Kevin did a fantastic job marketing our house. His team took lots of pictures and put together a tremendous on-line tour of the property. We had dozens of buyers come and look and in the end we were able to sell above asking price. All in all it was a great experience and we would work with him again.

In a post–World War II America where suburban communities—inspired by Long Island’s very own Levittown—were springing up in the 1950s and making home ownership possible for the masses, the notion of the perfect backyard was born. Alongside swing sets and charcoal grills, few amenities defined this outdoor extension of the dream home like the swimming pool. In the decades that followed, pools evolved in size, shape and sheer magnitude. L.I. Home: Did you ever find it hard to make it to where you are now because you’re female?
Darcizzle: Fishing is an actual sport so anytime you put in the effort to catch a different fish you’ve never caught or a bigger fish than before, it’s always a proud moment and I relish those gifts. My father, who got
continued on page 12 Loving L.I.
By Alexa Anderwkavich ocial media star and pro angler Darcie Arahill — best known as Darcizzle — quit her day job behind a desk a decade ago to pursue her passion for fishing and has been reeling in a huge following ever since. The self-proclaimed leading angler in America started snorkeling and lobstering with her parents at the tender age of 3 and, thanks to her prowess with a rod and reel — and popular videos and photos of her trolling Atlantis — has netted more than 150,000 followers on Instagram and more than 350,000 subscribers on YouTube. Along the way, she fished all over the world — including, of course, off the shores of Long Island, so we caught up with her to learn how the Florida native — whose boyfriend is from Bellport — does what she does, whether or not tackle boxes are still in fashion, and of course, her new favorite Billy Joel song. L.I. Home: We live on an Island, but not all of us fish. How would you convince the landlubbers among us to get out on a boat and cast away? Darcizzle: I think the key is just to go out there and do it. There is no wrong way, so don’t worry if you are not an expert or clueless your first time. I’ll tell you a secret… fishing is not at all about fishing. It’s about the outdoors, spending time in nature, con servation, time with friends and family and creating memories. So whether you can’t cast or don’t catch a fish isn’t the point. And go visit your local tackle shop, just walk right in and say “I don’t know what I’m doing but want to catch a fish, what do I need!”

Darcizzle: When I come to Long Island there is such a great variety. I’ve caught fluke, stripers, all the bluefish, and delicious sea bass as well. New bies can go out on a drift or party boat from Shinnecock and lots of other places.
Darcizzle: It’s easier in some regards, harder in many others. It is easy to get social media “likes” and engagement as a female, but a portion of that attention is not focused on the fishing aspect but simply on me being a female. I get harassed more online and people simply don’t believe that I caught such and such fish. That is why we started the YouTube channel so that people could see me actually fishing and to help quiet the naysayers. I was one of, if not the first, females to post their fishing online, so before that men, in large part, had no reference point, and I think it surprised them that women can actually fish. Now when you look online I’m happy to see thousands and thousands of female anglers. I still to this day get more interest from sponsors outside of fishing than in the fishing niche. I think that’s a shame.

me started fishing, used to do a lot of mangrove snapper fishing with me, and he passed away several years ago. So when I catch a big mangrove I always think of my dad and how proud he would be of me now, sometimes I’ll literally start cry ing. So those are some of my best times. My biggest achievement publicly is just being out there doing it for a decade for other girls and women to see it. They have to “see it to be it” and I’m proud that I’ve been the one many girls have seen to start them on their own journey. L.I. Home: What are your favorite places on Long Island? Darcizzle: I’m not objective on this one as my boyfriend grew up in Bellport Village and I’ve grown to love it there. The town, the people, the dock, the beach and now the new “breach” make it so great! L.I. Home: Do you prefer fishing, clam ming, or crabbing? Darcizzle: Oh absolutely fishing, then crabbing. The surprise of opening the crab pot and seeing what is inside is addicting. L.I. Home: What are the essentials in your tackle box and backpack? Do they still have tackle boxes? Darcizzle: Lots of hooks and leaders mostly! The more you fish, the more you learn that the basics are really what work, Don’t get involved with all that new stuff, use what that salty looking dude with the hands covered in cuts and calluses uses and you’ll be okay. We have mostly tackle trays and bags now. LOL! L.I. Home: Can you explain the importance of covering up with a wet shirt and using sunglasses in intense sunlight? Darcizzle: Sun protection is of the utmost importance as a fisherman. Everyone makes dri-fit “performance” shirts these days that block the sun, we love the ones with hoods even. They make a huge dif ference. Sometimes they are not that fem inine or “cute” so I have a bunch that are like crop top, with long sleeves. We put sunscreen on before we leave the house, and include the hands … very important. The best sunscreen is the kids stuff — the harder to rub in the better so you get that chalky look. Naturally re-apply. For sunglasses, polarized quality shades are a must to prevent eye damage and to see the fish better. I’m sponsored by REVO.

