Eight local businesses awarded facade program grants

Eight commercial property owners in Amityville Village have been approved for storefront façade improvements projects and are eligible to have the cost offset by a share in the state funding recently given to the village.

Village officials announced last week that part of the $600,000 awarded to Amityville through the New York State Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI) will be used to reimburse property owners.

Under the direction of the Office of Community Renewal, the property owners may be reimbursed for up to 80 percent of completed storefront façade renovation costs for restoration and/or beautification of the Village’s downtown.

Song Lin, the owner and operator of New Triangle Cleaners, at 163 Broadway, one of the awardees, said he was very pleased to have his application approved. Plans call for replacing the existing frontage with new energy efficient materials, replacing the signage, and installing gooseneck lighting. The total cost is estimated at $82,500 and the grant re -

Amity Village setting up smart meters for parking

Residents and non-residents can now pay with cards or quarters

The Village of Amityville will convert its coin-operated parking meters at the LIRR lots to smart meters starting on July 15, enhancing convenience for commuters and visitors.

Payment may be made electronically via the Flowbird app or at kiosks in the LIRR lots (by quarters or credit card.) Flowbird app users may also opt to add time to their meter if they are running late.

Annual resident and non-resident commuter parking permits will continue to be honored. Hourly rates under the new parking system are 50 cents per hour, which according to Village of Amityville Mayor Dennis Siry is in line with several other Long Island municipalities. The old rate, which has been in existence for decades, was 25-cents for three hours

Modernization of the Village’s parking operation is long overdue Siry noted.

“We have not changed the meters in decades, and we are pleased to now offer more convenient methods of payment and greater ease of enforcement for our police department and code enforcement officers,” he said. “Our old meters were limited to 12-hour parking and you needed to feed them with quarters, which was a hassle.”

The Village has begun to notify parking pa-

Suffolk County ‘Healthcare Heroes’ program recognizes inspiring medical professionals

The Suffolk County Legislature recognized the contributions to the healthcare of the County from a diverse and inspiring range of “Healthcare Heroes” with special presentations Tues., June 25 at the legislature’s general meeting in Riverhead.

“Each of my colleagues selected an honoree from their respective legislative districts, and I was pleased to recognize Gerry Connelly, RN, as the “Healthcare Hero” from my own district,” said S.C. Leg. and Presiding Officer Kevin McCaffrey. “In the MICU, Gerry is a positive professional who goes above and beyond for his patients and peers. Each of his fellow praise-worthy honorees are residents of our County who demonstrate the seemingly never-ending and selfless contributions of our frontline health workers.”

This annual initiative was established when, in March of 2021, the legislature approved a resolution sponsored by Legislator Anthony Piccirillo (LD-8) to recognize a healthcare hero from each legislative district every June, which in 2020 was designated as Healthcare Heroes Month to acknowledge these inspiring individuals and organizations. Each year since then, healthcare heroes from each legislative district have been publicly recognized through a legislative pronouncement in June for their efforts in serving the healthcare needs of their community.

Other local Healthcare Heroes were: Jalen Jones, and EMT in Leg. Steven Flotteron’s district; Dr. Tia KnightForbes in Leg. Jason Richberg’s district and Dr. Angelica Hernandez in. Leg. Tom Donnelly’s district.

Young cancer patient honored by Town for ‘Band-Aid Drive’ to help other sick kids

At only four years old, Cassidy McCarthy was diagnosed with stage 4 renal cancer, but what followed her diagnosis is where her story really began.

The West Babylon youngster turned her thoughts away from her own illness and toward helping others who faced similar challenges.

“I would hate getting the needle in me when I was going through chemo, and the nurses had these character bandages that would always make me feel better,” explained Cassidy. “Hello Kitty was my favorite, and when I found out that they didn’t have any more of those bandages, I knew I wanted to help because if I’m feeling that these bandages can make me feel better, then I’m sure a bunch of other kids would feel the same way.”

Over the span of a two months, Cassidy, now 12, collected over 1,000 bandages for the NYU Winthrop Hospital Care Center for Kids, where she underwent 9 months of treatment. “I also donated to my primary doctor’s office and other hospitals as well,” she said.

Cassidy has been in remission for 7 years, but her efforts have continued—and expanded. After pledging to collect 1,000 “kid” bandages every year, Johnson and Johnson heard about her inspiring efforts and the company donated 600 boxes of its Band-Aid brand adhesive bandages featuring Hello Kitty.

Daughter to Daniel McCarthy, a former Copiague Fire Chief, and Jessica Pascuzzi, she has three younger siblings, Russell, Daniel and Elsie. She attends West Babylon Middle School and was recently recognized by the Town of Babylon for her work.

“It was amazing,” she said of being recognized by the town. “I feel like people are recognizing me now

rior elements such as siding, brick pointing, cornices, paint, awnings, lighting, and signage.

“It’s very exciting! The Village is in a resurgence and these projects will give a much-needed facelift to key areas in our downtown,” said Amityville Mayor Dennis M. Siry. “It was hard to narrow down where the funding would go, but our committee and the support team at Vision Long Island made the process as smooth as possible.”

Vision Long Island President Eric Alexander said the DRI grant has afforded Amityville and other villages on Long Island a unique opportunity.

“The program is one of the state’s most impact -

ful and visible programs,” he said.” It is a win-win that supports small business improvement while also sprucing up the downtowns where they are located.”

The Façade program is one of several transformative programs under the $10 million NYS DRI initiative awarded to Amityville by the Department of State in 2023 to enhance and rejuvenate the village downtown. Façade project funding also includes monies set aside for creation of murals and for program administration costs. DRAWING CONCLUSIONS: By Kevin Eastwood

Local lawmakers taking a serious approach to the rise in number of drownings

This week, a toddler was pulled unconscious from a pool in one of our communities. While the child is expected to survive, another child and a young man recently lost their lives in similar incidents.

