Dr. Hull, Jackson’s doctor at the time, gently conveyed the results and where Jackson fell on the autism spectrum. It was a moment filled with mixed emotions, as Megan grappled with accepting this new reality. Dr. Hull posed a poignant question that lingered in her mind: “Would Jackson come to get her if he saw a firetruck outside the front door?” At that time, her answer was a hesitant “no.” However, as time passed, Jackson’s growth and progress defied expectations, reminding us that every child’s journey unfolds at its own pace. It was not an easy journey, but Megan’s unwavering support and Jackson’s remarkable resilience led to extraordinary breakthroughs. 24

In the midst of Jackson’s extraordinary journey, his mother, Megan Belden, imparts words of wisdom to other special needs parents. She encourages them to let go of conventional milestones and timelines, emphasizing that each child’s progress unfolds in a unique way and time. It’s a reminder that, with unwavering love and support, every child can blossom into their fullest potential. Megan’s journey with Jackson has been filled with both challenges and triumphs. She emphasizes that letting go of societal expectations and allowing children to be themselves is essential for their growth and happiness. In her words, “Try to let go of all the milestones and the ages these should be hit. Everything will come in time, it just might not be the typical timeline of most children, and that’s okay.” Megan’s unwavering support and belief in her son have been pivotal in his journey. She has learned to celebrate every achievement, no matter how small, and to focus on Jackson’s unique strengths and abilities. Megan’s advice to parents of special needs children is a reminder that love, patience, and acceptance are the keys to helping children like Jackson reach their full potential and lead fulfilling lives. 26

Wishes Can Truly Happen! LET US REINTRODUCE YOU TO AARON WILLIAMS ARTICLE BY MIKE STURDIVANT WITH PICTURES SUBMITTED BY TRACY BREWER

Y

ou may remember a remarkable young man named Aaron Williams from a feature we did on him in October of 2022! Recently we met back up with Aaron and his mom Lisa to update you on some incredible things Aaron has been up to. In 2021, Aaron embarked on a heartwarming journey to make a difference in the lives of children facing critical illnesses. Armed with a unique fundraising idea, Aaron’s determination and compassion have left an indelible mark on his community.

30

November 2023

Aaron’s journey began in 2021 when he decided to support the organization “Wishes Can Happen” through an unconventional method: selling coleslaw. Yes, coleslaw! With a dash of creativity and a whole lot of dedication, Aaron ventured into the world of culinary entrepreneurship to raise funds for this noble cause. The delicious coleslaw he prepared quickly gained popularity in his local community, and he managed to collect a significant sum. However, Aaron’s philanthropic efforts didn’t stop there. In 2023,

he took his fundraising game to a whole new level by launching a line of homemade dog treats. These treats were not just any ordinary canine snacks; they were 100% preservativefree, reflecting Aaron’s commitment to providing the best for our fourlegged friends. The decision to make dog treats was strategic, as Aaron recognized the growing trend of pet owners seeking healthier, natural options for their furry companions. The combination of his culinary skills and dedication

to quality ensured that the dog treats became a hit among pet lovers. The pinnacle of Aaron’s charitable journey came at the “Wishes Can Happen Wish-A-Thon” fundraiser this year. Aaron, with his generous heart and unwavering dedication, donated a staggering $4,795 from the proceeds of his homemade dog treats. This substantial contribution served as a testament to the impact one person can make when they commit to a cause they truly believe in. What makes Aaron’s contribution even more extraordinary is the fact that it didn’t stop at the initial donation. His mother, Lisa, works for AultCare, an employer with a strong commitment to community involvement. AultCare matched Aaron’s donation dollar for dollar, effectively doubling the impact of his efforts. In total Aaron raised enough during his campaign to fulfill a full wish for a deserving child! This heartwarming example of corporate philanthropy highlights the power of community collaboration and the ripple effect of one young individual’s determination. Aaron’s journey is a shining example of how a single person, regardless of age, can make a profound difference in their community. His commitment to raising funds for

“Wishes Can Happen” showcases the potential within all of us to contribute to a better world. Moreover, his creativity in choosing coleslaw and later preservative-free dog treats as fundraising tools illustrates the importance of thinking outside the box when it comes to philanthropy. The impact of Aaron’s efforts extends beyond the impressive monetary contribution. His story serves as an inspiration to others, demonstrating that even the most unconventional ideas can lead to positive change. Aaron’s dedication reminds us that kindness knows no bounds and that a compassionate heart can touch countless lives. In conclusion, Aaron Williams is not just a young philanthropist; he is a beacon of hope and inspiration. His journey from selling coleslaw to crafting preservative-free dog treats, and ultimately making a substantial donation to “Wishes Can Happen,” underscores the immense potential for positive change that resides within each of us. Aaron’s story reminds us that with passion, creativity, and a generous spirit, we can all make the world a better place. PROFESSIONAL PERSPECTIVE > AMANDA ANSCHUTZ

GRIEF CLUB NOT FIGHT CLUB BY AMANDA ANSCHUTZ

I

did something out of my comfort zone, and I have no regrets. My hope is that after you’ve heard my story that you will feel empowered to do the same. Grief is tough, it doesn’t matter what part of this journey you are on, it’s just tough. Sometimes the misconception is that it’s like a light switch that you can turn off and on when you feel like it, well let me tell you that light switch is broken, and it will just be part of your life. But the good news is that you are not alone on this journey. Everyone and I mean EVERYONE will have

