Makeover eyed for Steveston’s ‘town square’

by Matthew Hoekstra Staff Reporter A traditional Japanese garden feature that makes an interesting sound is proposed for a Steveston pocket park.

Richmond’s parks department is proposing a $250,000 facelift to a small green space adjacent to the Steveston Museum known as Steveston Town Square Park—and a suikinkutsu would

be among the new elements.

A city council committee heard the concept plan for the renovation Tuesday.

The city relocated the Japanese Fishermen’s Benevolent Society Building to the park in 2010. It has since become an extension of the Steveston Museum, and the green space remaining appears destined for a makeover.

One of two RCMP officers convicted of lying to a public inquiry into the tasering death of Polish immigrant Robert Dziekanski has been sentenced to 30 months in jail.

Const. Kwesi Millington had been found guilty of perjury for his testimony to the Braidwood Inquiry into Dziekanski’s death in Vancouver airport in 2007.

Millington fired the stun gun five times and B.C. Supreme Court Justice William Ehrcke decided he later exaggerated the threat a stapler-brandishing Dziekanski posed to officers in the confrontation.

Defence had argued for a one-year conditional sentence, while Crown sought up to three years in jail.

Ehrcke said a sentence near the high end of the range was required because Millington was an officer sworn to uphold the law and tell the truth but instead lied and impeded the inquiry’s pursuit of the truth.

He noted a prison term will be harsh for a police officer.

Perjury carries a maximum prison term of 14 years, but the longest sentence ever handed down for the crime was nine years for Air India bomb-maker Inderjit Singh Reyat in 2011, and no one had received more than six years prior to that.

Dziekanski’s mother told reporters the sentence has finally brought justice for her son.

Millington is appealing the sentence and potentially the conviction, and he can apply for bail pending those appeals.

Former RCMP Cpl. Benjamin (Monty) Robinson is also to be sentenced for perjury in July. Two of the four Mounties who testified at the inquiry and were latest accused of colluding to give false testimony have since been acquitted of perjury.

The suikinkutsu—sourced from Richmond’s sister city in Japan, Wakayama—is expected to be a key feature of the park. The Japanese garden ornament comprises a stone basin and bell-shaped urn.

When water is ladled, a soothing sound of water drops is amplified.

To get the Japanese elements right staff are working with Japanese gardeners from University of B.C. If Richmond council approves, construction would start in the summer and the work could be complete by October.

by Matthew Hoekstra Staff Reporter The number of City of Richmond employees earning $75,000 or more has jumped 43 per cent in five years, according to new financial statements.

Of the city’s 1,998 employees in 2014, 620 earned at least $75,000, while just 433 of 1,846 staffers hit that income mark in 2010.

The figures are detailed in Richmond’s annual statement of financial information, which city council will receive for information at its Monday night meeting.

Salaries totalled $109.2 million last year. Expenses rang in at $521,890.

The city’s top earner is George Duncan. Last year the chief administrative officer earned $296,930, recorded $5,630 in expenses, and cost taxpayers

another $28,999 for benefits and lump sum payments, such as banked vacation and overtime.

Department heads also scored high on the pay scale. Their pay, including salary, taxable benefits and lump sum payments: $295,848 for Joe Erceg, general manager of planning and development; $291,267 for Robert Gonzalez, general manager of engineering and public works; $283,970 for Andrew Nazareth, general manager of finance and corporate services; $251,598 for Phyllis Carlyle, general manager of law and community safety; $242,201 for Cathy Colkering Carlile, general manager of community services; and $239,285 for Dave Semple, general manager of community services.

On city council, the top spender was Mayor Malcolm Brodie, who charged taxpayers $3,494 for expenses last year. Coun. Derek Dang spent the least again this year, claiming just $130 in expenses.

A couple has been arrested in relation to a massive seizure of stolen bank information that netted almost $350,000 in a couple of months.

On April 8, a financial institution called the Surrey RCMP reporting that one of its credit card customer’s accounts had been compromised.

Less than two weeks later, Surrey Mounties executed four search warrants on two properties and a mail box depot. Evidence seized included $20,000 in property, including a $10,000 bicycle, several computers and rare collectors coins.

Also seized were 250 stolen credit cards, along with 450 pieces of mail from Richmond, Surrey and New Westminster.

A loaded shotgun was also found in a bedroom.

Surrey’s Dean Gallo, 32, and Delta’s Hannah Denman, 26, have been charged with theft over $5,000 and possession of credit card data.

Gallo has also been charged with possession of a firearm while prohibited.

Surrey RCMP Cpl. Scotty Schumann said the two are known as prolific offenders on a broad range of crimes.

He has been remanded to custody and Denman has been released pending trial. “The amount of personal data that these two persons possessed was immense,�

Schumann said. “The information the pair had collected was being used to create credit cards for persons whose identities they’ve stolen. The fraudulently obtained cards were then used to buy merchandise which was sold for cash. —Black Press

Clarification

A new community centre, scheduled to open in September, will be named City Centre Community Centre but will be located inside a building called the Carol Tong Centre.

The Carol Tong Centre— named after the late wife of the project developer—will also house the new Trinity Western University campus.

As reported in a June 19 story, Malaysian tycoon Tong Kooi Ong reached an agreement with the city on the name during a rezoning process for Quintet, a multi-tower project that is providing the space for the future public facility.

The River Queen Ferry offers Steveston’s first ever heritage ferry service and boat tour on the Steveston waterfront.

The first boat leaves Fisherman’s Wharf at 10 a.m. and the last trip leaves Britannia’s dock at 4:35 p.m.

mid the pre-election rhetoric, one organization has spoken up that’s truly worth listening to. Our country’s political parties should pay attention.

On Tuesday the Canadian Cancer Society said the current federal approach to health has left serious gaps in cancer care, prevention and research. Urgent reform is needed as Canada experiences a dramatic rise in cancer cases, according to the health charity.

Making an unprecedented move, the society released a federal election platform document it hopes will become part of the political

debate before the fixed election date of Oct. 19.

The document’s name, “Wake-up call: national priorities for patients, families and a healthier future,� spells out the society’s campaign.

It wants health care to become a key issue in the 2015 campaign.

It’s hard to disagree.

Two in five Canadians will develop cancer in their lifetime, and by 2030 the total number of cancer cases will increase by 40 per cent, according to recent research from the cancer society. This has the potential to overwhelm our health care system. Think compromised care, fewer dollars for prevention and research.

mela Fralick acknowledges federal spending on health has gone up, but federal accountability for health solutions has gone down.

Indeed, health care hasn’t been high on the list of Conservative government priorities. The feds transfer health care dollars, leaving the delivery almost entirely in the hands of provincial and territorial leaders.

