Dear Glen Cove residents and visitors:

Our Living In Glen Cove guide is a celebration of our unique Gold Coast community. More than just a compendium of essential information, it offers a glimpse into the lives of those who embody our city’s spirit.

Nestled along the shores of Long Island, Glen Cove’s past is woven with tales of opulence and adventure.Venture back to 1668, where the land exchanged hands from the Matinecock Native Americans to Rhode Island native Joseph Carpenter, marking the beginnings of what would evolve into a playground for the elite.

Once known as "Muskete Cove," the town underwent a metamorphosis in 1834, embracing a new identity as Glen Cove, a haven for the wealthy seeking respite from city life. The birth of the Gold Coast era saw a landscape of grand estates, each a testament to the prosperity and ambition of their owners.

But Glen Cove's allure extends beyond its estates and storied past. Nature beckons, offering sanctuary on the banks of Long Island Sound.

Welwyn Preserve County Park promises endless discovery, its trails weaving through woodlands, meadows and shoreline where whitetailed deer, red foxes and eastern cottontail rabbits can be found. Garvies Point Museum & Preserve offers a glimpse into the rich tapestry of Native American history. Moreover, Pryibil Beach and Big Ralph Park, among Glen Cove’s “hidden gems,” are wonderful spots to explore.

Glen Cove’s downtown streets are thriving. Its shops, eateries and historic landmarks stand as a testament to the city’s enduring charm and resilience. City officials and residents are proud of its designation in 2022 by Money magazine, ranking it as the 37th best place to live in the United States — the only place in New York to make the list.

Living In Glen Cove is a labor of love brought to you by the Glen Cove Herald, our city's cherished hometown newspaper. In partnership with the Glen Cove Chamber of Commerce, we are proud to serve as the official publication.

We trust that you'll find this edition of Living In Glen Cove both enlightening and engaging. And we invite you to join us in celebrating the spirit of our community through the pages of the Glen Cove Herald, each and every week.

Warm regards,

A letter from the mAyor of Glen Cove mAyor

Glen Cove is a marvelous place to live. A spectacular area with a variety of culture, entertainment, events, beaches, golf and much more located on the North Shore of Long Island. At one time, we were home to the Pratt and Morgan families of the Great Gatsby era.

We are actually a “city” with a small-town feel. Many of our residents have lived here their entire lives — myself included. It’s a community where “everybody knows your name.”There is a camaraderie and kinship among us.

We have our own municipal golf course, which is currently undergoing some renovations. We are a waterfront community boasting beautiful beaches.

Summers are special in Glen Cove. Pryibil Beach and Morgan Memorial Park are popular destinations. At Morgan Park, not only are you offered beach, sand and the sound, but on summer Sunday evenings, the Morgan Park Summer Music Festival hosts weekly concerts for your entertainment.

We are also the home of the Nassau County Welwyn Preserve, the Holocaust Memorial and Educational Center, and Garvies Point Museum. The North Shore Historical Museum is located at the edge of our downtown.

We are also the home of the prestigious Webb Institute.

Our senior citizens have access to an awardwinning senior center, which offers many activities for our older population. It is located close to the Glen Cove Youth Bureau, which holds afterschool programs, summer camps, and fabulous day trips for our younger residents.

We are also the home of Glen Cove Hospital Northwell Health — a stellar facility which continues to grow and provide the latest in medical services. A YMCA is also located here, providing recreation and programs for people of all ages, camps, pre-kindergarten programs, indoor and outdoor pools, and much more.

Glen Cove is home to all different types of people — every race, religion, socio-economic group and ethnic background is represented

here, making this a wonderful place to raise a family. There are many houses of worship from which to choose.

Our community is known for its many restaurants. One can enjoy either casual or fine dining experiences, and just about every type of ethnic fare you may desire. This last year we have opened several new restaurants.

Our Village Square, located at School and Glen streets, is the focal point of town. The Glen Cove Business Improvement District hosts Downtown Sounds on Friday evenings during the summer, and gatherings throughout the year for various events including Halloween and Christmas.

