Dear Neighbor,

This past Wednesday, September 17th, we had the true privilege of celebrating Long Island’s healthcare champions at RichnerLIVE’s fourth-annual Herald Excellence in Healthcare Awards. More than 300 guests filled the Heritage Club at Bethpage in Farmingdale to applaud over 35 extraordinary individuals and institutions who are making a profound difference in our communities.

From dedicated doctors and nurses, to visionary hospital executives, educators, and caregivers, these honorees represent the very best of Long Island. They are the people who safeguard our health, inspire hope, and uplift lives every single day. At the Herald, it is both our mission and our honor to shine a spotlight on these outstanding leaders and organizations—because they are more than professionals. They are our neighbors, our friends, and our family.

We extend our deepest gratitude to our sponsors, whose partnership allows us to recognize and support Long Island’s healthcare heroes in meaningful ways.

We are also proud to announce that a portion of the evening’s proceeds will benefit the Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities (LEND) Center at Stony Brook University. The LEND Program is a transformative initiative preparing the next generation of leaders—students, professionals, families, and self-advocates—to provide exceptional care, champion inclusion, and advance the lives of individuals with autism spectrum disorder and other developmental disabilities. HEALTHCARE LEGACY

Michael J. Dowling is one of health care’s most influential leaders, widely recognized for his bold voice on issues such as gun violence, immigration, and corporate social responsibility — topics many health system CEOs avoid. As president and CEO of Northwell Health, he leads a $19 billion clinical, academic, and research enterprise with more than 104,000 employees, the largest nonprofit health system in the Northeast.

Northwell cares for more than 3 million people annually across the New York metro area through 28 hospitals, over 1,000 outpatient facilities, and extensive home care, rehabilitation, and hospice programs.

Under Michael’s leadership, Northwell has earned national recognition for innovation and impact. Named a "Titan" on the 2025 TIME100 Health list, he guided Northwell to become the only health system named to TIME's 2025 Most Influential Companies. He has also ranked on Modern Healthcare’s 100 Most Influential People in Healthcare list for 16 consecutive years, earning the top spot in 2022.

An accomplished author and speaker, his works include Leading Through a Pandemic (2020), After the Roof Caved In (2020), and The Aging Revolution (2024).

Born in Limerick, Ireland, Michael’s journey from immigrant roots to nationally recognized leader continues to inspire.

As of Oct. 1, 2025, Michael will transition to CEO Emeritus where he will serve in an advisory capacity.

HEALTHCARE VISIONARIES

John D’Angelo, MD is CEO-elect of Northwell Health, effective Oct. 1, 2025. He currently serves as Executive Vice President and Market President for Northwell’s Central Market, which includes six hospitals and more than 260 ambulatory locations across Nassau and Queens.

A Northwell leader for more than two decades, John directed the system’s operational response to Covid-19 as Operations Chief and later as Chief of Integrated Operations. Previously, as Senior Vice President and Executive Director of Emergency Medicine, he oversaw emergency departments, observation units, and urgent care centers serving 1.5 million patients annually.

An emergency physician for over 25 years, John has led numerous initiatives that advanced care delivery and operational excellence, including Northwell’s sepsis program — recipient of The Joint Commission’s Eisenberg Award — and the launch of Lenox Health Greenwich Village, Manhattan’s first free-standing emergency department. He also co-developed real-time actionable data, enhancing systemwide transparency and analytics, an innovation recognized with Northwell’s highest award in 2019 and foundational to its hospital command centers.

John previously chaired the Northwell Health Physician Partners Board of Governors and is Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at the Zucker School of Medicine. A Long Island native, he earned his medical degree from SUNY Stony Brook and trained at Geisinger Medical Center.

Vedi Robotics is positioned to be a key enabler of this transformation, providing an advanced alternative to human labor that reduces costs, improves operational efficiency and ensures consistent, high-quality care delivery.

Vedi Robotics’ AI-powered patient service robots are designed to perform a range of tasks that are critical to the daily operations of healthcare facilities. INTEGRATIVE HOLISTIC CENTER TEAM Cohen Children's Medical Center, Northwell Health

“We can do more for our family caregivers.” This belief, shared by Kathleen O’Kane, RN, with Cohen Children’s Medical Center executives in 2013, marked the birth of the Holistic Services Program.

