemail. Every time her father started to miss his daughter, he would listen to her voicemail, invoking

The Great Debate: Gravy vs. Sauce

By Jane Fusco Growing up Italian – especially in Johnston, which has the second highest Italian population in the country* - nothing says Sunday morning like that huge pot of red, tomato-ey bliss simmering on the stove. The sight of mom or Nona rolling the meatballs then dropping them into that bubbly mixture only meant that a loaf of crusty Italian bread was nearby and ready to be dipped for tasting.

Ah, the gravy was on. But then there are those who say it is sauce, not gravy.

Anyone who has prepared a traditional Italian meal knows of this dilemma. What we call the emulsion that we pour over pasta (Italians call it macaroni, but that is another discussion entirely) has been the subject of debate for some time, and it is not about to end anytime soon.

So, to get a definitive answer, it was time to consult the experts of that exclusive circle of intellectuals who can discuss anything that matters to everything that doesn’t - the members of GUIJ (Grew Up In Johnston). Yes, this is an actual, group.

Here is what they had to say: “Come to my house and ask for sauce and I will prepare you eggs benedict topped with hollandaise sauce. I was a teenager before I ever heard anyone refer to the gravy as sauce. Gravy was made on most Sundays always with meatballs, sausage and sometimes pork! Never made without meat.” Danny Buonanno, one of the

founding members and the official Godfather of GUIJ. “I was brought up that it was gravy. Brown gravy was brown. And ALWAYS macaroni, it was never pasta.” Ellen D’Abate Ingram.

Backing up a bit, this meal usually began with a huge platter of antipasto full of cured meats, cheeses, olives, roasted peppers, and marinated artichoke hearts, followed by some type of pasta (macaroni), the ever-so-tender meats and a fresh green salad often with vegetables straight from the garden. All of this was followed by dessert - fruit, nuts, and homemade pastries, and brown coffee or black coffee, known today as espresso, often with a shot of Anisette and lemon rind. It was a long Sunday morning waiting for this feast to begin at 2 p.m. That’s right, dinner was at 2 p.m. Is that a problem? Only when you’re so hungry that you wished it would be ready by noon. Meanderings

Things people say… sometimes memorable, always readable

By Dick Martin I love clever sayings. Imagine being the first person to say “The beatings will continue until morale improves.” That wasn’t just clever; that was genius!

Even better yet, you can get it on a shirt nowadays!

Back in a time when people actually had time to sit and think about things, a great many interesting conclusions came about, mostly in the form of one-liners. Usually they were pithy and deep with several layers of meaning or at least several layers of application for the new verbal creation. I find it amazing and impressive that certain words/thoughts come into being and never to out of potential use, no matter how many light years away they were created. Some have known authors, some no authors and some, which are claimed by several different people as the originators.

Recently, I purchased a book entitled: The 2,548 Best Things Anybody Ever Said by Robert Byrne.

It is full of interesting quotes that leave the reader to linger over the intent of the “thing” said as well as the meaning and circumstances in which it was created.

Some are heavy and like a good steak take time to digest. Others make you laugh and still others make you rethink what this world is truly about anyway. Today’s sound bites don’t even come close to matching what used to be referred to as “words to live by” from the past. “Just do it” and “It is what it is” just don’t carry the same weight.

Greek philosopher Terence said in 187 B.C.: “Nothing can be said that has not been said before.” I’m not so sure about that, given the number of clever sayings that exist. There has to be room for more.

Passion and ingenuity help sustain Lincoln business

By Paul Lonardo “I had a passion for sewing my whole life,” says Pat Ryan of Ryco’s Trimming and Creative Sewing Center in Lincoln. “When I was young, I made doll clothes, then my own clothes. I did it because I fell in love with it, and I wanted that passion to be reflected in a store.”

In the early 1980’s, Pat was the Director of Marketing of Talon American , a yarn and thread manufacturing company in Stamford, CT, where her future husband, Don Ryan, was Director of Sales. After the company was bought out by larger corporation, Pat and Don were married. They soon learned that the new company had a policy that prohibited husbands and wives from working together in the same division, and Pat was summarily fired. What might seem like a setback to some, they saw as an opportunity. With one door closed, she opened up another that has remained that way ever since.

“We liked working together,” Pat said of her husband at the time of her unceremonious dismissal, “so we went out and started our own trimming manufacturing business.”

They called their company Ryco, Inc., and for five years through the1980’s they achieved success, starting out in an unheated barn in New Jersey for several months before establishing themselves in a rented facility in Stamford.

When it came time to make a move and continue to thrive in a challenging industry and in an increasingly difficult economic climate, the prevailing wisdom from colleagues and business associates was to pack up and take their business to the south. Pat and Don instead went up Route 95 north and settled Ryco in an old Lonsdale Mills building along the Blackstone River in Lincoln.

They bought the all-but abandoned dye house in May 1989 and put a lot of time and effort into renovating and updating the century old mill to meet their requirements. With 25,000 square feet of workspace, it was a massive undertaking.

“It was a dump,” Pat said. “There were no windows, no walls, collapsed floors. It was disgusting. But I believed in what we were doing. We both did. It was blind determination, or maybe sheer stupidity, but we thought we could make a go of it. We had a lot of automated machinery. Don designed it so instead of

one operator one machine, it was one operator five machines.”

Things were working out well for Pat and Ron Ryan until something came along that jeopardized the future of Ryco.

“What happened was the bankruptcy laws changed,” Pat says, “so when retailers started invoking the bankruptcy laws to reorganize their companies, what this essentially meant was that vendors, especially the small ones, would just not be paid. At this point, there was nothing we could do about collecting on overdue invoices. NAFTA also was an issue. It was easy to compete with China at that time, but not with Mexico. So the world had changed.”

When major retail stores like Zayres and Ames began struggling, eventually filing for bankruptcy

and going out of business, the money they owed to Ryco was substantial enough to cripple and defeat the much smaller lace and trim fabric manufacturer.

This adversity only seemed to galvanize Pat and Don’s determination. Instead of breaking, Ryco bent and adapted, allowing them to stave off their own ruination.