To our list of things to do, we also have the new Garvies Point development. Here you can walk the esplanade, attend the weekly Deep Roots Market between May and October, visit the dog park, or indulge yourself at the Garvies Point Brewery & Restaurant, which boasts fine food as well as their own beer.

All in all, when it comes to choices, there is no better place to live than our beautiful Glen Cove!

Sincerely,

10 www.liherald.com Living In Glen Cove

Inside the heartwarming haven of Rescue Cove

Nestled in the heart of Glen Cove, a beacon of hope shines bright for animals in-need.

Cove Animal Rescue stands as a testament to the power of compassion and dedication in the face of adversity. This not-forprofit, no-kill organization established nearly a decade ago has blossomed into a sanctuary where every wag of a tail and purr of contentment tells a story of love and resilience.

Step through the doors of Cove Animal Rescue, and you're greeted by a symphony of tiny squeals and playful antics. In the back rooms, kittens frolic amid plush pillows and cat toys, while tuxedo cats gracefully paw at their surroundings.

The atmosphere is one of warmth and tranquility, with each cat room adorned with climbing structures and cozy perches, and even a dedicated kitten haven where the little ones can climb and play to their hearts' content.

Diane Connolly, the heart and soul of Cove Animal Rescue,

In a world often fraught with uncertainty and hardship, Cove Animal Rescue stands as a beacon of hope and compassion.

Adrienne Daley/Herald Jane Serpico, a volunteer at Cove Animal Rescue, takes the mission of the animal shelter seriously. She, herself, has adopted three cats.

describes it as a "boutique shelter" — small in size but overflowing with love. For Diane, the mission is clear: to treat, heal and socialize every animal that crosses their threshold, so they may find their "forever” homes.

It's a labor of love that extends beyond mere sheltering — it's about creating a home where animals feel safe, cherished and valued.

The dogs at Cove Animal Rescue are made to feel at home, with a cozy kennel where they can lounge and play. Each dog is walked, spoken to, and pampered as if they were in their own home.

It's this attention to detail that sets Cove apart, transforming the shelter experience into a haven of comfort and companionship.

But behind the scenes lies

a harsh reality — many of the animals arrive at Cove under heartbreaking circumstances. Dogs abandoned and tied to fences. Cats left in containers by the side of the road.

Yet, amid the pain and abandonment, the rescue remains a beacon of hope, offering a second chance at life to those who need it most.

To support their mission, Cove Animal Rescue hosts an annual casino event in the spring or summertime, a fun-filled evening that raises funds to care for its furry residents.

But it's not just about fundraising, Cove also takes proactive steps to address the issue of pet overpopulation by offering spaying and neutering programs to Glen Cove residents, ensuring a brighter future for both animals and their communities.

For those looking to adopt a furry friend, Cove offers a process focused on one simple principle: The bond between animal and human to find the perfect match, where love and companionship can flourish.

In a world often fraught with uncertainty and hardship, Cove Animal Rescue stands as a beacon of hope and compassion. All it takes to change a life is a little bit of kindness.

Glen Cove's Monument Park Pays Tribute to

greatest

GeneraTions

You might not know much — if anything — about Ralph Young, one of the many veterans memorialized in this hidden gem, if it weren’t for monuments found at the Glen Cove First Presbyterian Church.

The monument's unveiling in 2022 represents a step toward inclusion, acknowledging Young's contributions alongside his peers.

Born in 1922,Young was an accomplished student and athlete, known for his prowess in basketball. After graduating from Glen Cove High School, he attended Lincoln University not far from the Pennsylvania-Maryland border before enlisting in the U.S. Army at the start of World War II.

Assigned to the Army Air Corps,Young flew more than 50 missions aboard C-54 cargo planes, delivering crucial supplies across the Japanese Pacific front.

But on April 11, 1945, his plane crashed during a mission over the Himalayas, claiming his life.Young left behind his parents and sister, who cherished his memory with the rest of the Glen Cove community.

