n the heart of Canton, where cultural vibrancy meets the warm embrace of community, unfolds the inspiring journey of Bodhi Ly, a spirited four-year-old, and his parents, Cassie and Tony Ly. Nestled within the colorful corridors of Canton City Schools, Bodhi’s story is a symphony of love, resilience, and the creation of “Bodhi Bubbles,” a private label prosecco that mirrors the effervescence he brings into their lives.

BODHI’S DIAGNOSIS: A PATH PAVED WITH LOVE AND CHALLENGES Bodhi, a nonverbal dynamo, was diagnosed with autism in June 2022. For parents, Cassie and Tony Ly, owners of Basil Asian Bistro and Lucca in downtown Canton, the diagnosis process was a labyrinth of emotions. Beginning their journey when Bodhi was just 15 months old, they navigated

“Bodhi is enrolled in special needs preschool, speech therapy, and ABA therapy,”

a landscape filled with uncertainties and a daunting 15-month waiting period. The Ly family sought guidance from Help Me Grow, a beacon that illuminated their path through red tape and uncertainties, providing insights into the intricate world of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). As Bodhi found his footing in environments tailored to his needs, the Ly family discovered strength in vulnerability, turning the challenges into stepping stones of growth. “Bodhi is enrolled in special needs preschool, speech therapy, and ABA therapy,” says Cassie and Tony Ly. “People don’t realize how difficult receiving a diagnosis can be! We were told when we started the process that the wait was fifteen months. Most therapies we have inquired on have a waitlist to start. The process can feel so overwhelming. It’s important not to give up.”

BODHI’S KALEIDOSCOPIC WORLD: FROM PUZZLE PIECES TO PROSECCO Bodhi, a jigsaw puzzle maestro with an infectious love for music, from Disney tunes to Taylor Swift, sparked a revelation in his parents, Cassie and Tony. Inspired by his spirit and the desire to contribute to autism-related programming, they launched “Bodhi Bubbles,” a private-label prosecco, in November 2022. A portion of the proceeds are dedicated to supporting autism-related initiatives, with Pegasus Farm being the recipient of their first donation in April 2023. The creation of “Bodhi Bubbles” became more than a venture; it became a celebration of Bodhi’s uniqueness and a commitment to raising awareness about autism within their community.

THE ‘IT TAKES A VILLAGE’ MOSAIC In Bodhi’s preschool journey, Cassie and Tony found unwavering support from teachers, aids, and the community at large. Janice and Michelle from Help Me Grow played pivotal roles as guiding stars, making the IEP process less intimidating. The Ly family realized the true meaning of “It Takes a Village” as they were surrounded by a network of love and understanding. Co-workers, friends, and business partners embraced their journey, allowing both Cassie and Tony to continue working full-time while ensuring Bodhi receives the necessary counseling and therapy. “We feel like awareness in general is so important,” says Cassie Ly. “We have learned so much in the past few years about Autism, services in our community, gaps in Special Needs Mideastern Ohio

service… Having a special needs child can feel very lonely. We have the privilege to be in front of many people daily and meet many other individuals who have a child or close relative that has a diagnosis and it’s become so much more normalized in our lives just by being open about our journey. You are not alone!” Bodhi Ly’s story is a symphony echoing the resilience, love, and creativity of a family in Canton. Through the challenges of autism diagnosis, the creation of “Bodhi Bubbles,” and the unwavering support from their community, Cassie and Tony Ly showcase the transformative power of embracing Bodhi’s uniqueness. His journey becomes an anthem of hope, a melody of acceptance, and a celebration of the colorful tapestry that unfolds when love, community, and a sparkling spirit like “Bodhi Bubbles” come together in harmony.

Protecting Today, Securing Tomorrow RBDLLP & Associates 32

I

n the heart of North Canton, Ohio, insurance takes on a new meaning with Rich Corns, the visionary founder of RBDLLP & Associates. In a profession often perceived as a numbers game, Rich has reshaped the narrative, infusing empathy and communitycentric values into the very core of his agency.

