ALTERING A LIFE

DIAGN O SIS

O

INTRODUCING YOU TO LUCIE DILLION

COVER STORY > LUCIE DILLON
PHOTOS BY MICHELLE HERDLICK

In the heart of Bolivar, nestled within the tight-knit community of Tusky Valley Elementary School, lives a spirited second-grader whose resilience shines brighter than any adversity she faces.

Meet Lucie Dillon, an eight-year-old with an infectious smile and a spirit that refuses to be dimmed, even in the face of life’s toughest challenges. Her journey, though marked by unexpected twists and daunting hurdles, is a testament to the unwavering power of love, determination, and the support of a community that rallies behind its own in times of need. From seemingly ordinary beginnings to a life-altering diagnosis, Lucie’s story is one of courage, strength, and the remarkable ability to find joy amidst the storm.

HER BEGINNING: FROM ANTICLIMACTIC TO LIFE-ALTERING

Lucie, the only girl among four brothers, had a love for video games and cherished her close relationship with her father. Her days were filled with laughter and sibling antics until January of 2023, when her story took an unexpected turn. What began as recurring low-grade fevers soon escalated into alarming symptoms of fatigue and loss of appetite. Concerned, her family sought answers, leading to a diagnosis that would change their lives forever.

Her mom, Maria Dillon, shares the beginning of Lucie’s story that took a heart-dropping turn:

“Starting in the beginning of January, we started to notice some unusual things going on with her, primarily with a recurring low-grade fever. As the

days and weeks passed, her appetite continued to decrease and her energy also dwindled. By the end of January, we decided it was time to get to the bottom of whatever was going on with her. The next part of her story unfolded like a monsoon. After ruling out a UTI, I asked for bloodwork to rule out the scary stuff that many parents of kids with Down Syndrome fear... leukemia. As soon as the bloodwork results came back, I knew in the pit of my stomach that life was about to change for us. Our general practitioner called me personally to tell me that an oncologist at Akron Children’s Hospital had made time in her day to see us on Monday. We spent the weekend preparing our hearts and hospital bags for a journey into the world of pediatric cancer. Lucie was diagnosed with B-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.”

BUILDING A STRONG SUPPORT NETWORK

Throughout her journey, Lucie was surrounded by an outpouring of love and support from her family, friends, and the tight-knit community of Bolivar. From heartfelt gestures to acts of kindness, their unwavering support became the cornerstone of Lucie’s resilience. Together, they formed a strong support network, offering comfort, encouragement, and hope during the darkest of days.

Additionally, her medical team has been incredibly

strong as well, reflecting the same devotion and love in caring for her as her family, friends, and community have!

“Our medical team has been phenomenal at every turn,” says mom, Maria. “Every single interaction reminds me that they are invested in Lucie’s health and happiness. Not just their medical expertise, but their compassion, has been integral in our ability to conquer each day.”

E MBRACING THE JOURNEY AHEAD, LINKED ARM-INARM WITH LOVED ONES

As Lucie continues her battle with cancer, her spirit remains unbreakable, her resolve unwavering. With each passing day, she exemplifies courage, strength, and the power of resilience. And though her journey may be

Special Needs Mideastern Ohio 29

THE COMMUNITY OF BOLIVAR AND LUCIE’S INCREDIBLE FAMILY HAS SHOWN THE IMPORTANCE AND POWER OF SUPPORTING OUR LOVED ONES.

fraught with challenges, Lucie faces the future with optimism and determination, knowing that she is surrounded by a community that will stand by her side every step of the way.

“Let people love you,” Maria advises other parents who experience their own unique challenges. “Sometimes I think we alienate people to give the impression that we can handle the hard stuff on our own, and while we can, we can fall into the habit of feeling like we have to. We don’t have to. People genuinely want to help, and when you let them, they become invested in your child’s success and happiness. This will inevitably help to build your village. One thing I learned this year is that having a village is what helps a kid get over every hurdle put before them: even cancer.”

DON’T WAIT: REACH OUT TO YOUR COMMUNITY!

The community of Bolivar and Lucie’s incredible family has shown the importance and power of supporting our loved ones. For other special needs families out there, we’ve got some advice for you: don’t hesitate to ask for help! Your community’s involvement is the difference in the success or failure of your child overcoming their battles. Lucie Dillon is just one prime example of the incredible warrior you can become if you lean on your friends, family, and community for help.

