THE TEAM AT ACE NY / NYOWA

The Alliance for Clean Energy New York (ACE NY) and the New York Offshore Wind Alliance's (NYOWA) mission is to promote the use of clean, renewable electricity technologies and energy efficiency in New York, in order to increase energy diversity and security, boost economic development, improve public health, and reduce air pollution.

Q&A

What do you believe is the biggest opportunity for growth in the green economy?

As utility rates continue to rise, there is a great opportunity to show how deploying additional renewable energy sources is key to keeping electricity affordable. States with the most renewable development have seen this decrease, and as we continue transitioning our energy sources in New York, we will see it here as well.

How do you balance innovation, profitability, and environmental responsibility?

The ACE NY board is comprised of developers, members of labor and environmental NGOs.This keeps a balance between environmental responsibility and economic development. ACE NY always advocates for responsibly developed projects, and our environmental NGOs have a chance to weigh in on policy proposals to ensure they are indeed for the greater good.

Melissa Griffiths Parrott has been in the renewable energy field and a climate action advocate since 2015. She is the founder of Students for Climate Action (S4CA) and the former chair of Al Gore's Climate Reality Project’s Long Island Chapter.

She has engaged with over 500+ youth on climate action; although with a base on Long Island, S4CA has chapters in multiple states, including Missouri, Texas and Washington. She has spoken at the Youth Assembly at the United Nations and George Washington University on climate and youth advocacy.

TRANSPORTATION

NEW YORK & ATLANTIC RAILWAY

Marlon Taylor is a seasoned railroader and dynamic leader serving as President of New York & Atlantic Railway (NYA), a subsidiary of Anacostia Rail Holdings (ARH), since 2024. Marion began his career in 1999 with Pacific Harbor Line, also a subsidiary of ARH. Today, he oversees day-to-day operations, strategic planning, and stakeholder relations — including coordination with the Long Island Rail Road, the busiest commuter railroad in North America.

Marion is committed to environmental stewardship and infrastructure improvement, spearheading initiatives to upgrade rail yard facilities and transition to greener locomotive technologies. NYA plays a key role in reducing emissions in the area by taking 120,000 trucks off our roads annually, which also reduces traffic and congestion. He also plays an active role in various industry, environmental and civic organizations. He holds an Executive MBA from California State University and completed the UCLA Executive Program. Taylor lives in Lynbrook with his family.

Q&A

What project or initiative are you most proud of leading that has made a positive environmental impact?

I am most proud of leading the New York & Atlantic Railway — and demonstrating every day that freight rail can be both economically vital and environmentally transformative in the nation’s largest metropolitan area. Our railroad quietly transports the goods New York City and Long Island rely on — food, building materials, waste, recyclables, and energy — all while removing more than 120,000 truck trips from local roads each year. That change alone reduces emissions by approximately 75% per ton-mile, alleviating congestion, improving air quality, and lessening wear on city infrastructure.

Q&A

What project or initiative are you most proud of leading that has made a positive environmental impact?

We are most proud of our community engagement initiatives that have reached thousands of individuals across Long Island, raising awareness about sustainable waste management and environmental impacts and encouraging thoughtful decision-making. By educating our communities on environmental stewardship—such as recycling, composting, and supporting waterway cleanups—we’ve helped build a network of environmentally conscious citizens to create a multiplier effect, where each person’s actions contribute to exponential positive change.

We take pride in using advanced technologies to safely and efficiently convert Long Island’s waste into energy for homes and businesses that establishes sustainable circular economy principles. By managing waste locally at our facilities, we eliminate the need for 160,000 truck trips annually, saving 19 million gallons of fuel and reducing traffic and emissions on our roads and bridges.

We partner with our local communities to provide assured destruction of sensitive and hazardous materials. A few key programs include:

1. RX Takeback Program and Secure Destruction of Illegal Weapons and Contraband – In collaboration with law enforcement, we collect and safely destroy unused medications and other dangerous items, protecting our children and vulnerable populations, as well as avoiding the need to flush medications that impacts local water quality.

2. Mercury and Rechargeable Battery Bounty Program – We offer gift cards to community members who bring in old mercury-containing items like thermometers and rechargeable batteries, ensuring safe disposal through proper recycling.

As the official waste solutions partner at UBS Arena in Elmont, we worked with the venue’s leadership to turn their vision for the arena’s sustainability into a realty. Thanks to their procurement processes and investment in operations at the facility, we successfully divert over 95% of waste generated at UBS Arena from landfills.

What advice would you give to the next generation of green leaders?

Long Island needs our help. Whether you work to keep our air clean, protect our waterways or combat the solid waste crisis facing our region, we need you to have the vision and conviction to develop solutions that meet the scale of these issues and have real impacts.