A JOURNEY OF REVELATION:

Rich Corns embarked on his insurance career in 2015, seeking the allure of freedom, income, and flexibility. However, what initially seemed like a pursuit for personal gain evolved into a profound understanding of the responsibility insurers bear in safeguarding individuals and families. Today, with the wisdom gained over the years, Rich recognizes that insurance is not solely about price points but about getting it right from the outset to spare clients from unwelcome surprises down the road. FROM IDEATION TO CREATION:

In February 2022, Rich Corns took a bold step by launching RBDLLP & Associates. The agency’s bedrock values revolve around meeting the community’s diverse needs. Rather than fixating on the immediate, Rich and his team focus on big-picture considerations to ensure clients’ protection not just today but well into the future, especially in the face of unforeseen emergencies. SIMPLIFYING COMPLEXITY:

RBDLLP & Associates makes the complex landscape of insurance accessible and understandable. They are committed to helping clients comprehend not only what they are purchasing but also the potential repercussions of choosing the wrong products and solutions. By distilling complexity into simplicity, RBDLLP & Associates empowers clients to make informed decisions about their insurance coverage.

THE FUNDAMENTAL FOUNDATION OF FINANCIAL SUCCESS:

Rich Corns refers to life insurance as the fundamental foundation of financial success. RBDLLP & Associates offers a range of life insurance options, providing clients with a robust safety net for themselves and their families. COMMUNITY COMMITMENT:

Beyond insurance, RBDLLP & Associates is deeply committed to community service. Rich understands the power of collective effort and actively participates in hands-on volunteering, donations, and partnerships with nonprofits and community organizations. Rooted in a belief that it is our collective responsibility to care for one another, Rich and his team actively support missions such as Compassion Delivered, Thanksgiving Heroes, Wounded Warriors, Folded Flags, and local athletic programs. They also have a history of supporting community events through their sponsorships including our own Special Needs Movie Night that took place in 2023! In a world where insurance is often perceived as a necessary but detached transaction, RBDLLP & Associates stands out by putting the community at the forefront. Rich Corns’ journey from seeking personal gains to embracing a higher purpose has transformed RBDLLP & Associates into a beacon of communitycentric insurance, where protection is not just a policy but a commitment to the well-being of North Canton and beyond. To learn more, check out their Facebook page by searching RBDLLP & Associates or you can give them a call at 330-494-1411. Top of Form

FOCUSING ON IMPACTFUL COVERAGES:

The agency places a special emphasis on two key coverages—liability and uninsured motorist insurance. Recognizing that these directly impact clients’ daily lives, RBDLLP & Associates ensures that these coverages not only protect current assets but also safeguard future earnings, securing both the present and the future. n the heart of Northeast Ohio, a beacon of hope for feline friends emerged in January 2022 - Alleycats & Aristocats. This passionate nonprofit organization has dedicated itself to rescuing and advocating for cats in need, offering adoption services, Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) programs, and unique partnerships that extend their impact beyond the shelter walls.

Square, an adoption center nestled at 620 E Smith Rd in Medina, Ohio. Boasting a welcoming atmosphere, this center has become a haven for cats and cat enthusiasts alike. The community has embraced the initiative, with two free-roaming areas providing prospective adopters the chance to interact with the cats and kittens in a natural setting.

Beyond the purrs and playful antics, Alleycats & Aristocats works with organizations that empower individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Among them, I am Boundless is a key partner, sending a group of dedicated volunteers to work with the shelter cats. These remarkable individuals provide essential assistance in cat training, socialization, and overall care. The collaboration not only enriches the lives of the shelter cats but also offers valuable learning experiences for the volunteers. As they engage in daily activities, they gain insights into proper cat care, fostering a sense of responsibility and nurturing skills that extend beyond the shelter environment. For Jennifer Doyle, the organization’s Director, the cause hits close to home. Her 26-year-old son, Logan, who is nonverbal and on the Autism spectrum, actively contributes to the shelter’s mission.