“To offset the loss,” Pat says, “because my background was retailing, we decided to start an outlet store. We just took some of our inventory, put it into boxes, and hung a sign on the door to sell directly to the public.”

The strategy worked, and as manufacturing went down, retail spiked way up. Ryco went on to achieve a whole new level of success, utilizing the front of the building for their retail and the back of the building was the factory.

Having weathered that economic storm in the mid to late 1990’s, Don retired from day to day operations at Ryco, while Pat pressed on. Then, in October 2005, Mother Nature, in the form of a flood, tested Pat’s resolve.

“It was a wall of water that came down,” Pat says when the nearby Blackstone River swelled and overflowed, inundated the mill complex and Ryco. “It happened very fast and just like that we had three feet of water in the building.

It lasted only twenty-four hours. The water came down and left, but everything was destroyed.”

FEMA worked with Ryco but the insurance didn’t come close to covering all the losses. So once more, the world changed for Ryco. That’s when Pat rolled up her sleeves and reinvented her business once again.

“With the help of the people I worked with,” Pat says, “which I have to say, they were wonderful, I remembered how much I loved sewing. And that inspired me.”

Pat understood that sewing is a wonderful hobby that is enjoyed by many people, and that’s why she decided to alter the business model for Ryco.

“There are those who think that women shouldn’t learn to sew because they think it is something to do only if you’re going to make a living at it. But it’s not that way. Sewing is as much a hobby for a woman as is tinkering around in the garage and working on cars is for men.”

With so many places in New England selling seconds, leftovers from the mill production days and closeouts, but no place that looked at it as a first class hobby, Pat saw a new business opportunity.

“Everybody who works here shares the same passion,” Pat says. “It’s amazing how many people just glow with the thrill of making something. And it’s all different things. It could be a quilt, it could be curtains, it could be their individuality, puzzles, or art, whatever their passion. That’s what this is about.”

Since that transition, there have been other threats that Ryco has had to endure, including a smaller flood, which brought in about eight inches of water.

Then, in 2013, a fire broke out in an empty building adjacent to Ryco, just a few yards across an alleyway. That building was completely destroyed, but Ryco was upwind and remained untouched, not by an ember or so much as a whiff of smoke.

“At some point,” Pat says, “I know this will sound crazy to some, but you have to really think about divine intervention because that building was 15 feet away.”

Talk about prevailing come hell or high water.

Through all this, the passion at Ryco has not been dampened. Pat is doing what she loves and is happy to come to work every day. And she is not alone.

“This business really is a function of all the people here,” she says. “They absolutely love what’s happening here. It’s not just me, it’s everyone.”

IMHO Sleep, glorious sleep

By Ron Scopelliti After a night of too much pizza and too much wine that finished with coffee, loud background music, and a dubious-looking chocolate chip cookie at AS220, I found myself unable to sleep at about 2 a.m. That shouldn’t have bothered me, since I didn’t have anything to do until noon the following day. But I’ve been feeling this need to maintain a respectable sleep schedule, which in this case would have to wait for another day.

I’m not as good with sleep deprivation as I used to be. There was a period where my daily dose of sleep was about five hours, and while this wasn’t intentional, I seemed to function okay with it.

These days, if I try that I end up with a desperate need to take an afternoon nap. Seriously desperate.

The sort of desperation that leads to manslaughter charges, and creative legal defenses.

It’s hard for me to stay on a respectable sleep schedule, because ever since I was a kid I had this terrible feeling that if I went to sleep I’d miss something. It started when I was five or six, and insisted on staying up until 9 p.m. so I could see the end of “Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In”. Later, I remember being 13 or 14 and struggling to stay awake until 1 a.m. to catch an “Avengers” episode I hadn’t seen, or to watch Kansas performing on

“The Midnight Special.”

Maybe I never recovered from this. Television is still an integral part of my sleep habits. I’ll often use it to distract myself from stray thoughts that keep me from getting to sleep.

But there are only certain shows I can fall asleep to. “Forensic Files” and “Mysteries at the Museum” are good ones. They’re shows that won’t annoy me too much to fall asleep, but they have a certain monotony to their delivery that helps me drift off to sleep as my interest in a grisly murder or J. Edgar Hoover’s favorite dress begins to wane.

However, just as I’m drifting off, Cox Cable usually blasts me awake with their obnoxious “Food, Glorious Food” commercial. I can’t tell if this commercial is 5 percent louder than others, or if it’s just the ever-grating nature of the song that not only wakes me up, but keeps me up for hours with a smoldering and unrelenting hatred of Broadway and the West End for bringing it into existence. Did I mention that I get kinda irritable when I’m tired?

For a while, I tried to embrace my insomnia.

Mammals are naturally suited to nocturnal pursuits because we can regulate our body temperatures without the help of the sun – that’s what gave us our niche to hunt while the cold-blooded reptiles were asleep. Who am I to go against our mammalian tradition by going to bed early? I thought I should use this extra time to be productive.

But I have trouble with abstract thinking when I have insomnia, so I can’t be particularly productive.

I have to choose relatively simple and mindless tasks like washing dishes or doing laundry, and there’s only so much of that available to a single guy.

During a brief period living in Mattapoisett, I was pretty close to a 24-hour Stop and Shop, so I liked to go grocery shopping after midnight. It was a very peaceful experience. I’d put on the first Modern Lovers CD and drive to the Stop and Shop over a traffic-free Route 6, then wander the aisles free from the shopping-cart-traffic-jams of the day.

I’d get home, and by the time I finished putting my

groceries away, I’d find I was ready to fall asleep.

While there’s now a 24-hour Wal-Mart within easy driving range of Smithfield, I’ve never found the same sort of peace in a Wal-Mart. Even at 1 a.m., there’s always some sort of residual Wal-Mart energy that makes it seem crowded when it’s empty.

Not sleep-inducing at all. But I may have found an alternative.