36

November 2023

grief. It could be the death of a loved one, a divorce, a broken friendship, a job loss, financial struggles… the list goes on. Thankfully there are a lot of people in this world who make it their life mission to help you navigate this club that no one wants to be in, but everyone will be. A few months ago, the church where we make our meals out of shared that they would be holding a Grief Share group, and if we would be interested in checking it out, we would be welcome. My husband and I figured it might not be a bad idea for us to check

out the group so we could recommend it to those in our organization who might need it. I never imagined that I personally would need it, because let’s be real, I was handling the grief in my life with no problem. (NOT!) So, we signed up and went about our business till last week when I realized that the group’s first meeting would be this coming Sunday. I started to tell myself that I was just going to go and observe but I wouldn’t need to share…. That is what I was telling myself. And sure, enough the week before was filled with all the emotions and struggles that so many

people find themselves in when they are asking questions “Why did this happen?”, “How do I get out of this funk.”, “I don’t want people to see me broken.” All the questions that we need to stop asking ourselves and saying, I might not be strong right now, but I know that I am going to be OK. The morning came for the Grief Share group to meet, and I woke up having all the feelings and wishing that I could just back out. But my dear husband wasn’t having it and said, let’s go and see what it’s about – it will be OK. The 24-minute drive felt like 6 hours, and

I wanted to cry, be mad, throw up, go back to bed…I was truly fighting what was to come, but knew that I needed this, I had to stop thinking that I was holding it all together because I was only fooling myself. After parking the car, grabbing some gum, and taking a deep breath we walked into the building. A very kindlooking gentleman met us at the door and pointed us down the hallway where we would be meeting. With each step, my legs and feet felt like they had so much weight attached to them but as we approached the room, I started to feel this sense of calm flood over me. The woman who greeted us said she was so glad we were there. As a few more people came into the room we found our seats and took a deep breath because just getting there was half the battle and we made it. The couple who led the group opened with their

own stories and how they have navigated this journey of grief. At one point they said you can share as much or as little as you want, but we encourage you to share. At that point, I could feel the tears welling up in my eyes and I kept telling myself to “stop it.” Isn’t that what so many of us do, push those emotions back because we don’t want to deal with them but trust me when you do it feels amazing. *More on that in a second. The group moved to watch an opening video from those who formed the Grief Share group and others who have gone through it. I no longer can hold all those tears back and I just start to let it all out. I can’t seem to get them to stop but for the first time I felt like it was such a safe space to do this, and no one would look at you and wonder what was wrong with you. After the 20-30 minutes finished it was

time for each of us to share the reason why we were there. Two women went before me and shared such devastating stories and as they got to me, I could hardly get the words out because all the emotions hit me at once. Thankfully my husband shared a little till I could pull myself together and share that for the last six and half years we’ve had the honor to walk with people in our community who have been diagnosed with a lifethreatening or terminal illness or disease. Many of the people we delivered meals to have passed away from their diagnoses. Each loss is harder than the last for us because it truly puts us face-to-face with death. Over the years we have been with friends and family in some of their hardest moments. I’ve internalized all of it for the last decade and on this early Sunday morning it all came running

out and I couldn’t stop it. I didn’t want to stop it… After I shared, I felt this enormous weight off my shoulders, and I could finally breathe because I could verbally say what I’d been feeling for all these years. The woman leading the group looked straight at me and said you have Compassion fatigue and for the first time someone labeled exactly what I haven’t been able to put into words. There is something in the healing of loss when someone can see you and know exactly what you are feeling. No other words needed to be said at that moment and finally, I could rest knowing that I wasn’t alone. Welcome to the club that no one ever wants to join but so many of us end up needing. We’re sorry that you are here. But you won’t be alone on this journey. I can’t wait till we go back next week.

A True 1 In A Million! The Story of Camila Guzman BY ANDREA HURR • PHOTOS BY JULIAN CURET

Having a child with special needs who appears to look like a “typical” child presents another layer of challenges that many may not think about. In 2021, then almost 4-year-old Camila Guzman was diagnosed with a rare and severe form of epilepsy called Lennox Gastaut Syndrome (LGS). According to lgsfoundation. org, approximately 48,000 children and adults in the United States have LGS and approximately only 1 million people worldwide have this condition. No one is born with LGS - it is a syndrome that develops over time so the diagnosis can be quite a shock. There is also currently no cure. Looking in from the outside though, you would never know by just looking at Camila that she has this. That is actually what can be most terrifying for her and her family. Part 40

November 2023

of Camila’s treatment is following a strict ketogenic diet to keep the seizures at a minimum. It can be quite challenging, especially now that Camila is in school but they have seen great success from it so far. Part of the challenge is that because she appears to not have any issues there is always a risk of someone offering her a sugary treat as a reward. Anything out of her approved diet can actually cause havoc on her little body. Although great care is used to notify all staff in Camila’s care, there have been times when someone not so familiar with her case has offered up a non-approved snack or treat and this can cause a hospital stay and weeks of rearranging her medicines to get her back to a more “normal” state. It is also impossible to expect a child to be able to turn down a food/

