DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD
THOMAS A. KENNIFF
Founding
Partner
RAISER & KENNIFF P.C.
Thomas Kenniff is one of the nation’s preeminent criminal defense attorneys. He is a Founding Partner of Raiser & Kenniff, PC., a full-service law firm with offices on Long Island and in Manhattan, specializing in criminal defense, personal injury, and complex litigation.
Last year Thomas, along with partner Steven Raiser, achieved a historic acquittal for Marine veteran Daniel Penny, the Long Island native charged with homicide for defending his fellow New Yorkers from a deranged subway rider with a history of violence. The NY Post editorial board echoed public sentiment in heralding the verdict as “a watershed moment for common sense, and against the soft-on-crime lunacy that plagues this city.”
Thomas recently captured headlines again when he successfully defended an Alabama man charged with murder for defending his home and family against a violent intruder. Thomas appears regularly on 770AM WABC’s Sid & Friends in the Morning, and his legal analysis is often sought by major media outlets.
In 2021, Thomas was the Republican nominee for Manhattan District Attorney. He ran a spirited campaign against thenDemocratic nominee Alvin Bragg, where he warned New Yorkers of the perils of progressive prosecutors and misguided criminal justice reforms.
Prior to founding Raiser & Kenniff, Thomas served as an Assistant District Attorney under the legendary Jeanine Pirro. He is also a retired Major in the Army National Guard’s Judge Advocate General’s (JAG) Corps and a veteran of the Iraq War, where he earned the Army Commendation Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal.
Nicholas Papain, one of the most prominent and successful personal injury trial lawyers in New York, was Sullivan Papain’s managing member from 1999 until 2018. He has been a member of the firm since 1985.
He has been with the firm his entire legal career, first coming aboard as a summer law clerk in 1977 and then joining the firm full-time upon graduating from law school in 1978. He started trying cases in 1980, winning his very first trial for a woman wrongfully imprisoned for 11 days. The jury awarded her $250,000. Since then, he has gone on to win many multi-million dollar verdicts and settlements for clients killed or seriously injured by defective products, fires, unsafe premises and negligently operated vehicles.
Mr. Papain also played a major role in the negotiation of a $700 million settlement for 9/11 World Trade Center rescue and recovery workers, who had brought suit against the City of New York and its contractors for failing to provide proper respiratory equipment, which was claimed to have resulted in various respiratory injuries.

Paralegal RAISER & KENNIFF, P.C.
Harshdeep "Harry" Brar is a litigation paralegal with the law firm of RAISER & KENNIFF, P.C. Prior to his legal career, Harry worked as a political operative in national elections, securing a U.S. Congressional victory for an underdog candidate; he subsequently served in leadership positions at state and local levels. Observing the policyfocused nature of politics and government deepened Harry's resolve to earn his law degree so that he may produce better results for local communities. A fortuitous meeting with RAISER & KENNIFF Founding Partner Steven Raiser led to a shift in careers for Harry, transitioning from government to law.
From 2023-24, Harry served as the Chief Paralegal for The People of the State of New York v. Daniel Penny; he was entrusted with comprehensive discovery review, motion practice, witness selection and preparation, examination drafting, case law application, case theorycrafting, and client management. The time Harry spent working with Danny further fortified his belief in fluently understanding the legal system in order to effect change that benefits local communities and beyond. Due to the excellent trial work of Steven Raiser and his partner, Thomas Kenniff, and due to the contributions of Harry and his colleague, Khiabeth Burgos, Danny was acquitted by a jury of his peers in a case that captured the nation, creating a watershed moment for America's view on Good Samaritans and justification.
Harry has since been intimately involved in a variety of cases, including criminal defense, complex civil litigation and Title IX defense. In his spare time, he enjoys reading the Western canon (he's currently enjoying Homer'sOdyssey), watching films (Stanley Kubrick is his favorite director) and MMA, and spending time with friends and family. Harry has a neverending list of countries he intends to travel to, and he aspires to have visited every state by the end of the decade. He hopes to attend law school in Fall 2025 and looks forward to becoming a larger credit to society.