The last week of January, when I was having sporadic bouts of insomnia, I got a call around 7 p.m. It was the “Windows service center” scam, where a “technician” with a heavy subcontinental accent tries to talk you into giving him remote access to your computer. When I have time to kill, I like to string these guys along and waste their time as much as possible. I’ll ask them how they know that I actually own a PC and not a Mac, or how I can change the port forwarding setting on my router. Oddly, they never seem to know the answer.

This time, I decided to ask the guy for their phone number, so I could turn the tables and make annoying random calls when it was convenient to me. I figured I’d try to sell them a subscription to “The Watchtower,” or offer to split a fortune from a bank in Nigeria, all if they’d just give me their bank account info. Surprisingly, he actually gave me a number to call back. This, I thought, would be my new late-night activity.

But a few hours later I started thinking. If I escalate the situation by calling them, they might respond by calling me more often, and harassing me more vigorously. I could find a phone booth to call from, but I can’t remember the last time I’ve seen one, and it could get seriously expensive if I got to harass these people for as long as I wanted to.

And as I thought about it, a strange sensation came over me. I was getting sleepy. Before I knew it I was out like a light.

So forget warm milk and counting sheep. My new sleep aid is planning my revenge on those who annoy me. Now how can I get back at the late Lionel Bart for writing “Food, Glorious Food”…

March 1st, 1966, was the first day of classes at Smithfield’s brand new high school on Pleasant View Avenue. The long awaited opening of the town’s first high school meant that Smithfield teenagers no longer had to attend high school in other towns, which had been the practice for generations.

Newspaper photographs of the event depicted girls wearing skirts and boys, in some cases, wearing ties, indicating that school dress codes have changed a lot in 50 years.

•

Speaking of the new school, the Creative Writer’s Club, led by faculty advisor Josephene Zuchowski, held its first meeting where the guidelines of the club were established and members were given their first writing assignment. It was announced that the club planned to produce four issues of its Liberty Journal during the following school year.

Another ad offered to take away “old pianos” (all types) and rugs for free.

Yet another filed under “Miscellaneous” stated; “Jane, I used to hate you. Your rugs always looked younger than mine, but that was before I went to Lou’s Greenville Hardware; 584 Putnam Pike, Greenville, and rented a Glamorene Electric Rug Shampooer for only $2 a day.”

Two other school clubs, the Tennis Club, and the Folk Music Club, also held meetings.

“Don’t be caught red handed!” began an advertisement for an electric clothes dryer. “Buy a flameless electric dryer now!” For a mere $134.95, or $2.60 a month, an RCA – Whirlpool electric dryer could be yours. Apparently hook-up was extra, for it also read, “Ask about our $75 wiring allowance.”

Two used-car ads stated a 1957 Chevy station wagon with manual-shift V-8 could be had for $100, and a 1959 Plymouth wagon for $200.

In observance of Catholic Book Week at St. Philip’s School, students were allowed to compete in a design contest for the creation of a “school book plate”. The winner was 7th grader Gary Bradbury.

U.S. Coast Guardsman Arnold P. Cook of Valley View Drive was deployed aboard the cutter Casco, stationed at Ocean Station Echo, 1,500 miles east off the coast of North Carolina. The ship would spend 30 days at that location before being relieved by another.

Private Wayne D. Jardin of Stillwater Road completed 14 weeks of basic training for the U.S. Marine Corps.

The St. Patrick’s Bridge and Fashion Show was held March 17 at Anna McCabe School. CoChairwomen of the event were Mrs. Joseph A. Hickey, Jr., and Mrs. John J. Dolan, Jr.

The Smithfield Public School’s Annual Elementary Spelling Bee for grades four through six was held March 18 at Anna McCabe. The event was moderated by J. Thomas Tobin. Judges included; Mrs. Marilyn M. Briggs, Robert Graham, and Miss Kathleen Connor.

Fred Jaswell, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Jaswell, was wounded in action while serving with the 101st Airborne Division in Vietnam. He was brought to Chelsea Naval Hospital in Chelsea, Mass. for treatment.

Forty-two students participated, and the winner was Jean Langlois, who received a trophy. The runners-up for each grade included John Carraro, (4th grade), Stephen Johnson (5th grade), and Paula Capobianco (6th grade).

Sharyn O’Leary of Austin Avenue was the 1966 winner of the Betty Crocker Home-maker Award.

On a related note, the Greenville Home-makers Club met at the Greenville Baptist Church on March 22 for a program titled “Cooking With Your Hat On”.

Lewis said that, while the children love the program, parents have also praised School’s Out for giving them extra time to accomplish what they need to get done during the day. For Hollie Stillwell, a self-employed veterinarian whose son Cathal is a kindergartener in the program, the extra time allows a great deal of job flexibility.

“I don’t have to work around a kindergarten schedule,” she said. “It helps me out immeasurably.”

Stillwell added that she appreciates that the counselors seem to pay particular attention to the kindergarteners. She added that she also appreciates the fact that Cathal speaks frequently of the older kids, and that it’s always in a positive way. She said without hesitation that her younger son, who is three years old, will also attend the program when he enters kindergarten.

“He’s like a mascot,” she said. “Everyone there already knows him. If we go to pick up Cathal and he’s finishing up a craft, as long as they have enough supplies, they always include him too.”

Although it is Mahar’s goal to please everyone, making each child happy can be quite challenging, she said. To combat complaints, she said she likes to come up with a variety of activities to keep the program’s attendees excited.

“I have fun looking up different crafts and games,” she said. “I just imagine what I’d like to do if I were their age.”

Lewis said that Mahar is especially diligent when it comes to switching up the day-to-day activities in order to keep the children interested.

And while it seems everyone loves getting the opportunity to have their face painted, it is only one of the exciting activities favored by the children.

“My favorite thing is swimming, of course,” said Caroline, who is in the second grade, “because it’s really fun!”