L.I. Home: Are there any surf and turf, clam bars, or crab shacks on Long Island that you like? Darcizzle: My favorite restaurant on the island is Avino’s in Bellport Village. My boyfriend has been friends with the owner for decades and the food and outside apps are the best. It’s my favorite place for Friday happy hour in the summer. I do know also that you can’t go to Montauk without visiting that lobster roll place, I think it’s just called Lunch? It’s awe some. too! L.I. Home: Because we are a Long Island publica tion, we ask this question to everyone: What is your favorite Billy Joel song? Darcizzle: I literally had to ask my boyfriend because I was born in 1989 and not from Long Island! He tells me no real Long Islander does not love “Piano Man”. I did listen. Great song.

Something I probably should have asked after the first one. She said, “You keep showing us homes with ghosts.” I was a bit puzzled, since I didn’t know I was doing that. She then showed me the iPad, with these blue dots floating around on the screen that represented ghosts. She said, “Do you know if the next home has any ghosts?” I said, “Honestly, I really don’t know, but I do know of a place I’m going right after this that has spirits.”
o describe the recent past in the Long Island real estate market as crazy would be as understated as calling oceanfront property on Dune Road a decent location. The meteoric rise in sale prices, the bidding wars, the challenge of limited inventory, the downs and ups of mortgage rates…it’s been a wild ride filled with things we’ve never seen before. Well, at least some of us. As our gathering of local real estate professionals share the craziest questions they’ve ever been asked about real estate, it seems some people have seen and heard it all.

I truly believe there is no crazy question. Every person has different knowledge levels, different needs, etcetera, so it’s really hard for me to pick one. My answer has and always will be that there is no crazy question one can ask.
16 | LI HOME Magazine | SUMMER 2022 Just Ask That?
Real Talk
Elizabeth Markovic Compass Real Estate
There are too many to recall that are not G-rated. I guess the “oddest” would have to be about ghosts. This one lady and her family showed up to the first of four homes that we were seeing that day with a giant iPad. I never saw one that large before. She took one step in the house and said, “No, this is not for us.” I said okay, no problem, we have three more to see. We went to the next one and the same thing happened. We then went to the third home and, wouldn’t you know, I received the same reaction. I asked politely, “Why are you saying no to the homes after just taking one step inside the home?”
When it comes to real estate, no question is too crazy. Or maybe it is.

The craziest question I’ve ever been asked in real estate is if the seller will take $500,000 cash ‘under the table’.
There are several reasons why I would never be a part of that, not to mention I want the sale price to be accurate because I’m proud of the prices I bring to my sellers.
“Can I go ahead and get started with the painting and stuff that needs to get done in this house but not move in and sleep here until we close?”
Which I replied, “Swapping houses works only if both parties agree. It would be best to list your home on the open market and I will find you a buyer. Once the home sells, we will take the monies from the sale and put it towards the purchase of a new home”.
Vincent Bonica Coach Realtors A customer asked if they could swap houses?
The craziest question I get is, “Did anyone ever die in the house? I don’t want to buy a house if anyone has ever passed away here!” The way I see it, if someone died of old age in the house and not in a hospital, that is great!

What has since 1991 been called the “most beautiful McDonald’s in America” was, in 1795, the family farmhouse of Joseph Denton — the son of one of the Town of Hemp stead’s founders Richard Denton. In the 1860s, it was converted into a Georgianstyle mansion with intricate ornamentation adorning its trims and edges that it still has today. It remained a family homestead until about World War I. From then until the 1980s, the Denton House was used as a commer cial property, first as a funeral parlor and then as various restaurants, the last of which being the Charred Oak Manor — which was somewhat passiveaggressively reviewed by the New York Times in 1981 (Our favorite line: “By ordering carefully — that is, not testing the kitchen’s ability to turn out ambitious combinations — one can have a satisfactory and pleasant dining experience here.”).
By Alexa Anderwkavich
In 1985 — the time the McDonald Corporation took an interest in property — the restaurant was closed, the building was vacant and in disrepair, and the world’s biggest burger seller had a simple plan: demolish the two-story house and build a standard, everyday McDonald’s in its place.