His story resonates deeply in the historical context of segregation, as Black soldiers like Young returned home to a society marked by discrimination. The monument's unveiling in 2022 at the North Lane church represents a step toward inclusion, acknowledging Young's contributions alongside his peers.

The relocation of Young's monument from the Glen Cove

Police Department headquarters to Monument Park also symbolizes his transition from obscurity to prominence.

“It’s beautiful, and long overdue,” says Howard Stillwagon, who served in Vietnam between 1968 and 1970 in the First Cavalry Division infantry.“This should have been here a long time ago with all the other honorees in the city,”

Restored and integrated into a larger tribute, the monument serves as a focal point for remembrance and gratitude.

Located near the center of Glen Cove’s downtown, the Monument Park serves as a gathering place for memorial services, especially on Veterans Day and Memorial Day, where the community comes together to remember and honor their local heroes.

It is not only a place of remembrance, but also a green space where visitors can reflect on the contributions and sacrifices of the individuals honored there.

“We have to remember all those who gave us our freedom,” Nassau County Legislator Delia DeRiggi-Whitton says.“We assume this is the way the world is, but it truly is not. We are very blessed to be Americans.”

The dedication of the Ralph Young monument coincided with what would have been the soldier's 100th birthday.

It underscores the Glen Cove community's commitment to preserving his legacy for future generations.

The Young-Simmons post, founded for Black veterans, now serves all veterans, a testament to Young's legacy of unity and service.

“It’s very, very important to have Ralph Young included here in Monument Park with all the other monuments,” says Glen Cove resident William Richardson.“He certainly was worthy of that.”

‘little piece of paradise’

In the serene coastal enclave of Glen Cove lies Pryibil Beach, a hidden gem cherished by locals and visitors alike.

At the heart of this seaside sanctuary is the beach’s “mayor” Jo Ann Russo, who found herself drawn to its tranquil shores since her early childhood.

Pryibil Beach is more than just a place; it's a state of mind, a refuge from the chaos of everyday life.

“I came here as a kid to hang out then head back to queens,” Jo Ann says.“When I was little, my uncle took me to Pryibil and we would go clamming there. I’ve been to Morgan Park, and Crescent Beach, but I like Pryibil the most.”

Jo Ann moved to Glen Cove from Queens in 2014, dubbing the beach her "happy place" and "little piece of paradise." With a mere 10-minute drive from car to sand, Pryibil Beach became her daily retreat, a haven of calm amid life's tumultuous currents.

To Jo Ann, Pryibil Beach is more than just a stretch of sand, it's a sanctuary where she finds solace and camaraderie.

“When I start driving down the road into Pryibil a feeling of tranquility just comes over me,” Jo Ann says.“It just changes my day no matter what’s on the other side of it. Every day just feels like a different day, especially seeing the sunsets.”

Almost every day, she makes a pilgrimage to its shores — whether to bask in the glow of sunset, commune with nature, or simply share stories with fellow beachgoers.

Pryibil Beach has become woven into the fabric of her life, a constant source of joy and connection.

24 www.liherald.com Living In Glen Cove

Each visit brings new experiences and encounters, from spotting majestic eagles soaring overhead to collecting glistening beach glass scattered along the shore.

“I love walking on the pier, and talking to the fishermen,” Jo Ann says.“Certain times a year, they actually catch squid. One time, the water was really rough and it was it windy during high tide, but me and a few other people walked on the pier. (It) felt like we were on a cruise ship.”

Jo Ann’s bond with the beach and its denizens runs deep, with fellow walkers, to the fishermen casting lines from the pier. Even the seagulls affectionately dubbed her "feathered friends" share in the rhythm of her daily routine.

Pryibil Beach pulses with life and energy. Scuba divers explore its depths, while thrillseekers brave icy plunges in an impromptu "ice bath" challenge. Even in the coldest months, swimmers known as the "seal babies" brave the frigid waters, a testament to the enduring allure of Pryibil Beach.