Don, a fourth grader who enjoys the free time they’re given to swim around the YMCA’s pool, echoed that sentiment. Lewis explained that every Monday and Friday, the children get the chance to enjoy “free swim,” during which the pool is open only to them. While the children are in the pool, counselors are in the water and on the deck, as well as two lifeguards on duty.

and swimming for the older kids, though, is Gaga Ball. Gaga Ball, played by the older group, is a game similar to dodge ball, but on a smaller scale. Outside the YMCA is a wooden-framed Gaga pit. Gaga ball participants enter this pit and a ball is tossed in. Similar to dodge ball, the objective of this game is to avoid being hit by the ball. If you get hit, you’re out.

“It’s better than dodge ball,” claimed fourth-grader Matthew, “because in dodge ball, the area is just too big.”

The smaller area makes Gaga Ball much more fast-paced dodge ball, he explained.

Lewis said attendees benefit from the program by having the opportunity to meet children from other elementary schools before attending middle and high school together. Kaylee and Gabi, for example, are second graders who attend different elementary schools, but became friends through the program.

During Fun Friday, however, there is no homework time, Mahar said, allowing more time to set up extravagant activities.

“The first day when she came I met her,” Kaylee said, with a smile. She and Gabi had their faces painted by counselor Jacqueline Ferrara: Gabbi’s with a bunch of flowers, and Kaylee’s to match her preference in animals.

“Butterflies are my favorite animal,” she said.

According to Mahar, parents will often pick their children up from the YMCA later than they need to, because the children enjoy being there so much.

“Some parents will specifically leave kids longer because the kids will yell at them if they’re early.”

The face painting festivities during this particular Fun Friday were certainly no exception to this tendency. One-by-one as parents arrived to pick up their children, they were met with requests to wait outside until they had had their turns getting a face painting.

“I recently got an email from a kid’s grandmother thanking me for making this a fun place where kids want to be,” Mahar said. “Having all these fun options really keeps the kids motivated, active and excited to be here.”

Fear and loathing on campaign trail is dark path for America

By Bob Houghtaling Fear sells. Politicians to get votes also use it. While using fear, as part of a strategy is certainly not new, it is important for us all to step back and examine that which frightens us. Today’s political climate is proving to be extremely contentious. Party politics are being played to the extreme and the need for finding ‘bad guys’, to point fingers at, sates a craving for blame.

All of this takes little leadership. All of this is destructive. Unfortunately, all of this gains traction because the general population’s fears have made us susceptible to jingoism and gross exaggeration. The present Republican and Democratic debates clearly illustrate this contention.

For certain, there are some concerns that warrant great attention. The constant turmoil in the Middle East, the economy, health care, prison reform, North Korea, civil rights, environmental challenges and cost effective energy are near the top of many people’s lists.

Politicians often resort to party lines when it comes to tackling these concerns. When this occurs we get slogans, vitriol, blame and eventually polarization. In addition, we see politicians targeting populations, excoriating other leaders and telling the general public that disaster looms if they choose the wrong leader. Really?

Somehow, America has survived having the White House set aflame, a Civil War, political scandals, the Great Depression, two World Wars, September 11, 2001, allowing blacks and women to vote (heaven forbid) and Aaron Burr shooting Alexander Hamilton dead. leads then? Posturing, blaming and overgeneralization make for easy targets, but weak solutions. Unchecked that which sounds great can give us Huey Long.

Each generation of Americans will be confronted with the trials of their times. How we choose those who will guide us through these times reflects upon our character. Do we integrate or dis-integrate? Do we shed a light of hope, or cling to the darker side of our fears? Fear has led to us bracing for the worst. Perhaps now it is time to embrace others out of a renewed sense of goodness.

Great leaders, while acknowledging their foibles, offer possibility. They respect the past, but beseech us to move forward, even in the most trying times. I can hear them say, ‘I have a dream, that we the people, with malice towards none, have nothing to fear except fear itself, for the buck stops here.’ Let us make sure we know where our leaders are leading us.

the messages some leaders throw our way. We should also consider how past crises were handled. Each era has its concerns. Choosing who will help guide us through them is one of our greatest responsibilities.

During their times in office, Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, Franklin Roosevelt, Harry Truman and Ronald Reagan were heavily criticized. Washington was criticized when asking for too much Federal control. Jefferson’s career was marred by his relationship with Sally Hemings. Lincoln battled through the Civil War and suspended the writ of habeas corpus. FDR attempted to pack the Supreme Court to change the balance of opinion on the Court. Truman gave the OK to drop the atomic bombs and later fired General Douglas MacArthur. Finally, Ronald Reagan had the Iran-Contra scandal that gave us Oliver North obfuscating the truth. Many consider these guys among our best Presidents.

Other leaders like Ulysses S. Grant, Grover Cleveland, Warren Harding, Richard Nixon and Bill Clinton have given us outrageous scandals. When today’s candidates say we are living in the worst of times, the other party is trying to destroy America and that Barack Obama is the worst President ever, they are minimizing some salient historical happenings. Look up Millard Fillmore and James Buchanan sometime. There have also been senators and representatives who have done some ridiculous things in the past, as well. One of the most disturbing is Charles Sumner being clobbered by Preston Brooks with a cane on the floor of the Senate.

We might be frustrated by the challenges presented today, but populism, nationalism and jingoism need to be tempered by rationale. People might be clamoring for change, but hope can turn to despair quickly. Who

Dance with your heart and your feet will follow

By Paul Lonardo That’s the motto of John and Dee Soares, former competitive dancers and now husband and wife team, who own and operate Studio One RI in Lincoln. The facility, which boasts one of the largest dance floors in the state, specializes in providing instruction for a wide variety of dancing styles with the goal of making learning to dance easy and fun. Offering lessons in social dancing, wedding preparation, private and group lessons, youth and adult programs, jazz, tap, ballet and dance fitness classes, Studio One RI has a little bit of everything.

It was six years ago that the couple made their dream come true by opening up their own dance studio in a Saylesville factory complex.

“We found a beautiful facility with great floors and lots of windows.” Dee says. “We instantly fell in love with the place at first sight and have been slowly growing the business ever since.”