Defying Limits

Cori Muntean’s journey to empowerment and advocacy

“Never give up, do what you want to do, and prove everyone wrong.” These words spoken by Cori Muntean’s Poppie (Grandfather) have stayed with her for her entire life. Sadly, Poppie died in 1996 when Cori was 14, but his impact on her life has never dwindled. “What I want to share with everyone is to never give up and keep going!” says Cori.

Born in 1983, Cori was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy at age 2 ½. She has right-sided paralysis which limits her movement on that side.

The CP also affects her speech and

swallowing. Mom Jade says that they had many challenges with trying to communicate and with walking. Jade says, “With the help of her physician, Dr. Cugino ordering medication to dry up her secretions and a lifetime of surgeries and therapies (including having both Achilles tendons cut and stretched at the same time), she is able to walk and talk, nothing will stop her from keeping up with the challenges that we face in everyday life!”

Cori says that it can be difficult for her because people don’t understand that her disability is only physical, her

ability to learn is not impacted. Her speech can make it hard for people to understand her, but she always has support from her family. Jade, who is a business owner, has brought Cori in as a volunteer for many years now. “My mom has always been a business owner and has given me the encouragement and knowledge that I needed to hear,” says Cori. Some of Cori’s frustrations in life have led her and her mother to start ANS Day Services. Cori felt like she didn’t fit in at a lot of Day Service programs because she felt unheard.

34 April 2024

Jade is an RN and Cori always wanted to follow in her footsteps but knew that was impossible for her. She still wanted to do something to help individuals like herself, making things different and more individualized. She wanted to help people with developmental disabilities find their good qualities and focus more attention where it is needed. “Since my mom is a business woman and I was always with her, I created a business plan and we started the process of getting

final approval through the state of Ohio. I can’t be a nurse, but I sure can listen and help others with techniques that have helped me, “says Cori.

In her spare time, this pizza-loving lady loves to listen to country music and spend time with her mom shopping and going to the movies with her dad, Ted. Once a week when her brother has off work they go out to eat and to the arcade Rack It Up. Cori loves shopping on Amazon and she really enjoys going to church with her

parents. She wants everyone to know, “I just wanted to make a difference and to help others with Cerebral Palsy and other developmental disabilities. I want everyone to know that there is always something special about everyone.” She credits her parents, especially her dad for his patience for her positive outlook on life. Her Poppies’ words of wisdom have helped her get through her life and keep motivated. “If it weren’t for him, I would have given up.”

Never give up, do what you want to do, and prove everyone wrong.

Repeat After Me: I’m A Good Mom.

PARENT PERSPECTIVE > SUMMERLY ROWLANDS

There’s too much to do.

“Mom, can you play?”

I don’t have the energy. There’s not enough time in the day.

She needs me to rock her.

He can’t cope if not in my arms.

She’s screaming louder and louder. Will he ever find calm?

My job is to protect. My job is to guide. My job is to listen.

I’M TRYING. I’M TRYING.

Add the sports, Add the school functions, Add it all up.

But don’t forgetMedical appointments, Medical bills, It’s all piling up.

No one cares, There’s no one to help, I feel frozen and stumped.

I doubt my strength, Question my will, What was I put on this earth to do?

Well that’s easy. Yes, it’s hard. But nothing’s ever been clearer.

Feed Clean Work Yawn

But then

Hug Kiss Squeeze Love

I’m a good mom. I’m a good mom.

Repeat after me. Don’t let your head outspeak your heart.

There are days where I question, “Am I ever enough?”

I just look at my kids, I break down, but I am tough.

I will rock her and I will hold him. Her sounds are quieting down. He’s calm and I’m calmer, We read each other and react to one another.

My job is to protect. My job is to guide. My job is to listen. AND I AM. AND I DO.

Add the sports, Add the school functions, My schedule is a zoo.

But I love it, I’m here for it, And I’m here for them, too.

Yes there’s medical appointments, And more bills than I can say, But I do what I must and My advocacy outweighs.

When I feel like no one cares, I think, so what if it’s true?

There’s little hands and little feet That absolutely, surely do.

I may doubt my strength, And I may question my will, But when I ask myself - what was I put on this earth to do?

Well that’s easy. Yes, it’s hard.