Compelling caregiver feedback fueled its rapid growth. By 2017, the program became deeply embedded in the organization's culture with the opening of the Serenity Suite, a dedicated space serving both family caregivers and staff. It further expanded by 2018, robustly offering guided meditation, reiki, reflexology, handson massage, and other modalities to admitted pediatric patients, family members, and CCMC staff five days a week. In 2023, the program was acknowledged by the Beryl Institute, which awarded a grant for research entitled Maintaining Our Family Caregiver Holistic Program While Respecting COVID-19 Guidelines.

Today, the team also shares insights on selfcare, wellbeing, and flourishing at academic events and gatherings across the Long Island and Queens communities and partners withthe Ryan Seacrest Studios to offer programming. An indispensable part of CCMC’s culture, the program celebrated the opening of the Cohen Children’s Integrative Holistic Center in 2024. This center is the first acute care program of its kind throughout Northwell Health.

Under her leadership, the nursing team has achieved deficiency-free state surveys, excellent results on internal QA audits, and consistent praise from families, outside agencies, and regulatory bodies. She has played a vital role in developing systems that improve communication, organization, safety, and efficiency across all shifts, ensuring residents receive the highest standard of care. Beyond measurable outcomes, Danielle has cultivated a culture of teamwork and compassion. She has inspired her team to grow into confident, skilled professionals who not only excel in nursing but also support other departments without hesitation. Through Brightview’s BADGE (Brightview Associate Development Growth and Engagement) program, Danielle has extended her impact by helping develop staff across multiple sister communities.

Danielle’s colleagues often recognize her for her calm and steady presence in emergencies, her strong clinical assessment skills, and her dedication to going above and beyond for residents, families, and staff. For her, Brightview Sayville is not just a workplace but an extended family—one that she is honored to serve and proud to represent as part of the leadership team.

At the heart of Danielle’s drive for excellence are her two children, Alexis (16) and Jace (10). They are the brightest parts of her life and the reason she strives to set an example of compassion, strength, and perseverance both at home and in her career. Everything she does— whether leading a team, mentoring colleagues, or caring for residents—is inspired by her greatest role: being a devoted mother.

Q&A

What/Who inspired you to be on the path you’re on today?

As a Long Island native, I witnessed firsthand the challenges families faced navigating complex healthcare systems and the opportunities technology presents to bridge those gaps. That early exposure shaped my resolve to fuse tech with policy, ultimately launching a nearly two-decade mission to simplify access to care. Today, I'm driven by that same passion to empower communities through thoughtful innovation.

Lead Licensed Clinical Social Worker

HARMONY HEALTHCARE LONG ISLAND

Harmony Healthcare is unquestionably blessed to have a clinical leader of its Behavioral Health team who models excellence, embodies compassion, and demonstrates inspiring leadership to the 11 social workers and four psychiatrists under her supervision.

Vanessa Morillo, a graduate of the Adelphi University School of Social Work, joined Harmony in 2017 and became lead behavioral health clinician in 2022. She is known throughout the organization for being beloved by her patients, as reflected in a patient satisfaction rating that is the highest not only in her department but across Harmony's entire provider group of over 80 health professionals. Her inspirational leadership is reflected in the immense loyalty and adoration of her team; the annual employee engagement survey in 2024 identified Vanessa as the single highest rated leader out of twentythree managers in the organization.

She takes direct responsibility for providing clinical supervision to several of the master's level social workers on her team, and she goes out of her way to personally support and mentor all of the staff in the Behavioral Health department. It is nearly impossible to summarize the full range of transformative impacts that Vanessa has had on the organization and on patient communities in Roosevelt, Elmont, Freeport, Westbury, and Hempstead. Like the psalm, she is like a tree planted by streams of water, yielding its fruit in season, whose leaf does not wither, and who brings prosperity to everyone around her through everything she does.

What/who inspired you to be on the path you are today?

I want to provide transformational education to our students so that they can positively impact the lives of all those they will care for throughout their careers by providing compassionate, quality patient-centered care.

Together, they taught me to believe that I can do anything and become anything.