Dee’s background as a competitive dancer sometimes has her thinking about getting back into it competitively, and even though she and her husband are devoted to what they do for their students at Studio One RI, they remain very active and continue to dance, mostly through the United Country Western Dance Council (UCWDC), an international organization which promotes country western dance by producing festivals and competitions all around the world.

Dee’s love for dance aside, she says her passion is helping her community. She coaches a special needs dance team and is President of the Rhode Island Ballroom Associates. One of more the interesting productions that she is involved with through Studio One RI is a fundraiser called Dancing with the Doctors.

This annual charity event offers a unique evening of entertainment and features some of Rhode Island’s most notable doctors, paired with professional dance instructors, competing in a dance-off to win the muchcoveted “Mirror Ball Trophy” while at the same time raising money for a local charity.

The 2016 Dancing with the Doctors event will be held at Twin Rivers Event Center in Lincoln on April 16, with the proceeds benefiting Home and Hospice Care of Rhode Island.

“We sponsored this event for a couple of years,” Dee says. “It was a lot of fun, but it is difficult to organize children to dance; a lot harder than it is for adults. What happened was, with the success of the hugely popular ABC show, Dancing with the Stars, one day I told my husband that I wanted to do something like that, and he was right on board with it.”

Dee began brainstorming and her efforts eventually lead to Dancing with the Doctors, an event, which was influenced in no small part by the friendships she had with a number of local doctors who danced. When she passed the idea by them, they all thought it would be a lot of fun and committed to participating. One thing that was missing was a charitable organization to donate the proceeds. With many worthy charities go choose from, the only thing that Dee wanted to ensure was that the money be donated locally.

“That’s when I called a friend of mine who worked for CAT Country Radio,” Dee says. “I bounced a few ideas I had off her, and she told me about Amanda Leonardo, the morning DJ at the station, who was being nominated for Rhode Island Woman of the Year by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Having a father-in-law who had been diagnosed with lymphoma, I thought that would be a perfect fit. So the very first Dancing with the Doctors charity event began as a way to support Amanda in her endeavor to become Woman of the Year.”

The event was a success for everyone involved, including Amanda, who ended up winning the honor of Woman of the Year. The following year, Dr. Anthony Deluise, who participated in the first Dancing with the Doctors and won one of the divisions, was nominated to be Man of the Year by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Once again, Dee threw herself behind Dr. Deluise and held a second event, calling upon Rhode Island physicians to participate while securing sponsors to produce a second Dancing with the Doctors event in 2015. It was even more successful, raising $50,000.

Dee is quick to point out that Dr. Deluise was elected Man of the Year.

Care of Rhode Island, an organization that is headed by Dr. Edward Martin, an internist and geriatric medicine specialist, with whom Dee has been acquainted with for several years.

“I wanted to do this for Home and Hospice Care,” Dee explains, “because they were there for me and my family when we were losing a loved one. They gave us guidance and support, making a difficult time a little easier, so we wanted to turn around and support them.

They do a lot of good things for a lot of people.”

Dee plans to continue producing an annual Dancing with the Doctors event and donating the proceeds to a different charity each year. She already has a charitable organization in mind for 2017, one that is also near and dear to her, but she will not announce the name of that charity until after this year’s event.

“I think it’s important to support local charities,” Dee says. “I pick with my heart. So Home and Hospice Care will be the benefactor of everyone’s hard work this year.”

Eighteen doctors have signed on to make the 2016 event a success. While it is great fun for a great cause, it is also a big commitment and a lot of work. The doctors can’t just get out on the dance floor and wing it.

Much preparation is involved, practicing and rehearsing and getting in shape. For about two months prior to the event, the doctors work closely with their dance partners and instructors at Studio One RI to prepare for the show.

Typically, doctors do not have a lot of down time, so Dee and the other instructors know that they have to be flexible, making themselves available virtually 24-hours a day. Sometimes they are at the studio rehearsing at 6 in the morning and other times 11 at night.

“We work our schedules around whatever will meet the doctors’ best needs,” Dee says. “We understand that they have stressful jobs and that they are in high demand, so we try to make the practice sessions as pleasant and convenient as we can possibly make it.”

Dee begins by working with each dancer individually to determine what kind of dance will best work for their skill level and experience, as well as their personality.

“Individual body type, size, and shape all come into play and make a difference,” Dee says. “Some doctors will arrive and say, ‘I want to dance to this song’ or ‘I want to do that dance.’ They usually know exactly what they want. So now it becomes our job to find the choreography to fit and make them all look good on the dance floor.”

While the individual dances are the doctors’ choosing, a majority of the performances are ballroom style, though all forms are available and selections can vary widely, from hip-hop and salsa to swing and the cha cha to the foxtrot and the waltz, tango and rumba, even soft shoe. In the past, there have been some unique dance concepts performed, including Batman’s bat dance, a Bonnie and Clyde routine, and Michael Jackson’s Thriller.

“We help them pick what’s going to work for them and what’s going to work for the audience, because it is, after all, a show,” Dee says. “A lot of times, we pick themes. For doctors who may not have a lot of dance experience, they usually like having a theme, because it’s easier to take on a persona and become that person, rather than having to go out there and try to do a cha-cha as yourself. So you can go out there and pretend you’re Ricky Ricardo and you’re dancing with Lucy, and you’re having the time of your life.”

The event is not only fun for the doctors, it is also very rewarding for them. Dr. Lou Rice, a specialist in infectious disease, who participated in last year’s event, told Dee that the dancing and preparation required to compete in Dancing with the Doctors is a therapeutic and peaceful time.

So, next time, as you’re sitting in a crowded waiting room outside your doctor’s office, it might make you feel better to know that your doctor might just be rehearsing his or her dance moves in preparation for this year’s event. Or better still, buy a ticket for the April 16 event and experience Dancing with the Doctors yourself.

Payne’s Picks

by Sarah Payne Upcoming Netflix releases Flaked March 11th - Since March is turning out to be a very slow month at the movie theater, I thought I’d give a quick sneak peak at this eight-episode comedy series coming to Netflix.