But nothing’s ever been clearer.

Feed Clean Work

Yawn

But then

Hug Kiss Squeeze Love

I’m a good mom. I’m a good mom.

Repeat after me. Don’t let your head outspeak your heart.

I’m a good mom. I’m a good mom.

You’re repeating to yourself What they’ve known from the start.

To be completely transparent, there’s always going to be a struggle whether your child is typical or not. I do find myself unsure of my worth and confused some days, but I know just how important my job as a mom is, and I could never imagine myself without this title. When I talk to other parents, when I talk to my partner, when I talk to my family, when I talk to my therapist, the one thing that can bring me to my deepest darkest fears - yet my truest, most astounding accomplishments - it’s my kids. Nothing makes me more emotional, nothing makes me braver, nothing makes me stronger. I will do anything for them at any cost. I will fight. I will advocate. I might cry - we all do. But they are my world and I’m lucky enough to know that I am theirs, too.

My name is Summerly, I’m the mom to toddler Izzy Snow, a 22q warrior, along with my elementary aged boys, Elijah and Kameron. I am always open to talk. Never hesitate to reach out. I’m in this with you.

I do find myself unsure of my worth and confused some days, but I know just how important my job as a mom is, and I could never imagine myself without this title.

UNLEASHING CREATIVITY:

Inside Silo Art Studio’s Vibrant World

a haven for all outsider artists to artistically express themselves to the fullest!

FOR THOSE FAMILIAR with the hustle and bustle of the downtown Canton Arts District, a pillar of creativity and inclusivity is uncovered within Silo Arts & Meadow Studio. Embracing, encouraging, and nurturing adults with artistic aspirations, Silo serves as a haven for all outsider artists driven by an innate passion to create. Here, artistic expression knows no bounds, free from the constraints of traditional schooling or societal norms. Instead, Silo Arts & Meadow Studio provides a supportive environment where artists are empowered to explore their talents and showcase their unique perspectives to the world.

Creativity Is A Way of Life

At Silo Arts & Meadow Studio, fostering the creative spirit is not just a mission—it’s a way of life. With dedicated studio spaces, professional guidance, and access to a myriad of materials, artists are equipped with

the tools they need to unleash their imagination. Professional artists on the team offer personalized instruction, ensuring that each artist receives tailored support to develop their skills and explore new techniques.

“We support our artists by providing them with their own workspace,” says Todd Donnelly from Silo. “They have the physical necessities, such as workspace/desk, storage, and materials needed to create in their own unique methods.”

But beyond the physical act of creating, Silo cultivates a sense of community and camaraderie among its artists, fostering an environment where collaboration flourishes, ideas are shared, and friendships are formed.

“We have two professional artists on our team that work with our artists multiple days a week, one-on-one, to make sure the instruction they are receiving is specific to their art,” continues Todd. “For example, if an

artist is interested in air brushing, we have an artist on our team that can work with that Silo artist to tutor them in that specific new skill.”

An Empowering Platform for Silo Artists

Inclusive in serving individuals within the special needs community, Silo plays a vital role in promoting empowerment and self-expression. Through the transformative power of visual art, artists are given a voice—a means to communicate thoughts, emotions, and experiences that may otherwise go unheard. Silo provides a platform for these artists to share their stories with the world, breaking down barriers and challenging perceptions along the way. By offering studio visits, exhibitions, and professional development opportunities, Silo empowers artists to take ownership of their narratives and celebrate the beauty of their unique perspectives.

42 April 2024

Transforming Challenges Into Triumphs, One Brushstroke at a Time

Yet, amidst the triumphs, Silo also faces its share of challenges. For many artists, self-confidence and communication skills may initially pose barriers to their creative journey. However, through patience, encouragement, and unwavering support, Silo witnesses remarkable transformations as artists blossom and discover newfound confidence in their abilities. By recognizing the potential in every individual and providing a nurturing environment for growth, Silo continues to break down barriers and inspire hope within the special needs community.

