In 1655 hogs were raised on the drier portions of the island, and it was named Hog Island.

Island Park

The long Island lighting Co. constructed unit one of the E.F. Barrett power station in 1956, straddling the border between Oceanside and Island Park.

In 1981, Island Park native Alfonse D’Amato was elected to the United states senate.

In 1910, developers Frank Lawson and William Austin sought to develop Barnum Island into the

“Venice of the United

states,” with canals running throughout. In 1921, the lands of

Barnum and Harbor

islands were renamed Island Park, with the intention of turning it into a resort center.

In the 1940s, Casino Beach, which would later be named Masone Beach, becomes a popular destination for summer vacationers.

Beach bungalow homes in Island Park were converted to winter homes for year-round use in the 1960s.

Bank of america agreed to gift its Island Park branch building to the village government for use as its Village Hall in 2017.

In the 1920s, Island Park’s first school, firehouse and church were established.

A population influx led to the development of Barnum and Harbor islands in the 1950s.

In 1870 the Long Island Rail Road laid its first track through the area in a line that ran from New York City to Long Beach.