It’s set in Venice, California and stars Will Arnett as a self-help guru. Netflix posted a trailer for Flaked on YouTube, but not much else has been released about the show. Arnett and Arrested Development creator Mitch Hurwitz developed the show, so there is hope that it will have a similarly dry sense of humor.

Redbox reviews Steve Jobs I am not a Steve Jobs fan. Sure, he was an incredibly successful business man.

But I do not understand people who put him on a pedestal as a creative genius. Perhaps that’s why I liked this film so much, which was directed by Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire) and written by Aaron Sorkin (The So-

cial Network). It stars two wonderful actors—Michael Fassbender as Jobs and Kate Winslet as Apple marketing executive Joanna Hoffman—and features Jobs as he prepares for three different product releases over the course of this life. It’s through these product releases that we see Jobs’ general disdain and ingratitude for those around him. Fassbender’s portrayal of Jobs is impeccable and borderline robotic.

And the film highlights everything that made Jobs such a flawed man—that he took other people’s ideas without giving them credit and refused to acknowledge his daughter for most of her young life. I can even see some parallels between Steve Jobs and The Social Network, in that both films are about men with brilliant ideas who each lose sight of what matters.

Movie reviews The Revenant This is by far my favorite film of the year—with beautiful cinematography (you’ll want to move to Calgary,

Canada after watching it) and a gutwrenching performance by Leonardo DiCaprio (it’s good to see him back center stage). Even at 2 hours, 36 minutes, you never find yourself checking your watch. You may find yourself cold and thirsty after seeing what Leo’s character goes through when he’s left to die in the woods, though. Some of the most memorable scenes in The Revenant are in fact solo performances by Leo, like when he’s viciously attacked by a bear or when he maneuvers himself into the carcass of a dead horse so as not to freeze to death. So if you like wilderness revenge stories, and the idea of Leo and Tom Hardy battling it out, then The Revenant is definitely for you.

Music review Anti by Rihanna I’ve been a Rihanna fan for nearly 10 years now—since the early “Umbrella” days. She may not be one of the most authentic musicians out there, but she sure does churn out hits. And she’s an incredibly hard worker, making seven

albums in seven years. But then she made fans wait nearly three years for Anti. She even released a couple songs last year that didn’t end up on the album, like “FourFiveSeconds.” Just when it seemed like the album would never be released, it was suddenly offered for free on Tidal and then on Spotify a week later. It was worth the wait, but it’s decidedly different from her other albums. It’s subtle and subdued. Josh Duboff from Vanity Fair describes it as, “a Sunday-afternoon album, not a Friday-night one. It would be perfect to listen to in the rain.” Six of the sixteen songs aren’t even three minutes long, which is frustrating. Did Rihanna leave them unfinished because she’s starting a tour next month?

Perhaps we’ll never know. My favorite song is “Kiss It Better.” I’m fascinated with “Same Ol’ Mistakes,” which is a cover of song by the trippy alternative rock band Tame Impala. Is anyone else surprised Rihanna knows Tame Impala? The girl just keeps surprising us.

By Patricia McIvor Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice will premiere this month, so let’s look at the history of Batman on the silver screen. Throughout his various cinematic iterations, Batman’s origin story has remained more or less the same. After his parents are murdered in a backalley mugging, millionaire Bruce Wayne takes it upon himself to fight crime in Gotham City. He studies martial arts, develops specialized gadgets, and adopts the persona of Batman in order to instill fear in Gotham’s very active criminal underground.

Both the movie and the series take their cues from the original comics, right down to the eyebrows drawn on Batman’s mask, so West sets himself apart from his cartoonish costars by keeping Batman calm, cool, and collected. Indomitable Karlene Hogan keeps activities rolling at The Chalet

By Harry Anderson Karlene, I know how reluctant you are about letting me interview you. But look at it this way. What you do for the residents at The Chalet is extraordinary, truly! Your story should be told. It will inspire a lot of people. Deadline’s approaching, so suppose I come to your office tomorrow morning at 10 and we’ll talk for an hour?

That was my email message to Karlene Hogan, the activities director at The Chalet – the independent living unit of The Village at Waterman.

OK That was her reply, sent at 6:58 a.m. Typically, she had begun another workweek before a winter sun arose – punching out a laconic response to a request that had her grimacing.

driving a school bus, I didn’t like kids anymore. So, I knew I either had to like old people or animals.”

Karlene discovered that management was not crazy, that she has all the right stuff to become a very good activities director. The rough and tough times she had passed through – sparring with teachers, single handedly raising two boisterous sons, chauffeuring a gaggle of unruly kids to and from school, dealing cards to hard-core gamblers in the wee hours - were molding her character. And all the while – unperceptively – at home at the kitchen table she had been forging her foundation.

Not only were the zillions of hi-lo-jack games played with her father giving her enjoyment but also they were passing on to her his ethics: stay on your toes, play your cards with confidence, accept the fact that you will not always win, and be a good sport. Before his death four years ago, by example he had also instilled in his daughter such traits as not being pretentious or shying away from hard work Perhaps I should make known that the morning of our interview was not the first time I met Karlene. Hardly. I have gone on excursions with her – to Concord and Walden Pond, for example - when I witnessed her in action. Like a Border collie guarding its flock, she kept watch of the residents as they picked their way along unpaved paths. With a voice like a drill sergeant, she shouted orders: “Norman, keep moving! You don’t wanna get left behind, do you, buddy?”

I have hitched rides on the van to Rhode Island Philharmonic concerts, awed by her devil-may-care navigating through Smith Street traffic. On one such Saturday night, when a resident tripped and fell on the van’s steps, she kept her cool and managed the crisis with the skill of an EMT. I have seen her lead a line of residents into St. Philip Church for a Sunday Mass or into Chepachet’s Baptist Church for a Sunday afternoon’s Music at the Meetinghouse program. I have ducked beneath her voice when she trooped into The Chalet’s library during a book discussion, bellowing: “I’m collecting your books today and I don’t want no one to forget! Do you hear me?”

And I have seen her pretend to be buttoning her coat as she wept at graveside of Ginny, a long-time resident of The Chalet.