And when it comes to prevention, it’s often the government with the least clout making the most noise. Take Richmond, for example. This city has been a leader on several health-related fronts. It made progressive moves in banning smoking long before it became fashionable to do so. Our

civic leaders also banned the use of cosmetic pesticides and even took a stand against genetically modified crops some years ago.

The Canadian Cancer Society calls its platform a wake-up call for all party leaders to address issues such as tobacco control, access to palliative care and long-term research investments. Indeed, tackling rising cancer rates deserves a national response.

Nearly one million Canadians are living with it today, and almost all other Canadians have been touched by the disease in some way. Cancer already has our attention. Hopefully it will now command the attention of political debate.

Here on the West Coast, “kayaktivists� paddled around a Shell offshore oil drilling platform being serviced at Seattle, striking poses of resistance for the media from their petroleum-based watercraft.

Meanwhile at Bull Arm outside St. John’s, work continues on a massive “gravity-based structure� that will soon be drilling into the Hebron oil field 350 kilometres offshore.

It will have living quarters and drill rig above and a tank with capacity for 1.2 million barrels of crude below.

Offshore oil has turned St. John’s into a boomtown.

With one industrial park nearing capacity on the

edge of town, a second is under construction. Locals call it “Dannyland,� after its developer, former premier Danny Williams.

St. John’s Airport is buzzing with flights back and forth to Edmonton and Fort McMurray, and crew helicopters shuttling back and forth from offshore oil rigs. Tourism is picking up, with a new cross-Canada ad campaign and WestJet starting service to Dublin and London.

A foreign supplier won a contract for tankers to bring oil ashore. With no media-connected environmental groups to steer the subject to far-fetched disaster scenarios, debate in the Newfoundland and Labrador legislature turned to concerns about maintaining local employment.

Outside the city, parallels with B.C. become evident.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper signed on to a farcical “carbon free in 85 years� pledge at the G7 meeting in Germany. But hey, it’s an election year, not a time for serious discussion of issues.

Imperial Oil’s Kearl oilsands mine at Fort McMurray has started production from its $9 billion second phase, with the help of many Newfoundlanders.

Production continues to grow, heavy oil prices have surged with paving season, and large-scale liquefied natural gas export plans begin to take shape in B.C. With the legislature about to be recalled to endorse the Petronas-led LNG export project, Premier Christy Clark has assembled a climate action team with representatives from

industry, First Nations, local governments and a couple of professional protesters for good measure.

They have an absurdly short deadline to recommend changes to B.C.’s token carbon tax, as gasoline consumption returns to pre-tax levels despite continued high pump prices.

In St. John’s, another long, cold winter has finally loosened its grip after piling snow to doorknob levels. Every street in sight is being patched and repainted.

Electoral system is running on fumes

Editor: Re: “Editorial: Election promise to change voting system is empty,” June 19.

The electoral system in Canada, just as here in the United States, is running on fumes.

Structured for the politics of the 18th century, it assumes that our choices will be limited to two and that where we live is more important to us than what we think.

Suggesting that calls to modernize our electoral rules are empty flies in the face of that simple fact. To be sure, we can continue to keep our heads nestled safely in the sand—or we can look up and see that electoral reform embracing modern realities is inevitable and increasingly imperative.

One factual point. You suggest that B.C. voters “rejected” proportional representation.

That’s an odd definition, considering that in the 2005 referendum, 57.7 per cent of voters backed the single transferable vote, including majorities in 77 of 79 ridings.

The referendum only “lost” because of the sneaky decision to require a majority to be 60 per cent. Ironically, your parties typically earn governing majorities with less than 40 per cent of the vote, yet required reform to need 60 per cent.

Residents deserve public forum on mega-houses Editor: No Richmond resident could fail to observe the rampant demolition of older Richmond homes (464 in 2014; on track for over 500 in 2015) and their subsequent replacement by much larger houses that dwarf their neighbours.

Many new houses are egregiously oversized, questionably legal and are clearly negatively impacting the privacy and natural light of adjacent homes. Changing streetscapes are irrevocably altering the character and livability of Richmond neighbourhoods.

This is not about new house styles or who is buying them. It is about houses that are too tall, too wide and too deep for their lot size.

Richmond council is considering changes to the zoning bylaw. Purportedly, these changes will reduce the massive height and imposing front, back and side wall faces of new houses. I hope that the mayor and councillors are up to the task of analyzing

critically the proposals presented to them.

City planners have consulted extensively with the builders’ lobby. Concessions to builders are eroding reasonable, common sense solutions, such as regulating just how far back a house can extend into its backyard, how close to the neighbours it can be, fixing a maximum height and reducing the area on second floors.

I urge council to listen to the voices of Richmond residents and homeowners in a public forum. As tempting as all that additional revenue generated for the city from permit fees and taxes on high value properties might be, and despite generous campaign contributions to politicians from the developer community, current homeowners deserve to be heard above the clamouring and complaints of builders crying foul. Strengthen the bylaw to reduce massive houses, do not water down common sense proposals, and above all, enforce the regulations.

Cycling danger on Dyke Road

Editor: I’m writing to address the swarm of cyclists who frequent Richmond’s South Dyke—especially on Sundays.

For years, I have frequently, and leisurely, cycled Dyke Road. It is a road popular with walkers, rollerbladers and cyclists, young, old, fast, slow. All kinds.

On Sunday at about 10:30 a.m. I was cycling in the area of London Farm with a friend, and having checked my rearview mirror and noted that no one was coming from behind, I slowed to ride beside my friend briefly to share an idea with her.

No sooner had I spoken with her than cyclists coming toward us yelled, “Watch out behind you!”

In my mirror I caught a glimpse of this swarm about to pass us. I just made it back in front of my friend when the first cyclists passed me at top speed. I was caught, and held on tight as the cyclists whizzed past

me, sometimes three abreast, leaving me only about a half foot to maneuver in. I knew that if I wobbled I was doomed.

I understand the attraction of cycling in a swarm and the attraction of the Dyke Road but the road belongs to all of us and is not for your exclusive use.

To ride in a swarm, you need to have police block off the road to drivers and everyone else, so you have the road to yourselves and everyone is aware of what is happening. As it is, riding in a swarm is dangerous to you and to the rest of us who want to use the road.

You don’t own the road. You need to have respect for other road users. Riding three abreast is not safe and it wouldn’t look good on the reputation of cyclists to cause an accident. I hope bikers and bike clubs will take notice of this.

Richmond City Hall hosted a Philippine flag-raising ceremony on Saturday.

Philippine flag-raising ceremony at Richmond City Hall a significant event

Editor: I had the opportunity to witness and participate in the recently conducted first-ever Philippine flag-raising ceremony held in the quadrangle of Richmond City Hall on Saturday. The event commemorated the Philippines’ 117th Independence Day. It was a touching and emotional experience to see my native land national flag being unfurled and raised in this city I have lived and loved since I arrived in this country 18 years ago.

