A word of thanks to our volunteer firefighters There is a part of many of us, I believe, that wants, on one level or another, to be a volunteer firefighter.

Most people are good people. Most people want to protect their communities. Most people understand that one of the greatest threats to any community is fire. If a blaze were allowed to rage unconcott trolled, it could consume whole blocks or neighborhoods, as was the case in the 19th century, before the advent of highly organized fire companies.

Most of us want to help. We, however, haven’t the ability to fight fires. Volunteer firefighting requires an inordinate amount of time and a level of commitment that is so rare these days.

To say that our volunteer firefighters are heroes is an understatement. They give selflessly to a higher cause — protecting their neighbors’ homes, businesses and lives. You can only imagine your community without your department, or with a paid fire department, the taxes would be astronomical.

So we can only say thank you to the good men and women who fight our fires and come to the aid of people in all manner of catastrophes, from heroin overdoses to car

wrecks and hurricanes.

Several months in the making, the First on the Scene section is a project that is intended to express our sincere gratitude to Nassau County’s volunteer fire departments. Too often, our fire volunteers go unnoticed within our communities. With this section, we hope to change that. rinton It is, perhaps, little surprise that the ranks of volunteer firefighters have diminished over the past two decades. Many folks are working two and three jobs to make ends meet.

They haven’t the time to volunteer.

Nearly 20 years ago, I photographed a front-page investigative story for the Long Island section of The New York Times that looked at the dire need for more fire volunteers. I visited with firefighters from across the Island. The story was always one and the same: Firefighting ranks were becoming stretched thinner and thinner.

In speaking with a number of fire chiefs and firefighters for this Herald section, the story remains the same now: Our local fire departments desperately need recruits.

Often, people wonder why anyone would take on a responsibility as monumental as volunteer firefighting. I asked that question

of Louis Lanzilotta in 1997 for a Herald story about the Lawrence-Cedarhurst Fire Department. At the time, he was chief of the department, one of the oldest fire companies on the South Shore.

He said the answer was simple: old-fashioned good will. “You see how devastating it is when someone’s house in on fire,” he told me. “It’s a special feeling to know you helped that person.”

Indeed.

Beyond that, it’s important to note that fire companies offer a home to so many.

They are places of camaraderie, of brother and sisterhood, of community. For those

who are firefighters, they often say they could not imagine not volunteering.

By Scott Brinton The Seaford Fire Department lies in the heart of central Nassau County, an area once full of farms and forests. As the community grew from its humble start in the early part of the 20th century, so did the department. Housing developments sprang up amid the post-World War II construction boom, and with a growing number of homes — and residents — the fire department had to respond, becoming larger and better equipped over time.

“The Seaford Fire Department was started and continues to be staffed by eager, willing citizens of the town, many of whom were born and raised in Seaford,” First Assistant Chief Mike Bellissimo said. “A long-standing tradition of neighbors helping neighbors has always been the main goal of the department. The hours of training and commitment have increased over the years, but the reason for responding when your fellow Seaford resident calls for assistance remains the same.”

Firefighters do what they do, he said, out of an old-fashioned sense of neighborliness.

Below are key milestones in the department’s history, taken from its website.

In the beginning The Seaford Fire Department can trace its origins back to 1924. That was the year the department elected its first Board of Fire Commissioners — on July 18. The board decided, as its first act, to bond $20,000 to purchase fire trucks and equipment.

Before coming together as a department, community volunteers would draw water from ponds and streams to fight fires, but with a growing number of homes, there was an increasing need for a more reliable water supply. In August 1924, the department went out to bid on an ambitious project to drill “fire wells” around the community, where firefighters could readily draw from the groundwater supply. The fire wells continued to supply water through the

1950s and ’60s, when water mains — and fire hydrants — were installed throughout the area.

The department’s first fire equipment — purchased by Seaford Hook, Ladder and Engine Company in November 1924 — cost a total of $5,881. The department rented out its first firehouse for $20 a month.

The next year, the department bought a one-ton Standard Ford chassis fire engine, purchased from Jos. F. Hass Motors Inc. for $592.83. Records indicate that Theodore Bedell fitted firefighting equipment from the horsedrawn ladder wagon onto the new chassis.

In time, the department became increasingly professional, despite its volunteer status.

According to department records, in 1937, Seaford Hook Ladder and Engine Company No. 1 revised its bylaws to state, “Any fireman deserving to advance to a Line Officer must have at least two years’ experience as an active fireman.”

