Make a grand entrance Freshen up your space
WBy Joseph Pubillones
e all know first impressions matter. Well, my friends, the same holds true for our homes. Walking into an entrance hall should be a warm and inviting experience, a preamble to the rest of the home’s decor. However, entrance halls are frequently seen as merely functional spaces and are forgotten or relegated to lackluster design.
In theory, designing the interior should be rather simple because rarely is this space ample enough to contain a lot of furnishings. Most entry halls are small -- not much larger than the hallways they lead to.
If space allows, an entry hall should contain seating — such as a chair or a stool — a mirror and a console or table to hold letters, keys and cellphones.
Ideally, the walls of an entrance hall are painted in one color to create unity. The color should be chosen based on either the predominant color of the house or an accent color within the decorating scheme. For example, the color could be inspired by an accent color found on drapes in an adjoining room or chosen to reinforce the color of the sofa and chairs. This weaving of colors from one room to another creates a visual link and ensures a nice flow from one room to another.
An entry hall endures a lot of wear and tear as people enter and exit a home. So avoid selecting light or pale colors for the walls. Wallpaper is an advisable finish for this area, as long as the paper is thick; paper with a vinyl base is appropriate, too. Selecting wallpaper with a small or overall print will help conceal any scuffs that occur in daily use.
Flooring material for an entry hall should be durable and easy to clean. Keep in mind that outside elements will make their way inside: snow, mud, sand, dust. Most entry halls require an area rug to help soften the impact of foot traffic on the flooring. Here, too, select an area rug with an overall pattern and a multicolor background to avoid

footprints and inevitable marks.
Depending on ceiling height, your room may be able to carry a chandelier or lantern or a close-to-the-ceiling light fixture. However you do it, this room should be well-lit.
The final touches are the decorations and furnishings selected for this space. Tablescapes are important and should provide hints of the style and decor of the rest of the home. Some entry halls are wide enough to accommodate a round table as a centerpiece. This always looks better when topped by a floral arrangement, a piece
of sculpture or stacks and stacks of books. Entry halls that are tighter on space should at the very least feature a console topped by a mirror or significant work of art.
Ultimately, entry halls and hallways are the perfect places to express your personality. Because they are small spaces, you can decorate them over and over again without breaking the bank. And the regular makeovers will keep your home looking fresh.
A hallway’s colors can be based on accent colors within the decorating scheme.

Mastering Design: The 1-2-3 Guide
WBy Joseph Pubillones
henever I tell people I am an interior designer, invariably they say, “I know what I like, but I am completely confused about how to pull it all together,” or, “Oh, one day when I can afford to hire a designer, I will call you.” Creating a room that feels designed isn’t rocket science. It’s actually quite simple. I am going to share with you my “1-2-3” rule for the basic design of any room.
No. 1: Select a beautiful color for the walls. Everyone down deep inside knows what colors they generally prefer . Take inspiration from anywhere and everything. It can come from the color of a favorite shirt, your car or the color of the sky at a particular time. My suggestion is this: Whatever that color is, select a pale, light version of it.
For example, if the color you love is orange, consider using a soft peach or light apricot color for the walls. This will introduce the color palette of your prefer-

Depending what style you choose, a rug can totally change the entire mood of a room, or change up the color scheme, up the cozy factor or even just add new design interest or texture to the space. A rug can even change the feel of your existing floors, giving you a new look for way less than the cost of new flooring. You can layer rugs or use them on carpet, so the options for transformation are truly endless. Try adding a new throw rug by the door to usher in a new season, too.
Area rugs achieve several decor goals at once: adding color, adding texture and defining a space within a room, such as a sitting area or an area for play or sleep. For example, a large area rug placed beneath a bed becomes a sort of frame for the bed, and depending on your choice of color and material, a rug can add warmth to a room or a dramatic pop of color in that neutral room you find so boring.
An area rug can change the look of a room, making it seem as if you’ve just painted, and can elevate the look of your furniture — say, by bringing out the shade of your couch or the soft texture of its suede material.
Best of all, this is one “remodel” that can be done without depleting the wallet.
Remember that just like wall-to-wall rugs are now made with recycled and eco-friendly materials, so, too, are area rugs. So explore your options in rugs made from ultra-soft bamboo and other materials to ensure they are comfy to walk, stand and play on, yet not too plush so as to pose a tripping hazard for your family and guests.
Try them out in-store to be sure they pass the “touch test” and are ideal as a functional element of your room. Get started with these inspired ideas.
Shape. Area rugs aren’t just the traditional rectangular styles you may be used to. Now, you can find square rugs, ovals and circles to create your desired effect.
Graphic patterns. In a simply designed room with little pattern, area rugs add a punch of artistry to the space.
According to the design team at the Home Design Lover blog, trendy patterns for area rugs include oversized geometric shapes, colorful checkerboard patterns, cobblestone, branches and other nature motifs including birds, black-and-white lace for a formal bedroom or bathroom design, oversized stripes that create a nautical theme, and pairing two vibrant shades for a child’s playroom.
The right colors
ence into the room without overwhelming it. Of course, any woodwork or millwork in the room can be painted in another color. My favorite color for millwork is a soft white that is not too stark or bright. As with most things in life, the novelty of painting a room in a color that is too vibrant will wear away, and you’ll be left with the desire to repaint the room.
No. 2: Stick to two main upholstery fabrics. The colors and prints should be complementary. One fabric can be a solid, whereas the other fabric might take on a print, such as a floral, plaid, animal spots or stripes. If you like a simpler and more tailored room, use the solid on the principal upholstery items, such as the sofa or a pair of club chairs.
The other printed fabric can be used on smaller chairs or benches. If you prefer a bolder look, do the opposite; use the printed fabric on the larger main upholstered items, and keep the occasional pieces solid.
No. 3: Bring in up to three other colors/prints/motifs to the room. This is your opportunity to personalize and jazz up the style of a room. Select other colors — e.g., a stronger version of the wall color — that will enhance and underline that original color you loved. These additional colors can be introduced in pillows, rugs and accessories. You also can spike interest in a room by selecting a motif that you repeat over and over in different ways, colors and sizes.
Following this simple “1-2-3” rule should take the mystery out of designing a room. Creating a successful room doesn’t necessarily mean that every item in the room has to match. As a matter of fact, there is something to be learned from slightly mismatched or quirky pairings. This is what gives a room personality. Be confident, and select what you really love. Your room will shine with your personality and style.
Layered rugs. Designer expert Shelly Hill says, “To create a space that’s unique and full of warmth, consider layering two (or even three) area rugs on top of each other. A few popular combinations are: jute or sisal and animal hide, multiple kilim rugs, and flatweave and sheepskin. The key to this trend is to keep the larger bottom rug in a neutral color. By setting a neutral base, you can layer a fun, colorful or patterned rug on top, and it won’t clash or become too overwhelming.”
Hill advises making sure the top rug is at least 12 to 18 inches smaller than the bottom rug so that you can see the contrast between the two.
Message on a rug. Messages are not just for wall hangings. Every morning when you walk into your kitchen to make your coffee, you can see “This day will be beautiful” on the rug at the foot of the sink, or be reminded to “live, laugh, love” on an area rug set before your coffee maker. Kids’ rooms could have customworded rugs, such as “Zoe’s Magic Carpet,” and an area rug in your walk-in closet could feature a sassy phrase like, “You look amazing, darling!”
The effect of a rug. The experts at custom bathroom design company Birdsall Bath say that
