2020 - 2021 GLEN COVE GUIDE Page 15 Glen Cove City School District carries on during the pandemic

By Jennifer Corr

In an effort to stop the spread of Covid-19, many policies were introduced by Gov. Andrew Cuomo that changed the way New Yorkers live their daily lives, such as having children learn from home instead of in a classroom. The lessons were held over video conference platforms such as Zoom.

Although students’ needs are being met in the Glen Cove City School District during the coronavirus pandemic — learning materials, internet access and even breakfast and lunch — one thing is missing — time with friends.

In an effort to connect, students and teachers have been saying “hello” through health-conscious methods like video montages and car parades. In fact, to honor the Glen Cove High School Class of 2020, two car parades were held in their honor, one by community members and the other by the Glen Cove City School District, which Glen Cove city officials visited as well.

“I’ve seen them have to adjust to a very different world in a very short period of time, and I’m so proud of how they’ve made that adjustment and so many of them have really given time to the community to support younger children or the Glen Cove High School Pantry or just putting efforts into the community making masks,” Glen Cove City School District Superintendent Maria Rianna said. “If the future is in their hands, I’m looking forward to it.”

And to prevent students and their family from going hungry, school faculty, students and local community members worked through the pandemic to keep the Glen Cove High School Food Pantry full, by keeping it open for pickup on select days and even making deliveries for families who did not have transportation.

“I’m truly in awe of the people who have really donated and I’m honored to be a part of this district,” Rianna said. It’s incredible.”