As soon as a newcomer checks in, Karlene has a one-on-one talk with him/ her. “I’m Irish,” she smiles. “I’m very nosy.” Her aim, though, is to ferret out the person’s likes and dislikes, because, as she explains, “I don’t stereotype. These aren’t just ‘old people’. Everyone is unique and has her own story to tell. It’s just the way I am. I want to please!”

A thunk at the doorway to her office brought her to her feet. “Jake, when are you going to learn to drive that walker?”

Jake had returned to persuade Karlene to make the run to the bank and pharmacy that afternoon, saying he just heard that tomorrow snow is forecast.

“Good try, Buddy. But tomorrow it is! You still don’t get it, do you? I’m not intimidated by nothing!”

The old man looked up at the visitor and said, “Whew . . . this lady’s no softy.”

She shot back, “This lady’s gotta run. There are lots to do. See you gents later.”

I stood by my car in the front parking lot and took in the view down below.

A brisk wind churned the water of Waterman Lake, and I recalled watching Karlene’s hustling hot dogs among the residents last Fourth of July as they sat scattered on The Chalet’s lawn to await the evening’s fireworks show over the lake. All’s well up here on the hill, I thought. How could it be otherwise, what with Karlene Hogan’s determination to vanquish the demons of the aged, all the while boasting, “I’m not intimidated by nothing!”

The Nature Conservancy will also establish a similar endowment in Aust’s memory.

“It’s the kind of gift that just keeps giving year after year, and helps sustain the long-term effectiveness of the Nature Conservancy in Rhode Island,” says Terry Sullivan, director of the Nature Conservancy’s Rhode Island chapter.

Sullivan was equally surprised by the gift from Aust.

“She was a longtime donor, just at our membership level,” he says. “She was not someone we would call a major donor.”

He notes that many of the group’s 5,000 members in Rhode Island gift $25 to $50 dollars a month to the Conservancy. He counts Aust among that group.

The organization plans to recognize similarly loyal donors as The Aust Society in her memory.

Headquartered on the East Side of Providence, the chapter owns about 10,000 acres of land according to Sullivan, including 70 acres of trails.

vancy’s land is in South County and Sakonnet, or on Block Island, the Lime Rock Preserve in Lincoln is a nearby exception. The 130-acre preserve, created in 1986 features 2.75 miles of hiking trails and is home to 30 rare plant species, according to the Conservancy’s website. Sullivan notes that it also contains traces of a manmade feature – a trolley line that once ran through the property.

In addition to protecting land and fresh water and encouraging people to connect with nature, the Conservancy is involved in coastal and ocean conservation. Sullivan says that part of Aust’s bequest will be used to expand their coastal restoration program and launch new initiatives in the Providence area. In particular, they’re looking to reduce the amount of harmful storm-water runoff flowing into Narragansett Bay and the Providence River by using green infrastructure techniques like rain gardens, holding ponds, and increased green space.

“It’s at the beginning stages,” he says of the initiative, “but some other cities like Washington D.C. are doing this with some effect.”

Although Carolyn Aust was a member of The Nature Conservancy for 20 years, Sullivan says he never had the opportunity to meet her, and knows little about her.

“I never met her; I wish I had,” he says, noting that he learned a little about her, but that she was “a private person, obviously.”

Stargazing

Prime Time for Observing Jupiter

By David Huestis, Historian, Skyscrapers, Inc. It’s been a few months since any of the naked-eye planets have been visible during convenient evening hours for casual stargazers. From mid-November into early 2016, amateur astronomers who wished to view Venus, Saturn, Mars, Jupiter, and a brief and low appearance of Mercury, had to do so during the early morning hours before sunrise. For those of you whose work and family commitments prevented such exploration, the drought of planets in the evening sky is about to end.

The first planet to be well-placed for scrutiny will be the largest world in the solar system—Jupiter. On March 1 this massive planet (you could fit 1,321 Earths within its volume) will rise above the eastern horizon around 6 p.m. I suggest waiting an hour or so for Jupiter to ascend higher before you begin to observe it with a telescope. Since Jupiter will be the brightest object in this area of the sky, you shouldn’t have any difficulty in finding it.

However, what may first catch your eye before Jupiter increases in altitude will be the blue white star Regulus, the constellation Leo’s brightest star. In sky lore Regulus marks the position of the lion’s heart.

It also marks the terminus of a star pattern or asterism known as the sickle, seen as a backwards question mark. The sickle represents the head, mane and shoulders of the lion. Jupiter will be located down and to the left of Regulus, under the lion’s hindquarters.

tion (opposite the Sun in the sky) and at its closest distance to the Earth this year at approximately 412,296,186 miles. Jupiter will be visible all night.

And in fact, we’ll be able to observe Jupiter through mid-August, when it will be low in the west at sunset, requiring a very good western horizon to view.

That leaves us five good months to watch the everchanging Jovian system.

Telescopic observations of Jupiter began on January 7, 1610, by Galileo Galilei using a lens 1.5 inches in diameter with a magnification of only 20X. He immediately noticed three little stars in the planet’s vicinity. At first he thought they were background stars, but after careful observation he deduced they were orbiting Jupiter. You can read about Galileo’s discovery in his own words in a brief work titled, “Sidereus Nuncius”, or “The Starry Messenger”, published on March 13, 1610. His observations of Jupiter’s satellites begins on page 17 of this document: http://homepages.wmich.edu/~mcgrew/Siderius.pdf Galileo’s telescopic work and the calculations that followed proved the Copernican theory’s Sun-centered orbital dynamics of the solar system, still controversial for the time. The planets orbited the Sun, just as Jupiter’s moons orbited about him. Galileo concluded in “The Starry Messenger”, “…for now we have not one planet only revolving about another, while both traverse a vast orb about the Sun, but our sense of sight presents to us four stars circling about Jupiter, like the Moon about the Earth, while

all of them together with Jupiter traverse a great orb moving around the Sun in the space of twelve years.”