Richmond City Hall will surely become a memorable place and a historic ground for being the place to hoist our national colour.

The affair was attended by high-ranking officers from the Philippine Consul General Office, representatives from several Filipino-Canadian community organizations and hundreds of participants of Philippine ethnic background from various Lower Mainland cities and municipalities. The presence of several officials from federal, provincial and municipal levels of government lends an aura of significance to the historic event.

Richmond MP Alice Wong, Richmond East MLA Linda Reid and Mayor Malcolm Brodie, together with some members of Richmond city council, were seen huddling and chatting around with excited members of the Filipino Canadian community.

The increasing number of immigrants from the Philippines has made the Filipino-Canadian ethnic group the third largest visible minorities in Richmond and elsewhere in the Lower Mainland. Filipino-Canadians’ contributions in various fields such as health care, caregivers programs, community volunteering and the promotion of multiculturalism in various communities is significant and noticeable.

Thank you Richmond city council for giving the approval to hoist our colour and more power to the officers of Multicultural Helping House Society for organizing this successful event.

Make Onni build a marina Editor: The stalemate between Onni and Richmond City Hall must be ended and sanity must be restored to what should be a showcase in waterfront developments.

One way to salvage the current mess would be for the city to require Onni to build a permanent public marina along that portion of waterfront containing the current development and extending it to include the pond at the eastern end. This could accommodate 80 to 100 pleasure boats of varying sizes. Onni could be held responsible for all costs for such a marina. In addition Onni could provide free parking for all long term occupants.

The harbour authority could have the final say in the design and usage. All revenue from leased moorage could go into a marina maintenance fund to be managed by a special committee that includes representatives from the harbour authority, city hall and the

Steveston business community.

The two antagonists in the saga, Onni and city hall, must stand down and let common sense prevail. They are the causes of today’s controversy which is insulting to the business community and the residents of Steveston.

Proper planning and development cannot be carried out with Onni’s white elephant development hanging overhead.

A marina more than fits the original concept tied to the original maritime theme and would justify a partial rezoning. The boating public using such a marina would have a need for shopping facilities close at hand. A restaurant and other services would be in demand.

There is no question that rezoning is required if this development is to succeed. Doing nothing is not the solution.

Highway to Heaven Association celebrates Canada Day, now B.C. Day Editor: Richmond is a great model of multiculturalism. Our No. 5 Road is home to more than 20 prominent places of worship. Some of the world’s major religions—Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism and Sikhism— are well represented on this Highway To Heaven.

The presence of some very impressive places, including a mosque, a gurdwara (Sikh Temple), various Christian churches, a monastery and a pagoda, are just some of the places of worship that stand out and call No. 5 Road their home. Furthermore, there are a number of religious schools that complement these places of worship. It is a

true reflection of the Canadian Mosaic.

This Highway to Heaven is a great attribute to Richmond’s respect for diverse cultures and faiths. To their credit, City of Richmond, Richmond School District and various other agencies are doing an excellent job in promoting mutual understanding and intercultural harmony. In a sense, it is a total community effort to create such an environment.

More than three years ago, representatives of a number of places of worship along this stretch of No. 5 Road came together to form the Highway To Heaven Association.

Last year, for the first time, the association was pleased and proud to participate in the

Steveston Salmon Festival parade.

The association’s float was very well received by the community. This year again, the association will be joining the parade with its float decorated with banners of all of the participating places of worship.

Also, for the first time this year, the association will be celebrating B.C. Day on Monday, Aug. 3. The venue will be the Lingyen Mountain Temple, 10060 No. 5 Rd. Mayor Malcolm Brodie, MP Alice Wong and Richmond East MLA Linda Reid have accepted our invitation to join us. A number of other dignitaries are also expected to attend.

The program will commence at 11 a.m. and conclude around 2 p.m. The VIPs will be

bringing greetings around noon. There will be information booths by the participating places of worship. Furthermore, there will be ongoing multicultural entertainment throughout.

Lingyen Mountain Temple will provide a complimentary vegetarian lunch from noon to 1 p.m. to attendees. Admission is free and there is ample free parking. On behalf of the Highway To Heaven Association I would like to invite your readers and the community to join us in celebrating the B.C. Day in Richmond on Monday, Aug. 3.

A sight for sore eyes

Why must some flaggers be so rude?

Editor: At first I thought it was just the TV. I immediately turned it off and listened again. What was that sound? Where was it coming from? I had not heard that sound in years. I knew that sound from a long time ago and I had almost forgot that sound but it all came back to me when I heard it again.

I peeked out from behind the drapes to see where it was coming from. It was right across the street. New people had just bought the house. What was going on over there?

Editor: I have been a resident of Richmond since 1963.

I have seen many great changes, but with it has been some disturbing incidents in the process of these changes and improvements.

I particularly want to mention the roadworks that are taking place throughout the city, and the attitude of the young women who are paid to control traffic with their STOP and SLOW signs.

I recently encountered one at Cook Road as I was leaving the bank and was confused as to which way I could go. She simply shouted, “Where the hell are you going?” And then. “Go, right now! Go. Go!” She had not an iota of respect for the drivers who were as confused as I was, particularly the seniors.

Today there was roadwork at the end of No. 3

Then I saw them. They were outside the house—a group of them and they had something they were trying to take from each other. They were pushing each other and elbowing each other. It looked dangerous but I couldn’t stopped staring.

I quickly got my husband and had him take a look as well to confirm my disbelief in what was happening right across our street. He too couldn’t believe it.

We think they were teenagers laughing and playing basketball.

She screamed at me to “stop.” Then, as she chewed her gum, looked at her colleague and raised her eyes as if to say I was another stupid senior Richmond driver. She then proceeded to push the “WAIT” sign into my windshield and cursed under her breath.

I realize that this work has to be done and done safely, but why must we pay taxes for this kind of humiliation in public? Is it so difficult to find workers who respect the drivers and understand that many are confused with which direction to go and need assistance?

Why must they be so rude to us and treat us like children?

Richmond cranberry grower partners on $7.5m fund

Richmond’s Peter Dhillon, Canada’s largest grower of cranberries, is partnering with the University of B.C. to establish the Peter P. Dhillon Centre for Business Ethics at the Sauder School of Business.

Sauder and Dhillon, a 30-year Richmond resident, have together committed $7.5 million in funding toward the partnership, which will support the study, teaching and promotion of values-driven business practices locally, nationally and around the world.

“I’m partnering with Sauder to help ensure we are doing all we can to equip future leaders with the ethical perspectives they need to navigate the increasingly complex world of business,” said Dhillon, 49, chairman of Ocean Spray Cranberries Inc., the world’s leading producer of cranberry foods and beverages.