The Denton house was home to the son of one of the founders of Hempstead, and was later used as a funeral home and numerous restaurants. Today, it is the world’s most beautiful McDonald’s, having been refurbished and repurpused by the burger chain.
22 | LI HOME Magazine | SUMMER 2022
The first owners, Lawrence and Joan Anderer, said they were taking a big chance franchising a McDonald’s back in the ’90s, but considered the deal a win-win-win: McDonald’s got its restaurant, the community saved a historic landmark, and the Anderer family have made a living for two decades — while giv ing many New Hyde Park kids their first chance at a real job.
“I remember seeing it get built. I loved going there with my kids” said lifelong New Hyde Park resident Renee Guthart. “We would sit in that all-glass room. It was so special.”
“People knock getting a Mcdonald’s job,” he told Patch. ” “But you can go to work with enthusiasm and learn as much as you can.”
There is value in keeping historic buildings fossilized in their original state, as it gives us the closest glimpse into the past; but there is another kind of beauty that stems from repurposing these historical landmarks, one that can best be described by those that ended up frequenting the McDonald’s on a regular basis.
Photos by Tim Baker
But New Hyde Park and Nas sau County preservationists who did not want to see the historical structure torn down stepped in. After petitioning for landmark status for two years, they suc ceeded in 1987, and saved the building.McDonald’s agreed to refur bish the mansion to its former glory — including gingerbreadhouse details— on the outside as long as it was allowed to add a drive-thru, which it was. The company installed standard franchise guts — a kitchen with fryers, shake machines, and griddles to make burgers, hot cakes, and sausage; colorful plastic furniture; and all the trimmings of your standard McDonald’s —which were gift-wrapped with an original double grand staircase that leads to an area that can be rented for parties. And since then, it’s become a neighborhood staple.
“Every Sunday my husband and I and four other couples would go to the McDonald’s after church. We had so much fun,” said 89-year-old Helena Swierkosz, who has lived in New Hyde Park for 45-year years. “We could stay as long as we wanted to. We talked and laughed for hours. It was such a good time in our lives.”

If you don’t want to replace your current door, simply painting or staining your old one while freshening up the hardware can do wonders for its appearance. You can also add glass features, such as crystal or stained glass. This allows an array of colors and patterns to pool into your doorway via natural light, so it can be enjoyed both from inside and outside of the Evenhouse.easier, you can always add some door decor like seasonal wreaths, or top off your door with a tasteful set of house numbers that come in various metals, typefaces and designs to suit your style.

Often overlooked, the mailbox is just as much a part of the house as any other facet of your home. Hand-me-down mailboxes from previous homeowners are not uncommon, but consider making a mailbox your own. Some homeowners design theirs as a replica of the actual house or other quirky, creative touches, but sometimes all that’s needed is to swap it out with something new and more contemporary.

Perennials will regrow each year so you only have to plant them once, then let nature do the decorating.
Lawns are another huge aspect of your outfront flora, especially here on Long Island. Be sure to water your grass in the morning, this way it doesn’t burn when the sun is at its peak but also it will have enough time to absorb, and maintain it by pulling weeds, raking and mowing.

PerfectThe Path

There is nothing more inviting and warm than a light (or lights!) at the front of your home. This is another aspect of the house that you can have fun with.
First, think of where you’d like to place your lights. You might want to light up the pathway as well as your porch or door. If you’re lighting a path, there are numerous solar-powered lights that get staked into the ground. Keep it sleek with metal trimmings or floor lights, whimsical with lanterns, or artistic with blown glass.
Light
Next, choose your ambiance with the tone of the light. There are warm (yellow and orange hues), cool (blue hue), and color-changing options. There are different kinds of bulbs as well, with LED (not only an energy-efficient go-to but powerful and longlasting) available in vintage coiled bulbs, modern looks and even solar powered. Some lights can also be controlled via apps, which offer timer and color settings to adjust to your mood with just the tap of a finger. the Way

Better in Balance
And in this case “go big or go home” need not apply — you are already home — so it’s usually best to stick to good things in moderation. If you are to add a “feature piece” in one part of your front yard, make it an element that can be balanced out on the opposite side as well. Remember, you want to make a good impression.
It is in our nature to be attracted to things that are even and balanced. Symmetry can be incredibly alluring, so it is best to do things in twos: If you add a light on one side, for example, do the same to the other. Too much attention on one area can be off-putting.