drink that she cannot have because she’s just that, a child. So even though Camila knows she can’t accept just anything from people, the Guzmans can’t expect her to always follow through on that, especially if a peer is just sharing and trying to be a nice friend. Because of this, mom Alix, says that “it is so appreciated when anyone stops to ask if my child has any allergies, etc. before offering anything to eat! It can be difficult for many to understand how specific her diet is and is often easy for Camila to blend in as a typical kid and her special needs can go unnoticed.” Camila is now a fun-loving 6-yearold attending kindergarten in Green who participates in dance. She and her family have had their share of scares and struggles as they adjust to life with this syndrome. Camila was a typically developing child up to her diagnosis and this catapulted her parents, Alix and Mario, into a world of doctors, hospital visits, invasive tests, medications, and gaining knowledge on treatments and care. Camila requires numerous medications daily along with meds administered by G-Tube and her

ketogenic diet to keep seizure activity under as much control as they can. Alix says they have received exceptional care at Akron Children’s Hospital and they are so grateful, especially to all the doctors and nurses and the neurology department. They also have to monitor her while she is sleeping because a lot of seizure activity can take place at sleepy time and there are risks of falling out of bed, etc. They often come up with some creative ways to share the bed with her to be close in case of this activity. Although all of this is relatively new for them, they have a

tribe on their side, especially some friends who have children with special needs as well, that they can relate to, share with, and have to comfort and inspire each other. “Having a child with a medical condition like Camila’s has at times been very stressful and very scary. We are so grateful to have found successful treatments to control her seizures. With some of our darkest days behind us, we now remember to be grateful for so many small things. Getting through holidays with no trips to the hospital and participating in “normal” activities with Camila that we missed so much of in 2021 are so

special to us now. I remember days of not knowing how I could keep doing this, but always told myself to put one foot in front of the other and keep fighting. We are so thankful for where we are now!” says Alix. It just goes to show you that you never know the battles that someone may be fighting and when it comes to children they are all special and unique no matter how they may appear. Spreading awareness to treat everyone with kindness and always ask a parent or caregiver before offering up any treats is not just in good taste, it can save a life!

Stark County’s first smart home for individuals with developmental disabilities and special needs WRITTEN BY AND PHOTOGRAPHED BY MORIAH SEMENIK

In a landmark moment for the Stark County community, Hope Homes Foundation Incorporated, a non-profit 501(c) (3) organization, has unveiled the region’s first-ever Smart Home designed to support individuals with developmental disabilities and special needs. The project is a result of the organization’s unwavering commitment to affordable housing and support services for those in need, with an

46

impressive six-decade legacy in the field. This project was made possible through collaborations with Charis Homes, the Stark County Board of Developmental Disabilities, and Midwest Health Services. Paul Herrera, Hope Homes Executive Director explains that the organization has been a beacon of hope for individuals with developmental disabilities and special

needs in Stark, Summit, and Wayne counties for over 60 years. Hope Homes has 22 rental properties serving over 101 individuals. Herrera collaborates with the local County Boards of DD and the State of Ohio to purchase and construct new homes. Just until 6 years ago they were also a service provider. Now Hope Homes is a solo housing and property management corporation that offers their homes to individuals and direct care service providers such as the Midwest Health Services for lease. Midwest currently offers residential support through 32 sites across Stark County, serving a diverse group of individuals ranging in age from 18 to 90+ years. The residents receive round-the-clock care, with staff members supporting their unique needs, ensuring their well-being and fulfillment. Hope Homes’ latest venture, the Smart Home initiative, introduces an innovative approach to support services, prioritizing independence and technological integration. The pilot home, built by Charis Homes, has already welcomed Shawn Miller &

its first residents in early July. This trailblazing project serves as a model for the county, demonstrating how state-of-theart technology can enhance the lives of individuals with developmental disabilities.

Juron Martin & Gina Beamer with Midwest Health Services

The Smart Home boasts a myriad of technological advancements to cater to the specific needs of its residents. Some of the key features include: • Remote Support Systems: The Smart Home integrates Angel-sense watches, a personal remote support system, allowing caregivers to stay connected with residents and respond promptly to their needs • Smart Kitchen: The induction stovetop with no-burn pots and pans enhances safety, while the refrigerator aids individuals in following recipes step-by-step and even adding groceries to their Instacart shopping list. • Assisted Laundry: The washer and dryer have sensors that detect the amount of clothing inside and assist individuals

through the laundry process, simplifying a once-challenging task. • Enhanced Security: The Smart Home is equipped with a smart lock on the front door, Ring doorbells, and fall detection sensors to ensure the safety of its residents One of the key beneficiaries of the Smart Home concept is Jason, one of the new residents who responds and benefits strongly from this technology. When Jason returns home from his daily activities, the Two-Way Remote Support system (THS) checks in with him through video chat, providing companionship and support. Jason is also equipped with a Med-minder, which helps him manage his medications with ease. The Smart Home allows Jason to spend time alone, confident that the system is monitoring his well-being and ready to assist if necessary. Hope Homes has meticulously designed the Smart Home to be accessible to all individuals, irrespective of their physical abilities. With zero-entry doorways and showers, wheelchair users can navigate the space without the need for ramps or steps. The home also boasts a sprinkled, monitored fire alarm system, ensuring the safety of all residents. The realization of the Smart Home dream was made possible through a collaborative effort between Hope Homes, Charis Homes, Midwest Health Services and Stark DD. Charis Homes has always felt compassionate about this mission, and built this high-efficiency home at a more than fair price. Midwest’s staff provides services to the residents and manages the home. The partnership with Stark DD secured funding for the Smart Appliances and Devices. Moving forward, individuals in Stark county can reach out to their SSA (Service & Support Administration) at Stark DD, schedule a tour of the Smart Home, explore

COMMUNITY IMPACT Q & A > L AURIE CRAMER

QUESTION & ANSWER SESSION WITH LAURIE CRAMER Executive Director of the Autism Society of Greater Akron Q. Where do you work currently? A. Autism Society of Greater Akron Q. What is your job title here? A. Executive Director

hiring and managing staff, grants, fundraising and development, ensuring the organization is in compliance with state and local laws and regulations, and just about everything else.