“Half of Silo Art’s team is made up of yoga teachers,” said Kat Francis who is Silo’s Visual Arts Director. “This helps make Silo special as we put comfort, peace, and meditation on a pedestal. Our team has the skills and training to encourage relaxation of the mind, how to put mental health first by tuning into your subconscious, and the ability to calm the mind.” Their approach has helped two incredible artists succeed in having a confident voice. The first: is a timid artist who didn’t speak very much at the beginning. Now, she’s confident, proud, and loves to share her self-portraits of strong female characters. Another artist, who is technically nonverbal, is now also able to share his stories, like a comic book full of his own thoughts and feelings. Without Silo Arts & Meadow Studio, we wouldn’t get to witness it!

Support Silo’s Artists

Silo Arts & Meadow Studio stands as a beacon of hope, creativity, and inclusion. By supporting Silo, whether through purchasing artwork, attending exhibitions, or donating materials and funding, you can play a crucial role in empowering individuals with developmental disabilities to thrive as artists and storytellers. Together, let us celebrate the transformative power of art and champion the belief that creativity knows no bounds. Join us in fostering a more inclusive and vibrant artistic community at Silo Arts & Meadow Studio!

Question & Answer Session with Becky Lile

Q. Where do you work currently?

A. Sift Dye Free Bakery! I operate it out of my home as a cottage baker.

Q. What is your job title here?

A. I wear many, really all, hats here. But primarily I am the owner and baker.

Q. How long have you been employed with your current job?

A. I started Sift in 2022 and ran it for most of the year but had to take a step back to focus all my time on my son with autism. I started Sift back up at the beginning of this year.

Q. What do your day-to-day job responsibilities include?

A. I am a one-woman show, so I do it all. I plan out what needs to be baked, buy the ingredients, bake the orders, run my social media, test new recipes, pack up orders and practice my piping techniques.

Q. What is the inspiration behind why you work in this field?

A. My son has autism and was having a lot of aggression issues. After a fellow autism mom mentioned Red 40 and the effects it had on her son, I did some research and found out what food dyes are made of

and how they can affect neurodivergent brains. We cut all food dyes out about a year ago and saw a huge difference in him. Yellow really affects his behavior.

Q. What part of your job are you most passionate about?

A. I am so passionate about being able to provide delicious dye-free sweet treats for everyone, especially my fellow neurodivergent families. Some kids don’t get to have cupcakes or cakes on their birthday, but I get to provide that simple luxury many take for granted.

Q. Do you feel like you’re making a difference in your job and why?

A. I do. There aren’t bakeries doing dye-free treats, but it is so needed in the community. I know the struggle of going to birthday parties and having to keep a close eye on my kids to make sure they don’t eat the cake or cookies that I know have dye in them. Having a dye-free bakery I hope to encourage others to order from me so all their guests can enjoy the desserts.

Q. What is something you would change in your field for the better if you could?

A. If I could get rid of all synthetic dyes I would. They are harmful to so many. I know we all eat with our eyes but so much of our food has added dye for no reason.

52 April 2024
Owner and operator of sift dye free bakery
COMMUNITY IMPACT Q&A > BECKY LILE

Q. What advice would you give to parents in your field to help navigate?

A. Don’t give up. You know what’s best for your kiddos. Look at every label because things you wouldn’t think have dye in them, do.

Q. Where do you see your industry going moving forward?

A. I do see a shift in ‘no added colors’ to so many products and some states are starting to outlaw certain food dyes. I’d love to see everyone band together to outlaw all synthetic dyes.

Q. What has been the biggest factor in your career success?

A. If I will not eat it, I won’t sell it. Quality and tastiness is top of my list and when you taste something from me you know it is made with so much love. I make the vast majority of my fillings from scratch and use whole foods which makes a huge difference in flavor.

Q, What is your favorite non-profit organization or volunteer opportunity?

A. I love Compassion Delivered. I am hoping to be able to volunteer this year in the kitchen and be a small part of the difference that they are making.

We are excited to announce Becky will be coming to future editions of our magazine as a contributor! Be on the lookout for her future articles!

April is Autism Acceptance Month The Road to Acceptance

What is Autism Acceptance?

The Road to Acceptance starts with an understanding that everyone’s unique experiences are valid. The Autism Society of Greater Akron (ASGA) celebrates differences everyday through the wide variety of services and programs we offer our five counties: Medina, Portage, Stark, Summit, and Wayne. In 2008, the United Nations declared April 2nd as World Autism Day. In 2021, the Autism Society advocated for April to be federally designated as Autism Acceptance Day. ASGA and our sister Ohio affiliates worked with our Governor and State legislature to do the same in Ohio.