How To S’moreWewant OUTDOOR EVENINGS have us all Fired Up
Fire pits come in all shapes and sizes, but one thing is certain when you’re lighting it up: it needs a source of carbon to burn. The three choices in today’s firepits are good old-fashioned wood, natural gas like the stuff pumped into your home to run your stove, or propane, which typically comes in those familiar refillable metal tanks.
Once the summer sun goes down, it’s hard to find a better way to relax than by gathering with family and friends around a backyard fire. Roasting s’mores, sipping a glass of wine, swapping stories as the flames dance and the smoke swirls, it’s a rite of the season here on Long Island. As with anything worth doing, the backyard fire experience is worth doing right. The questions may seem endless: A fire pit or a fireplace? Gas or wood? Built-in or portable? Old-school or modern? And the answers for how to choose the right option, as we learn from Brian Puma and Matthew Lawrence of Taylor’s Hearth and Leisure in Franklin Square, are as boundless as your imagination these days. A fire pit is more conducive to gatherings in that “cooking-hot-dogsaround-a-campfire” sort of way. As such, they are built to be more interactive, allowing for the production of s’mores, for instance, and allowing for seating around it. “A lot of people are still staying home, utilizing the backyard more, doing more outdoor living,” Puma notes, “so firepits have become very popular.”

This really is a question of how you want to set up your seating. Outdoor fireplaces are generally for people looking to sit in front of a fire instead of around it. They tend to be more of a statement in your yard, and while they may be more expensive to
install (as they include such elements as a chimney), they can still take up less space than a firepit, as they are usually built up against a wall, as opposed to being centered on a patio as a firepit would.

Some even include hidden storage features for an external propane tank.” For that old-school sensation, nothing is as rustic and comforting as the crackling sounds and smoky scent wafting from a woodburning fire pit. “The gas firepits are convenient — there’s no cleaning, there’s no soot. They’re nice because you’re not smelling like wood for three days after,” Puma says with a laugh. “But the wood-burning ones are great, too — you get the crackling, kids can do the s’mores in them, all of that. So both of them have become very popular, and a great way to spend a night outdoors at home.”
Mellow vs. Musical Fire pits create an ambiance to put your guests in relaxation mode, but new technologies can also get the blood, and the music, pumping. “Some are sound reactive and come with a full sound system with multi-colored LED accent lights,” Lawrence offers. “The flames move to the beat of the Andmusic.”the music isn’t limited to fire pits. The boards, she said, can also light up someone’s day or be a form of selfcare during tough times — when a cheese and meat pick-me-up can be just what the doctor ordered. “When I send boards to people that are going through things, they said it made their day much more special,” she said. “To just sit and relax in front of the TV with their friends with a glass of wine and the board.”
Corrina's Perfect Cheese Board: Brie, triple cream. “There are two types of brie cheese: double and triple cream. Triple cream has more fat and gets really soft and creamy.”

Beginning Boards When she started out, Cafarelli’s boards looked nothing like the Instagram-ready spreads she makes now. Back then, she would grab her ingredients — typically cheese, fruit, meat, nuts, and jam — and make them presentable on a plate.
“We would just sit and hang out,” the lifelong Wantagh resident said. “It was the best thing ever.”
The beauty of this craft is finding your way. There are so many different combinations, ways to cut products, and placements. It’s about trying different techniques and foods and discovering your own style.