When the sun dips below the horizon, casting a golden hue across the water, Jo Ann's love for Pryibil Beach only deepens. She marvels at the swans gliding gracefully on the pond across the parking lot, their beauty a reflection of the beach's timeless charm. With

each step along the pier, she feels a sense of serenity wash over her.

But Pryibil Beach is more than just a haven for Jo Ann, it's a vibrant community hub where memories are made and shared.

“I meet so many wonderful people there,” she says.“I have what I feel like are my winter crew. There's people that go and we walk all the time.”

Tim Baker/ Herald Jo Ann Russo found herself drawn to the tranquil shore of Pryibil Beach since early childhood when she began collecting seaglass. Pryibil Beach is a ‘little piece of paradise’ in Glen Cove.

Ralph Park:

Where history, community, nature thrive in harmony

Tucked away at the end of Kelley Street, nestled near the old Coles School in Glen Cove, lies a charming three acres of land known as Big Ralph Park.

While it may not boast the sprawling expanses of some of the city's larger parks, Big Ralph holds within its modest boundaries a treasure trove of history, community spirit, and natural beauty.

Named in honor of the esteemed Ralph Mastalio, a decorated war veteran and dedicated volunteer firefighter, Big Ralph stands as a testament to his unwavering commitment to service. Mastalio's valor in both World War I and World War II earned him the Bronze Star and Purple Heart, but it was his tireless dedication — and more than 30 years — to his community as a firefighter that truly left an indelible mark.

The park underwent a transformative renovation more than a decade ago, breathing new life into its storied grounds. The rejuvenation project, spearheaded by the Glen Cove Youth Roksana Amid/Herald Myrrah Cukro and Rani Sestoso pick flowers on a warm April day at Big Ralph Park, a Glen Cove hidden gem named in honor of a hero from two world wars, who later returned home to dedicate his life to saving others.

Bureau, saw the expansion of the community garden — a cherished sanctuary for greenthumbed enthusiasts.

A greenhouse now stands as a beacon of growth and sustainability, while a dignified flagpole proudly waves the colors of the nation Mastalio so bravely served.

Central to Big Ralph's allure is its thriving community garden, a verdant patchwork of perennials that dance in harmony with the changing seasons. Spearheaded in 2009 by the youth bureau’s After 3 program under the 21st Century Grant, the garden has blossomed into a vibrant hub of activity under the leadership of Spiro Tsirkas. The Glen Cove Youth Services and Recreation executive director recounts the garden's humble beginnings and its evolution into a flourishing vegetable haven — a testament to the community's unwavering dedication to nurturing both the land and their bonds with one another.

For first-time visitors like Myrrh Cukro and her family, the park is a revelation — a hidden gem waiting to be discovered. Enthralled by

its quaint charm and palpable sense of community, Cukro expresses a desire to make Big Ralph Park a regular destination.

Her sentiments echo those of countless others who have found solace and joy within the park's welcoming embrace.

“We would definitely come back here again,” Myrrh says.“I think it's great. I wish I could buy a house around here and then we don't have to drive. Just walk here. The park is nice and quaint. We would definitely come back here again.”

One cannot overlook the park's newest addition — an emblematic rock bearing one of the original plaques honoring Mastalio, restored to its rightful place of prominence.

Such gestures serve as poignant reminders of the park's enduring legacy, and the community's steadfast appreciation for its history.

Janessa Sestoso, Mia Sestoso and Rani Sestoso spend quality family time together at Big Ralph Park, named for Ralph Mastalio, a decorated war veteran and dedicated volunteer firefighter.

Confectionery:

A timeless icon

Once you walk in, you are treated as if you are part of their family.

In the heart of Glen Cove’s downtown area stands a true testament to enduring charm and community spirit: Henry’s Confectionary.

For an impressive 95 years, this beloved establishment has been a beacon of nostalgia and comfort, beckoning locals and visitors alike with its classic soda-fountain look and inviting atmosphere.

Originally established in 1929 by the Wolke family, Henry’s has remained a steadfast presence in the community on Glen Street, weathering the tides of change and passing through the hands of dedicated owners.