Q. How long have you been employed with your current job? . A. 12 years

Q. What is the inspiration behind why you work in this field? A. My oldest son, who is now 22, has

Q. What is your Educational background? A. Bachelor’s of Science Degree,

Communications, Florida State University Master’s Degree, Organizational Development, George Washington University Q. What other professional associations are you a member of? (Board of Directors, Volunteer organizations, etc) A. Board Member, Akron Civic

Theater, Parent Representative, Family Children’s First Council,& Board Member, Autism Society of Ohio Q. What do your day-to-day job responsibilities include? A. Managing and running a small

nonprofit organization, which includes

Autism. After his diagnosis at the age of 3, I began volunteering for ASGA. As Board President in 2009 – 2011, we decided to hold a fundraising walk to raise awareness and funds to hire staff. With the incidence of Autism rising, so was the demand for consistent programs and services. We couldn’t do that as volunteers, so we set our direction toward certain goals, including hiring staff and professionalizing our board members to more than just parents of children with Autism. In 2011, I was hired as the first full-time staff person. Q. What part of your job are you most passionate about? A. It’s hard to name one, but I

recharge my battery by teaching others about Autism. It’s really important to me that our community

be kind, accepting, and supportive of my son and others with developmental disabilities. That takes the community meeting us halfway and withholding quick judgment and assumptions about why a person may be “acting that way.” We can all slow down a little just to be understanding and supportive. It’s not easy to navigate this world when you live with Autism, we can all help make it a little easier. Q. What is your favorite success story you have seen? A. Again, really hard to name

one. We are so proud of the many individuals and families we have supported over the years and who have told us their personal stories and victories along the way. It’s a true honor to be a part of people’s journey and to know that ASGA has played a role – however small it may be – in making their lives a little easier. I am also very proud of the work we have done with our Autism Friendly Communities program, specifically working with Cleveland Clinic Akron General medical personnel to better understand Autistic individuals’ support needs in a medical situation.

Q. If you could go back and talk to yourself at the beginning of your career, what advice would you give yourself? A. It’s actually advice someone gave

me when I was at the beginning of my career. If you always work hard at learning everything about your job, have a positive attitude, and work well with others, you will be ready to take on the next opportunity whenever it comes to you. I have been fortunate that I haven’t done a job search since I got out of college. Q. Do you feel like you’re making a difference in your job and why? A. I feel like I’m making a difference

and it’s because people tell us that we are. We’re very fortunate to have community partners, sponsors, stakeholders, and most importantly, individuals and families who tell us how the Autism Society of Greater Akron has made an impact in their lives. It’s what gets me out of bed on

others. The journey isn’t as hard with others who understand. Q. Where do you see your industry going moving forward? A. Nonprofits are the backbone of the

those days when I wonder if the long hours and challenges of being a small nonprofit matter. We are fortunate that we are a well-supported affiliate of the Autism Society of America and that is because our community believes in us and sees that impact, too. Q. What advice would you give to parents in your field to help navigate? A. Ask for help. I’m not the first

person to say this, but everything I ever learned was from other parents. Reach out and get to know

community, closing society’s gaps in causes near and dear to our hearts. I think as nonprofit organizations become more sophisticated, so will people’s understanding of how we operate and how important financial support is to providing these fundamental needs to our community. Q. What has been the biggest factor in your career success? A. Hard work, positive attitude, and

sometimes, closing my eyes and jumping in when I was way over my head. So far it has worked for me. Q. What is your favorite non-profit organization or volunteer opportunity? A. The Autism Society of

Greater Akron, of course!

Champion of Justice and Advocate for Special Needs Individuals Introducing you to Judge Ron Cable & family BY MELISSA KLATT • PHOTOS BY JULIAN CURET

In the heart of Akron, Ohio, a community known for its resilience and camaraderie, one man has emerged as a guiding light, a symbol of unwavering dedication to justice, compassion, and community spirit. Akron Municipal Court Judge Ron Cable is more than a judicial figure; he is a pillar of the Akron community, inspiring others with his compassion, tireless work ethic, and an extraordinary program he launched in October 2021, known as Connect. The Birth of Connect: A Beacon of Hope

In the hallowed halls of the Akron Municipal Court, Judge Ron Cable’s journey to creating the Connect program began with a profound desire to address an issue that had long been overlooked within the

56

criminal justice system. This program, initiated in October 2021, serves as a lifeline for developmentally disabled individuals who have encountered the complexities of the criminal justice system. Connect was born from Judge Cable’s firm belief that every individual, regardless of their challenges, deserves a chance at redemption, growth, and a brighter future. This remarkable initiative targets individuals adjudicated in the Akron Municipal Court who are primarily diagnosed with developmental disabilities, such as autism, Down syndrome, communication disorders, and other developmental challenges. Many of these individuals also grapple

with accompanying mental health diagnoses. The essence of Connect lies in its commitment to creating a supportive and inclusive environment for these individuals. Judge Cable recognized that these individuals needed tailored services and resources to overcome the hurdles they faced, not just punitive measures. Thus, Connect is a beacon of hope for those who have often felt marginalized or misunderstood within the criminal justice system. A Heartwarming Inspiration: Ronnie Cable