Also that year, the Board of Fire Commissioners voted to withdraw $4,000 from the Seaford National Bank to create the Seaford Fire District Special Fund, which was used to install the department’s first fire alarm. A year later, the alarm contract was awarded to the Littlefield Alger Electric Company. Pull boxes located at points around the community allowed residents to signal that a fire had broken out. An alarm would sound at fire headquarters when a box was pulled. That system was later discontinued. Telephones allowed people to phone in fires.

World War II era In 1940, representatives of Mack Trucks met with Seaford fire officials and presented diagrams, photos and specifications of the latest 750-gallon pumpers. Further discussions were held on March 24, 1941, at a special meeting of the Board of Commissioners. It was resolved on April 28, 1941, that the department purchase, at a price not to exceed $10,000, a new Mack fire truck capable

2 of pumping 750 gallons of water per minute. The final price was $8,100. The department received a discount of $904 because an old Dodge pumper was traded in. Today’s fire trucks, by contrast, are capable of pumping 1,500 gallons of water per minute. They cost roughly $550,000, according to Fire Engineering Magazine, while a ladder truck can go for more than $900,000.

In April 1941, the Board of Fire Commissioners ruled that newly elected officers had to graduate from the Nassau County Fire School, a division of the Board of Vocational Education and Extension Board. Ever since, fire officials say, the training demands of volunteer firefighting have increased, as equipment has become more technologically sophisticated.

The department competes in a series of parades and skills drills in the summer. There is a Juniors squad that keeps new blood flowing into the department. Scouting’s Explorer Post 680 is stationed at the department.

And there is a Ladies Auxiliary.

“While not as big as neighboring departments,” Bellissimo said, “the Seaford Fire Department consistently answers the call for help and assistance with a professional, trained and fully staffed response.” n

Modern times According to the U.S. census, Seaford now has a population of roughly 16,000 people, living in about 5,400 homes. Today the Seaford Hook, Ladder and Engine Company No. 1 still

Volunteer firefighters climb ladders that stretch two and three stories into the air, high-pressure hoses at the ready to spray down raging fires that burn hotter than a thousand degrees. Black smoke billows in all directions. At any moment, the home or building might explode or collapse.

Meanwhile, other volunteers rush inside in search of victims who might be trapped. It’s an inferno, with flames raging in all directions. Sight is limited.

The structure groans. Weakened wooden floors might give in. Walls and ceilings might come crashing down.

Yes, volunteer firefighting is very, very dangerous, and the financial reward is, well, non-existent, except for a small pension later in life. Long Island’s firefighters are largely volunteers. They give of their time and of themselves, they say, out of an old-fashioned sense of community and a desire to aid those in need.

Once upon a time, in the early 20th century, firehouses were simple, woodframe structures, with a handful of garage bays to store horse- or humanpowered engines with giant wheels and oversized tanks that, frankly, would run out of water fairly quickly in a big blaze.

As the 20th century progressed, so did the fire trucks, becoming motorized.

As time went on, small trucks became massive engines that required everlarger garage bays.

Fast forward to the 21st century. Today’s firehouses are very large structures — often the largest in their communities.

They’ve also gone high-tech, and rarely is there a single firehouse for an entire community. Often there are two or three, but not in Seaford, which has but one lone fire station.

October is Fire Prevention Month. In conjunction with the national awareness campaign, Seaford Fire Department officials annually open their doors to the community at an open house at 2170 Southard Ave. Firefighters present several demonstrations with controlled blazes, even showing families how the Jaws of Life tool works. The tool is used to extract people trapped in their vehicles. The event also features free giveaways and barbecue safety tips.

Many attendees are children and young adults. They have the chance to learn about the department’s Explorers Program for teens ages 14 through 18. The Explorer program is designed to teach young people about what it takes to become a volunteer firefighter.

Town offers alarm safety tips Editor’s note: The following safety tips were provided by the Town of Hempstead as a public service announcement.

Smoke detectors are considered the most effective fire-warning device, and should be placed on every level of a home. When properly installed, smoke alarms reduce fire-related deaths and injuries. Because smoke rapidly spreads during a house fire, the alarms provide a warning, giving occupants more time to escape from the home.

Be sure to: Install smoke alarms in every sleeping • room and outside each separate sleeping area.

Test your smoke alarms at least once a month and press the button to be sure that the alarm is working.

If the alarm does not respond during testing, replace the batteries or the device immediately.

