The Covid-19 pandemic has caused many businesses to collapse, many people to lose their jobs, and practically everyone’s lives to be upended. Amid it all, libraries have often been over looked. Yet, they have been working diligently to safely satisfy their patrons’ needs.
During the lockdown, the Hewlett-Woodmere Public Library moved to complete virtual services. William Ferro, the director, said, “Our eBook circulation went up over 300 percent and … the library added streaming services … which allowed patrons to view movies from home.”
In Phase One, libraries offered contactless book pick-ups. HewlettWoodmere and the Peninsula Public Library have been able to distribute books to patrons who order online, receiving them by curbside pickup. At press time, the directors were looking closely at the infection num bers to see when they will be able to reopen for in-person services, with precautions.
Carolynn Matulewicz, the PPL director, said, “It’s not looking like anything will be normal for a while, but we are trying to serve our com munity in the safest way possible for them and our staff.”
The Levi Yitzchak Library Center, in Cedarhurst, has continued with its “A Little Curious” program over Zoom. The library is open for lim
ited hours during the day and will resume regular programs when it is safe to do so.
Chanie Wolowik, the Levi Yitzchak director, said the center requires “all patrons to wear masks and to socially distance.” The centers lets patrons select or return books in the building, but the center cannot be used for studying and reading.