“There is an impression that you can’t do well in business unless you set ethics aside. I want to break that image. You can be caring, you can be thoughtful, and still be successful.”

Once it’s open, the Peter P. Dhillon Centre

for Business Ethics will be the first centre at a Canadian business school to take a comprehensive approach to the study, teaching and promotion of business ethics.

Its research will investigate and influence best practices across business disciplines, from marketing and human resources to finance and accounting.

It will also contribute to academic programming across the school, from undergraduate and graduate curriculum to executive education.

The centre will occupy a prominent space in the Sauder School of Business building on UBC’s Vancouver campus.

A resource for the Sauder community, it will provide a physical home for ethicsfocused activities at the school and a venue for interaction with the business community.

“Our partnership with Peter will greatly enrich our learning and research environment and allow Sauder to become an innovator in, and a model for, values-based business education and outreach,” said Sauder dean Robert Helsley.

Steveston celebrates Canada Day with one big party Biggest annual attraction in city returns to Steveston Village

Given the long stretch of hot, dry weather, it’s no surprise meteorologists are already calling for warm weather and sunny skies for Canada’s biggest little birthday party.

With an early forecast calling for a comfortable 24 C, the annual Steveston Salmon Festival—celebrating 70 years—should be glowing under the sun for Canada Day, July 1.

From sunrise to sunset, the streets of Steveston will be alive with the colours of our nation’s flag as revellers celebrate Canada’s 148th birthday. Each year the event draws an average of 70,000 people.

Steveston Salmon Festival’s two big draws are the parade and the salmon barbecue, but there’s also musical entertainment, a Japanese cultural show, martial arts demonstrations, food fair, children’s festival, youth rock fest and a car show.

The day starts at 6:30 a.m. with a pancake breakfast at the Steveston Community Centre. The children’s bike parade takes off at 9:30 a.m., followed by the big Canada Day parade at 10 a.m. Revellers can expect to see marching bands, colourful community floats, decorated vehicles and plenty of pirates parade down Moncton Street.

A citizenship ceremony for 40 new Canadians is also included in the day’s festivities. That begins at 8:30 a.m. on the main stage in Steveston Community Park.

Immediately after the parade ends, the singing of O Canada will mark the official start of the festival.

The Vancouver-based Odds band will headline the main stage entertainment. The afternoon

lineup also features Jodo Shin Taiko, Stone Poets, RichCity Idol 2015 Hannah Goertz, Steveston Drum Circle and Urban Myth.

For a community event to last a decade is an achievement. The Steveston Salmon Festival, however, has beat the odds by reaching a 70-year milestone thanks to the legions of volunteers that contribute time and energy to the community event each year.

And its popularity seems to only be increasing.

Longtime Steveston volunteer Jim Kojima says the parade and children’s activities are draws for the kids—and this year’s parade has over 100 entries. It begins at Garry Point Park and winds through the streets of Steveston, past the Steveston Community Centre, to Railway Avenue. It’s expected to take nearly two hours to complete.

Other festival-goers let their nose guide them to the open fire pits, where 1,200 pounds of wild salmon fillets are grilled and served up for lunch— from 11 a.m. until it’s sold out—at $15 per plate.

“The salmon bake really draws a lot of people,” said Kojima. “We’ve had it since Day 1. B.C. Packers used to give us the salmon in the early days.”

There is, of course, other food. The chow mein is also popular, and proceeds are funnelled back into the Steveston Community Centre.

Adding to the festival is the city’s Ships to Shore event, which will feature over 20 historic and working vessels on display at Imperial Landing and Britannia Shipyards.

Parking in Steveston is limited and visitors should expect some road closures due to the parade. Arriving by bus, bicycle or foot is recommended. Shuttle service will be available from the City of Richmond Works Yard, 5599 Lynas Lane.

The Children’s Bike Parade of the Steveston Salmon Festival is a chance for kids to show their Canadian pride. Those interested in entering should bring their decorated bikes, trikes and wagons to the Gulf of Georgia Cannery parking lot before 9:30 a.m.

The Steveston Salmon Festival celebrates its 70th anniversary this year, and if there’s been one constant over the decades, it’s change.

The earliest days of the festival, conceived during the Second World War, focused on Sports Day and getting local families together to celebrate the country’s birthday while competing and being active.

The addition of a Salmon Queen component within a few years helped the event grow in popularity from just a few hundred visitors to thousands. The event served as a fundraising vehicle for the fishing village’s development and continued to grow as a result.

“During the months following the Salmon Queen success, the society’s momentum increased,” wrote Victoria Kendall in The Spirit of Steveston: A History of the Steveston Community Society. “The Review observed that ‘a very active organization with a very ambitious group of foresighted citizens’ was animating all areas of community concern in Steveston. Of the $3,500 raised at the carnival, $300 was put in trust for a community centre.”

The Steveston Salmon Festival wasn’t always the name of the July 1 event.

It was initially called a Sports Day before being dubbed the Salmon Queen Carnival, then the Richmond Salmon Queen Carnival and then finally the Steveston Salmon Festival, Kendall wrote.

The parade’s route has also changed many times over the years.

In the early days, when a big chunk of No. 3 Road was a two-lane ditch, the parade began at the corner of No. 3 Road and

Westminster Highway, and travelled down No. 3 Road until Blundell, where the parade’s participants dispersed before gathering together again at No. 1 Road and Steveston Highway, according to Kendall. In later years, the parade started at Lansdowne Racetrack, and during the 1960s, it even started at Minoru Park.

It wasn’t until 1983 that the parade became a Steveston-only feature.

This helped prevent parade participants from getting lost—in between the two sections of the disjointed parade—a common feature in previous decades.

A major feature of the parade in the 1940s was the selection of the Salmon Queen. In 1947, the parade would continue onto the Steveston Park grounds for judging, at which point the selection and crowning of the Salmon Queen served as the highlight of the day.

To qualify for being eligible for the Salmon Queen contest, young ladies would compete to sell the most carnival tickets to determine the princess of each group: Cannery, Steveston Merchants, Brighouse, Dairy, East Richmond and Bridgeport.

The Salmon Queen tradition continued until 1978, when Anna Rolston, one of the founders of the carnival, passed away. It was that year that the Steveston Salmon Festival name was first used. The last Salmon Queen was named in 1986.

“The celebration had certainly changed from the days when Anna Rolston conceived it to be a sports day highlighting the crowning of a Salmon Queen. By the late 1970s, it was more of a festival than a carnival and although the Salmon Queen was still a central part of the festival, the association of Steveston with the salmon fishing industry was perhaps stronger,” Kendall wrote.

Salmon Fest began as a sports day Event was a welcome distraction to Second World War

The Steveston Salmon Festival is a community celebration of Canada’s birthday, with a myriad activities highlighted by a procession of floats at the parade that draws some 70,000 people annually to the fishing village.