Jennifer’s personal connection adds a layer of authenticity to Alleycats & Aristocats’ commitment, showcasing the transformative power of compassion and inclusivity. Pint-sized Paws and Big Hearts: The Next Generation of Cat Enthusiasts

The organization’s board member, Jessica Mason, also brings her own son into the feline fold. Her son, Jonah, featured in the January edition of our magazine, is a regular visitor to Cats off the Square. Jonah’s enthusiasm for socializing with the cats mirrors the inclusive spirit of Alleycats & Aristocats. As these volunteers interact with the cats, a magical synergy unfolds. The gentle purrs and playful antics become therapeutic tools, easing stress and anxiety. Through these interactions, Alleycats & Aristocats is helping deliver compassion into the hearts of the next generation. Alleycats & Aristocats stands as a shining example of a non-profit organization making a tangible difference in the lives of cats and humans alike. Their approach to cat rescue, community engagement, and inclusivity demonstrates that every cat, regardless of their background, has a unique story worth celebrating. As Cats off the Square continues to be a hub of love and compassion, Alleycats & Aristocats invites everyone to join their cause, proving that when it comes to making a difference, even the smallest paws leave the biggest prints. Q. How long have you been employed with your current job? A. I have been employed

with Creative Rehab for 17 years with the last 5 years as Divisional Director. Q. How long have you been employed in this industry? A. 17 years, Creative Rehab

was my first experience working in the vocational rehab industry. Q. What is your Educational background? A. Honors Bachelors

degree in Psychology from Kent State University Q. What other professional associations are you a member of? A. I am a volunteer

youth teacher for our Parish School of Religion at Christ the Servant Parish in Canton, OH. Q. What do your day-today job responsibilities include? A. Every day is very

different! My job duties include a variety of functions. I am responsible for conducting our new client intake meetings and setting up community work experiences. I oversee my staff and all of the services we provide in my two counties. And of course, there is report writing. Q. What is the inspiration behind why you work in this field? A. Throughout high school

and into early college, I

struggled with anxiety and started having panic attacks. My mental health started to decline and I found myself becoming more interested in how to help others with the same problems. employers will continue to grow and flourish as the information is put out there. Q. What has been the biggest factor in your career success? A. Having a supportive team

at Creative Rehab has made a huge difference for me. I know that I have caring individuals who have my best interests at heart. They are there to listen and provide advice. I could not do my job without them. Q. What is your favorite non-profit organization or volunteer opportunity? A. Catholic Charities

does so much good in the community. The services they offer cover such a large scope that most people do not even realize. They bring hope to those in need.

Q. What advice would you give to someone who is new to your field? A, Be patient with yourself.

Sometimes helping someone achieve their goal takes time, especially if it is to be the right fit. Q. If you could go back and talk to yourself at the beginning of your career, what advice would you give yourself? A. Meet everyone where

they are. Take time to listen to the whys and the path that has led them to that moment in time. We learn so much by just listening. Q. Do you feel like you’re making a difference in your job and why? A. Most days I do feel like

I’m making a difference, even if it’s just to listen and bring hope to someone who has just begun to deal with a new medical situation or diagnosis. On other days, it’s the Special Needs Mideastern Ohio

BY JASON DRESDEN

Hire us! It’s ok…. REALLY IT IS!

PROFESSIONAL PERSPECTIVE > JASON DRESDEN

Are you a business owner who struggles to find quality, long-term employees? Is your staff retention rates in shambles? How about your company morale, down in the dumps too? Are your diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives close to zero?

Well, I’m going to let you in on a little secret, there is a huge pool of talented, hard-working and qualified candidates with disabilities waiting to be hired! That’s right, you read it correctly, WAITING to be hired. So as a hiring manager or business owner, how do you engage and gain access to these ready and waiting job seekers, and how come you don’t know about them? It is becoming more and more

• Increased revenue • Businesses are seeing an uptick in revenue, because these workers tend to be more focused and productive and can get more done in a smaller amount of time, not to mention paying attention to higher quality results • Improved morale • This talented group of job seekers always have the best attitudes when it comes to working and helping others. They are so excited to be at work, that their positivity carries over to other staff therefore improving the overall worker satisfaction and culture • Unexplored Workforce • Alleviate vacant positions you have trouble filling by now understanding that there is a gigantic workforce available • Diversity, Equity & Inclusion • If you actively exercise (DEI) it will create a more extensive talent pool in your workplace which nurtures a healthy company culture and more satisfied workers. That means better productivity, lower turnover, and increased revenue…that’s a win win. Now, how to get this going!

common for businesses to hire people with disabilities and the resources to access these job seekers are becoming more and more available. Contact your local county’s Board of Developmental Disabilities to find out more. Now that you know where to go find these future workers, what are the benefits of hiring them:

• State and Federal tax incentives • Federal financial incentives include the Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC), the Architectural Barrier Removal Tax Deduction and the Disabled Access Credit. The State of Ohio also has tax credits available as well

You need to take a look at your internal policies and procedures and it starts from the top down. You must have buy in from your leadership to create and embrace change in the workplace. I’ve seen company’s that have been running the same old school hiring and screening policies for years and they wonder why they can’t fill positions. Take a long hard look at your HR and recruiting procedures to see what you can to do to get with the times and, change. According to The Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities, “Employment First,” the idea that competitive employment in an integrated setting should be the priority outcome for people with disabilities, is a national movement that continues to gain momentum. Governor John Kasich signed the Employment First Executive Order in March 2012, making Ohio one of 26 states with an official Employment First policy or legislation. A policy sets the direction but will not alone improve employment outcomes for people with developmental disabilities. Successful implementation of Employment First requires a multi-pronged approach and a long-term commitment to systems change. So 10 years ago now, Ohio became an Employment First state, you feel outdated now? You can check out the website at https://ohioemploymentfirst. org/ and under the “Employers” tab you can find a wealth of information to get things rolling. In conclusion, immediately take a hard look at restructuring your internal DEI and recruiting policies, look up the guidelines for implementing Employment First initiatives, and gain access to this highly qualified talent pool of job seekers. I promise you will not only see impactful results but you will be providing meaningful, integrated, and competitive employment for some of the best workers out there. Special Needs Mideastern Ohio

PROFESSIONAL PERSPECTIVE > JARED CHEVRAUX

INCLUSIVE DESIGN IS FOR EVERYONE Why you should include it in your next remodel. BY JARED CHEVRAUX

When I speak with my peers in the home access world, we all agree this niche is still in its infancy. The need for inclusive design is growing, and, thankfully, more design and construction professionals are recognizing that need every day. The disciplines of inclusive design will be as ubiquitous as green building in the next three to five years. Now is a great time to incorporate it in your next home project. — JARED CHEVRAUX

W

hile the market for Living in Place and accessible remodeling continues to grow, let’s not ignore the crossover appeal inclusive design has for all people – regardless of their mobility needs. Home access is the foundation of my business, and it’s where I carved my niche in the industry. In fact, our showroom was designed with accessibility at its core and aptly named the Home Access Design Studio. What surprises most people is that up to half of our clients come to us looking for a typical kitchen or bath remodel, without any accessibility needs on their wish list. They come to our showroom because our designs are on trend and our work is consistently high quality – the expected value propositions of a remodeling client. I use that as an opportunity to teach what inclusive design means and why it makes sense to incorporate it into any project we take on. The idea is to design a space that does more than just meet the current needs of the people living there. In this article, I will highlight some of my favorite design features.

48

February 2024

1. THE FUTURE-PROOF DESIGN CONCEPT. Let’s face it, we never know what tomorrow will bring. Life changes fast, and as progress in medicine has increased our expected lifespan, it’s also increased the likelihood we will face mobility challenges in our lifetime. Something as minor as recovering from a sprained ankle can be easier in a home designed with access in mind. Incorporating these features into our remodels now will save us from reinvesting in them when life happens and those features become a need later. Favorite design tip: When remodeling a bathroom, block between the studs for easy installation of grab bars and a bench in the future. When in doubt, over-block and take a photo that can be referenced later. 1. SAFETY IS ALWAYS IN STYLE. Most falls and accidents in the home happen in the bathroom – usually in the wet space. We can prevent those falls from happening through thoughtful design that does not detract from the style and functionality of the space. Favorite design tip: There are many manufacturers offering designer grab bars that match the room’s hardware and can double as a towel bar, a shampoo shelf, or a toilet tissue holder. Hide them in plain sight, and they will always be there when someone needs them.