A smoke alarm should be on the ceiling or high on a wall. Keep smoke alarms away from the kitchen to reduce false alarms.

Follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for placement and mounting height.

Call your local fire department’s non-emergency number to find out what number to call if the CO alarm sounds.

Test CO alarms at least once a month.

Replace them according to manufacturer instructions.

If the audible trouble signal sounds, check for low batteries. If the batteries are low, replace them. If signal still sounds, call the fire department.

If the CO alarm sounds, immediately move to a fresh-air location outdoors or by an open window or door. Make sure everyone inside the home is accounted for.

By Sabrina Garone In the 118-year-history of the Wantagh Fire Department, much has changed in the way volunteer firefighters do their jobs. What has not changed is the reason they do their job—their passion for helping others, members say.

According to department spokesman Kevin Regan, a 30-year member, volunteering is a calling. “The need to serve my community is something I have always felt,” he said. “I have always been interested in helping people.”

Ex-Chief Bruce Sparke, a 42-year member, said the call to help others runs in the family. “My father, brother, grandfather and uncles have all been members of the Wantagh Fire Department,” he said. “My father in particular was a member for over 50 years.”

On Dec. 7, 1899, 21 Wantagh residents decided to form a fire department after an out-of-control blaze destroyed a local lumberyard. They held a meeting at Young’s Hall, on Railroad Avenue and Beech Street, to discuss creation of the department to provide emergency protection to the flourishing Wantagh community.

Wantagh was growing fast at the turn of the century.

Construction of the Long Island Rail Road brought many new arrivals to the area, and with them came stores, hotels and manufacturing centers.

The Wantagh School District was created, as many families began moving in.

The Wantagh Hook and Ladder Company No. 1 formed on Jan. 2, 1900.

By the end of that year, the company had 41 volunteers. Through fundraisers and member dues, the company raised enough money to purchase a fire truck, as well as other supplies, including buckets, an ax, crowbar and roof ladder.

The company’s first firehouse was built in 1901, just south of the railroad.

The two-story “truck house,” as it was referred to, not only housed the newly acquired equipment, but also became the social center of the community.

1 hold the meetings and socials of various local organizations.

A few years later, a fire engine was purchased, capable of pumping 66 gallons per minute (today’s engines can pump 2,500 gallons per minute). The horse-drawn engine, with a handdrawn hose reel, was the only piece of apparatus used before the formation of the Wantagh Fire District.

The Wantagh Fire District was established in 1922. Boundary lines were selected in a meeting with the Seaford and Bellmore districts. The formation of the fire district allowed for tremendous advancements to be made in equipment and training, and provided the financial means that would allow the district to grow and evolve for years to come.

Today, the Wantagh Fire Department is one of the largest in Nassau County. Seven fire stations, 18 pieces of apparatus and more than 225 volunteers protect the 13 square miles that comprise the Wantagh Fire District.

Volunteers dedicate many hours of their time to the fire department in addition to their other responsibilities at work and at home. Volunteers must also train extensively to be prepared for a variety of emergency situations.

“The dedicated men and women of the department continually attend

schools and trainings to improve on their knowledge in handling incidents or in administering first aid,” Sparke said. “They answer fire and rescue alarms and assist other agencies within our town, all on their own time, and for no compensation.”

According to Sparke and Regan, the biggest change they have seen in the fire department is the amount of volunteer interest.

“When I first joined, there used to be a waiting list for people to volunteer their time,” Sparke said. “Now, with the increased cost of living and people having to work multiple jobs, it’s tough for people to devote their time to the department.”

Department members say that despite the long hours dedicated to training and service, the reward is well worth it.

“In addition to being able to help and serve my community, the lifelong friendships and relationships that I have built with the other members has been the most rewarding thing for me,” Regan said. n

Volunteer firefighters climb ladders that stretch two and three stories into the air, high-pressure hoses at the ready to spray down raging fires that burn hotter than a thousand degrees. Black smoke billows in all directions. At any moment, the home or building might explode or collapse.

Meanwhile, other volunteers rush inside in search of victims who might be trapped.

It’s an inferno, with flames raging in all directions. Sight is limited. The structure groans. Weakened wooden floors might give in. Walls and ceilings might come crashing down.

Yes, volunteer firefighting is very, very dangerous, and the financial reward is, well, non-existent, except for a small pension alter in life. Long Island’s firefighters are largely volunteers. They give of their time and of themselves, they say, out of an oldfashioned sense of community and a desire to aid those in need.
