THE 2022

We hosted the Herald’s second Family Business Awards Gala on Oct. 26, presented by PSEG Long Island, where we recognized and honored many of Long Island’s finest family-owned businesses and the legacies they have set forth. The stories of how these founders built their companies, what they stand for, and who works to carry on their mission fills these pages.

As owners and employees of family-owned companies, they are the backbone of Long Island’s economy, but also the blood that pumps the heart of our history. Generations of families have established roots within our communities, and have grown to be household names.

These honorees are not only innovative and exemplary entrepreneurs, but parents, role models and charitable members of our communities who give back to the very neighbors that supported their business endeavors and non-for-profits that have touched their

lives. We will contribute to these efforts by donating a portion of our ticket proceeds to RVC Blue Speaks, a non-for-profit that helps families affected by autism and promoting awareness and acceptance of those impacted by autism spectrum disorder.

Working with family and carrying on a legacy can be so fulfilling and rewarding, especially when you can share these successes as a family.

But with that, it also comes with some challenges. To top that off with the uncertainty and hardships we faced with the pandemic, the unforeseeable future could have held unfavorable endings to our stories.

But each of these honorees have put their best foot forward and found a way to persevere through the many obstacles they have encountered as we all navigate a new world beyond Covid-19.

Thank you to our wonderful event sponsors and to the incredible and dedicated honorees, as well as their family of supporters and friends.

AWARD WINNERS

Daniel J. Shybunko started GSE Dynamics in 1971. After working at Grumman for 25 years, put all his effort into GSE in 1978. GSE became a leader in the manufacturing of complex structural components for the military, including the Army, Navy and Air Force. GSE currently has 82 employees split between our two facilities in Hauppauge, NY. Daniel and his wife had five children and they all share memories of going to GSE on the weekends where they learned about the family business, and of course the conversations around the dinner table often involved learning the “language” of business.

His daughter, Anne D. Shybunko, joined Daniel in 2001, and became the majority owner in 2003. Throughout the years, her siblings and four sons had been part of the team and continued the family tradition of bringing the kids into work to learn and watch the daily activities of a family business. As Daniel’s health started to decline and family matters were being addressed Anne became 100% owner of GSE, though still rooted in the family history and respect for her parents

Defined lines between family and business are critical to the success or lack of success. After Anne’s mom passed from Cancer in 1989, her dad held family meetings where he would provide updates on

business and family matters. This structure created an environment of open dialogue about difficult topics, and opened up conversations so each had a voice that all could hear. Anne cherished every day of working with her Dad for over 20 years, as he filled the role as mentor, business partner, best friend and father.

GSE has always had an active role in non-for-profits and charitable organizations across a spectrum of interests supporting Veterans, Smithtown Historical Society, American Heart Association, Cradle of Aviation; Anne also started Long Island’s Manufacturing trade organization, IgniteLI.org, to promote regional manufacturing and address workforce development needs as a liaison between educators and industry. After Daniel’s passing, the GSE Shybunko Memorial Fund was also created to support entrepreneurship in the manufacturing and engineering fields.

Before starting a family business GSE recommends ensuring there is a strong foundation. If the ability to openly communicate, give and take feedback, trust and respect everyone is there- then build – if there are cracks in the basic integrity of the family foundation, reconsider, because stress and conflict will only test those issues and cause more tension. A successful family business relationship is like no other, and is truly a precious gift.

In 1919, Pasquale Iavarone brought his passion for food and hard work ethic to Brooklyn by opening the first “Salciccia” introducing the finest in old world delicacies. His tempting sausages, coppa and prosciutto gained recognition throughout the city.

Iavarone mastered his unique art of sausage making until he was nationally renowned. During the holidays, the demand was so great for Pasquale Iavarone’s Italian Sausage that police barricades had to be set up outside the store to control the crowds.

In the early seventies, a new generation of Iavarone brothers, Pat and John, opened new stores and continued the legacy, bringing a rather new concept of “prepared foods” and hot catering to food connoisseurs on the run. They also started distributing their own fresh pasta known as Iavarone Bros. Villa di Pasta.

In early 2001, the Iavarone Brothers expanded this location to a full service upscale gourmet market. Iavarones opened a cafe adjacent to the retail store. Iavarone Cafe has received great

For the past 80 years, the name “Iavarone” has become synonymous with quality, value and impeccable taste in food. A proud Long Island native, Michael Lessing was born into a family that is dedicated to hospitality and innovation.

Founded by Maxwell Lessing in 1890, Lessing’s Hospitality Group is comprised of over 100 locations throughout the Northeast and Florida, spanning 21 catering venues, 20 fullservice restaurants, 2-popup kitchens, and 60 food service locations. Continuing the family legacy, Michael heads an organization operated by 15 family members, representing the fourth, fifth, and sixth generations of Lessing’s.