Let’s highlight together the power of #CelebratingDifferences in our daily interactions with individuals with Autism, including ensuring appropriate support, services, employment, housing, and resources that meet the needs of individuals across the Autism Spectrum.

#CelebrateDifferences

This Autism Acceptance Month, you can be the connection to help us fulfill our mission:

• Educate yourself and share resources

• Take action through advocacy

• Attend an Autism Society event

• Host a fundraiser

• Donate, every dollar helps

• Connect by using the hashtag, #CelebrateDif ferences

In 2007, amid the routines of daily life, a group of compassionate individuals recognized a crucial need and took action. Led by Ptl. Julianna Trunko who was given the blessing to move forward by Chief Hunker of the Wakeman Police Department, Cops 4 Kids with Autism was established. This organization is committed to nurturing understanding and bonds between law enforcement officers and children on the autism spectrum. Their goal is to unite the puzzle pieces, one child at a time.

For many children with autism, encounters with police officers can be overwhelming. Sensory issues may heighten their anxiety, leading to fear and misunderstanding.

Cops 4 Kids with Autism

Building bridges of understanding

Recognizing this, Cops 4 Kids with Autism set out to bridge the gap, showing these children that officers are not to be feared but are here to help.

Cops 4 Kids with Autism collaborates closely with the Wakeman Police Department in Huron County. Through various events and initiatives, they create opportunities for officers and children to interact in a positive and supportive environment. These interactions serve to build trust and understanding on both sides.

However, organizing these events requires resources, and in their early years, Cops 4 Kids with Autism faced financial challenges. Last year they encountered a setback when someone broke into their storage unit, necessitating

56 April 2024
NONPROFIT SPOTLIGHT > COPS 4 KIDS WITH AUTISM

$4,000 in replacements just three weeks before Christmas. Undeterred, the organization turned adversity into opportunity by launching a fleet of food trucks called the Southern Thangs Grub Truck, Twisted Grill and Grind, and Sip and Lick.

Portions of the profits from these food trucks directly support Cops 4 Kids programs, ensuring they can continue their vital work. What started with 56 families has since blossomed to serve 602 families across eight counties in Northeast Ohio.

The impact of Cops 4 Kids with Autism extends beyond just the children they serve. Recognizing the financial strain many families face in providing therapy and essential items for their children, the organization established a “Mom’s Table.” Here, parents can find toys, personal care items, and sensory goods for their families, alleviating some of the financial burden and ensuring that every child has access to the resources they need to thrive.

Moreover, the organization welcomes contributions from the community. Store owners with bulk

items to spare can donate toys, personal care items, or sensory goods to support their cause. By rallying together, the community not only supports the children directly but also provides muchneeded relief to their families.

In a world often marked by division and misunderstanding,

Cops 4 Kids with Autism stands as a pillar of hope, demonstrating the power of empathy and connection to transcend barriers. Through their tireless efforts, they are not only changing lives but also building a more inclusive and compassionate society, one child and one officer at a time.

Triumphing Over Challenges

The inspirational journey of Trevor Hall

In the southern Ohio town of Ironton, resides Trevor Hall, a remarkable individual whose journey embodies resilience, perseverance, and the power of unwavering parental love. Born into a world filled with hurdles due to his special needs, Trevor, now 26 years old, has defied expectations and embraced life with a spirit that radiates joy and determination.

For Trevor’s parents, Angel and Jackie Hall, receiving a diagnosis for Trevor was a challenging task. From autism at the age of 5 to mosaic Down syndrome at 9, celiac disease at 12, and lupus at 18, each diagnosis presented its own set of challenges. In a small town where specialized care can be scarce, finding healthcare professionals who understood Trevor’s needs was an uphill battle. Yet, amidst the obstacles, they found help in the

60 April 2024

support of a compassionate physician and dentist who accommodated Trevor’s requirements with grace and understanding.

Trevor’s early years were marked by struggles with fear and sensory sensitivities, often manifesting in his aversion to new situations, loud noises, and darkness. His tendency to elope added another layer of concern for his parents. However, this changed when at the age of 12, Trevor was paired with Bruiser, a golden retriever Autism Assistance Service Dog from 4 Paws in Xenia, Ohio.