You can relive Galileo’s discovery of Jupiter’s moons, now known as the Galilean satellites, using even a small, off the shelf refractor. Also easily observed will be Jupiter’s bands and zones, which give the planet a striped appearance. Larger instruments may also reveal the Great Red spot, a centuries old storm in Jupiter’s cloud tops. Use whatever optical aid you have at hand, but if you wish to marvel at the beauty of Jupiter and all it has to offer, then set aside some time to visit one of the local observatories for a splendid visual experience.

Here’s what one could expect to see over a period of a few nights. Just like Galileo, one of the first things that will catch your eye will be the Galilean moons. They are: Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto. When several of the Galilean moons are visible at the same time, they often appear in a straight line, parading around Jupiter in the plane of its equator.

This astrophysical arrangement presents many interesting phenomena for us earth-bound astronomers to observe. (For those of you who love facts, Jupiter has 63 known moons total, the majority of which cannot be seen visually with even large amateur telescopes in a dark sky.)

When a moon passes in front of Jupiter and casts a shadow onto the Jovian cloud tops, it is called a shadow transit. Besides seeing the satellite’s shadow, you may also see the bright disk of the satellite traversing Jupiter’s clouds at the same time, though

this event is more difficult to observe.

A moon may also pass behind the planet, which is called an occultation.

Jupiter’s shadow can even eclipse a satellite as well; gradually the moon will either blink out or reappear. Also, it’s fun to watch all four moons line up on one side of the planet. I love to watch Jupiter over an extended period of time during the course of one evening because the view is dynamically changing as you watch.

While you can be pleasantly surprised at the eyepiece of a telescope by any of these satellite events during a random observing session, you can use the following website to plan ahead to ensure you experience a special Galilean satellite event (http://www.skyandtelescope. com/wp-content/observing-tools/jupiter_moons/jupiter.html#).

Next it’s time to look at Jupiter’s disk, the ball of the planet. Jupiter is a large planet so even a small telescope will show a keen-eyed observer much detail. The more prominent dark bands/belts and lighter zones in Jupiter’s cloud tops can easily be seen. Though the Great Red Spot (GRS), an almost 400-year-old storm, is not as red (some observers describe it as salmon colored) as it once was many years ago, it should be fairly easy to see if it has rotated into view.

However, since its discovery the GRS has shrunk by 50 percent, and in more recent years its oval shape has become more circular. Some astronomers speculate that the storm may be dissipating. Only time will tell. A six-inch telescope or larger may be needed to catch a glimpse of it. Keep in mind that Jupiter rotates once in 10 hours, making it possible to see the entire planet in one or two nights of observing. Once Jupiter rises high enough to be viewed from the local observatories, it will be the focus of attention for several months. Only the Moon will be able to draw attention away from Jupiter. That is until the beginning of June when Mars, then Saturn, will return to the early evening sky for us to view. By Jove, get out there and enjoy one of the great visual pleasures that a telescope can provide.

Snow or ice can force closures, so please check the respective websites for any cancellation notices before venturing out for a visit. Obituaries Mildred “Millie” Teresa Johnson, 86, died Friday, February 19, 2016. She was the widow of Carl Victor Johnson, who died in 1980, and the longtime companion of Jack McElroy, with whom she shared her life for twenty years.

Born in Providence, she was a daughter of Fred and Mae (Cavanaugh) San Souci. Mildred worked as a waitress at J and D as well as the Smithfield Elks. She was a member of the Smithfield Emblem club, and loved dancing at the Elks. She is survived by her sons, Kenneth J. Johnson, of Burrillville, Carl M. Johnson, of Johnston, Eric P. Johnson of Georgia, and David V. Johnson of Johnston, her eight beloved grandchildren and her eight cherished great-grandchildren. She is predeceased by her sister Doris Franklin and Mary Taylor. An avid reader, she enjoyed supporting and spending time at the Greenville Public Library. She loved music, laughter, and all the beauty in life. A loving mother and friend to many, she will be remembered for her smile, keen intelligence, and caring nature. She is survived by her children, Vickie A. Guertin of Northwood, N.D., Stephanie K. Dutra of Lincoln, Angelynn J. Grant of Cambridge, Mass., and Peter W. Grant of Collingswood, N.J.; 7 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

We’re getting down to the last few months of waiting… Nearly every college will respond to a student by April 1, 2016 with their offer of admission, denial, waitlist and a financial aid award.

But will the financial aid award letter be the final offer? Not necessarily. (For more explanation, check out this great video on the ¹ Insider’s Guide to Financial Aid - even though it’s a few years old, the process is the same for applicants for the Fall of 2016.)

Now that your financial aid forms have been submitted, or soon will be, the next step is for you to have your federal tax return ready as soon as possible. Some colleges will require you to submit a signed copy of your return as early as March 1.

This DOES NOT mean that you have filed your taxes prior to the tax deadline of April 15th - you just have signed copies ready to go.

Schools will request your returns because your student’s name: • Was selected at random by the Federal Government for a process known as Verification.

• Applied to a college that requires you to mail or fax signed copies of your tax returns directly to the college.

• Applied to a college that uses the Institutional Documentation Service or ² IDOC to securely transmit them.

• Applied to a college that verifies tax information directly through the FAFSA ³ IRS Data Retrieval Tool* (DRT), or will ask for your Tax Transcript.

Not meeting a college’s tax return requirements may not necessarily reduce or rescind a financial aid award. But most financial aid awards will continue to be “provisional” until your taxes have been received by the colleges. If you can’t or don’t meet the college’s tax return deadlines, please have them completed as soon as possible.

For example, MIT asks parents to submit a hard copy of their 2014 tax return now, if they won’t have their 2015 taxes done for IDOC by February 15, 2016.

If your student did not file taxes for 2015 (or is not required to), and a college still wants the student tax form, you may have to file the “non-tax filer IDOC form” to complete the financial aid requirements for the school. Make sure you look up and obtain that form, if necessary.

Stay on top of your emails and have your student applicant (aka: high school Senior) keep an eye on their email - on a daily basis! Don’t miss replying to important forms, on time! Or you’ll find yourself out of time... and out of money for college!
