T

he Philippines’ health department on August 15 has detected the first case of COVID-19’s Lambda variant in the country and reminded the public to strictly observe minimum public health standards. The country recorded 14,749 new coronavirus cases on Sunday, its second-largest daily increase, bringing the Southeast Asian country’s total confirmed infections to 1.74 million. The Department of Health also reported an additional 270 deaths, the third highest one-day spike in fatalities, increasing the death toll to 30,340.

he Commission on Audit (COA) questions Department of Health (DOH) regarding the 67.32-billion funds intended to fight COVID-19 pandemic. COA’s annual audit report for DOH in 2020 revealed that the questioning of budget mainly for the pandemic purposes is caused by unsupported documents and non-compliance with relevant laws and regulations. “As an example, some of the findings of deficiencies involving COVID-19 funds amounting to P67.3 Billion resulted from the non-

Spokesperson Harry Roque said Duterte is “withholding judgment” until after the DOH submits an explanation on the questionable handling of funds and COA releases its final audit report. Meanwhile, Health Secretary Francisco Duque III, in a statement, said the DOH is currently addressing the deficiencies reported by COA. “The flagged issues are currently being addressed by DOH.
