Legal career: Between 1982 and 2007, Ignatius Muscarella served as a law clerk for three justices of the New York Supreme Court. From 2008 to 2013, he was a guardianship referee, and from January 2014 to his start on the Nassau County 10th District Court in 2015, he was a court attorney referee. In 2008, Muscarella was honored for Professionalism & Community Services by the Court Officers’ Benevolent Association, and in 2004 he received the Merit Performance Award for Community Service and Humanitarian Pursuits by the New York State Court System.

Legal career: Darlene Harris is currently a Nassau County District Court judge, and was elected to the post in 2014. From 1991 to 1994, she served as senior court attorney for the District Court Law Department; from 1995 to 1996, as the Town of Hempstead’s deputy attorney; and from 1996 to 1999 as a Nassau County legislator. In 1997, she opened a private law practice, which she maintained through 2010. From 2010 to 2014, she was chair of the Nassau County Assessment Review Commission.

Legal career: Lisa Cairo began her career in 2003 as an associate at Chris J. Coschignano P.C., handling civil litigation with a focus on matrimonial cases, municipal applications and real estate transactions. In 2006, she became an associate at Jaspan Schlesinger LLP in the firm’s matrimonial practice group. In 2011, she became a partner in the firm’s municipal law, litigation and real estate practice groups. She is also a member of the firm’s management committee.

Legal career: From to 1993 to 1994, Robert Pipia served as a law assistant for the Town of Hempstead attorney’s office. In February 1994, Hempstead Presiding Supervisor Gregory Peterson appointed him as the Hempstead Town Board counsel. He became deputy town attorney in 2000. He was also executive assistant to Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray. In 2014, Pipia was elected Nassau County District Court judge, a position he still holds. He has also served as a member of the State Rehabilitation Council, which was the oversight agency for Vocational and Education Services for Individuals with Disabilities, a division of the New York State Department of Education. And he is a member of the Hofstra Law Alumni Association board of directors.

Legal career: Tricia Ferrel began her legal career in 1998 as an assistant Nassau County district attorney. She served in that role until 2005. She was the Village of Hempstead attorney from 2005 to 2006. She became the Nassau County director of compliance from 2006 to 2008. She was appointed by Nassau County Executive Thomas Suozzi as a Nassau County District Court judge in 2008, and was re-elected to the post in 2009 and 2014.

Legal career: Caryn Fink started her legal career from 1993 to 2000 as an assistant district attorney and senior trial attorney in the Kings County District Attorney’s Office. From 2006 to 2013, she was an assistant district attorney in the Nassau County District Attorney’s Office, Rackets Bureau/Labor Unit. And from 2013 to now, she has been the principal law clerk for the Hon. Helene Gugerty, a New York State Supreme justice.

He would also push the government to provide personal protective equipment to businesses to promote safety and expedite economic recovery, and has developed a six-part tax reform plan to help. He said he would also push for the government’s role in education to be one of support, not control. To address issues with race within the district, Tuman said, he would listen to and act on behalf of com-

munities of color. He said to provide safety and protection for all, officials must work to support and improve relationships between police officers and communities of color through joint community-law enforcement events and training. To improve schools and local infrastructure, he added, they must redirect federal funding to local schools, roads and public transportation. His other major goals include delivering Covid-19 relief to small businesses and residents on Long Island; supporting law enforcement; making Long Island more affordable through his six-part tax reform plan and promoting small business growth; reforming higher education; and investing in and improving local infrastructure.

District takes in a swath of south-central Nassau County, from Hempstead and Westbury to the North to Long Beach to the south, and Valley Stream to the west and Wantagh to the east.

STATE SENATE 9 Todd Kaminsky Incumbent

He said his biggest accomplishment this term was passing the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act, a law that he authored, and that he said is the nation’s strongest stateled effort to address the climate crisis, protect against extreme weather and create new green jobs. He also

helped secure benefits for 9/11 responders and wrote legislation providing funds for Long Island Rail Road infrastructure and capping property taxes. Kaminsky said he supports stronger measures to protect the barrier beach and is looking for ways to strengthen the current legislation. He was a co-sponsor of the bail reform bill, but believes changes in the legislation may be necessary to provide judges with more leverage over cases. He supported the Super Block proj-

ect in Long Beach and favors further economic development in the city. He has fought against state tax increases. Additionally, Kaminsky said he wants to ensure that next year’s state budget contains funds to support adult homes in Nassau County. Kaminsky has been an advocate for pension reform, working to strengthen antibribery laws and working to increase oversight of local government contracts. He has been an advocate for LIRR commuters and a supporter of Industrial Development Agencies, which foster economic development on Long Island. The IDA recently backed the Super Block in Long Beach.

Victoria Johnson Challenger

She said she believes judges should have more jurisdiction over sentencing, and over who should and should not be eligible for bail. Johnson acknowledged

that support for police and opposition to the bail reform law are the main thrusts of her campaign. She also said she believes more environmental support is needed for Long Beach’s North Park section and raised questions about the impact that the Super Block project might have on the local infrastructure, including sewer and water. Johnson was the daughter of a retired NYPD patrol officer and developed a deep sense of the importance of law enforcement,

she said. She decided early in life that the best place to raise her two children was Long Island. Over the years, she has maintained a steady career as chief of staff to Republican legislators on Long Island. She focused on constituent outreach and support in her state legislative district. Johnson said her opponent is focused on the needs of New York City progressive politicians, who do not have the interests of Long Islanders at heart. Johnson particularly opposed Kaminsky’s sponsorship of the bail reform bill, which she said allows “dangerous criminals to roam our streets without consequence.” If elected, Johnson said she would work to overturn the legislation.
