Going gold for pediatric cancer Dozens of blocks in Rockville Centre were lit up last weekend with luminarias in recognition of Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month. Sept. 18 to 20, residents lit the lanterns and placed them on curbs to light up the streets. The initiative raised money for the Mary Ruchalski Foundation, with more than 6,000 lanterns sold to support funding for pediatric cancer research.

RaisingVoicesUSA, a Rockville Centre-based advocacy group, held a virtual public meeting Sept. 15 to address voting in the November election. Amid the coronavirus pandemic, there have been many questions about how to cast a ballot this presidential election year. The group brought an expert to the Zoom call —

Michael Pernick, a voting rights attorney for the NAACP Legal Defense Fund — in the interest of easing some of voters’ concerns. “One of the things we’ve learned on our RaisingVoices journey is that we don’t know an awful lot of things,” said Codirector Emma Travers, “but we do know how to ask the right people to tell us what we should be doing.” Another co-director, Cindy

Vaupel, said the group came together four years ago “to provide people with opportunities to engage in their communities and to activate informed civic engagement.” The meeting took place as local elections were being held across the state — including a trustee race in Rockville Centre — that were delayed from earlier this year because of the pandemCONTINUED ON PAGE 3