Michael began his career as a steward at the Bethpage Clubhouse and quickly earned a leadership role at the West Sayville Country Club. Nunzi’s is a modern Italian restaurant, named after the owner’s grandfather who passed away three years ago at the age of 76. The idea came to life around four years ago, and opened its doors to the public in September 2021. Their main goal was to bring a Manhattan-esque vibe and scene to Long Island, with an even better dining experience. The business is family owned and operated and they work alongside each other on a daily basis. The Nunzi menu was curated by executive chefs Marc Wisehart and Anthony LoCastro, with inspiration coming from the family’s grandmother’s signature dishes that their grandfather Nunzi loved so dearly.

Throughout the restaurant you will see family photos of him alongside the family, and only wish he were here to see the idea that finally came to fruition.

ROLLING RIVER DAY CAMP

Rolling River Day Camp is a second-generation, family-owned and operated day camp that serves as an extension to a child’s primary education. Directors Rhona and Mark met as camp counselors in 1975 and started Rolling River in 1992. The Goodman Family passed their passion down to their three children Marissa, Alison and Jonathan. Rolling River’s mission is to encourage campers to “embark on life’s voyage” which means that their experience at camp should result in learning a new activity, mastering a skill or building a new relationship. Rolling River accomplishes their mission by creating an intimate atmosphere that fosters self-exploration.

Campers feel comfortable trying new activities with encouragement from genuine and caring staff members. Their unique program is hosted on a 5+ acre, private riverside campus. As one of the top day camps on Long Island, Rolling River provides substantial offerings of age-appropriate activities for campers ages 3-15 including aquatics, athletics, creative arts, boating, special events and trips. Campers receive door-to-door bus transportation, onsite dining and certified health center services.

Campers may select a Classic Program for 4, 6 or 8 weeks or a Flex Program for any 24 or any 29 days. Rolling River is accredited by the 76+ EMPL

American Camp Association and licensed by the Nassau County Board of Health. Rolling River is also open year-round for birthday parties, holiday camps, festivals, reunion events, sports rentals and more.

In 1981 the co-owner Howard Taub’s step-grandfather purchased what was then called Westbury Atlantic. He changed the name to Sunny Atlantic Beach Club and coined the phrase “fun in the sun.” Now the third generation has taken over and continues to offer that “fun in the sun” to the hundreds of loyal members they service. Their family still maintains and operates the club and with the community’s help they have made Sunny Atlantic the place to be in the summer.

Sunny Atlantic Beach Club members come from as far away as New Jersey and Westchester just to spend their summers with friends they’ve made over a lifetime here at the club. About 10 years ago they built an event venue, the Atrium at Sunny Atlantic. Atrium’s vista overlooks the ocean. It’s the only fully retractable, glass roof under the stars. That view — and their commitment to quality — has made it a favorite location for members and guests and a source of pride for the many generations of our family.

AMC TRANSFER INC.

In 1993 established his own company and has grown to establish over 50 years of experience in the office environment industry.

In 2014, Michael Sr. stepped back and let his three children take over: Nicole Diaks became president, Michael Callahan Jr. is the VP of sales and William Callahan took on the role of the director of warehouse operations. The women-owned and family operated establishment, WBE certified in 2016, has 25 employees and continues to help companies create work environments that are both cost effective and productive.

There are many challenges working with family members and it took AMC Transfer over 20 years of working together to get it right. One of the challenges is money, because the first people to lose their check when money is tight are the owners.

It can be tough to tell your siblings they can’t get paid that week.

You also don’t want to step on each other’s toes and ensure that responsibilities are dispersed equally. However, the benefits of working with family for AMC Transfer is knowing they have each other’s backs no matter what. They don’t have the same worries others may have when moving up or the anxieties of someone taking or losing your job. Each employee is loyal to one another no matter what, which is a huge comfort.

AMC Transfer works closely with charities such as Back to School store, St. Jude, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, American Diabetes Association, American Heart Association and the Cancer Research Institute.

OLD GOLD

Good Old Gold is a family owned and operated business established by Helen and John Weingarten in 1980 and online since 1998. Helen and John’s passion for antique jewelry and coins inspired their three children to pursue different niches in the jewelry industry. Jonathan’s knowledge in diamond education, Susan’s enthusiasm for gemstones and Amy’s creative custom jewelry designs together created different avenues for the business to grow and serve their customers. Helen, with the help of her daughters and five grandchildren, is continuing to guide the business with the same philosophy it was founded with and is now expanding with the use of social media. Like any family, they are all very different. However, by being rooted in their faith, they are able to come together and appreciate each other’s differences and find ways to use their gifts to help their customers and the business. Having a location in Massapequa Park for over 40 years has enabled the family to build relationships with their customers that span generations.

brother-in-law Aaron, head of logistics and quality assurance; cousin Debbie Feldman, office manager.