1. VISITABILITY. We know the kitchen is where everyone congregates whether we plan it that way or not. It’s a busy place, so designing with traffic flow in mind can make it more enjoyable for everyone. When possible, I like to push the island out 60 inches away from the surrounding countertops. This leaves plenty of room for the wheelchairs and walkers in our lives, or the neighbor stopping by with twins in the Stroller. Consider variable heights in seating for the kitchen as well. Choosing dining-height chairs at the table and counter-height stools at the island is an easy way to provide options for people with limited mobility. We’re not leaving the bathroom out of this one, either. A wider door into the half-bath and a grab bar/ toilet tissue holder combo at the commode are subtle features that can make a big difference to a visitor facing mobility challenges. Favorite design tip: Appliance garages are a great way to keep the coffee maker and toaster oven out of sight, without having to lift them from the base cabinets and plug them in. 1. CROSSOVER APPEAL & WHAT’S ON TREND. Our company has been installing barrier-free showers to meet the needs of our clients since it was founded in 2011. Each year, curbless showers with a level entry have grown in popularity both in new construction and

remodeling. They’re the same thing! If you opt for a wide-swinging glass door instead of bypass or sliding doors, you now have a rollin-capable shower without deviating from the trend of a curbless shower. Taller vanities, while on trend, are also easier on the back and mean less bending down for the user. Take the freebies of inclusive design whenever you can. Favorite design tip: Achieve the spa-inspired luxury shower of your dreams while designing for access. Include a hand shower on a slide bar (bonus if it’s a grab bar) and a bench or folding seat in your curbless shower. 1. RESALE VALUE & THE FUTURE HOMEBUYER. Every feature discussed so far, when designed with an emphasis on style, should net a better return than most projects when it comes time to sell your home. Inclusive design will also attract a broader audience of homebuyers if it can meet the needs of someone living with a disability or mobility challenge. The interest and appeal will target seniors and the baby boomer segment, which the realty industry predicts will be the core segment of homebuyers for the foreseeable future. Favorite design tip: We know kitchens and baths sell homes. Incorporating some or all the design aspects covered will help you sell your home faster and at a better price point. Nurturing Lives, One Individual at a Time Ali Residential Services BY MELISSA KLATT

Here at home in Canton, Ohio, Ali Residential Services stands as a beacon of warmth and care, dedicated to fostering ‘individual enrichment’ in various forms. As a non-profit organization, their vision, born in 2004, has blossomed into a haven for approximately 44 clients, a testament to their commitment to being a timely response to an underserved segment of society in Northeast Ohio. A VISION OF ENRICHMENT

Julie Ali and Cleo Lucas, the driving forces behind Ali Residential Services, envisioned a place where quality services go hand in hand with compassion. Their organizational cause, deeply rooted in becoming more visible and accessible, has become a guiding light for those in need. In a post-pandemic world, their integrated treatment plans have proven effective, offering a compassionate alternative to traditional nursing home care. Looking ahead to 2024 and beyond, Ali Residential Services aims to extend their reach, becoming an even more comprehensive healthcare facility with Personal Care staff, RNs, LPNs, and Home Health Aides. AN INCLUSIVE APPROACH TO CARE

Ali Residential Services extends a lifeline to the senior community, the mental health community, and the home health aide community. Using avenues like Medicaid, Medicare, and private insurance, they enhance the lives of non-institutionalized individuals, citizens with disabilities, and those in need of mental health assessments. The organization firmly believes that quality of life does not diminish with age, and this belief fuels its mission to provide a well-rounded experience in healthy, safe, and happy living. SUPPORTING THE SPECIAL NEEDS COMMUNITY

At the core of their approach is effective communication with individuals and their families. Tailoring treatment plans to individual needs, Ali Residential Services strives to create an environment conducive to sustained health and happiness. They firmly reject the notion that

quality of life diminishes with age, standing as a beacon that celebrates the fact that life’s greatest pleasures come from giving and being of service to those who need it most. “Primarily, we initiate a system of communication with the individuals (themselves) and/or their family members - as to the most effective way to begin treatment plan and garner an in-depth lifestyle understanding that is most adequate, comfortable, or conducive to the sustained health of our clients,” says Douglas Hill and John Lucas, Jr. “We are always seeking new avenues to offer a well-rounded experience in healthy, safety, and happy living. We DO NOT believe that quality of life diminishes with age. It is for these reasons and more that we believe we are a highly sought after ‘friend of the family’. We believe that one of life’s greatest pleasures and satisfactions is found in giving and being of service to those who need it most.” LENDING A HELPING HAND

Ali Residential Services addresses challenges like self-esteem, recognizing it as a vital aspect of overall well-being. They seek to uplift clients by alleviating physical concerns, understanding that feeling good physically often translates to improved self-esteem. They serve as a support system, lifting burdens from overwhelmed families and providing certified individuals to bring joy into the lives of their loved ones. GET INVOLVED!