Our communities are not alone in facing these tragedies. A new CDC study released last month shows that over 4,500 people died from drowning each year from 2020 to 2022—500 more per year compared to 2019.

CDC experts examined drowning deaths as as well as self-reported swimming skills, participation in swimming lessons, and exposure to recreational water in their latest Vital Signs report. The report underscores the importance of increased access to basic swimming and water safety training in saving lives.

"Over 4,500 people died from drowning each year from 2020 to 2022—500 more per year compared to 2019."

Officials in Babylon and Oyster Bay towns, as well as Nassau and Suffolk counties, have recognized this critical issue. They have held informational sessions and press conferences to raise public awareness.

Drowning is the leading cause of death for children aged 1-4 in the United States. For adults, drug and alcohol use further increase the risk of drowning, especially in private home pools.

We commend our public officials for taking the lead on this issue and for their efforts to elevate public awareness. Their work is likely to save lives.

Environmental Police help reunite ducklings with their mother

On June 21, New York State Environmental Police responded to Amityville High School after receiving reports of a hen mallard hatching nine ducklings in the school’s enclosed concrete courtyard. ECO Officer Smith went to the scene determined that there was no natural water, food sources, or shelter for the ducklings who were located in the courtyard. He also learned that school employees had been feeding the birds and leaving water out to keep them alive. Smith carefully captured the ducklings and moved them to a grassy area next to the school

while the mother kept a watchful eye. Before long, the family was reunited. The DEC reminds the public that it is never advisable to feed or handle wildlife. Simple human interactions can cause irreparable damage to wildlife, including permanent rejection of young by their parents. The public is advised to contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator through the DEC website:  www.dec.ny.gov/nature/wildlife-health/rehabilitators .

“She will always be my superhero,” said her mother. “For her, no matter what she was over-coming, she was always looking out for others and has a strength like no other.”

Her mother added that in her daughter’s mind, the Band-Aid collection is all about wanting to bring joy to other youngsters and to reassure them that they’re going to be okay because that’s

how she felt after getting her Band-Aid after each treatment. “She faced it all head-on and has the most humble and compassionate heart,” said her mother. “She’s a believer in God and knows that she is here for a reason.”

Obituary NOtice

Sister Margaret Elizabeth Murphy OP, of Amityville, at 85

Early Saturday morning, the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul, June 29, 2024, Sister Margaret Elizabeth Murphy died. She was 85 years old and had served as an Amityville Dominican sister for 42 years. Prior to entering the Congregation, S. Murphy had been a member of the Sisters of the Holy family of Nazareth and

also of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Bentwood. On February 18, 1939, Dominic and Noreen (Acton) Murphy, along with their son Dominic, welcomed Margaret Elizabeth (Peggy) into their home in Brooklyn, New York. The family was soon completed by the arrival of Peggy’s dear sister Noreen and her brother Jack.

After receiving a dispensation from her vows as a Sister of the Holy Family of Nazareth in 1982, S. Murphy was received as a Candidate on July 3, 1983 by the Sisters of St. Dominic of Amityville. She pronounced her First Vows on January 5, 1985 and her Final Vows on January 3, 1988.

She graduated from St. Angela Hall High School in Brooklyn, and she received a Batchlor of Science Degree in Education from Brentwood College where she majored in Theology and Social Studies. Peggy taught for many years before entering the Congregation.

While living at St. Mary’s Convent on Ten Eyke Street in Brooklyn, Sister Peggy taught at Most Holy Trinity School from 1983 to 1989. In 1989, she moved on to Corpus Christi Convent and School in Mineola where she taught eighth grade and also became the librarian.

“Peggy was known for being an extremely creative teacher and was appreciated by both her students and their parents, said a spokesman for the Dominican Sisters. “She had a great interest in and love for history witch she passed along to her students.”

Very often, Sister Peggy would put on a play for the school. She would first interview each of the students who wished to participate in the play. Then, she would create a play around the ideas that the students suggested. The students felt they had ownership of the plays, and this helped to make each of these plays a huge success.

Sister Murphy retired and moved to Queen

of the Rosary Motherhouse in 2011. She resided in Rosary Hall and two years later found it necessary to move to Carlin Hall.

Her friend Sister Celie Gutmann said, “She was the kindest person I ever met.”

Peggy also volunteered her time with the students in the Opening Word Program where she helped them to improve their English language skills.

S. Murphy was predeceased by her parents, Dominic and Noreen, as well as by her brothers, Dominic and Jack.

The wake and funeral were held Friday, July 5, in St. Albert Chapel in the Motherhouse in Amityville. Visitation was at 9:45 a.m. followed by the Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will follow in St. Dominic Cemetery on the Motherhouse grounds.

Graduate students sought for NYMTC’s September 11 Memorial Scholarship Program

Applications for the New York Metropolitan Transportation Council’s (NYMTC) September 11 Memorial Program are now open until July 22.

The program, created to educate and motivate innovation in transportation and technology, asks students to commit 12 months of time outside the classroom to conduct advanced transportation research and planning projects under the guidance of a mentor from NYMTC or a NYMTC member agency.

The research will challenge students to develop creative solutions to difficult problems, providing a benefit to the NYMTC planning area while enhancing each student’s educational experiences. For this involvement, a graduate student will receive financial support of up to $35,000 over 12 months.

This program is open to full-time graduate-level students at a college/university in New York or New Jersey. International students must have a valid F-1 Visa to participate in this fellowship. Prospective students not yet enrolled in graduate school may apply concurrently with their application to any of these schools. Students from all academic disciplines are encouraged to apply if their studies relate in some way to transportation planning.