While there are many challenges working with family, in order to overcome these obstacles they have gone to therapy, talked it out in arguments but most importantly at the end of the day they are appreciative to work with family because they know they all care about the business and want it to succeed by continuing its legacy.

When starting a family business the Bell Family recommends making sure you know the ins and outs of the whole operation and always leave the financial decisions up to one person, for the Bells that’s Warren Bell, a.k.a. Dad.

Bell’s Brooklyn Bagels supports nonprofits such as The Met Council, City Harvest and Island Harvest.

Good Old Gold’s advice to those looking to start a family-owned business is to have the family be able to answer yes to the question: “Is it best for the business?” If you always do what’s best for the business you’ll succeed.

Both Robert and Anya began researching species-appropriate foods and taking a candid look inside the industry. They took it upon themselves to visit and research many different brands until they came up with what they considered the premier brands on the market. Once the concept was set, they zeroed in on education as they both agreed that was another aspect missing in the marketplace.

In January 2017 they started operating out of their garage in Bellmore, NY to friends and family. Within 6 months they opened their first store in

Massapequa, NY. To date, the Massapequa store has tripled in size, and they have also opened two other stores located in Bohemia and Lynbrook. All the stores still focus on their core concepts of highquality species-appropriate diets and education.

Each store only sells the very best on the market and the staff at each store is highly trained in the space. Over the years Robert and Anya have committed to giving back to the communities. They are constantly working with shelters, rescues and community organizations to give back to the local communities. What Anya and Robert have created is something truly special in the pet community and is continuing to grow across New York and the United States.

A&C PEST MANAGEMENT

A&C Exterminating was established in 1969 by Neil O’Connor and Walter Skinner. By 1973 Walter became the sole owner and in 1984, Walter’s son, James, started working for his father and took over for his father in 1994 along with James’ wife Mary Anne. James has served as president of many

organizations including the East Meadow Chamber of Commerce, NY Pest Management Association and National Entomology Scent Detection Canine Association. He was the youngest Grand Knight in the Knights of Columbus and has served on the board of Nassau County Boy Scouts, Nassau County Fire Dept Museum, Island Harvest and National Pest Management Association.

In 2009 A&C Exterminating was changed to A&C Pest Management. The company leads the industry with the use of bedbug canine teams and a rodent team. Another green approach that is used within the company is thermal remediation of bedbugs which eliminates them without the use of chemicals.

James always had a passion for pest control, helping people, as well as giving back to the East Meadow community which they both have instilled within their boys, James Paul, Collin and Kevin who, over the past years, have started to take over responsibilities in the company, too.

In 2019, A&C Pest Management celebrated 50 years in the pest control industry by living by one rule: “Just do the right thing.”

James and Mary Anne look forward to the time when they can hand the reins of A&C over to the third generation of the Skinner family.

BEACHFIT TRAINING

BeachFIT Training started in 2012 with a dream of bringing exceptional service, quality and personal attention to every workout. What fi rst started as a hobby, Mike and Christina quickly realized how much they loved helping people get stronger, healthier and more confi dent, and left their full-time careers to pursue their passion in health and fitness.

Mike leads the fitness and coaching side of the business while Christina runs the nutrition programming and operations side. Over the 10 years, they have been able to double in size and

currently lead a team of 10 employees.

Working with your spouse of course has its challenges, but the benefits out-weigh them — building something together, being able to be with your partner more often, and being able to make your own schedule to allow for freedom and fun when you need it. If you are looking to start a family-owned business, our advice would be to ensure that each member has clearly defined roles and responsibilities, and communicates in the same way they would to any other employee when speaking to a relative.

The spirit of Hellenic ancient trade routes lives on in the prominence of herbs and olives in the tapas, cicchetti, mezze and other small plate cultures of contemporary Mediterranean nations. Herb & Olive work with their partners to bring customers artisanal products that are true to the gastronomic traditions of these salt-and-sunkissed lands; in a culinary testament to those traders, philosophers, cooks, scientists, stargazers, adventurers, artists, bakers, bankers and rogues; who set sail from enchanted barren shores, with little more than herbs and olives.