What participants may not realize is that the volleyball tournament—and in years past, the fastball tournament—weren’t just tacked on events meant to take up space, but rather a shout out to the event’s origins.

Some 70 years ago, the Steveston Salmon Festival went by a different name, one more closely associated with an elementary school tradition that continues today: Sports Day. It was a sombre time back in 1944, with the Second World War raging on and local families separated, and the local Japanese community reeling from the aftermath of the Japanese assault on Pearl Harbour in 1941 and

the decision by the federal and provincial government to intern those of Japanese heritage into the B.C. interior, wrote Victoria Kendall in The Spirit of Steveston: A History of the Steveston Community Society.

“For all, it was a time of sacrifice. Families were separated, some permanently. The municipality ceased funding projects not essential to the war effort. Leisure time was directed not towards recreation, but to home war aid. School children gave up their May Day celebrations and sewing pools took over church socials,” Kendall wrote.

“In times when the upheaval of war made life difficult enough, picnics and parades were sunny prospects.”

It was in this context, Kendall wrote, that the Steveston Community Society was formed, and when its directors decided to hold a Sports Day to celebrate landscaping work at Steveston Park and a fundraiser for more park development, it was well received.

Participation was strongly encouraged on the Sports

Days, which had some impressive prizes.

According to an ad in the Marpole-Richmond Review, the winner of the girls threelegged race won $1, while the boys and the girls 100-yard dash each won $2, with second prize $1.25 and third prize 75 cents.

A headline the Review read: “Steveston Sports Day Best in Living Memory of Present Residents.”

In 1945, the Sports Day grew, with more than 700 visitors, and a doubling of the profits.

One longtime society member, Anna Rolston, then suggested the possibility of hosting a Queen contest at the 1946 Sports Day. The winner of the pageant would be called the Salmon Queen.

“The prospect of the Salmon Queen contest gave the July 1st Sports Day more publicity than ever before,” Kendall wrote.

The 1946 Dominion Day celebration would come to mean more than just a celebration of Canada’s birthday, as it was the first national holiday since

the end of the Second World War. “The Society’s Salmon Queen floats invited everyone back to Steveston for the Salmon Queen Carnival...The Marpole Richmond Review reported that ‘Residents gasped, for they had not expected such pretentious floats or such beautiful princesses’,” she wrote.

Nearly three times as many people showed up in 1946 compared to a year earlier “proving that the celebration which had begun as a sports day had blossomed into a carnival.”

Vancouver band Odds headlines main stage

A Vancouver band who made their biggest hits in the ‘90s will headline the Steveston Salmon Festival Main Stage on July 1.

Odds, who recorded recognizable songs like “It Falls Apart,” “Eat My Brain,” “Heterosexual Man” and “Someone Who’s Cool,” will perform at 1 p.m.

Formed nearly 30 years ago, the band started playing up to four nights a week as a ‘60s/’70s cover band called Dawn Patrol while performing as Odds on weekends.

Their first record, Neopolitan, came in 1991. Three more albums followed— Bedbugs, Good Weird Feeling and Nest—before the band took a nine-year hiatus.

Their albums achieved success in Canada, with several Juno nods and top-10 hits, along with a few top-40 hits in the United States.

The band—Craig Northey, Doug Elliott, Pat Steward and new guitarist Murray Atkinson—returned in 2008 with a new album Cheerleader. The album’s single, “My Happy Place” became the end-of-show song for the Canadian TV sitcom Corner Gas. “We got back together

because we had something to say musically. That’s why this play came about. We can look back and put it all together now,” says Northey, Odds’ longtime singer and guitarist. “We see that every weird decision we made,

In recent years Odds have made several shorter-length records and continues to perform regularly at festivals and events across Canada.

Northey says the band has the most fun playing its new music, but they still get a “small charge out of the strange spell the catalogue songs can cast.”

Car show part of the fun

he hot rods are revving up their engines for a return to Steveston.

Just a couple of weeks after the 25th anniversary of the Richmond Lions Club’s Sockeye Run show and shine, club volunteers Randy Scherk and Doug Harder are leading the team in organizing the second annual Steveston Salmon Festival Car Show on July 1.

“The Sockeye Run was a great success, with well over 300 cars,” said Scherk. “And with terrific entertainment, trophies, prizes and weather. We have had many com-

ments on what fun people had and how well it was organized.”

Buoyed by that show’s success, Scherk is hoping the Canada Day show which also include custom and classic cars will be no less popular to help complement the salmon festival’s 70th anniversary.

“Last year we were able to display 50 cars, and this year we have space for close to 100,” said Scherk, noting entry to the big parade will be limited.

There is no entry fee, but pre-registration is necessary as well as a commitment to arrive before 8 a.m. and stay until 5 p.m.

The show will be held on the grass ball diamond area of Steveston Community Park.

ne of the highlights of the Steveston Salmon Festival is, of course, the salmon.

Every year as salmon is placed on the grill and its delicious aroma fills the air, crowds gather and a long lineup forms for the Salmon Bake Barbecue.

It’s hard to resist the freshly barbecued, wild salmon served each year at the festival.

It always sells out.

There is no marinade or spice; all of the flavour comes from the fish itself and the alder wood the fillets are expertly cooked over.

Canada Day’s famous Salmon Bake couldn’t be done without the volunteers from Sutton Group - Seafair Realty who barbecue more than 1,200 pounds of salmon each year.

Barbecuing starts at 11 a.m. until the fish runs out later in the afternoon.

70th Annual Steveston Salmon Festival

New exhibit in Net Shed has young and old in mind Each year, festival organizers try to bring something new

Steveston Salmon Festival visitors will get a chance to travel back in time to reminisce about the event’s formative years in a new exhibit to be unveiled on July 1 in the Net Shed behind the Steveston Community Centre.

The 70th Archive Exhibit will feature an interactive component where children and families can help build a parade float, and a photo, movie and artifact gallery featuring, among other things, archival images and footage of the Salmon Festival over the past seven decades.

Volunteer Eric Chow, who sits on the Steveston Community Society’s board of directors, has partnered with City of Richmond archivist Bill Purver in putting together the exhibit, which has been in the works for more than seven months, and received a lot of help also from Friends of the Richmond Archives.

The exhibit will also include pageant crowns, robes and other Salmon Queen

paraphernalia, as well as photos of the carnival and the Salmon Queen pageants.

“These are really good relics people haven’t seen before,” Chow said.

Each year, the Salmon Festival organizers try to bring something new to the event, he said, and this new exhibit is something organizers felt visitors would enjoy.

This year’s retrospective exhibit will also feature volunteers who will help children decorate the float and explain the significance of the floats. There will also be volunteers stationed by the photos, to provide some context for visitors.

