FIVE TOWNS GUIDE The Senior Life in... Five Towns

The Center for Adult Life Enrichment in Hewlett will work to ensure that its senior members are protected when the center does reopen following months of closure because of the coronavirus pandemic, said Executive Director Lee Gerardi. The center is typically open Monday through Friday.

Known as CALE, the center is headquarted in what was once a carriage house on the Hewlett Estate, and it offers a wide array of programs, activities and trips for seniors, whose ages range from their 60s to 90s.

Optimistic about reopening, Gerardi said members are treated like family.

Center officials have found online entertain

ment for members until the green light is given to reopen. Programs include exercise classes, political discussions, educational lectures, concerts, crossword puzzle games, art groups, singing groups and more.

When the center does finally reopen, Gerardi said personal protective equipment will be available for members, the center will be regularly sanitized, and strict social distancing will be adhered to, so the center may have to limit the number of people attending programs.

Gerardi said members have said they are eager to reopen. “We are doing everything in our power to make sure everyone is safe and secure us,” she said.