Behind the creation of Connect lies a deeply personal and profoundly touching story—a story of love, resilience, and boundless hope. At the heart of Judge Ron Cable’s dedication to helping developmentally disabled individuals stands his own special needs son, Ronnie Cable. Ronnie, at 26 years old, is a remarkable young man who lives with his family in West Akron. He shares his life with his loving mother, his younger brother, and his devoted father, Judge Ron Cable. The challenges Ronnie faced began at a tender age, as he grappled with difficulties in coping with everyday activities. The journey has been arduous, but it has been marked

by remarkable progress and unwavering support. The Cleveland Clinic Lerner School played a pivotal role in Ronnie’s education and behavior therapy. Over the years, Ronnie has made remarkable strides in his development, a testament to his indomitable spirit and the unwavering support of his family and community. In Summit County, the Cable family is fortunate to have a robust Developmental Disabilities Board and abundant resources that have allowed Ronnie and others with disabilities to lead meaningful lives.

Ronnie is an active participant in a day program called BraVo! and has successfully maintained employment through Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities (OOD). Prior to the pandemic, he proudly worked at Rob’s Café at The University of Akron, demonstrating his resilience and determination. Beyond his achievements, Ronnie is an avid enthusiast of various activities, including bowling, swimming, camping, and fishing. His joyous participation in Special Olympics swimming has earned him numerous medals, with a special fondness for freestyle and backstroke events. Ronnie’s passion for these activities is a testament to his spirit and determination, proving that individuals with developmental challenges can excel and find fulfillment in various pursuits. The Heartfelt Advocacy of the Cable Family

Autism holds a special place in the Cable family’s heart, as they have experienced its challenges and celebrated its unique strengths firsthand. They have long advocated for the importance of valuing and supporting members of the autism community, embodying the spirit of understanding and empathy that underpins the Connect program. Judge Ron Cable’s commitment to making a difference extends far beyond the walls of the courtroom. He has a wealth of experience from

his nearly two decades of service as a Magistrate at the local Domestic Relations Court, where he helped countless individuals and families navigate life’s challenges and find their path to happiness and fulfillment. Akron’s Beacon of Inspiration

Judge Ron Cable’s journey is a testament to the power of compassion, dedication, and community spirit. Through the Connect program and his unwavering support for special needs individuals, he has not only transformed lives but also inspired others to champion the cause of justice and inclusivity. As we reflect on the remarkable journey of Judge Ron Cable and the profound impact of Connect, we are reminded that each person, regardless of their challenges, has the potential to shine brightly when given the opportunity, support, and understanding they truly deserve. In the heart of Akron, Ohio, Judge Ron Cable stands as a beacon of inspiration, a symbol of the incredible difference that one person’s commitment can make in the lives of many. SP ONSOR SP OTLIGHT > TEAMMATES CENTER

Establishing Community Involvement Teammates Center WRITTEN BY SARAH SMITH

T

eammates Center LLC provides opportunities for clients with disabilities to work, socialize, and learn to be teammates with society by being active and productive participants. The organization’s niche is young adults aging out of high school, providing a continuing learning program with a communitybased focus. Peggy Peters, a former special education teacher in the StowMonroe Falls School District, opened Teammates Center LLC on October 22, 2018. Since then, Teammates has grown and opened centers in Akron, Hudson, Fairlawn, and Portage County. Although many of the individuals are young adults, Teammates Center has a wide variety of ages who attend and work at the center. Around 100 individuals currently attend Teammates in small groups with an abundance of staff in each group. The center provides adult day services to improve independence. Each day has a specific focus. Monday is money and me/selfadvocacy. Tuesday is talking and technology skills. Wednesday has what’s happening and workout skills. Cooking and safety skills are offered on Thursday. And Friday features funday activities which include trips to bowling alleys, putt putt courses, the zoo, pumpkin patches,

60

art museums, swimming pools, and other activities chosen by the clients. Vocational habilitation services are provided to better the job skills of the clients through volunteer opportunities, soft skills, and recorded data. The VOC-HAB program focuses on individuals who are close to getting jobs and helps improve their skill sets by volunteering at sites for an extended period of time to help improve work stamina. Teammates helps individuals focus on job skills by doing mock interviews and completing practice job applications to increase the chances of getting a job of their choice. In addition, Teammates keeps records of each individual to track the improvement in areas such as quality of work, stamina, and communication. Support is individualized to meet the need of the person served. The goal is to increase the independence of the people coming to Teammates so they can gain competitive employment. Teammates Center helps individuals learn to C ommunicate, R ehearse, E ducate, and W ork while attending the C.R.E.W. program. After joining our C.R.E.W. program, each person will complete an assessment and become part of the JV, Varsity, College, or Professional team within the C.R.E.W. program. The JV team works on multiple skills, with a one-year outline to move to the Teammates Varsity team. JV

team members work on hygiene skills, learning about jobs, appropriate break times, and many other skills prior to graduating to the Varsity team. After graduating to the Varsity team, the client will complete a skill set with a specific outline. Some of these skills include deciding what type of job is of interest and building job stamina. When on the College team, each client works on the skill set provided to move towards competitive employment, also known as a Teammates Professional team. Each client works on the College team for one to four years to achieve their goal of independence and obtaining a competitive employment job. While on the College team, clients fill out job applications, conduct mock and real job interviews, find job openings, and figure out schedules. After graduating from each of these teams, Teammates does not leave the individual to themselves until they are ready to be completely independent. Teammates Center continues to check-in and job coach when needed and helps each client stay employed at the job of their choice. More information about Teammates Center, the services offered, getting involved as a client or employee, and much more can be found at https/teammatescenter. org or by calling 234-571-5876.