“We thought this project would be meaningful for those who have lived in Steveston a long time, but also for those who have left the city and only come back for the festival,” Chow said. “Exploring the history of Steveston in this project was very meaningful to me.”

The exhibit is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Canada Day. After July 1, some of the exhibit items will move to the community centre for further viewing.

T

he Steveston Salmon Festival Parade attracts visitors from around the Lower Mainland and beyond.

The parade marches off at 10 a.m. sharp from Garry Point Park and winds through the streets of Steveston past the Steveston Community Centre to Railway Avenue.

With over 100 entries on an annual basis, the Parade takes nearly two hours to complete.

All along the parade route, spectators are thrilled by the exciting variety of entries—including military colour guards, beautifully decorated floats, marching bands, vintage vehicles, celebrities, sports teams, politicians and other dignitaries, community and cultural groups. The parade promises thrills from start to finish.

New Salmon Fest float to make Canada Day debut It will be featured at other Lower Mainland parades too

For young children, there’s something magical about seeing a colourful parade float, seemingly hovering down the road without any visible means to propel it.

This year, a new float will be making its debut at the 70th annual Steveston Salmon Festival, and if Gordon Kelleway and Doug Miller from Gary Turner Displays have done their jobs, it will put smiles on thousands of faces all along the parade route on July 1.

The new Steveston Salmon Festival Float will be 23 feet long, 13 feet tall, and a little over 13 feet wide, and decorated in blues, reds, metallics and glitter.

“We turn into big kids when we’re doing it,” Kelleway said of the process that begins with a brainstorming session and early design drawings that can take weeks or months to finalize.

The trick is to go down to your knees and be a five-year-old kid, he said, and ask the question: “How are you going to put a smile on their face?”

While he didn’t want to spoil the July 1 surprise, Kelleway said: “You’ll know at first glance that it represents Steveston.”

The actual construction of the float has taken about 10 weeks, he said.

“I call them a rolling business card, a rolling pamphlet,” said Kelleway, who has

owned Gary Turner Display for 13 years along, the past several years with Miller.

Floats can cost as little as $3,000 for a float that can be towed, and up to $70,000 for a self-propelled version.

The Salmon Festival’s float will showcase Steveston and the City of Richmond at other parades throughout the Lower Mainland.

Aside from being a great marketing tool, the new float will also draw other floats from other parades to Richmond.

“It’s a reciprocal thing. That’s why Port Coquitlam is doing it. You make our parade bigger, we’ll make your parade bigger,” Kelleway said.

While the technology has changed a little bit over the years, the idea remains the same.

Floats are rolling works of art, with a lot of design and artistic ability put into them.

Today’s floats sport LED lighting and employ different materials and tools that enable more elaborate and customizable designs.

But some of the basics remain, including the fringe skirting around the edges of the float, to make it look like it floats, he said.

“It’s the 101 of float building so you don’t see the wheels,” Kelleway explained.

The new Salmon Fest float has a fully-electric vehicle at its core with a range of about 50 kilometres.

Before the big parade, it’s all about the kids

T

he Children’s Bike Parade is an exciting opportunity for children to show their Canadian pride and cycle the big parade route to the cheers and encouragement of the waiting crowds before the floats take off.

Children interested in entering the bike parade should bring their decorated bikes, trikes and wagons to the Gulf of Georgia Cannery parking lot at the corner of Chatham and 4th Avenue beginning at 8:30 a.m.

They will cycle off at 9:30 a.m. sharp.

No pre-registration necessary, participants are welcome to just come and expect to have a lot of fun.

All children must be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian. Helmets are mandatory for all riders and skaters.

Pre-parade fun includes a special participation ribbon and treats for the kids as they wait for the parade marshals to send them off. The bike parade travels down 3rd Avenue then East on Moncton Street to the Community Police Station.

With Richmond continuing its cultural transformation, Sakamoto said he believes newcomers need to respect the work that other immigrant families have done in the community to make it what it is today, and to volunteer their time to both maintain and grow the community into the future.

“Hopefully they will work hard to maintain it.”

Sakamoto, who began to fish commercially with his father at the age of 12 and had his own boat at 15, serves as the president of the Steveston Buddhist Temple, and said the spirit of volunteerism was instilled in him by his parents.

As a Buddhist, he believes in the interconnectedness of the community, and doesn’t believe people can achieve much on their own, but rather require the assistance of oth-

ers in the community to succeed.

Sakamoto credits his mother because she encouraged her children to get an education.

“Her feeling was that it was through education that you learn a lot, what is important, your whole scope of how you look at things changes because of education,” he said.

His commercial fishing earnings enabled him to pursue a university education.

Sakamoto, who is in his early 70s, holds a bachelor’s of science degree and studied architecture, which he said goes far beyond just putting up buildings.

He said the design of a building plays a large role in how those people inside it interact.

“You don’t actually achieve anything by yourself, you achieve many things by the help of other people.”

Volleyball tourney a hidden gem of festival

I

n its 70-year history, the Steveston Salmon Festival has always had a prominent sports component.

The earliest days of the annual July 1 festival was largely a community get-together, where the children would participate in games such as foot races.

Today, volleyball is the focal sport.

With the majority of fairgoers focused on activities such as the always-colourful parade and midway, the reverse co-ed fours tournament serves as one of the hidden gems.

Set to tip off at 8:30 a.m., and serve up continuous action until 6 p.m., the reverse tournament rules make for a particularly

unpredictable game. Notable is that male players must hit behind the three-metre line and cannot block shots by females.

As well, two male and two female players are required to be on the court at all times.

“Each team plays five round-robin games in their designated pool, usually completed before lunch, and there are always some surprises,” says organizer Dustin Schmaltz, who previously helped coach the R.A. McMath Wildcats to three provincial championship tournaments. “All it takes is a really good team not having a good morning to upset the order of things.”

Held since 2003, the tournament takes place on the grass ball diamond adjacent to the Steveston Community Centre.

Schmaltz expects as many as 70 teams (up from 65 last year) to enter, with players from beginner to university-level participating.

Volunteers return to help each year Over 400 volunteers assist with festival Every year the Steveston Salmon Festival draws hundreds of volunteers—a key reason why the festival is entering its 70th year.

“We have over 400 volunteers now to run the Salmon Festival,” said Jim Kojima, a member of the Steveston Community Society board, who added without them the festival wouldn’t be possible.

Volunteers assist on a planning committee, which starts work on the festival nearly a year in advance.

More come on board in the days leading up to the big event, and still more arrive on Canada Day to make the day a success.

Said Kojima: “We keep finding volunteers to keep it going.”

Last year’s Ships to Shore Steveston drew a fleet of classic ships to the riverfront.