For those passionate about senior and mental health services, Ali Residential Services welcomes applications for home health aides, LPNs, and RNs. Contacting them via email at info@aliresidential.com is a great starting point for those eager to contribute to their cause. Ali Residential Services is not just an organization; it’s a lifeline for those in need, a testament to the power of compassion, and a warm embrace for individuals and families seeking support on their journey toward enrichment and well-being. REMOTE SUPP ORT SERVICES > TRUCARE

Where Technology Meets Empathy TruCare Provider Services

T

he thought of how technology can help someone with disabilities might seem too futuristic for some of us. We hear about it in the news or read about it in social media and other materials. Yet, what is it, and how does that work? How can it really help someone with a physical or developmental disability? Does one have to give up their support staff to get this technology? Can they work together? Who knows any of this information? TruCare Provider Services does, and we are happy to answer whatever questions you want to ask. Technology is developing rapidly and can include video cameras, iPads, medication dispensers, motion sensors, device applications, adaptive switches/ utensils, twoway talk or video devices, auto shut-off devices for electronics, mobility aids, adaptive keyboards, smart glasses, wheelchairs and walkers, braille displays and magnifiers, speech recognition systems, cognitive aids, physical modifications in the environment, and even a robot. These tools have been developed to increase one’s ability to live

A Brave Heart Triumphing Over Challenges Meet Jonah Mason

T

BY ANDREA HURR

here doesn’t ever seem to be a one-size-fits-all diagnosis for a child in the special needs community, and there isn’t a onesize-fits-all treatment plan either. Jessica Mason knows this all too well in regards to her son Jonah and she has taken a multifaceted approach to helping him. 10-year-old Jonah who aspires to become a firefighter paramedic one day, has encountered many hurdles and struggles in his life so far. Jonah has autism, ADHD, and was diagnosed with epilepsy at age 4. His family describes him as “someone who has multiple colanders on his head, one for each condition. The little information that was getting through was funneled through the multiple colanders making it hard for him to learn and grow.” Jonah was struggling in public school as he was getting lost in the shuffle and his needs were not being met. Adding to that was a pandemic with virtual classrooms which did not

58

February 2024

work for him. This left both child and parents exceptionally frustrated. However, Jonah’s parents refused to give up and sought change. Enter Julie Billiart School in Akron and their lives were changed for the better. Jonah started there halfway through first grade. Where previously he was struggling with reading, writing, and cognitive thinking, now he is thriving- reading, writing, and getting the support and help he needs to learn and grow. “Finding a school that is supportive and understands his needs was the best thing to happen to Jonah and our family,” says Jessica. Julie Billiart is a school that nurtures and empowers students with learning and social differences. Julie Billiart recognizes and celebrates the fact that success looks different for every student, according to their website. Another part of their multifaceted approach involves a controversial treatment that has been extremely beneficial for Jonah.

At the time of his epilepsy diagnosis, Jonah was having 20 seizures per hour while sleeping and 5 an hour while awake. It is a stressful disorder to manage daily and many things would trigger Jonah’s seizures. Their lives revolved around this condition with many medications taken daily and worries about what would trigger a seizure. Adding to the stress were all of the doctor visits and appointments surrounding it. Jessica says that it wasn’t until Jonah started medical cannabis for his epilepsy that they got to a point where his seizures were truly considered “well controlled”. Medical cannabis has allowed him to get off of 2 of his 3 epilepsy medications. “He takes a high CBD, low THC tincture 3-4 times a day. There’s still so much stigma around medical cannabis but once we tell our story and how it has changed our lives and stopped the seizures, people tend to change the way they think of it. It’s just another medication in our house, and it’s working with less side effects than traditional epilepsy medications. We want people to know how beneficial medical cannabis has been and continues to be for our son.” Another therapy that has brought the Mason’s much success is with animals. Jonah and his family volunteer at Alleycats & Aristocats, a cat rescue located in Medina that operates Cats Off The Square- a cat café and adoption center. “Jonah enjoys fostering cats and kittens. Before fostering he would come home from school and have a crying and screaming tantrum, now he comes home and cuddles the cats and takes a nap with them,” says Jessica. “The rescue is very accepting and supportive as many of the volunteers are [people with autism] or have children/ grandchildren on the spectrum. Finding a group of likeminded people has been very good for our family.”