Bruiser was not just a companion; he was a lifeline, opening doors to experiences that once seemed unattainable. With Bruiser by his side, Trevor and his family could attend church, visit movie theaters, and embark on vacations with newfound confidence. Their bond was unbreakable, and even after Bruiser’s passing in 2014, his legacy of love and support continues to shape Trevor’s life.

Contrary to bleak prognoses from previous doctors who doubted his ability to walk, talk, or lead a fulfilling life, Trevor has defied expectations at every turn. Through years of dedicated therapy and community engagement, he has blossomed into a vibrant soul who captivates everyone with his infectious humor and zest for life. Whether charming his way through social gatherings or actively participating in church youth groups and annual Easter dramas, Trevor embodies resilience and optimism in the face of adversity.

Angel and Jackie’s advice to parents navigating similar journeys is simple yet profound: never stop advocating for your child and embrace every opportunity for growth and inclusion. They emphasize the importance of seeking support from fellow parents of special needs children and not succumbing to fear when exploring the world with their child.

Among the many individuals who have played instrumental roles in Trevor’s journey, Monica Robinson stands out. As Trevor’s aide at Open Door School for several years, Monica provided invaluable support, assisting both Trevor and Bruiser with their daily tasks and nurturing Trevor’s growth with unwavering dedication.

Trevor’s story serves as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the transformative power of love and acceptance. In a world of challenges, Trevor’s journey reminds us to embrace each obstacle as an opportunity for growth and to celebrate the extraordinary potential that lies within every individual, regardless of their circumstances.

Reducing Provider’s Anxiety

IN EARLY 2023 , TruCare Provider Services received a service inquiry from an SSA (Service & Support Administrator) from Huron County, Ohio. Their inquiry was about TruCare’s Remote Support Services and how remote monitoring could help a young man named “Ben.” Ben resides with his mom, “Jean” in a small town in Huron County. Ben has been diagnosed with Prader Willi syndrome; a condition caused by a mutation of chromosome 15. A condition that affects 10,000 to 30,000 people worldwide, causes an individual to have an insatiable appetite, potentially leading to dangerous weight gain.

TruCare provider services

For years, Jean, along with staff members from school, and assistance from a daytime provider, has been able to help Ben manage his intake. Ben needs constant monitoring and periodic assistance. Since the completion of high school, Jean has missed lengthy periods of work, had the assistance of a provider during the day, and tried to manage his access to food with door locks and a privately purchased digital camera. Ben was clever and could sneak in and out of the house and into the kitchen through windows and gain access to food. Ben knows that eloping from his home is to his detriment, however, the desire was so insatiable he continued to do so.

TruCare met with Ben, Jean, and his SSA to discuss the situation and to devise a solution. Initially, you could feel the stress in the room and see the anxiety on Jean’s face. This had been an ongoing problem and we were selected to be the solution. During the discussion, it was determined that Ben felt secure in his home and that he becomes very irritated when his ISP (Individual Service Plan) is not followed. As Ben gets older, he has gained an increased desire for autonomy and hopes to live on his own someday. Ben experienced periods of loneliness and was eager to have companionship. TruCare further

explored Ben’s specific needs, while analyzing the layout of Ben’s home. The decision was made that additional digital cameras, door & window sensors were necessary to help Jean provide a safe and controlled environment for Ben. TruCare’s remote monitoring support team was in place to provide remote monitoring as needed by Jean and Ben. In tears, she implied she would get back to her day-to-day life knowing Ben was safe and able to mature into his.

TruCare’s specialization is to locate the appropriate technology that can help an individual in their existing residence, providing the necessary assistance for persons with physical and behavioral disabilities. Our tech support team consulted with Ben’s SSA to acquire the technology for the support he needs.

A new model was created in Ben and Jean’s home. A hybrid model where a care provider during the day, and Remote Monitoring during the night, enables Ben to live more autonomously and gives him the assistance he needs to live a healthy life. Jean, on the other hand, can continue with her career to provide for her family, have time to develop her relationship with her boyfriend, go out with her sister

for the first time in ten years, and know that Ben is not eloping and is not eating to excess. After the innovative technology was installed, instructions were given on how to operate the equipment. Ben was introduced to the monitoring staff and an individual response plan was initiated for day-to-day interaction.

The Remote Monitoring staff will be able to respond in a manner agreed upon by the SSA and Jean, decreasing anxiety for Jean and allowing Ben to live more independently. Ben went on and on about his favorite remote monitoring representative.