Since about the age of 5, owner Julia Rose Pertropoulos has had a love of cooking that she picked up from watching Julia Child on TV with her grandmother Yiayia Rose. Starting a business and owning her own restaurant was an end goal since she was young. Julia combined her background and education by teaching culinary arts at a high school outside of Philadelphia for five years. Herb and

Olive began to take shape after living in Greece for five years while brainstorming and researching various products while formulating what type of restaurant she would eventually open. When Julia and her husband moved back to New York, they settled in Manhasset, and soon after things began to fall into place at the current location. Herb and Olive Marketa, which opened in October 2019, is a unique market-restaurant venue that features a fullservice specialty Mediterranean restaurant that sources its ingredients directly from the market. Herb & Olive is a neighborhood place where people can come to buy all their Greek products including olives oils, a fresh deli, coffee, jams, pastas, and legumes.

The goal of Herb and Olive is to be able to give back to the community in a way they couldn’t when the covid pandemic prevailed. Herb & Olive took the past years of uncertainty to perfect their craft and mission to welcome Herb and Olive back into your lives.

Today they own three locations on Long Island — Stony brook, Huntington and West Babylon — with 15 employees. My Gym also helps raise funds for the My Gym Foundation – a nonprofit that provides equipment and assistance to help disabled children improve their quality of life.

it’s every customer’s happy place,” says Evan Greenberg. The key to the Greenbergs’ success, they say, is defining roles. Making it clear as to who does what and focusing on the areas of one’s own expertise. This was easy for Evan and Debbie as Evan is a Black Belt, coached Little League Baseball and had a financial background while Debbie had a career in marketing and volunteered as a coach for the Special Olympics. Their daughter Sabrina also helped out in the business throughout the years using her skills in social media and graphic arts. “The fact that we are family and can count on each other, has helped us overcome challenges, especially in recent years,” says Debbie Greenberg.

The benefits of working with family is that there is a different level of trust that comes into play with the family because everyone is in it for the same reason with the same vision and goal. The key is to communicate between all parties, and it’s also good to have an outside source to guide and be an unbiased mediator. Success is in communication.

OTTO’S SEA GRILL

In 1925 Otto and Louis “jumped ship” across sea to begin a new life in New York. By 1927 Otto and Helen moved out to Freeport Long Island to run the dining room concession at the Marks hotel on Woodcleft Avenue. In 1932, Otto & Helen’s family had their only child, Barbara, and Otto expanded the bar and kitchen sides of the building. And next to the bar was a beautiful yard and rose garden which would later become the Clam Bar under the direction of Barbara and Arnim.

The 70s at Ottos were family years. The crew was always like one big family with Barbara or “B” as the matriarch. Otto passed away in 1972 and Helen in 1978, but in the early 80s, Arnim & Barbara joined forces to completely renovate Otto’s inside and out. In 2000, Ilona joined her parents working at Otto’s. Bob’s honesty and concern for the people he served, set a standard for Bill and others to follow at Towers Funeral Home, which he entrusted and sold to Bill in 2009.

Bill’s daughter, Krissie, was a high school teacher. George, Bill’s son-in-law who is married to Karolyn, was well established in his family’s retail flower business. Both George and Krissie chose to embark upon a career change to become funeral directors, and to join Towers Funeral Home. They are both now veteran funeral directors and part of the management of Towers Funeral Home, proudly serving Long Island and maintaining the high standards set by the three

generations of Towers funeral directors.

Frank Criscuolo is a Lieutenant with the FDNY, volunteer with the Oceanside Fire Department and a licensed funeral director. Frank readily makes himself available to the Oceanside community for the families needing emergency services as a fireman or funeral services as a funeral director.

Amy Dagger is the most recent addition to the staff as a funeral director. Her teaching background and family values have greatly enhanced Amy’s ability to guide and families dealing with loss. Amy has earned becoming another “family member” of the Towers Funeral Home family and has proven herself an extremely competent funeral director, exhibiting sincere, passionate and devoted commitment to families she serves.

LA STRADA OF MERRICK

La Strada of Merrick is an Italian restaurant run by husband and wife Eva and Guy Saraniero. Established in 2007, the restaurant now employs 20+ staff, including the original kitchen team that has cooked delicious cuisine for the past 15 years.

After retiring from a twenty-year civil service career, Guy’s passion for pizza-making brought the family into the restaurant business. The hardest challenge of running a family-owned establishment is that you often have to work

during holidays, which can actually lead to time away from family. Luckily, our warm atmosphere and homestyle food often brings family and friends to them.

The dining room of La Strada has played host to many family gatherings. The Saranieros love being an important part of the community and enjoy giving back to local schools and churches. Their advice for running a family-owned business is to treat all employees, whether they’re actually related to you or not, like family. “Everyone working for us feels like part of la famiglia!”