Now that Jonah’s epilepsy is under control, he is thriving at a school that specializes in teaching students with special needs, and he has found an outlet with fostering cats, so he can enjoy life more fully. Jonah plays with school friends outside of school and joins daily online video game matches with them. He loves to go to Cedar Point which is something his epilepsy would have held him back from previously. Jonah also loves camping and loves going to the local fire department where the firemen have been teaching him what they do. The firemen have embraced Jonah and love having him visit. They have been instrumental in fostering his desire to become a fireman one day. The whole family has also rallied around Jonah’s love for cats by turning their camper into a food truck to sell hot dogs to benefit the cat rescue. Selling dogs for the cats! It’s truly a family affair. Lastly, Jessica says, “Having a child with multiple special needs is one of the hardest jobs as a parent. Seeing him not make milestones or advance in school is devastating. We’ve learned that we have to constantly advocate for him and help him learn new skills. Having a supportive school environment made all the difference in the world. Our advice to others is to never stop advocating for your child and don’t give up!” Special Needs Mideastern Ohio

Dribbling Through Challenges Introducing you to cory michaleca true point guard for inclusion BY ANDREA HURR • PHOTOS BY JULIAN CURET

E

nzo Ferrari said, “Don’t run away from challenges, run over them”. This is a favorite quote of 19-year-old Cory Michalec! Cory graduated from Tallmadge High School in 2022 and had great support both in the schools and the community, which has allowed him to flourish. Cory, who uses a

wheelchair himself, faced numerous challenges growing up, particularly in assessing the same programs as the other kids. However, he refused to let these obstacles define him. Cory was instrumental in bringing the Wheelchair Basketball Program to Tallmadge City Schools as well as helping

to grow the Tallmadge Challenger Baseball League into what it is today! Cory’s parents Greg and Tiffany, who are always a big part of his life, were fortunate to discover ASPO (Adaptive Sports Ohio) when Cory was 62

younger. With Cory, they have since been involved with the Wheelchair Basketball program and are now looking into Power Soccer. Cory has also been playing on the Tallmadge Challenger Baseball team with his dad

since he was 5-years-old. In 2015 the Michalec’s were asked to take over the Challenger program and through the years they were able to grow the program from just 14 players to an incredible 108 players participating in this last season! “There are programs out there but you have to be an advocate for your child because

people really are receptive to seeing kids with special needs excel,” says Tiffany. Tallmadge Wheelchair Basketball was first offered when Cory was in 8th grade and he continued playing until he graduated. This is considered a varsity sport and Cory was able to letter in it! This is a major accomplishment in the world of athletics

For information on Adaptive Sports Ohio (ASPO) please contact Lisa Followay at 330601-1400 or info@adaptivesportsohio.org

and proves his dedication on and off the court. He is currently enjoying his new role as a volunteer coach for the organization. Cory credits his parents for helping to get him to where he is today. He says that he “admires them both in their own respective ways.” Even with as much as sports has helped Cory succeed his journey towards greater inclusion and accessibility would not have been possible without the support of his family and the community. Recognizing the need for a more wheelchairaccessible home, Cory’s family made necessary modifications, empowering him to be more selfsufficient. His parents played a crucial role in shaping his character, and Cory acknowledges their influence with deep admiration.

Cory also has a job at the Stow-Kent Giant Eagle where he is a Greeter. If you see him there make sure to say hello. He loves his position and plans on continuing to work and earn money so that he can continue to be more self-sufficient. When not at work or coaching you can catch Cory cheering for pretty much all of the Ohio sports teams including the Browns, Guardians, Cavaliers, Buckeyes, and of course his Challenger Baseball team. Cory’s story is a true testament to the power of resilience, community support, and the determination to overcome barriers. He continues to serve as an inspiration for others to pursue their passions and to break down social barriers, one challenge at a time!