COMMUNITY EVENT RECAP > 2 . 2 FOR 22Q

2.2 FOR 22Q

ADVOCATE. RAISE AWARENESS. MAKE A DIFFERENCE. BY SUMMERLY ROWLANDS

Izzy Snow was born on July 1st, 2021, and at 22 days old, she was diagnosed with a rare genetic condition called 22q11.2 deletion syndrome. This disorder can affect every system in the human body due to missing one tiny piece of chromosome 22. We welcome you to read up on the facts of this diagnosis along with Izzy’s personal journey thus far through our website www. my22qt.com, and we invite you to join our mailing list to receive quarterly newsletters full of updates & information. Just as we weren’t familiar with the term 22q, we quickly learned that most others aren’t either. Answers to our questions seemed unknown and it came down to figuring things out through a lot of our own research - hence the creation of my22qt. my22qt is a foundation we started in honor of our daughter, Izzy, with the mission to raise awareness, to educate others & help diagnosed families cope, and to pay it forward to the genetics division of Akron Children’s Hospital for expansion in research & services. In addition to creating the my22qt website, designing awareness apparel for our online shop, and writing as a parent contributor for this wonderful magazine, I have also been able to educate at local vendor markets and I have had amazing opportunities to speak in classrooms, in hospitals, for special needs events, and I have been interviewed on various podcasts. But the most recent accomplishment in raising awareness for my daughter and all other 22q warriors was hosting my first annual 2.2 for 22q awareness walk which took place on July 16, 2023. The walk was held at the Jackson Township park where 138 62

November 2023

of us walked 2.2 miles in unity, representing our “Her Fight is Our Fight” and “Team Izzy” awareness shirts and drawing attention from the softball tournament families and others around who stopped to ask us about the cause and made their way over to the pavilion to join us throughout the morning. The event would not have been what it was without the incredible sponsorships from The 22q Family Foundation, Microplex, Inc., Rowlands Property Management, and local realtor Courtney Hatfield, plus The Kenney/Slaughter family who

went above and beyond in providing the 2.2 for 22q t-shirts and Texas Roadhouse of Alliance who provided a delicious barbecue lunch for everyone. We also had 43 local businesses donate to the walk which abled us to put together 21 fantastic raffle baskets (which everyone thoroughly enjoyed)! I really wasn’t sure how my first big event would go, but I was completely blown away. I am so grateful to each and every person that came to support and all of those who supported from afar. While we had our walk in Ohio, we also had loved ones sending photos from their 2.2 miles in other states and even another country! As part of our mission is to pay it forward to the genetics division of Akron Children’s (as genetics is the least profitable aspect of any hospital, yet one of the most important aspects of our Izzy Snow), this event raised $3,863 – an overwhelming, incredible success!!! I am 100% looking forward to next July for our 2nd annual 2.2 for 22q awareness walk, and I hope to see you there! Feel free to follow me on Instagram @my22qt, reach out to me at my22qt@gmail.com, or check out our site to learn more. Summerly Rowlands Izzy’s mom Akron & Canton Special Needs Living

DI GI TA L ACCESS IBIL ITY > JA MES WA R NKEN

Digital Accessibility Extends Beyond Your Website BY JAMES WARNKEN

W

hen I first started my digital accessibility journey, I spent more than 2 years learning how to make websites and web applications accessible to people with disabilities and I am still learning to this day. Here is a topic that is often overlooked, accessibility extending beyond just a website or application. It should come as no surprise, but accessibility extends well beyond your website or application. Let’s take a step back for a second, how do people find and get to your website or application? Things like social media, communications, marketing, advertising, and even print materials might come to mind and each of them are correct, and each should be accessible. If you have a 100% accessible website but create inaccessible content to share on social media, how would someone with a disability ever get to your website? This question always tends to lead to a big “Ah ha” moment for people, which is completely understandable as it is a much wider perspective than the conversation typically reaches. So here is my advice to extend accessibility beyond your website or application.

do reach out, be sure to listen and respond accordingly. You should never tell someone to “just go look on the website”. 3. When it comes to print materials, provide as many alternatives as you can. Print materials can be made in large print, braille, and simplified versions to ensure users have options to fit their needs. Not everyone can scan a QR code or understand off of imagery, so share alternatives when you can.

This is just the tip of the iceberg, but is a great place to start. Thinking about accessibility is a great way to unlock creativity and push the norms while also enhancing the experience of everyone who comes across your business. Next time you open up Canva to Design a Facebook post, think about all of the ways you could recreate that content, then go out and do it! Apply accessibility to every aspect of your user experience and watch to see how it benefits everyone, not just those with disabilities.