Oriole comes on board for Ships to Shore Steveston Built in 1880, the Navy ship’s homeport is now Esquimalt

The Canadian Navy ship HMCS Oriole will join over 20 vessels for Ships to Shore Steveston, an event that coincides with Steveston Salmon Festival celebrations.

Set for June 29 to July 1, the free event will showcase historic and working vessels along the Steveston waterfront at Imperial Landing and Britannia Shipyards.

The majestic HMCS Oriole tall ship measures 31 metres (102 feet) long and is the oldest commissioned ship in the Canadian Navy. Built in 1880, the ship’s homeport is now Esquimalt.

Making a return appearance is the centuryold 41-metre (133-foot) schooner Adven-

turess, always a popular festival attraction.

Other classic sailing ships visiting Steveston’s shores include the 1977 schooner Spike Africa, the Canadian Coast Guard’s Siyay hovercraft, naval patrol craft vessels and the historic Steveston boat Silver Ann. Ships to Shore Steveston will be open noon to 7 p.m. daily, with ships docked and ready for exploration and free boarding. Take in a dragon boating demonstration, Chalk the Boardwalk art competition, food trucks, wooden boat shows and more.

At 10:15 p.m. on Canada Day, a fireworks show will take place over Imperial Landing’s waterfront.

community Richmond library offers computer classes in Mandarin for seniors

Richmond Public Library is offering a free series of computer classes for Mandarin-speaking seniors.

Sessions take place Tuesdays and Thursdays—July 7, 9, 14, 16, 21 and 23—from 10 a.m. to noon in the computer zone at the Brighouse branch, 7700 Minoru Gate.

“This course will cover the basics of computer hardware, what to look for when buying a computer, Internet safety and how to use the mouse and keyboard, Microsoft Windows, browsers, search engines, e-mail, WiFi, Android tablets and smartphones.

Participants should bring their laptops, Android tablets and smartphones to class,” said Wendy Jang, co-ordinator of Chinese community services.

Jim Ng is volunteering to teach this course. Ng is a full-time instructor of computer courses at Douglas College. For more information call 604-231-6413.

Planner to be honoured in Richmond for lifetime of work Michael Geller, whose contributions as an architect, city planner and property developer have helped transform Metro Vancouver communities, will be honoured in Richmond for a lifetime of work.

As the real estate and planning consultant for B.C. Packers, Geller oversaw the initial planning and rezoning of Imperial Landing.

Geller will be feted at a gala event called Building Minds, Sept. 1, at Richmond Country Club. The event is sponsored by the international educational organization ORT. “I was literally shocked when I was approached, but very much honoured,” said Geller in a news release. “My first thought was of all the other people who are probably more deserving. But, that being said, I agreed to do it because I am familiar with the good work ORT does, particularly in the field of education.”

A non-profit, non-political organization, ORT’s objective is to meet the educational and vocational requirements of diverse MICHAEL GELLER students throughout the world. ORT Vancouver is currently piloting a Smart Classrooms project in Vancouver and Richmond schools.

In four decades working in urban design and real estate, Geller played key roles in other projects around Metro Vancouver, including UniverCity at Simon Fraser University, the south shore of False Creek, Bayshore in Coal Harbour, Deering Island and Furry Creek.

Geller is on the adjunct faculty of Simon Fraser University’s Centre for Sustainable Community Development, and also serves on University of B.C.’s graduate Urban Design Program advisory board.

Seniors expo set for Saturday at South Arm church

CARP’s Richmond chapter is hosting a seniors health and resources expo this Saturday at South Arm United Church.

The free event will feature 75 vendors, seminars, food and live entertainment. Prizes are also on offer, including a three-day Holland America cruise, departing and arriving in Vancouver, to be awarded by draw.

Exhibitors range from the financial sector to health care to senior residences. Seminars will be held throughout the day on topics ranging from alternative health treatment to fitness to fraud protection.

Entertainment includes the New Horizons Jazz Group, the Richmond Delta Youth Orchestra, the Ukrainian Choir and Darleen Ketchum. There will also be “cultural barbecue” and a playground on site.

Former B.C. Lions greats from Richmond, Angus Reid and Bobby Singh, will also be in attendance.

CARP (formerly known as the Canadian Association of Retired Persons) started a Richmond chapter early last year. Its June 27 event is from 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. at South Arm United Church, 11051 No. 3 Rd.

As people become aware of the potential benefits of cannabis, the old stigma associated with it is slowly disappearing and giving way to acceptance by people from all walks of life.

As I grew up in a conservative family with a strong Christian background I never imagined that I would be using cannabis to relieve my chronic sleeping disorder.

Like the masses, I believed it to be at the same level as crack cocaine, crystal meth, all other recreational narcotics, and so on.

I had a negative take on cannabis growing up as a direct result of the kind of education I received, a gateway drug that will spiral your life out of control and leave you homeless and destitute.

I believed the propaganda against cannabis wholeheartedly during most of my adult life and it was easy to stigmatize users, especially when you are bombarded by negative press on all fronts: media, educational system, family, and even peers.

he past is still unmistakably present at venerable Steveston Park.

Though the Richmond senior men’s and Nisei fastball leagues have long faded from existence, the memories of games from yesteryear continue to echo throughout the ball yard. The tales tend to grow taller as time wears on, but that only serves to add to their legend.

Veteran Stealers’ pitcher Darren Strang performed more than admirably early on, keeping his team on even terms (scoreless) against Japan through two innings.

But predictably as he began to tire, Japan began to finds its way offensively. They took a 2-0 lead into the third inning and seemed poised to add to it when Stealers’ centre-fielder Ryan Shields made the kind of jaw-dropping catch that few players even dare to attempt. Stretching out as far as possible with his glove, the lefty dove through the air to make the third out and deny Japan what would surely have been another three runs.

Japan did manage to stretch its lead in the fourth inning with a pair of roundtrippers, before the Stealers’ Luke Powers led off the bottom of the fifth with a home run over the right field fence but that was all the offence the hosts could muster.

“I thought we played really well, especially for a club team, but Japan is a fast team and they were able to take advantage of every little thing,” said Stealers’ manager Marshall Shields, whose passion for fastpitch seems to know no boundaries.

It was his desire to keep finding ways to promote his sport that led to the exhibition games.

Seeing the old diamond so filled with energy again, Shields was not alone in comparing the evening’s entertainment to the old days.

“That’s the way it was in the old days, the way Steveston used to be,” he said.

Guided by the coach Dawn Stadel, members of the Richmond Mariners boys’ fastball program were busy selling an assortment of condiments through the stands.

Upstairs in Keeley’s Quarters—honouring the longtime voice of Steveston Park— but rarely used these days, announcers introduced each batter as they came to the plate. And if you let your mind wander, you could almost hear George Keeley greeting fans.

“Welcome to beautiful Steveston Park,” he might have said.

Or when a foul ball made its way over the backfield fence: “Heads up.”