The Queen’s Go-To Drink Pairings: Prosecco, an Aperol Spritz, and you can never go wrong with a bottle of red or white!
- Aged Cheddar - “You can never go wrong with Aged Cheddar, it goes with everything salty or sweet!”
“Just putting a board in the middle of a table, or on the beach, picnic blanket, anything, just setting it down and really enjoying your friends and family,” she said. “And making those memories, that’s what it truly means to me. I feel like the cheese and charcuterie bring people together, on happy or sad occasions.”
“I’ve taken inspiration from other charcuterie companies as well,” she said. “Like, ‘Oh wow! I really like the way she cut that orange, little things like that, and make it your own. I’m always growing and learning.”
Since those days in Paris, the 26-year-old has used the boards as a way to not only make some money, but to also gather friends and family together and create memories.
- Goat Cheese - “Some goat cheese on a cracker with jam or candied pecans, I love that!”
- Mimolette - “This cheese has a beautiful orange color. It’s a hard cheese but melts in your mouth, so amazing!”
Even though she loved how her mastering of the charcuterie arts was bringing people together and providing her with an enjoyable and fulfilling way to spend her time, Cafarelli did not anticipate ever selling her own boards, let alone starting her own company. But during the pandemic, when she brought a board to some friends, they told her it was time to get into the business. At first, she thought the idea was crazy. At the time, the St. John’s University graduate with a degree in business management was working as a marketing director for a small cosmetics company on Long Island. Though there is a lot that can go into charcuterie boards, getting started can actually be easier than expected and can make a memorable date night, a night with friends or family. First, gather your ingredients: three to four cheeses, two or more cured meats, blueberries and grapes (or your favorite fruit), nuts, fig jam, or honey. Complete with a baguette or crackers and some wine.
Customers sometimes tell me ‘This board looks so different from last week!’ I love the excitement.”
Next, get any flat surface: the table and some parchment paper, a cutting board — get creative! Begin placing your ingredients, pre-slicing cheeses, cutting shapes, and playing with colors. Changing up the cheese and produce keeps things unique.
Cafarelli keeps the element of surprise alive by trying various cheeses and charcuterie from all over the world and using different products. She wants to ensure that her customers feel taken care of when eating off her boards and this can be done by experimenting with both local and exotic products.
“I never planned to be or could ever imagine where I am or what my business is today,” she said. In December of that same year, the producers of Barrymore’s CBS show reached out and asked if she was interested in being on. On March 15, 2022, she appeared on an episode alongside Eric Stonestreet, in which she taught the two how to make the perfect “rose salami” for a charcuterie board — something the two stars quickly figured out thanks to her expert tutelage. Behind the Boards These days, Cafarelli has her commercial kitchen in Levittown complete with a walkin fridge and a seven-foot stainless steel table where the magic happens. There, she builds the boards, packages them, and sends them off to customers with a list of ingredients and a pairing guide for wine that goes well with the food on the platter. And the food isn’t just slapped down — it’s placed distinctly while keeping in mind which ingredients meld best in your Inmouth.theend, flavors can be muted, loud, tangy, spicy, sweet, and, when combined, becomes a whole new indescribable “I’msensation.putting things near each other that I know will go well together — this cheese with this charcuterie and some honey,” Cafarelli said. “There’s a whole science to it!” She teaches that “science” to the masses first by posting informative videos online, and with in-person classes and workshops where she goes over the basics of prep, pairing and building the Lessonboards.
“I want to spoil my customers,” she said. “I want them to get what they paid for and receive an experience.”
Final Touches that Pack a Visual Punch

No two of Cafarelli’s boards are alike, even when customers order the same ingredients — something she takes pride “Everyin.board is unique and it’s always a fun surprise for my customers,” she said. “I need to keep them on their toes.
“I only used purple grapes for a while, but now I’ve been loving green and decided to switch,” she said.

After looking up charcuterie-themed hashtags and business names and finding nothing, she ordered 10 boxes and launched the week before Father’s Day in 2020 — and, much to her surprise, things took off.
No.1: If you want to get it done in 20 minutes or less, be prepared by washing your fruit, cutting everything, and having your crackers on hand. “Prep is key!” Cafarelli said. Get Your CharcuterieSummerOn
One of Cafarelli’s favorite steps is the final little details, such as the aforementioned salami rose and the simple addition of fresh herbs. “Adding a leaf of basil, mint, or sage next to your charcuterie rose can take things to the next level,” Cafarelli said. “The stem and leaf make it so realistic and cute. I teach it in all my classes. Fresh herbs and edible flowers can really elevate your board.” Never a Boring Board