1. When creating content for social media, create multiple formats and share them all! If a user cannot see a video, they can likely listen to the audio, and If a user cannot hear the audio, they can likely read the captions. The more variations we create and share, the more likely one of the versions is to be exactly what someone needs. Don’t be shy! 2. When it comes to communication, encourage it every chance you get and take it seriously! If a user encounters an accessibility barrier, they should know that they can reach out and they should be encouraged to do so. Once they Akron & Canton Special Needs Living

A Future Sports Star Introducing you to Antonio Liberatore BY DEBORAH RILEY • PHOTOS BY JULIAN CURET

2nd grader, Antonio Liberatore, is proof of what happens when you have a fierce advocate in your corner who refuses to accept the status quo. Antonio, who has autism, was non-verbal until he was 6-yearsold. His mother, Susie, refused to accept the feedback from therapists that he would not progress with his language. When she felt that a program was not serving Antonio’s abilities well, she would find another program. Susie recognized the smart boy that Antonio is and pushed for therapies to help him grow and gain skills. Through ABA and therapy, piece by piece things started to come together and when he started school, he was able to increase his communication, social skills, and learn how to make requests. Susie says, “Parenting with special needs is hard. There is no easy way to do it. Sometimes people will doubt you or your child. You know your child best and if something feels off, it is. I encourage parents

70

November 2023

to stay up to date as best as they can and to make sure that things are seamless between therapy and school. You are the best advocate

for your child. Even during the hard times, stand strong and proud.” Thanks to Susie continuing to stand strong for her child, he continues to thrive and see growth every day! Antonio is a busy guy! He stays as involved as he can, participating in Swimming with Autism, the Tallmadge baseball team, and playing basketball and soccer through Empower Sports. Antonio loves to play sports and be a part of the team but needs assistance. The sports programs in which he

participates have buddies who are compassionate about helping everyone! His mother feels that it is a blessing to not have to worry about Antonio fitting in or missing out on fun activities. In addition to playing sports, Antonio loves art, Disney, Mickey, Toy Story, and the Buffalo Bills. Recently, Antonio went to Legoland where he was able to tell his family “Big fun rides at Legoland”. He then told his family that he wanted to go on a special trip and they are already working on the plans. In addition, Antonio also currently attends Julie Billiart School where he is also thriving.

Susie is so appreciative of the community and resources available for Antonio. Over the years they have been able to take advantage of programs and tools from the Autism Society, Summit DD, the Autism Scholarship, and ACE Scholarship. These are ways for parents and kids to meet one another and learn from each other as well as find financial resources. Susie encourages parents to get as involved as they can. As Antonio gets older, he is developing friendships that have led to the parents creating friendships as well. Susie is thankful for her village and encourages people to find theirs.

A very important part of Antonio’s village is his Grandma and Grandpa. His grandparents have been there since day one. They have learned all they can about autism and have helped find activities for him. Antonio loves his grandparents very much and Facetimes with them often. He always looks forward to spending time with them and never wants to leave their house! His grandparents have also been vital in helping him learn to talk and spell. His grandpa just recently taught Antonio to spell his last name and he’s really got it nailed down! He knows grandma will do just about anything for him. He has such a special bond with them! Antonio’s success and growth are a testament to his family’s support and advocacy. By not accepting the prognosis given and pushing for more, Antonio has been able to exceed all expectations and he is nowhere near how far he’ll go! Akron & Canton Special Needs Living

PROFESSIONAL PERSPECTIVE > DR . KRISTINE TURKO, BCBA , CO BA

HEALTHY HEROES: Advocating for Quality Healthcare

BY DR. KRISTINE TURKO, BCBA, COBA

F

all is here, and with it comes the start of flu season. As we spend more time indoors, the chances of getting sick go up, and so does the likelihood of needing a doctor’s visit. For individuals with autism, doctor’s visits can be challenging, and the quality of care they receive can suffer. Routine check-ups and vaccinations are often skipped, adding to the risk. Autism is a developmental disorder that affects 1 in 36 people (CDC, 2023), with boys being four times more likely to have it than girls. It’s found across all ethnic groups, although it’s diagnosed later and less frequently in underserved communities due to barriers in healthcare access. Autism comes with characteristics like difficulty in communication and social interaction, rigid routines, repetitive behavior, and specific interests. These traits make medical care more complicated, and caregivers often need to advocate for those on the spectrum. Many autistic adults skip routine appointments like check-ups, vaccinations, or

74

November 2023

dental visits due to the fear of being misunderstood or ignored. A recent study published in the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders examined healthcare workers’ proficiency in treating autistic patients (Corden, Brewer, & Cage, 2022). The findings suggest that healthcare workers often lack knowledge, self-confidence, and training in treating autistic patients. This creates potential challenges for both healthcare providers and patients. While medical professionals work on better training for patientcentered care that recognizes individual needs, we can advocate for those with autism by helping healthcare workers accommodate sensory, physical, and communication needs. Here are a few suggestions: • Use a verbal and visual picture schedule that outlines the steps of an office visit to minimize uncertainty and reduce anxiety. • Request a quiet waiting space at the doctor’s office to minimize sensory overload.

• Request the first or last appointment of the day when the office is not as busy. • Establish a relationship with your healthcare provider prior to a physical exam by scheduling a pre-visit. • Role-play the office visit or find a youtube video that demonstrates the process. It’s critical to recognize the unique challenges individuals with autism face when seeking medical care. Understanding the characteristics of autism and advocating for sensoryfriendly and accommodating healthcare environments can make a significant difference in the well-being of those on the spectrum. While healthcare professionals work on improving their training, we all have a role to play in ensuring that individuals with autism receive the quality care they deserve. If you would like the opportunity to practice going to the doctor’s office, see the event information below!

