Did you Know Oceanside
In 1680, Jeremiah Hobart, minister of St. George’s Church in Hempstead, was gifted 100 acres of land in Oceanside.
In 1903, a trolley line began rolling through Oceanside, with nine stops in the hamlet.
Oceanside claimed Boy Scouts of America’s first Eagle Scout, Arthur Eldred, in 1912 two years after the organization’s founding.
OCEANSIDE
In 1954, the Lincoln Shopping Center opens, featuring a Woolworth’s, Food Fair and National Shoes.
Murray Handwerker turns the Roadside Rest Property into the first Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog restaurant outside of Coney Island in 1959.
In 1938, Oceanside’s first library opened its doors.
In 1952, Temple Avodah is founded.
Joe and Edyth DeBaun founded Camp Wonderland in 1949, which would later become Camp DeBaun. The first St. Anthony’s Feast is held in 1970.
Roadside Rest, a popular food stand, opened on Long Beach Road in 1921.
Bob Baumann and Mickey McConnell founded the Oceanside Little League in 1950.
In 2001, a time capsule buried in 1976 in celebration of America’s bicentennial, is opened by Oceanside students.