Information on social networking was provided to Ben to help meet others in his community and the smooth transition to technology has left Jean grateful knowing her son is safe and independent enabling him to flourish.

MAKING HIS WAY THROUGH LIFE, ONE OBSTACLE AT A TIME

The story of Falcon Graves

Squealing with delight, he shows his joy with his whole body! Falcon is a silly boy who loves to make people laugh with his ornery personality.

In the greater Columbus area, 4-yearold Falcon Graves lives with his family. Born at 26 weeks with a bilateral brain bleed resulting in Spastic Quadriplegic Cerebral Palsy, Falcon requires full assistance for all of his activities of

daily living. He also lost his left leg in utero due to Amniotic Band Syndrome. At his 20-week anatomy exam, he had both legs. According to mom Kera & dad Zach, “his birth and his amputation were a surprise and mystery to us”. Falcon’s brain bleed affected more than just his motor skills, it has also impacted his ability to speak. Falcon can vocalize some sounds and words, but primarily uses an AAC communication device.

68 April 2024

Falcon loves to be with people and to play. Using his Tobii Dynavox I-13 eye gaze device, he shows his personality by building words and phrases on his talker. Much like many other children his age, he loves playing with playdough and sand, being outside, going to the beach, eating ice cream, and making messes covering himself in food and marker. He absolutely loves to learn and color!

Making people laugh brings him joy and he loves to do that by making silly faces and using his talker to say funny, silly phrases. Falcon’s family loves seeing him light up with joy that radiates through his entire body. His whole body extends with excitement and he gives an ornery head dip as well, especially when waving to others.

Many hours have gone into various therapies with Falcon. He wears a Batman prosthetic on his left leg. While he loves to wear the prosthetic and it’s a perfect fit, standing and walking are still quite difficult and very tiring.

Falcon receives physical, occupational, and speech therapies to help him in his daily life. So many specialists have been vital to Falcon’s growth and survival. Starting with his days in the NICU, Falcon has overcome three brain surgeries, countless needle pokes, and many hours of uncomfortable therapies. Despite all this, Falcon has an unbreakable, caring and compassionate spirit. Falcon is always wanting to comfort others and has an amazing bond with his brothers. He is looking forward to the arrival of his new sister and is already so in love with her constantly rubbing his mom’s belly and trying to vocalize to her.

Parenting a child with such significant disabilities is very challenging.

“There are days where we grieve so much of this childhood lost. There are times where he should be running amuck on the playground or walking on his own two legs, but he isn’t. We grieve the loss of independence he will face most likely the rest of his life. Sometimes those thoughts are crushing”, says Kera & Zach. They advise, “take advantage of counseling. Being caretakers, experiencing the trauma that many of our kids face, and just the overall burdens of life… Please don’t be afraid to seek therapy to talk it out. For you, your spouse, other caretakers, and siblings!” They acknowledge that asking for help can be difficult, but doing so can get you the relief you need.

The Graves Family believes that transparency and sharing their story is important. They have experienced stares and people who quickly avert their eyes when they try to make eye contact. They’ve also experienced negative comments, but they try to educate people and answer their questions. “Keep your chin up and be confident in who you are as a parent. Grab your child’s hand, pat their back, and remind them of the beautiful person they are,” Kera and Zach said. Getting involved in their community and finding special needs groups have been great ways to find support.

Falcon and his family have found community and support in their church, which has been very healing as they navigate their journey. Another place they have found support is through “A Kid Again” which provides adventures and fun activities for families who have children with life-threatening illnesses. Falcon and his whole family have been able to delight in their adventures and meet other families going through similar

experiences. They have made wonderful friends through this organization.

“The Miracle League”, a baseball organization for individuals with disabilities, is another place where Falcon has had the opportunity to make friends and meet other kids like him. He absolutely loves it. He rolls around the field in his wheelchair and is learning how to swing the bat to play on his own.

The Graves Family is thankful for and admires all of the families who have gone before them and have fought for acceptance and accommodations. They acknowledge the impact that these families’ advocacy, heart, and passion have had on their own journey. Thanks to the work of those who have come before them and Falcon’s own family and community, we know that Falcon will continue to thrive and grow, bringing more joy and laughter to those he meets!