HEALTHY HEROES: PRACTICE GOING TO THE DOCTOR’S OFFICE November 30, 2023, 4-6pm

Going to the doctor can be stressful! For autistic individuals, there may be extra stress because of sensory and communication challenges. The Spectrum Education Center at the University of Mount Union is housed in a building that has 4 mock doctor offices where our Physician Assistant students practice their craft. We are opening the space to families to allow them to explore and prepare for upcoming healthcare appointments. This event is free and includes fun activities to help prepare your child for successful trips to the doctor’s office! Everyone is welcome, regardless of diagnosis. Quality Service and Customer Relationships HENRY HEATING & COOLING BY SARAH SMITH

H

enry Heating & Cooling has been in business since 1960. The primary focus for many years was Commercial & Industrial Service and Design Build Installation. Early client relationships from many years ago are still Henry’s client relationships today! The customer first focus has never changed and never will. Henry Heating, Cooling & Plumbing is a full-service, installation, maintenance, design-build, engineering, controls, and indoor air quality (IAQ) contracting firm. The company offers a service team to handle residential, commercial, and industrial maintenance, demand service, controls, and IAQ on the HVAC and plumbing side. The installation team handles residential, commercial, and industrial replacement, design-build, plan and spec, engineering, controls, and IAQ on the HVAC and plumbing side. A sales team controls all aspects of residential, commercial, and industrial needs while an internal staff supports all field, sales, and production teams. The management staff allows individuals to grow in their respective roles, continue their education, and advance within the organization. “We are a ‘Family First’ organization and every team member’s family is an extension of our own,” said Jeff Ford, General Manager. One of Henry’s primary focuses has been on indoor air quality. Products that have been a priority for customers are those that combat dirt, allergens, and germs. The “Perfect Air Purifier” residential indoor air quality product can be added to most residential systems if there is room between the return air duct and the furnace. In the commercial and industrial world, Henry has been installing plasma ion generators and I-Wave in-line duct air cleaners.

Henry Heating, Cooling & Plumbing knows that clean, comfortable, and efficient homes and businesses create the backbone of the community. By providing the best quality service and support, Henry helps build the businesses that keep communities running and ensure homes are safe and comfortable. Jeff’s father was his mentor growing up. He received a master’s degree in business and finance and was the vice president of a national bank. He then retired early and followed his dream of becoming an independent business owner in the restaurant industry. Jeff and his siblings understood what it was going to take to make it in the business world after watching him change careers and fight for what he wanted. “I was fortunate to have a second business mentor when I was growing up,” Jeff continued. “He owned an HVAC contracting firm in Columbus, Ohio, and his son and I were very good friends. We would spend time at his dad’s shop and over the years I got a decent understanding of what the HVAC industry was all about.” After college, Jeff started work at Lennox Industries, Inc. and completed a nine-month training program. With a choice on where in the country he wanted to begin his career with Lennox, he chose Michigan because it was a growing market, only four hours from home, and a good working environment. “I spent seven years with Lennox Industries, Inc. and won their prestigious “L” Award as a 24-year-old, the youngest ever in the corporation’s history,” explained Jeff. “I spent the next four years at The Trane Company and developed a program called “Legion of Merit” which was adopted by Trane National. My desire was to write training manuals, so I made the decision

to move from the manufacturing world to the contracting world. The last 20 years have been on the contracting side of the business and it is truly my passion!” “What is unique about our business is simple; it is our people!” Jeff exclaimed. “Every team member at Henry Heating, Cooling & Plumbing has a voice. It is truly a family business. And when I say family, I mean it. There are second and third generations of the same family working here, as well as uncles, nephews, brothers, and cousins. Our focus is on our customers! Ask our customers if they have developed a personal relationship with their technician, their installation team, or their controls team and I bet the response is majority yes. Whether it is residential, commercial, or industrial, the Henry team member/client relationship is strong! We want to grow our group of clients more every day!” Jeff lives in Glenmoor with his wife, Dana, who is a managing nurse at Crossroads Hospice. Jeff’s son, Mason, works for Henry Heating, Cooling & Plumbing as a service technician. Henry Heating, Cooling & Plumbing is located at 2370 State Route 516 NW in Dover. “We have used Henry’s Heating and Cooling for our Residential HVAC needs and have been very pleased with everyone. The crew who installed our new unit worked very efficiently and took great care to ensure our property was in as good as shape if not better than when they arrived. Henry’s also assumed the preventative maintenance and service on our other equipment they did not provide and this transition has been seamless.” — BERNIE & THERESA DEWEES, GLENMOOR RESIDENTS

“We have been very pleased with the choice of Henry Heating Cooling & Plumbing as our provider. They treat you with their full attention and commitment, from the people at the top to the friendly knowledgeable technicians serving our household. The response time has been awesome, the explanations to an issue simple, and the quality at the highest level. They do it right the first time, all the time” — JOHN & RHONDA SYPEK, GLENMOOR RESIDENTS

“We have used Henry Heating on a couple of occasions and have been very satisfied. We had them work on a plumbing job and Rick provided us with alternatives that helped us come in under budget and it was a better overall solution. We also bought their maintenance plan for our furnace/ac and the team was very professional, trustworthy, and responsive. We highly recommend Henry Heating and will continue to use them in the future.” — VINNY & NANCY LICATA, GLENMOOR RESIDENTS Akron & Canton Special Needs Living