Joseph Valensisi and Joseph Capobianco took the reins in 2000, continuing the tradition of hospitality that has defined Henry's for generations.

I don’t think you can get an egg cream anywhere else on Long Island,”Valensisi said.“And the seniors who come here are always shar-

ing stories about the history here.”

Step through the doors of Henry's, and you're instantly transported to a bygone era of 1950s-style luncheonettes, complete with cozy booths and a classic counter adorned with stools. But it's not just the retro ambiance that keeps patrons coming back — it's the homemade delights that await within.

Carol Nelson remembered the days when she and her friends would cheer on the Glen Cove High School basketball team and then head out to Henry’s Confectionery during the 1950s. Nelson said that because Henry’s stayed opened a little later than most stores and held an inviting atmosphere, nearly everyone in town would flock there to enjoy sodas, baked treats and music from the old jukebox in the corner.

“We all wanted to hang out there,” Nelson said. “If you look at the photos they have up there now, you’ll see just how crowded it used to be.”

From decadent ice cream to freshly baked muffins and artisanal chocolates, Henry's delights the senses with its delectable offerings, prepared with love and care just like they were back in the day.

But beyond the scrumptious fare and vintage decor lies the true essence of Henry's — its sense of community and family.

"I've seen generations come through the doors,”Valensisi says.

It's a place where grandparents bring their children, who then bring their own children, creating a tapestry of memories and connections woven through the fabric of Henry's history.

And the restaurant's legacy extends beyond its loyal patrons, having been immortalized on screen in popular television shows like "Oh, Canada," "Blue Bloods," and "The Blacklist."

In a world where businesses may come and go, Henry's stands as a beacon of stability and warmth, a place where time seems to stand still, and every visitor is treated like family.

“Once you walk in,” Valensisi says, “you are treated as if you are part of their family. ”

Step into the rich tapestry of history at the North Shore Historical Museum in Glen Cove, where every corner whispers tales of the past waiting to be discovered.

Nestled on Glen Street, this museum stands as a testament to time, housed within a magnificent building that once echoed with the gavel strikes of a courthouse and the solemn footsteps of law enforcement.

Built in 1907, its sturdy walls have witnessed the ebb and flow of a community's journey through the ages.

But this isn't just a repository of artifacts, it's a living, breathing chronicle of Glen Cove's vibrant past. As you wander through its halls, you'll stumble upon remnants of bygone eras — from the remnants of the North Shore’s bar to echoes of Stroppel’s restaurant.

Imagine yourself transported to 1917, amid the chaos of a flu epidemic, where

this very building served as a refuge for the ailing. Or picture the drama of a Hollywood set, as the iconic Alfred Hitchcock movie "North by Northwest" filmed its gripping trial scene within these very walls.

Yet, the museum's allure extends far beyond its storied past. Led by passionate volunteers, it pulsates with energy, offering a plethora of engaging programs and exhibits that beckon curious minds of all ages.

“We do lectures, exhibits, concerts, not just to preserve local history,” says museum executive director Amy Driscoll.“But make it accessible to people in ways that maybe they didn't realize it before. It's our view that when someone feels a connection to local history, it makes them a better community member.”

From captivating lectures to toe-tapping concerts, there's something for everyone to savor. Step into the shoes of a courtroom protagonist in their riveting mock trial program. Or lose yourself in the whimsical exhibits that delve into the quirks of local lore, like the legendary Butch the dog who rode the rails of the Oyster Bay line of Long Island Rail Road during World War II.

But perhaps the true magic lies in the museum's ability to weave connections between

past and present, transforming dusty relics into vibrant stories that resonate with visitors.

It's a place where the past comes alive. Where every artifact holds a treasure trove of memories waiting to be unearthed.

“We have a range of exhibits that can attract young children up to seniors,” says volunteer Eve Lupenko.“This is a place that's not as well-known to people. But once they walk through that door, they’re surprised.”

Amy Driscoll, the director of North Shore Historical Museum, joined Glen Cove city historian David Nieri to conduct research and provide guided tours of the landmark.