Or, after the final out: “Folks, that’s the ball game.”

I have a huge passion for the sport,� says the affable 26-year-old North Shore resident, whose past few seasons have unfortunately been riddled by injuries.

Now, knock on wood, he’s healthy and more determined than ever to climb back up the ladder of success.

In March he was a finalist in men’s singles at a futures event in Gatineau, Que., after winning another futures tournament in Italy a month earlier.

He’s hoping to build on that success with a strong showing at this week’s Richmond Futures where he’s the No. 1-ranked player. “I’m ready for a good summer stretch,� says Bester, who next month will be one of six athletes representing Cana-

da in tennis at the 2015 Pan-American Games in Toronto.

A reflection of his growing maturity, Bester is quick to recognize how easy it is to get caught up in what if’s. Rather than dwelling on the past, he is instead looking ahead—confident his abilities will serve him well. “I think it’s instinctive as a human when a prize is on the line how great it would be to win that, but really there are so many steps you need to take before,�he says. “Some things you can get in the way, such as injuries, but what is in your control are the things you do in order to give you the best chance. I’ve learned from my career to take every match as it comes. Every match is different and you need to prepare that way.�

A strong showing on the Futures Tour this summer will boost Bester’s world ranking, and put him back in contention for a shot at such titles as Wimbeldon or the French Open, where a decade ago at the junior version he became the first Canadian to make the finals of a Grand Slam and finished as the No. 8 player in the world. Following his junior career, he reached a careerhigh 229th on the Association of Tennis Professions rankings in 2011. During the period he was also a Canadian Davis Cup team player. Then came the injuries, including hip surgery in late 2013. “Injuries are part of sport, and in my case combined with some bad luck.

The injuries took longer to heal than normal and that slowed my momentum,� Bester says. “My dad and I were laughing about it the other day and he was apologizing for giving me bad genetics.�

his mom a basketball player and dad a sprint kayaker who earned a master’s degree in physical education. Both also played tennis recreationally and introduced their son to the sport at the tender age of five. “I remember finally hitting a couple of balls with my dad. It was so natural for me,� he says.

Showing a special aptitude for the game led him in Grade 9 to move to Florida to train at the Bolletteiri tennis academy which produced the likes of Andre Agassi and Maria Sharapova.

His talent soon earned him Canadian junior championships at the under-14,

under-16 and under-18 age groups. “But I never felt any pressure to succeed,�Bester says.“My motivation came from within, though I was always comforted and surrounded by a really good support system in my parents. I can still go to them today and get really good advice. I sometimes ask my mom about her basketball games or certain mental situations she experienced as a player.

And my dad was my coach until I was 14 and somone I currently look to for mental guidance. I’m really lucky to have two parents that know what it takes.�

During his reign as the national junior

men’s champion, Bester, who grew up aspiring to be a firefighter, developed a feared serve that continues to be dominant. He also boasts an aggressive game which he modelled after Pete Samprass, widely regarded as one of the greatest players in tennis history. He believes those two aspects of his game are still among his greatest strengths, along with a fierce competiveness. “I remember when I was younger I would lose at Monopoly or some stupid card game with my parents and wouldn’t talk to them for hours,� he says.“I hate to lose. That’s just who I am.�

It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of John “Sonny” Danes on June 19, 2015 at Richmond Hospital. John enjoyed a nice morning at home, enjoying some of the smaller pleasures in life, and passed unexpectedly on his own terms. John was a very outgoing, social man, and loved to be surrounded by family and friends. He worked many years as night supervisor at Pacific Meats. John especially enjoyed meeting his Wednesday ‘Coffee Pals’ from the packing house, and his computer ‘Luncheon Group.’ He was a computer instructor at Minoru Senior’s Centre and made many lifelong friendships there. John was a tremendous Canadian football fan, and an original season ticket holder for his beloved BC Lions. He was a founding member of the Richmond Minor Football Association and loved his role.

Also, John was a true jazz aficionado and even published a book on the jazz heros. He had a big jazz influence on many friends and family. John was an assistant scout leader, and a cub leader for many years at the 2nd Richmond branch, and thoroughly enjoyed his time volunteering and mentoring the youth. Many will recognize his photo from when John had his column ‘The Gadabout’ in the Steveson Phoenix. John was predeceased by his sister, Patsy Leonard. He is lovingly survived by his wife of 65 years, Jacqueline “Jackie,” and always said Jackie was “the love of his life.” He also leaves behind his adoring family, son Bradley (Connie), and his pride and joy, granddaughter, Colleen and great granddaughter, Ariana; his sister, Ellen Miller, many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. John was a wonderful, dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather.

His passing will be felt by all who knew him. Special thanks to Gabriela and Anna, and Dr. Danny Wong. A Visitation will take place on Friday, June 26, 2015 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m at the Richmond Funeral Home, 8420 Cambie Road, Richmond, BC. He leaves behind many uncles, aunts, cousins, and friends.

“Linds” was raised in Steveston all his life. He was interested in all sports but especially sports fishing, golf, baseball and floor hockey. He and his numerous friends have known each other since childhood and remained close friends until his death. He had a long career working at Crown Packaging as a machine operator. His job allowed him to take long, adventurous sojourns across the world going to exotic and tropical places or just sport fishing in BC rivers.

His love of sports fishing began when he was working on his dad’s commercial fishing boats then later purchasing his own pleasure craft with his friends. His many times spent with his friends golfing, fishing, playing baseball, or bbqing with the occasional bottle of Caymus wine, Kokanee beer, or hard liquor was when he was his most happiest. He would do anything for family or friends. In 2013 he was diagnosed with colon cancer.

He did not complain about his bad break rather he accepted it with a fighting spirit, stubbornness, and dignity. His doctors said that they were surprised that “Linds” lasted this long. He left this place on his own terms. Lindsay indeed had a wonderful life full of laughter, joy, no regrets, and hundreds of friends and family by his side. He will still have your “back” from heaven.

The family would like to thank the numerous doctors, nurses and aides at the Richmond Hospital, Cancer Agency and Salvation Army Rotary Hospice. Also thanks to the hundreds of visitors who came by the hospital or his home to check up on him. This definitely extended his life. But, special thanks to Donald Tabata & family, Perry Law & family, Stu Ruttan, Ralph Talbot, Dawn McKinney, Lisa Mason, Laura McCormack, Sue McKoryk, Leanne & Shaun Bird, Ken & Metta Hamaguchi and the numerous friends who came by to bring food or take him to medical appointments or chemotherapy. Special thanks his youngest brother, Russell, for taking extra care of Lindsay to feel the most comfortable in his last years by being his caregiver.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, June 26, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at the Steveston Buddhist Temple, 4360 Garry Street, Richmond, BC with a reception to follow. Rev G. Ikuta officiating.
